This week... From the editor It’s election time… again. Personally, I enjoy watching elections unfold, but it’s fair if you’re feeling disengaged with politics right now after heading to the polls less than two months ago for the NSW state election. You have what’s known as voter fatigue. Admittedly, even I haven’t made up my mind entirely yet. I always find the ABC’s Vote Compass to be a useful tool to see where your values fit in comparison to the major parties’. I’ve also been following Triple J Hack’s Swinging Voters tour. As the radio program has a mostly young adult demographic, it’s been interesting to hear about the issues that will sway their vote. Climate change is a big one; in particular, the Adani coal mine in Queensland. It appears younger generations are more concerned about climate change than their predecessors, although that’s not always the case. The 2019 federal election has been dubbed the ‘climate change election’, so it will be interesting to see where the major parties’ policies will land them. It’s worth noting that undoubtedly the biggest party pushing for environmental change – The Greens – have fewer specific policies in areas such as jobs and mental health than Labor and the Coalition. May the most palatable political party win.

news Home of the flying boat It’s a labour of love and the pinnacle of the Rathmines Catalina Memorial Park Association’s work. Decommissioned PBY-45 Catalina Our Girl was exposed to the Puerto Rican elements for years until volunteers bought it via eBay and shipped it in pieces to Australia. The late-1943, ex-US Army amphibious aircraft’s fuselage is now being restored by a group of 15 dedicated volunteers before its tail and outer wings are reassembled. The association hopes it can be relocated as a permanent display to Rathmines Park – once the largest RAAF Flying Boat Base in the Southern Hemisphere – by 2021 to coincide with the Royal Australian Air Force’s 100th anniversary as an independent service. President Bill Anderson said the association had spent several hundred thousand dollars on

the Catalina’s restoration since it acquired it in 2013, with about $100,000 more to go. This did not include the estimated $500,000 to build a permanent hangar at the park in which to store the Catalina under lock and key. Mr Anderson added the association hoped to be closely involved in the heritage-listed park’s future, which Lake Macquarie council owned. “It’s the spiritual home of flying boats, and, to that end, there’s a considerable amount of history there that needs to be highlighted,” he told Newcastle Weekly. But, as all of this comes at a great cost, the association relies heavily on community donations, particularly through the annual Rathmines Catalina Festival. Usually held in October, last year’s event was cancelled due to

feedback about the weather, so, this year the event is back, bigger and better than ever, on Sunday 19 May. Kicking off at 8.30am, the festival will bring Rathmines Park alive with joy flights, military vehicle and vintage car displays, an aerobatic display and a rare flyover by HARS Aviation Museum’s two DC-3 aircraft.

It’s supported by major sponsors Centennial Coal, Lake Macquarie council and Kennards Hire. Tickets are $10 per adult or $25 for a family of four (parking free). Pre-purchase via stickytickets. com.au to skip the queue, or at the gate on the day. Visit rathminescatalina.com for more information. - Georgia Osland

news Degree meets cyber security demands From phones and transport to health and finances, cyber security plays an important role in everyday life. A new master’s degree at the University of Newcastle, due to start in July, will help to address a shortage in workers across the world, which is estimated to be more than two million people. Global innovation chair in cyber security and program developer, professor Vijay Varadharajan, says there is the potential for attacks to increase as society continues its digital transformation. “We’re moving towards smart city, smart services and digital infrastructure so, in that sense, cyber security comes in pretty much anything,” he says. “There is the potential for more attackers and their most common motive is money.” The industry is tipped to triple in size in Australia over the next decade, according to the Australian Cyber Security Growth Network. Professor Varadharajan adds more than 20,000 jobs will open across the country within

the next three years alone. He believes the master’s degree will teach students about cyber security concepts and techniques, show them how to design secure systems and applications, and reveal ways to counteract different types of attacks. “With a growing demand for cyber security professionals, it is critically important we have a skilled workforce to protect people, data, systems and infrastructures from cyber-attacks,” he says. Professor Varadharajan says one of the main concerns in cyber security relates to small-andmedium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which account for more than 90% of businesses across the country. “Australia is not unique in this – SMEs are major drivers of economic growth,” he says. “Large corporations have enough resources to have security professionals, but you need [other] security people, not only for them. “SMEs are the supply chain and [attackers] can go through their supply systems into higher companies.” The Master of Cyber Security will start in

Some of the graffiti scrawled on the grandstand.

