This week... From the editor For a fleeting moment, the 2019 federal election was gripping. “LNP – 53, ALP – 53”, the ABC’s ‘seats won’ ticker read shortly after voting closed on Saturday. Then, the gap grew wider and wider, as it became clear the opinion polls had miscalculated a Labor win. The Coalition romped home with what’s predicted to be a majority government, reinstating Scott Morrison as Prime Minister. Many media outlets have posited the question: “What went wrong for Labor?” What we do know is this: Labor not only failed to pick up the key seats it had hoped to around the country, but also lost some of the seats it had previously held. The ALP suffered a sweeping swing against it, most notably in Queensland and Tasmania, but also right here in our own backyard. The Hunter Region has traditionally been considered a Labor safehold, and yet the party took a hit across the board (except for in Newcastle, where only nominal gains were made), with the Hunter electorate itself becoming a marginal seat for narrowly re-elected MP Joel Fitzgibbon, who lost votes to The Nationals and One Nation. What I know is this: I saw very few Labor ads in the lead-up to the election, but plenty of the LNP and United Australia Party’s scare campaigns. Pity it had the opposite effect on this voter.

news Salvos helps lift Bien out of debt Irresponsible lending has been a hot topic of late, and none more so than for one young man who turned to The Salvation Army for help. Twenty-year-old Congolese-born Bien Simba, whose family came to Newcastle as refugees, was roped into a seven-year loan for a $19,000 ute, over which the repayments would have amounted to $48,000. “It was probably the swiftest [car] transaction we’ve ever seen,” The Salvation Army’s Moneycare Financial Counselling regional manager, Kristen Hartnett, said. “He was told if he didn’t buy the car today, it would be gone tomorrow, as if there was only one car on the lot. “Then he moved straight from the salesman to the broker, who, when the big banks correctly rejected Bien’s credit application, then went to a second-tier lender. “It should have never been approved. They grossly misrepresented Bien’s assets, income and living expenses.” Things quickly turned sour for Bien, who couldn’t keep up with the repayments.
“I was going to work, still making money, but not having enough money for myself,” he said. What’s more is, three months later, the car broke down, costing a further $9,000 in repairs. “Here’s a young man who, like any typical 20-year-old – male or female – was drawn to the idea of having a new car,” Ms Hartnett added. “Unfortunately it was a case of irresponsible lending, and it can happen to anyone. Some of us have the cash reserves to ride that out; some of us have family and friends to call on, but many of us don’t. That’s where Moneycare comes in.” Moneycare, as Ms Hartnett told the audience at the 2019 Red Shield Appeal launch last Friday when she shared Bien’s story, is The Salvation Army’s financial literacy program, and it can be accessed by anyone, on any income level, who finds themselves in financial difficulty. It’s the program helping to support Bien while his case is with the Financial Ombudsman Service. When you give generously to the Red Shield Appeal doorknock this Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 May, you’re helping to bankroll programs like Moneycare as well as homelessness and natural

news Police disappointed in region’s results New changes to drink and drug driving laws came into effect this week, but police are concerned they may not make a difference after “disappointing” results from a blitz on poor driver behaviour in the state’s north. From Monday, motorists caught drink driving in NSW, at any level, can now have their licence suspended immediately. This includes a first-time, lower-range offence, which is set to prompt a three-month suspension coupled with a significant fine, currently $561. Drug driving will attract the same penalty for first-time offences if it is confirmed by a laboratory, while a second or subsequent offence will result in a court appearance, as well as licence disqualification and a fine. Northern Region Operations Manager, Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey, said drivers had to change their attitudes. Operation Chrome took place on Friday and Saturday across the Northern Region, which is based in Newcastle and extends from the Central Coast to the Queensland border.