Club attacked by vandals In the midst of the club’s revitalisation, South Cardiff Football Club volunteers were horrified to discover its home base, Ulinga Oval, had been vandalised. No surface was left untouched by graffiti, with the perpetrators tagging everything from the canteen to the grandstand. Vice-president and local business

owner, Max McCorkell, described it as the “worst vandalism ever experienced at the club”. Club officials notified Lake Macquarie council of the incident, however, they were reportedly told the council would not assist in the clean-up as the vandals did not use any profanities. So, in the early hours of the

Sunday morning after the attack, club volunteers rolled up their sleeves to remove the graffiti before games kicked off for the day. “For half an hour of stupidity, it took hours to clean up,” Mr McCorkell said. “This is a cost born by the whole community; removal then repainting will be an extensive cost, because of a bunch of thoughtless people… who do not respect the hard work involved in managing the sports facility.” The attack came as the club planned its repair of one of the fields and the construction of a retaining wall with a $35,000 state government grant, among other renewal projects. Club officials reported the incident to police and provided them with photos. Mr McCorkell added local residents saw and heard nothing, making it even harder to catch the culprits. - Georgia Osland

Apprentices recognised Two Hunter-based electrical apprentices have been recognised at HVTC’s annual Excellence Awards. Daniel Beavan, an electrical fitter at Origin Energy’s Eraring Power Station, was named Apprentice of the Year. He came out on top from a list of finalists across Hunter Valley Training Company’s nine regional branches in NSW. Phoebe Giadresco, a firstyear electrical apprentice hosted to Liebherr-Australia, won the inaugural Milton Morris Encouragement Award. This award was created in honour of HVTC’s founding chairman, Milton Morris AO, who passed away in February. “It is such an honour to be the first recipient [of this award],” Ms Giadresco said.

news Rate rise verdicts for Hunter councils The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has rejected Port Stephens Council’s proposal for a rate rise but approved applications in Muswellbrook and Dungog. The three Hunter councils had applied for a special variation to increase their general income above the 2.7% rate peg, which would come into effect on 1 July 2019. Port Stephens proposed to increase rates by 7.5% per annum over seven years for a total of 65.9%. It was met with a 10-month community campaign and a record 681 submissions by local residents. Muswellbrook requested a 15.13% single year increase, while Dungog sought a 97.8% increase over seven years. IPART reduced this to 76.0% over five years. The decisions mean that rates in

Port Stephens can increase only by the 2.7% rate peg, in line with other councils across NSW that did not apply for a special variation. Muswellbrook ratepayers face a $21 increase in 2019/20 if the council proceeds to implement the approved change. Dungog council can increase the average residential rate by $135 per annum, with similar increases in rates over the following four years. IPART chair, Dr Paul Paterson, said special variations gave councils flexibility to generate additional income above the rate peg to meet specific needs. However, he added IPART had to consider whether there was a genuine financial need for additional revenue for a council to be financially sustainable and to fund future infrastructure projects or asset renewal requirements in

their region. “In the case of Port Stephens, we found that the impact on ratepayers is not reasonable due to the absence of a strong financial need and demonstrated willingness to pay for the proposed works,” Dr Paterson said. “It is clear that Dungog council has a clear and urgent need for increased funds. “However, given the magnitude of the proposed increase and uncertainties around budgeting, IPART considered it was prudent to approve the special variation for a period of five years, not seven as requested.” The three Hunter councils were among 13 across the state to apply for special variations for 2019/20. Eight of these were approved in full, three were partially approved, and two – Port Stephens and Tamworth – were declined.

Cash flagged Lake Macquarie council has allocated $25 million over the next four years to a proposed commercial development in Toronto. The funding was flagged in the council’s draft operational plan for 2019-20, which is on public exhibition until Wednesday 29 May. Toronto Foreshore Protection Group spokesperson, Suzanne Pritchard, said the group was “gobsmacked” money had been allocated to the Bath Street site without a development application or community consultation. A council spokesperson told Newcastle Weekly last month it had appointed SHAC Architects to undertake community engagement and develop the design of the mixeduse development. The council expected to lodge a DA to the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel later this year or early next.