The operation also included the state’s Southern and Western Regions as police targeted motorists who were speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, using a mobile phone behind the wheel and under fatigue on rural roads. Superintendent Humphrey said officers made about 150 arrests for drink driving, 100 of which were in the Northern Region alone. The operation saw 10,800 random breath tests and 500 drug tests conducted, just under 700 traffic infringements issued for various offences, and 16 driving under the influence of a drug offences. “It is clear people are just not getting the message about drink driving,” Superintendent Humphrey told Newcastle Weekly. “For there to be 100 PCAs [Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol] – the 0.05 limit has been in place for 38 years, it’s been around long enough. “I don’t know if people are complacent, but those figures are inexcusable for the Northern Region.

news A master stroke on Beaumont Street Hamilton’s famous eat street has a new lease of life thanks to a vibrant array of artwork that gives a nod to the suburb’s rich multiculturalism and history. Gallery owner Rebecca Murray added her artistic flair to telecom pillars and electricity boxes in Beaumont Street, with each masterpiece taking about three hours to complete. The works complement the iconic decorative lighting draped along the street, which was replaced last year. Hamilton Chamber of Commerce has also teamed up with Newcastle Men’s Shed to provide convenience seating from planter boxes, initially commissioned by local business owners after the 1989 earthquake. Chamber president Nathan Errington said it had used money made available by Newcastle council through the Business Improvement Association (BIA) funding model. “These have been important projects for the suburb and form part of the chamber’s larger commitment to enhancing the suburb’s appeal to visitors from near and far,” he said.
“While the chamber can provide a limited amount for this type of public beautification, we hope that this investment also encourages business operators and owners to think about how they can add value to the suburb by enhancing their own space.” Meanwhile, the Hamilton business community has learned how it can be a more accessible suburb for those with a disability. A member networking function included a panel discussion from Community Disability Alliance Hunter’s David Belcher, Vision Australia’s Jordan Ashby, and independent disability consultant Linda Hughes. Mr Belcher congratulated businesses in Hamilton for adding accessibility to the agenda. “Attitudinal barriers are far more existent within society and these need to be addressed sooner than physical barriers,” he said. “Updating city settings can be quite costly and there are many policies and procedures to take into consideration, which means change doesn’t happen quickly. “That’s why the community needs to do the

best they can with what is available to them.” One of the main concerns raised was an emerging trend where residents take their dogs with them while dining out or meeting for coffee. Mr Ashby said it was dangerous for people with low or no vision as they could easily trip on the dog’s lead and injure themselves.

news Exhibition remembers Greta Migrant Camp A network that “spreads out and connects people of different generations”. This is how Maitland Regional Museum vice president, Julie O’Donohue, describes the Greta Migrant Camp’s impact amid the commemoration of its 70th anniversary. In June 1949, a group of 600 refugees, many of them families displaced by World War II, arrived at a disused army camp in Greta. It was the beginning of their new life in Australia. The Greta camp played a central role in what is regarded as the country’s boldest post-war experiment – the introduction of millions of European migrants. It was a plan that changed the face of Australian society forever. An exhibition at Maitland Regional Museum, which will go
until 24 June, seeks to highlight the social, economic and cultural contribution these people, and many subsequent migrants, made to the area. Old Worlds: New Beginnings includes oral histories, microdocumentaries, and artefacts contributed by former Greta residents. “Most of them came with the philosophy that this was their new home and they were going to make the best life they could for them and their children,” Ms Donohue says. “They set up businesses in the area, contributed a lot to local manufacturing, and opened up a whole culinary world that Australians hadn’t been aware of.” The exhibition was born through the hard work of volunteers and supported by the donations of personal memorabilia, including

bags, dolls, and clothing. “They’ve kept these things because they are attached to them, they wanted to keep that memory alive of when they first came to Australia and moved into the Greta camp, which somebody said was like hell,” Ms O’Donohue says. “Some families just wanted to embrace the country, but it wasn’t all positive for them either. “When they were in the camp, there was a lot of opposition to different people from different cultures. “People didn’t understand what they were talking about, what their life had been like before they came here. “We didn’t have that pressure, that devastation, so how do we even acknowledge that really, other than having these sorts of events where people can see that it was a terrible

REMEDIATION WORKS ON TRACK The site is currently installing a remediation system to address legacy arsenic contamination located on the north western boundary. The first stage of the project has been completed and involved constructing a 12-metre deep underground wall around the contaminated area. The next step is to construct a cap over the area to minimise the ingress of rain water. The soil and groundwater contamination is the result of an old manufacturing process where an arsenic-containing solution was used in the ammonia plant. The practice ceased in 1994, before Orica took over ownership of the site in 2003. Studies have confirmed that there is a very low level of environmental and human health risk associated with the contamination. Works on the remediation system are expected to be completed by August 2019.

news Chamber backs review of workers compensation Former Newcastle council general manager Janet Dore will undertake an independent review of the state’s workers compensation system. Ms Dore, who served in the role from 1999 to 2007 before being appointed chief executive of the Transport Accident Commission in Victoria, has been tasked with assessing the performance of the Nominal Insurer – Insurance and Care NSW (icare). The NSW workers compensation system is the largest defined benefit scheme in Australia, protecting more than 4.5 million workers, with about 90,000 active claims from injured workers being managed each year. As the biggest insurer, icare issues 74% of total premiums while its agents, EML, Allianz and GIO,
manage 65% of total active claims. Given its dominance, the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) announced the Compliance and Performance Review of the Workers Compensation Nominal Insurer Scheme to assess and address issues. The Hunter Business Chamber welcomed the review last week. Chief executive Bob Hawes said it provided an important opportunity to look into some areas of concern for businesses and employees. “Businesses across NSW have complained of poor administration when it comes to [compensation], including a lack of appropriate checking of claims, lengthy delays, and poor advice and support for both employers and employees,” he said.
“Importantly, this review will look at the current operations and roles of icare, the Nominal Insurer, and its claims agents, and will shine a light on the experience of employers and employees with a view to identifying measures to implement improvements.” A draft report is expected to be provided next month and a final version, complete with any findings and recommendations, will be delivered by August. The review includes public submissions or written feedback,
which closes on 14 June. Mr Hawes urged all businesses who interacted with icare and the workers compensation scheme in NSW to participate. “We hope that this review will ultimately address the concerns of employers and employees in the administration of the system, resulting in more effective and efficient administration of workers compensation in NSW,” he said. A major refurbishment of Newcastle’s City Hall is more than half completed after the finishing touches were applied to the historic building’s southern facade. The milestone follows the restoration of the eastern exterior and clock tower. Workers have now turned their attention to its western and northern aspects, which will include sandstone repair and replacement, removal of corroded steel fixings, and refurbishment of the steelframed windows and repairs to stormwater damage. The work is scheduled to be completed by April 2020. “Not since the days of the 1929 Chrysler, which rolled off the production line the same year City Hall opened, has our architectural jewel looked so good,” Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes said. “This large-scale conservation work will ensure City Hall stands strong and proud in a pivotal precinct that will quickly grow in stature as a cultural and hospitality hub that will include Newcastle’s first five-star hotel in the Roundhouse building.”

Community’s donation to ovarian cancer research An aged care community in Waratah has raised $6,000 for ovarian cancer research. Each year, more than 1,600 Australian women are diagnosed with the disease. Acknowledging the need for more research, Maroba Caring Communities started a fundraising campaign. Out of uniform days and barbecues took place and raffle tickets were sold by staff and residents, which raised close to $3,000. This figure was then matched by Maroba Caring Communities. “Unfortunately, we recently had a staff member diagnosed with ovarian cancer and it really brought to our attention the need for more awareness and research
into the disease,” chief executive Viv Allanson said. “Our community is a generous one and everyone donated what they could to try and make a difference to saving women’s lives.” The money will be gifted to the Hunter Medical Research Institute, where it will go towards the lifesaving work of associate professor Dr Nikola Bowden. Dr Bowden said it would dramatically impact her research. “The funds will cover the cost of testing a new combination of chemotherapy drugs on ovarian cancer cells in the lab,” she said. “Our entire ovarian cancer program is funded by donations from the community. Without this support we can’t do the research, it’s that simple.”
Labor shaken, but not stirred Hunter Region Labor candidates held onto their posts at the 2019 federal election, despite a nationwide swing against the party. Going into the election, the region’s four electorates – Newcastle, Shortland, Hunter and Paterson – were all held by Labor with margins of 9% or more, and have been traditionally considered very safe seats for the party. The Hunter is now only a marginal seat, with sitting MP Joel Fitzgibbon’s lead narrowing from 12.5% at the 2016 election to just 3%. As at Tuesday when just over three-quarters of the vote had been counted, Fitzgibbon won 37.7% of first-preference votes, ahead of The Nationals’ Josh Angus on 23.9% and One Nation candidate Stuart Bonds on 21.8% – a resounding result for the alt-right party, which made national headlines. In Paterson, incumbent Meryl Swanson was re-elected with
55.6% of the primary vote (81.8% counted), but evidently lost a portion to Liberal party candidate Sachin Joshi in a 5.2% swing against Labor. It was the same in Shortland, where sitting Labor MP Pat Conroy bested the Liberals’ Nell McGill, despite a 5.8% swing against the ALP after 80% of the vote had been tallied. Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon made only nominal gains for Labor, with a 0.4 swing to the party, and a clear win with 64.2% of the primary vote (80.2% counted) against Liberal competitor Katrina Wark, who claimed 35.8%. Nationally, the Coalition was returned to power and Scott Morrison re-elected as Australia’s Prime Minister, while Opposition Leader Bill Shorten resigned. Though some seats were too close to call as Newcastle Weekly went to print, the LNP was poised to form a majority government. - Georgia Osland