Colourful army takes great strides for multiple sclerosis A red-and-white-clad army has descended on Lake Macquarie this month to help fight an “invisible” illness. Seventeen of Whitebridge woman Stacey Hartcher’s biggest supporters have registered to clock

‘The May 50K’ – a major fundraiser by MS Research Australia. Each participant has pledged to run, walk, swim or ride a cumulative 50 kilometres each this month in an effort to help bankroll research into multiple sclerosis, a

progressive, debilitating condition in which damaged nerve sheaths disrupt impulses between the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, causing symptoms such as loss of coordination, tremors, fatigue and speech difficulties. With two young children, aged five and seven, Ms Hartcher must fight fatigue and pins and needles just to make it through each day. “The biggest thing about being diagnosed with a progressive disease is knowing that it’s going to get worse,” Ms Hartcher told Newcastle Weekly. “But while I’m able to get out and do things and contribute to finding better treatment and a cure, I will.” Ms Hartcher’s nearest and dearest are right there beside her. “People must look at Stacey and think: she’s fit, she’s healthy, she runs, plays netball – they don’t see her at her most vulnerable,” Cath Hetherington said. “It’s an invisible illness.”

Collectively, the group has already raised more than $4,800 for the cause. It all culminates in a community FUMS Run this Saturday 18 May. The 10-kilometre social run (or walk, for those who would like to bring their children or partners) starts and ends at Central Charlestown Leagues Club, a major sponsor of the event. The scenic route will stop at the Royal Crown Hotel in Dudley and Whitebridge icon Pegs Café, among other locations, to draw raffles and collect donations. “It doesn’t have to be a substantial [donation] – even the little bits plug away at finding a cure,” Cath added. For those who can’t make it but would still like to donate, go to themay50k.org/fundraisers/FUMS Each incremental donation of $10 earns you an entry into a major prize draw. - Georgia Osland

news Heroes gone but not forgotten A service at Wallsend’s World War I Memorial on Friday 24 May will commemorate 100 years since its unveiling as a tribute to local soldiers. Huge casualties from Gallipoli and the Western Front had such an impact on the community in 1918 that Wallsend parents, grieving the loss of their sons, did not want to wait until after the war to see a monument erected to acknowledge their sacrifice and service. A community committee was formed, chaired by the mayor of Wallsend Town Council, to raise funds by donation and public subscription. Individuals and organisations like the Red Cross Society were involved. When a foundation stone was laid by David Watkins MHR Newcastle on 14 December 1918, most of the money was already raised. The location was chosen at the tram terminus, between the rotunda and post office. The memorial, unveiled by John Estell MLA Wallsend on 24 May 1919, was engraved with the names of 332 Wallsend men who enlisted, of whom 68 were killed; two had been awarded the Victoria Cross, one received the Distinguished

Conduct Medal, four the Military Cross, and nine the Military Medal. At the unveiling ceremony, the mayor, Ald T Abel, suggested that a plaque should be added to the memorial with the names of the nurses who had gone from the town. This was a whole-of-community memorial. During the war, friends of two Wallsend men killed in Gallipoli and France, William King and Leslie Oliver, organised funds and erected marble memorial tablets on the tram terminus rotunda. Those two memorials are still there today. Other plaques were later added to honour those killed during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, as well as to commemorate the Anzac Centenary in 2015 when the memorial was restored using grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The memorial was relocated in 1971 to its present location in Wal Herd Park on Cowper Street to allow for the widening of Tyrrell Street. The people of Wallsend, who paid to erect the soldiers’ memorial, were concerned that future generations should not forget the sacrifice of the World War I volunteers and should take care of

those returned soldiers who were wounded or needed help to return to civilian life. The centenary ceremony, which starts at 10.30am, shows the commitment from our generation to that cause. For more information, contact Wallsend Heritage Group patron John Mills, 0418 687 869.

Agonising wait for heart At six years old, Noah Dobson should be thinking about what mischief he and his mates are going to get up to, not where his new heart is going to come from. Yet he, together with his parents Erin and Chad and siblings Will and Lacey, faces an agonising wait on the heart transplant list. The Belmont North family could have as little as 6 hours’ notice to fly to Melbourne, should a donor heart become available. How long that will take is anyone’s guess. Noah’s parents first learned of his congenital heart defect – hypoplastic left heart syndrome – at Erin’s 20-week pregnancy scan. Doctors presented two options: a medical termination, or a series of surgeries once Noah was born, culminating in a Fontan procedure, an open-heart surgery where blood flow is redirected from the lower body to the lungs. “Straight up, a termination was out of the question,” Erin told Newcastle Weekly. “As soon as [doctors] said there were things we could do; that there was a chance he could survive – we had to do everything we could.” Noah underwent his first scheduled surgery at Westmead Children’s Hospital when he was only four days’ old. He pulled through, only to contract a blood infection at 10 days’ old, since he was also born without a spleen. Doctors

resuscitated him in the ICU. What was supposed to be a four-to-five-week stay in hospital dragged out to three months. At three months old, Noah wasn’t well enough to undergo his second planned surgery, so it was put off until he was 9 months, when he outgrew the first shunt and couldn’t wait any longer. He surprised everyone and was back home at Belmont North within a week. A leak in one of his heart valves landed Noah back in hospital at Westmead in March 2018, when he had a mechanical valve inserted. The plan was still to carry out the Fontan procedure, but in November, Noah fell ill with fatigue and vomiting. Further tests showed a clot had formed over the mechanical valve – something that was supposed to be a permanent fix. In December, he had a pacemaker fitted. Not two months later, Noah wound up in hospital again after his right lung partially collapsed. He was given an IV drug to help his heart pump blood, however, the Fontan procedure was no longer an option. Without a heart transplant, Noah will not survive. His family has turned to the public for help to cover costs. You can donate at gofundme.com/ noah-needs-a-heart-transplant - Georgia Osland

gallery to house the growing collection. The current site, in Laman Street, was opened in 1977 by Queen Elizabeth II. Newcastle Art Gallery Society president, Prue Viggers OAM, said it had played an integral part in the city’s cultural life over the past 50 years. “Membership of the art gallery society provides access to the city’s renowned collection of art and vibrant exhibition program,” she said. “The society hosts events to raise funds to assist the art gallery to acquire works of art for the collection.” Inaugural members who formed the society and current members have been invited to ARTSPEAK 2019. Minor facelifts Five Lake Macquarie swim centres will undergo a mini makeover this winter. A variety of improvement works are under way at Charlestown, Morisset, Speers Point, Swansea and West Wallsend. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said that, with more than 306,101 visitations since June, the swim centres were a valuable asset for Lake Macquarie council. “Our swim centres are a place for people to be social, connect with one another and to improve their health and fitness,” Cr Fraser said. “We are carrying out these improvement works in response to feedback we’ve received from our customers in recent years asking for more shade, seating, barbecues and open grassed areas.” The works are expected to be complete by spring.

Wheels in motion as team aims high for kids in need Hunter duo Bruce Deer and Warren Kildey are ready to hit the road for their 20th Variety NSW Bash this weekend. Over the years, the team has raised more than $160,000 for kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. Bruce, a former primary school teacher from Cooranbong, says the Variety NSW Bash is all about giving back. “I have worked with children all of my life and understand the importance of access to books, technology devices and play equipment,” he says. “To see the smiles on the faces of rural children when they have received gifts for over two decades has been priceless and brought much joy to Warren and myself. “The camaraderie, friendships

and bonds formed with other competitors has also added greatly to the experience.” Bruce and Warren, who have targeted a further $10,000 in 2019, praised their sponsors’ ongoing support. “With the help of our sponsors, we can continue to bring smiles to many more faces,” Bruce adds. “It is a humbling experience to be involved with an event that has done so much for disadvantaged kids in rural communities.” The Variety NSW Bash, which starts on Sunday 19 May, will cover 2,200 kilometres and is due to pass through many remote communities, including Bomaderry, Moruya and West Wyalong. Variety – the Children’s Charity head of regional development, Jason Bourke, says the organisation