news ‘Go-to’ volunteer rewarded for invaluable support
Autoimmune Resource and Research Centre (ARRC) volunteer Carolyn Comyns.
Carolyn Comyns has become known as the Autoimmune Resource and Research Centre’s ‘go-to lady’ after more than a decade of invaluable support. Her efforts will be recognised with the 2019 Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation’s Chairman’s Medal today (Thursday 23 May) as part of National Volunteer Week, which goes from 20 to 26 May. Carolyn says she’s honoured by the award but
is particularly grateful for the $3,000 grant to her organisation, ARRC. “I don’t like to draw attention to myself, as I find that awkward, but I’m also very pleased for the funds to be going to ARRC for the excellent work it does,” she says. “It will allow more people to be reached, to pass on more information, and guide others through their journey.” ARRC supports people with a range of autoimmune diseases, including Scleroderma, Sjogren’s Syndrome and Lupus – a condition that Carolyn suffers from personally, which can cause fatigue, joint pain, rash and fever. Despite living with Lupus since her diagnosis in 2008, Carolyn happily helped ARRC with everything from fundraising to administration, while she also offered support and guidance to newly diagnosed people with autoimmune diseases. “I just want to continue supporting ARRC so it can support other people and, in my own way, do whatever is possible to help the organisation to achieve this,” she says.
“There are so many people out there who don’t have my level of support, which is an ongoing thing, and so many people need help.” Meanwhile, Vim Hawtin and Amy Dodd have been announced as joint winners of the 2019 Greater Charitable Foundation Employee Volunteer of the Year Award. Over the past 12 months alone, Vim has volunteered at five OzHarvest NEST sessions in Newcastle while she’s also participated in the Cerebral Palsy Alliance mentoring program. Amy, who was runner-up for the award in 2016, spends her time working with nine different charities and community partners, including OzHarvest, Tantrum Youth Arts, and Camp Quality. Greater Charitable Foundation executive officer, Anne Long, says both employees are highly regarded amongst their colleagues. “Amy and Vim demonstrate an outstanding example that encapsulates the theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week, which is making a world of difference,” she says. - Ben Murphy

School’s new playground provides inclusion for all Students of all abilities can now play side-by-side after the official launch of an inclusive space at Waratah Public School. The Variety Inclusive Playspace, which cost more than $130,000 in total, includes a net disk swing, octagonal climbing frame, scooter track, sand pit, mud kitchen, tree house, and a creek bed and bridge. The playspace is located within the grounds of the support unit but is accessible for classes from the mainstream school. There are three support units at the school, which cater for children with cognitive delays, autism, global developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and addition syndromes. Assistant principal, Sonja Drewitt, thanked Variety – the Children’s Charity for its $100,000
grant towards the project, as well as other sponsors and the school community. “This is extremely important for the multiple disabilities that the children have,” she said. “It’s an area where they can come out, self-regulate, and get more prepared for learning.” Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT chief executive, David Sexton, said the charity had been a big supporter of inclusion since its formation in Australia in 1975. “A playground is a really wonderful way of demonstrating inclusion,” he said. “Kids of all abilities and ages, and even adults, should have the right to play. “Often playgrounds are restrictive in terms of what they

have in them and how you can even get there. “This is so important for a school like Waratah, and the Hunter Region, to allow kids of all abilities to play together. We’re very proud to be a part of the project.” The previous equipment at the school was deemed outdated and underutilised, with limited sensory output for students with autism. Variety raised funds for the
playground through last year’s Variety of Chefs gala dinner in Newcastle. The event promises an impressive culinary experience, exclusive entertainment, and an array of auction items. The 2019 edition is on Saturday 10 August from 6pm. Visit variety. org.au for more information or to book tickets. - Ben Murphy