Lachlan Fitzgibbon celebrates scoring a try during the Knights’ win over Canterbury at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday. Photo: Getty Images

Knights close in on top half Newcastle has moved just outside the NRL’s top eight after a third straight win at the weekend. The Knights sit in ninth position on eight points ahead of Sunday’s clash with St George Illawarra. A victory over the Dragons would see Newcastle enter the top

half of the table after 10 rounds – almost inconceivable when the Knights slumped to five consecutive defeats between rounds two and six. Saturday’s 22-10 win against Canterbury at Suncorp Stadium followed back-to-back triumphs

over Parramatta and the New Zealand Warriors. Newcastle raced out to a handy 16-0 lead at half-time in the round nine clash as Hymel Hunt, Mitchell Pearce and Lachlan Fitzgibbon all scored. But the Bulldogs found their bite in the second half and reduced the deficit to 16-10 with 23 minutes left on the clock. Canterbury then looked certain to score when Jack Cogger found Nick Meaney with a high-ball, but Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga pulled off a try-saving tackle. Ponga and Pearce linked to shut down another attacking raid with 11 minutes left, before Ponga finally sealed the deal for the Knights. The 21-year-old produced a brilliant right-foot step in the dying stages to evade Kieran Foran and sprinted 30 metres to score. Newcastle will play the Dragons in Mudgee from 2pm on Sunday 19 May.

Gabaj’s rare feat for Northstars It was a weekend to savour for Newcastle Northstars import Dominik Gabaj. The Slovakian defenceman bagged a double hattrick – a rare feat in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) – during Newcastle’s 10-3 win over Adelaide in South Australia on Saturday. Not content, Gabaj backed up that effort with another three goals on Sunday as the Northstars romped to a dominant 8-2 victory to continue the team’s unbeaten start to the 2019 AIHL season. The two wins were the biggest seen across the league so far. Newcastle will return to Hunter Ice Skating Stadium to face Melbourne Ice at 5pm this Saturday 18 May, before taking on Melbourne Mustangs at 4pm the following day.

Bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden.

Morning ritual

Crisp mornings call for bellies full of warm food to start the day. After all, breakfast is the most important meal – why not savour it?! THESE ARE EDITED EXTRACTS FROM CSIRO PROTEIN PLUS BY PROFESSOR GRANT BRINKWORTH, DR JANE BOWEN AND GENEVIEVE JAMES-MARTIN; RRP $34.99, MACMILLAN AUSTRALIA.

Frenched crumpets with ricotta cream Serves: 4 Prep: 15 mins, plus standing time Cook: 5 mins 8 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla 4x 60g wholemeal crumpets 2 Tbsp light margarine 300g fresh reduced-fat ricotta 300g low-fat vanilla dairy dessert (e.g. Fruche fromage frais) 2 tsp caster sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon

28

Place the eggs and vanilla in a flat dish and whisk together with a fork. Add the crumpets to the egg mixture and turn to coat well on both sides. Stand, turning occasionally, for 15 minutes or until the crumpets have absorbed the egg mixture. Melt the margarine in a large non-stick frying pan over low–medium heat. Add the crumpets and cook for 2–3 minutes each side or until cooked and golden. Meanwhile, using a whisk or a hand-held electric mixer, beat the ricotta and dairy dessert together until smooth and light. Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Top the hot crumpets with the ricotta cream and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Serve warm. NOTES You’ll need 2x 150g tubs of vanilla dairy dessert for this recipe. Store the leftover ricotta cream in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool on the tray, then break into small pieces. Place in a bowl with the Sultana Bran and toss to combine. Meanwhile, place the oats and 1L of the milk in a large saucepan over low–medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly, then reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until the oats are soft and the mixture has thickened. Shortly before the oats are ready, combine the coffee, cocoa powder, extra honey and remaining milk in a separate saucepan over low–medium heat. Whisk constantly until the coffee and cocoa have dissolved and the mixture is smooth, then continue to whisk until the mixture comes to a simmer. Remove the pan from the heat and cover to keep warm. Divide the oats among serving bowls and sprinkle with the nut mixture. Pour the warm mocha into mugs and serve alongside.