sport Ponga, Pearce run riot Kalyn Ponga and Mitchell Pearce inspired Newcastle to its fourth straight win with a 45-12 thrashing of St George Illawarra in Mudgee on Sunday. The Knights led 6-0 after five minutes when a Pearce grubber sat up perfectly for Tim Glasby to score. Ponga then booted a penalty goal in front of the posts, before blitzing five Dragons in a 30-metre burst to make it 14-0. Another penalty goal and further tries to Ponga and Kurt Mann put the Knights in a dominant position at half-time. Newcastle was quick to build on its advantage after the break as a Pearce long ball found Shaun Kenny-
Dowall, who dived over in the corner to make it 32-0. Fellow winger Edrick Lee then raced 30 metres down the line and delivered a grubber kick back in-field for Pearce to score. The Dragons were handed a boost when Mann was sent to the sin bin midway through the second half. Tariq Sims and Zac Lomax both crossed to make it 38-12, but a Mitch Barnett offload for Connor Watson put the Knights out of sight. Pearce banged over a field goal from 35 metres out to complete the scoring. Newcastle takes on the Sydney Roosters at McDonald Jones Stadium this Friday 24 May from 7.55pm.
Mustangs snap winning streak A seven-game winning streak was snapped on Sunday, but the Newcastle Northstars still sit atop the Australian Ice Hockey League ladder. Melbourne Mustangs handed Newcastle its first loss of the 2019 campaign with a 3-2 victory at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. After a scoreless first period, Melbourne’s Vadim Virjassov struck twice in the second as the visitors went into the final stanza with a handy lead. Newcastle hit back through Ondrej Smach, only for the Mustangs’ Jamie Bourke to restore the two-goal buffer. Sammy Banga then added a late consolation goal for the Northstars. The narrow defeat came on the back of Newcastle’s gritty 4-1 win over Melbourne Ice on Saturday. The Northstars were forced to respond after a Jesse Schwartz goal

put the Ice ahead in the second period. Smach restored parity and, not content, fired two more shots at the Ice goal, which were both deflected in by Banga. The Canadian import then completed his hat-trick in the third period to seal the game. Newcastle travels to Melbourne this weekend to face the Mustangs on Saturday at 5pm, followed by the Ice on Sunday at 2pm.

Classic lasagne Peel and quarter the onions and blitz them in a food processor until finely chopped. Add the sundried tomato oil to the large pan on the heat and sauté the onions, stirring, for 5–6 minutes.
This is an edited extract from Bish Bash Bosh! by Henry Firth & Ian Theasby (HQ Non Fiction, RRP $39.99).
Serves: 6-8 2 onions 100g sundried tomatoes, plus 2 Tbsp oil from the jar 3 carrots 3 celery sticks 1 sprig fresh rosemary, plus more for garnish 2 sprigs fresh thyme 4 garlic cloves 700g chestnut mushrooms 300ml red wine 1 Tbsp tomato purée 1 Tbsp red miso paste 1 tsp balsamic vinegar ½ tsp dried oregano 2 tsp soy sauce 2x 400g tins chopped plum tomatoes 800ml water 500g dried lasagne sheets salt and black pepper salad leaves, to serve For the béchamel 125ml olive oil 125g flour 1.25L unsweetened plantbased milk 1½ Tbsp nutritional yeast
Meanwhile, peel the carrots and pulse them in the food processor with the celery until minced. Remove the leaves from the rosemary and thyme and finely chop. Peel and grate the garlic and add it to the pan; stir for 1 minute. Add the carrot, celery, rosemary and thyme, reduce the heat slightly and sauté, stirring occasionally, for 12–15 minutes. Meanwhile, thinly slice the sundried tomatoes. Pulse the mushrooms in the food processor until finely minced. Add to the pan along with the sundried tomatoes. Stir, increase the heat slightly and sauté, stirring for 8–10 minutes. Pour in the wine, increase the heat and stir constantly for 5–6 minutes, until nearly all the liquid has evaporated. Add the tomato purée, miso paste, balsamic vinegar, oregano and soy sauce and stir for 1 minute. Add the chopped tomatoes and water. Lower the heat to medium and simmer for 30minutes. Taste and season. While it is simmering, make the béchamel. Put the second pan over a medium heat and add the olive oil. Add the flour and stir for 3–5 minutes. Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly. Add the nutritional yeast and stir until smooth. Bring to the boil then lower the heat and simmer until the béchamel thickens to a custardlike consistency. Taste and season. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Layer up your lasagne. Spread a quarter of the ragu into the lasagne dish and spoon over a quarter of the béchamel. Cover with lasagne sheets, breaking them if necessary, to make a complete layer with no gaps. Repeat three times, reserving some béchamel to cover the top completely. Garnish with a few rosemary leaves. Cover with foil and put on the lowest shelf of the oven. Bake for 50 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for a further 15 minutes. Leave to stand for 10 minutes before serving with the salad leaves. The leftovers will taste amazing the next day – simply bring back to piping hot in the oven or microwave.

cover story Cooks Hill author Wendy James at Toronto Library ahead of the Write Here! festival. Photo: Peter Stoop
Do or try: hard work pays off Eight-time published author Wendy James didn’t know if she had what it took until she was forced, for want of a better word, to write. In her early career days, James wanted to do something “useful”, so she tried nursing. It wasn’t for her, so she enrolled in a creative writing course at Sydney university. Suddenly, she found herself in a sink-orswim scenario, having to write short stories for assignments. “It turned out I wasn’t half bad at it,” James told Newcastle Weekly.
Before long, her short stories were being published and she won the university’s creative writing competition two years in a row. In 2005, James published her first novel, Out of the Silence, while on the long road to finishing her PhD. It won the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Crime Novel. Fast-forward 14 years, and the revered crime and literary fiction author from Cooks Hill released her eighth novel on Monday, titled The Accusation. Her most recent title before that, The Golden Child – set in Newcastle, is being
considered for a FOX series. While James’ journey seems linear, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Self-belief has played a pivotal role in her success – a concept she will discuss at the inaugural Write Here! writers’ festival in Lake Macquarie this weekend. James has been invited to be part of the exciting program at Toronto Library, including a conversation with journalist Scott Bevan and a panel exploring fact in crime fiction. Joining her will be New York Times bestselling crime author Candice Fox, young adult novelist Kaz Delaney and thriller writer Jaye Ford, among others. There will be zine-writing workshops as well as a creative Writing Gym session. James added these workshops and talks were vital in showing aspiring writers, who might be on the very cusp she was all those years ago, that they already have it within them to become an author. “It’s that old saying: 1% talent and 99% perspiration, and you won’t know if you don’t try,” she said. Renovation inspiration Drab driveways
reno special
Transforming your driveway is as easy as any paint project and much more affordable than resurfacing, giving an uplift in value for a minor investment. White Knight DIY and renovation expert Cherie Barber shares her top tips on how to give concrete a new lease of life with White Knight Ultra Pave.
Prime: Before you start painting, prime your driveway by giving your surface another good sweep and make sure you have all the equipment you need – a paint brush, paint pots, roller tray and an extension roller. Use a roller with a 10mm nap to achieve a professional finish, easily.
Prep: If you’re painting smooth concrete such as garage floors or new concrete around a pool, use Ultra Pave Concrete Etcher to roughen the surface and help the paint bond to the concrete. Mixing half a kilo with five litres of water, evenly pour over the dissolved mixture over the concrete and scrub with a broom, leaving it to foam up for a couple of minutes, being careful not to let it dry. Preparing the surface correctly will ensure long-lasting results. A crucial first step is to high-pressure wash your surface, then allow to dry for 24 hours before painting.
Paint: Paint all the edges first with a paint brush, and any joins in the concrete, then paint the remaining area using a roller with an extension pole. Wait two hours before applying your second coat. For added grip, or if you’re on a slope, add Ultra Pave Topcoat Grip Additive to your second coat, pouring one litre of paint into a roller tray and as you stir, add 2-3 scoops of the grip additive per litre of paint. The second coat is now ready to apply, in a similar way you applied the first, painting the edges with a brush then using a roller for the remaining area.
BEFORE
AFTER Before and after: As well as updating your driveway, White Knight DIY and Renovation Expert Cherie Barber says “additional finishing touches like plants, mailboxes and house numbers can also help spruce your home up instantly”.