Five decades on from Abbey Road Mark Wilson (Jet), Davey Lane (You Am I) and Darren Middleton (Powderfinger) as the supergroup, collectively known as ARC, prepares to perform a show in Newcastle this August to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Abbey Road – The Beatles’ final recorded album. Released on 26 September 1969 by Apple Records, it was an immediate commercial success, reaching number one in both the United Kingdom and United States. Abbey Road spent 81 weeks on the UK albums chart, 12 weeks at number one on the Billboard chart, and was certified 12-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2001, selling in excess of 31 million copies.

The album’s iconic cover, which features the four band members walking across a zebra crossing outside Abbey Road Studios, has become one of the most famous and imitated images in the history of popular music. Kram says the album’s longevity is simply down to it being “so f*****g good”. “The production element, the way the record is produced, people are

Newcastle’s very own unique theatre festival will again stage four, bite-sized plays at three café venues, with 12 plays to catch in total. This year’s venues include two newcomers – Birdy’s Café in Tighes Hill and The Bolton Street Pantry in the CBD. Popular venue The Press Book House has returned to play host for another year. Each venue dishes up its own vibe; Birdy’s oozes bohemia, The Bolton Street Pantry is city chic, and, when you step into The Press Book House, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d just been transported to a New York City underground scene.

“We’re very excited about this year’s festival; in a way, it’s a return to the festival’s origins, providing three different experiences across three venues,” festival director Kate Dun said. “We received 43 [play] entries this year – one from as far away as New Zealand – and the calibre of script writing was high, making the final decision on the winning plays really tough.” The Micro Theatre Festival is now in its fifth year, and, in keeping with the festival directors’ beliefs, they have announced a new bravery award will be up for grabs. This is in addition to the usual accolades for best direction, scriptwriting and acting. The Micro Theatre Festival will be held from Thursday 23 May to Saturday 1 June. Visit microtheatre.com.au for more.

Dish debacle puts team on brink It’s been dubbed “chickengate”. During last night’s episode of MasterChef Australia, Warners Bay contestant Steph De Sousa was appointed captain for the second team challenge of Season 11. The two teams had to take inspiration from an historical recipe for a state reception. For Steph’s team – burgundy – it was a 1950s state reception for the Queen. They served up whiting in a butter grapefruit sauce with a herb salad for an entrée, before the main dish of chicken maryland, pea puree, chicken jus and tarragon oil. This was where they ran into trouble. “We may have served some raw chicken, which was very embarrassing, but we recovered,

put the oven on a very high temperature, and finished it off,” Steph tells Newcastle Weekly. “With the chicken, I remember thinking that it didn’t look as brown as it should. “Under that pressure, you just have to trust your team, and it came back to bite us.” Despite a well-received dessert dish, made up of almond, coffee and cherry bombe alaska, Steph’s team went into tonight’s elimination round (Thursday 16 May). The mother-of-four, who hails from Tasmania originally, says she has always been passionate about food. However, it was when her young family moved to Vanuatu that Steph developed a true love for scratch cooking. The term refers to making food

MasterChef Australia contestant Steph De Sousa.

using basic ingredients, rather than buying meals already prepared. “I’ve since been using scratch cooking throughout my whole life – it’s really cost-effective, especially when you have four kids,” she says. When she’s not cooking, Steph practices daily yoga and lives by the mantra: find what you love and do it eight hours a day. MasterChef Australia airs on Channel 10 from 7.30pm, Sunday to Thursday. - Ben Murphy

for women to chill out with other likeminded women. “When you’re at home, there’s always something to do; there’s always housework. It’s nice to escape that.” The first retreat, held in the Hunter Valley last weekend, was deemed a success, with eight women attending. “It’s a bit exciting; there’s been a lot of interest [in the retreats],” Joy added. “The demand is there. So, I thought, I need to do this regularly.” Joy expects to hold the retreats every few months. PICK OF THE WEEK Interstellar Saturday, 7TWO, 9pm, PG (2014) Matthew McConaughey (pictured) is Cooper, a former pilot and engineer forced to live off the dusty and barren land after the Earth’s environment has been decimated. But when he meets scientists Professor Brand (Michael Caine) and his daughter Amelia (Anne Hathaway), they hatch a plan to find new inhabitable worlds. But this is not your average sci-fi apocalyptic flick. In Christopher Nolan’s hands, it is an exploration of the clash between reason and emotion, and deeply flawed humans.