As apartment living for Australian families reaches an unprecedented high, consider transporting traditional backyard features to the roof. Photo: Jason Busch
Create a rooftop oasis Just because you live in an apartment without a backyard, doesn’t mean you have to give up all of the advantages that come with a domestic garden
space. Maximise the land available and try to include a garden everywhere – even over structures – and create a green rooftop oasis to benefit not only

health, lifestyle and property value, but the environment as well. Landart Landscapes’ Matt Leacy outlines his top tips for creating a cost-efficient and sustainable green roof: Due diligence: Engage a structural engineer to check that the roof is properly intact and suitable for the type of rooftop space you’re planning. It’s also essential to check with your local government to make sure your garden plans are compliant with state and local legislation and regulations, and to gain approvals if necessary. In most Australian areas, a green roof will require the lodgement of a development application. What to plant: Think about the style you want your green roof to have, as well as your intended uses for it. In Australia, many roofs need to contend with extreme weather
conditions year-round. You’ll ideally want to work with plant species that are hardy and weather resistant, as well as suitable in size for the rooftop space. Plants that flourish in containers are often best for growing in manmade spaces like rooftops. Consider fake: Artificial turf brings with it a comparable look and feel to natural grass, but with far less watering and maintenance requirements. You also won’t need to cut the grass, and you can let pets and little ones play on it without bringing dirt, mud and grass back into the home. However, if you can keep your grass real, that’s always Matt’s first choice. Other considerations include maintenance requirements (weeding, watering, fertilising) and rooftop features (decking, paving or water features through to dining tables, outdoor kitchens or firepits).
in the garden
Gardens of white Last week I covered the vibrant colours of autumn; now, a swing to whites, which are planted during autumn and winter, ready for spring. Once an all-white garden was the rage; Iceberg roses dominated the landscape and in some ways still do. They are hard to beat for continual flowering and used in more formal gardens. A newer trend has moved towards Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ and ‘Teddy Bear’, which produce large, white blooms on these hardy plants. They are a little more expensive than a massproduced plant, but they are grafted and create an instant affect. Underplant with Gardenia Florida, which enjoys the same pH as the magnolias. Both like to be fed with cow manure. If your garden space is restricted, plant pots of white New Guinea Impatiens, which flower continually through all the seasons. This is a great time to plant out annuals and perennials such as salvia and Primula obconica, which is a beautiful white perennial that can also be grown in pots for indoors. It is the larger-leaved form of primula, which
can be highlighted by the smaller flowered Primula Gillhams white. This intensely white annual looks great planted behind a row of parsley – yes, parsley; its great depth providing contrast to the white primula, and how useful for cooking. Pansies are popular through winter and spring for those lovers of pure white in the pots and gardens. Readers would be surprised how many gardeners only want white! A quick trip inside – the magic of white Cymbidium orchids can’t be beaten. Their lovely green, strappy foliage with the long stems of orchids standing tall provide a dramatic show for many months. Me, I rely on the old faithful Spathyfillum, known by many names – Madonna Lilly, Peace Lily, whichever; they never stop producing those beautiful lily-like blooms above their foliage. The best part about this plant is it droops when thirsty. Pop it in the sink for a good soaking and it will reward with an instant thanks. Nearly forgot the white purity of cyclamen, a great indoor plant for winter.
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
THIS WEEK • Lime the soil before planting peas – climbing beans find the winter too cold. • Fertilise indoor plants with slow release in preparation of winter. Apply Green Flourish until the end of May, when houseplants need a sleep until spring. • Lift and divide rhubarb crowns.