Friday

Guardians Of The Galaxy

Clueless Sunday, SBS VLND, 8.35pm, M (1995) This teen classic of the ‘90s, based on Jane Austen’s Emma, is a sharp and very funny satire. As prissy 16-yearold Cher, the delectable Alicia Silverstone (pictured) takes a grand tour of self-discovery beneath the shallow surface of Beverly Hills superficiality and finds there’s more to life than facials, BMWs and silicone. Cher provides us with the perfect antidote to the world of celebrity-obsessed vacuousness, lightheartedly analysing the falsehood that surrounds her with wit and charm.

Sunday, 7MATE, 7.30pm, PG (2014) Featuring a colourful cast of characters played by a talented ensemble, this superhero flick based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name is an otherworldly success. The plot centres around Peter Quill (Chris Pratt, pictured), who becomes the uncomfortable ally to a bunch of extraterrestrial oddballs after he steals a coveted orb from Ronan (Lee Pace). But when he finds out just how powerful the orb is and the threat it could pose if delivered to the wrong people,Quill realises the fate of the galaxy is in his hands.

Responsibility is the name of the game in the year ahead for Sam. He needs to slow down and enjoy his home life. He will be surrounded by love and support, friendliness and contentment. In everything he does, he needs to be thorough and conscientious. Sam must finish all he undertakes as there is no need to rush. Just ease things gradually into their proper place. Things are happening behind the scenes to help bring changes into his life and will reveal themselves at the end of 2019.

Get ready to laugh After months of anticipation, we’re on the brink of Newcastle’s first locally grown comedy festival. Newcastle Comedy Festival will be staged across several venues from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 May, underpinned by the main event – the Newcastle Comedy Festival Gala at Civic Theatre on Friday night. Headlined by Tommy Little (pictured), the gala stars Gen Fricker, Al Del Bene (USA), Luke Heggie, Neel Kolhatkar, Cam Knight and more – many of whom are also performing sideshows. Visit newycomedyfest.com for all the details, or to buy tickets.

Enter to WIN One lucky Newcastle Weekly reader will win a double pass to Cam Knight’s show, Get Rich or Die Crying, at the Clarendon Hotel on Saturday 25 May from 8pm. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with Newcastle Comedy Festival in the subject line. Tell us your name, full contact details and why you need a laugh. Entries close and winners drawn at 9am on Thursday 23 May. One entry per person. Permit No. LTPM-16-00488.

Dulux has performed rigorous testing on its Wash&Wear paint to optimise stain resistance, hiding power and toughness, and created a product that you can rely on every day – ensuring your walls stay looking freshly painted for longer.

Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has 2x $150 Dulux vouchers, redeemable for Wash&Wear products, to give away. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with Dulux in the subject line. MY KIDS My favourite thing by far is my kids. My boy Kawhi is three and my daughter Liela-May is two. I love spending time with them.

XXXX XXXXXX Xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx

My favourite things MY PARTNER Amber has been by my side through all my highs and lows playing rugby league and continues to support me all the way.

THE BEACHES I’m always on the lookout for a new beach or spot. I love spending time at the beach and love what a trip can do for your mental health.

MY TEAMMATES AND SQUAD

Edrick Lee

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS WINGER

Edrick Lee joined the Newcastle Knights on a three-year deal in 2019. At 26, Lee is an entertainment machine. With speed to burn and a leap that would rival any basketballer, the winger is a game-changer. Last week, the flyer played his 100th first-grade game after starting his NRL journey with Canberra in 2012. He spent five years with the Raiders before linking with Cronulla. The Indigenous representative played two seasons with the Sharks before making the move to the Hunter, which he now calls home. 62

My teammates have helped me so much in my journey here to Newcastle. I recently moved here and I’m loving it but a big part of settling in has been the friendship and support my teammates have given me and my family.

MY CULTURE Being from the Torres Strait Islands is something I am very proud of. I love that I get to express my culture through the NRL.