Bathroom basics:
shower installation If your bathroom feels dated or in need of an upgrade, spruce it up with new tapware and accessories. Methven’s licensed plumber, Pino Tarquinio, gives his top tips for a simple DIY shower installation. Preparation
Tool kit
Before deciding on your new fittings, Pino says it’s important to consider who will use the shower, and to measure the height of your current shower water outlet from the ground up. “A typical Australian home has a shower outlet height of about 1800-1900mm,” Pino says. “This will help you choose the new shower type and prevent any issues with it being too high or low once installed.”
To install a new shower or other bathroom fittings yourself, it’s ideal to have some prior handyman experience. Depending on the type of shower you choose, you’ll need: • Power drill with a masonry drill bit or diamond-tip drill bit (if you need to drill new holes in tiles); • Adjustable spanner; • Screwdriver; • Water spray bottle; • Bathroom silicone/sealant; and • Teflon tape.
Safety first Pino recommends setting down a drop-sheet or floor covering before the installation to prevent any potential damage to the floor. It also acts as slip protection.
Installation “My number one rule is to read the instructions,” Pino says. If you decide to retro-fit a new rail shower in the place of an existing rail shower, he says “it’s as easy as securing the adjustable wall mounting brackets into your existing installation holes – no need to drill new holes. Just be sure to measure the distance between the mounting points first”. “After removing the old shower, it’s best to reseal around the water outlet using bathroom silicone. This will make sure the hole is watertight before fixing the new shower.” After removing an old shower and sealing around the outlet, Pino also recommends resealing the raw pipework that comes out of the wall before fitting the new shower.
“To do this, use a good amount of Teflon tape and, in a clockwise direction, wrap the tape around the pipe 8-10 times. When screwing the shower on, never rotate it backwards; if you do you must reapply the tape again so you don’t compromise the water-tight seal.” If you’re drilling new holes into the wall, make sure to spray the drill bit where it’s contacting the tile with the water bottle to keep the drill bit from overheating. Don’t apply too much pressure on the drill as you could crack the tiles and take care as there are pipes in the wall cavities. A good tip is to use tape to mark your drill bit at about 20-25mm so you know when to stop. For a complete bathroom upgrade, Pino suggests following the same advice to install matching fittings, such as towel rails and accessories, for a seamless high-end finish. However, if looking to update tapware fittings, it’s recommended that you seek a licensed plumber to carry out the installation.

When to renovate If you love the location of your home or can’t find suitable land for building a new one, it’s time to consider renovating or remodelling. Some advantages of renovating include: saving money on selling and moving costs; improving the value of your home; and it’s a sustainable alternative to a new build. But while you might think a few quick and simple DIY upgrades will enhance your home’s appearance and value, there’s more to it. Projects – big and small – might not be as easy as you think, so be sure to research and

invest in the right areas, as well as understand the challenges and risks involved. Top considerations include: Know your capabilities: Anything that involves electrical work, plumbing, asbestos, window repairs, roof repairs and tree removal needs a qualified tradie. Set a budget: Knowing your limits is crucial. Sometimes DIY can cost you more in equipment, time and repairs than if you used professional trades or services.

Stop work and start your sea change The sea change lifestyle is hitting an all-time high with downsizers moving to popular coastal regions and, from all reports, now’s the time to jump on this ‘mega-trend’ while conditions are perfect. Social analyst, Mark McCrindle says Australia’s suburbs are undergoing significant transformation with people moving across more communities than ever before, including downsizers seeking a sea or tree change. And the advice is to consider making the lifestyle change sooner rather than leaving the move too late. Downsizers residing in cap-
ital cities in large family homes are cashing in on high real estate sales with a solid wave of first and second home buyers snapping up their empty nests, but these perfect conditions are not expected to last forever. ABS census data supports the sea and tree change ‘mega-trend’ reporting an increase in people settling outside capital cities, with the highest rates of internal migration in coastal and regional towns across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. And as downsizers go in search of a better lifestyle for their golden years, it’s important they find an affordable and
sustainable housing solution. The fastest form of affordable housing currently being built in Australia is over 55s lifestyle communities developed under the land lease ownership model. One such operator leading the industry is Ingenia Lifestyle who are experiencing record levels of downsizers seeking a new lifestyle change. Ingenia Chief Operating Officer, Nikki Fisher, said 70,000 Australians live in land lease communities, providing an attractive offering for downsizers to live a leisurely lifestyle along with an improvement in finances and a decrease in
stress levels. “Land lease living is an increasingly popular option for the independent and active over 55s as it protects our resident’s financial security and independence and is a simple and transparent model to understand. “Ingenia’s innovative land lease ownership model allows a downsizer to purchase a new home, lease the land and gain from the financial and lifestyle benefits that come with community living. “With a growing demand for our lifestyle communities in regional and coastal locations, we encourage down-
sizers to start looking at their options today and fast-track their downsizing plans while the market conditions are favourable,” Nikki said. Latitude One is selling brand new homes from $445,000 with the unique land lease model eliminating the need for purchasers to pay stamp duty. Additionally, there are no exit/DMF fees, no body corporate or strata fees and, if eligible, residents may also access rent assistance on the weekly site fee. PICK OF THE WEEK John Wick Saturday, GO!, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2014) Keanu Reeves (pictured) is in top form as a former hitman in this frightening fight-fest. Reeves plays title character John Wick, who decides it’s time to get back into the game after losing his wife and the puppy she gave him in brutal circumstances. Iosef (Alfie Allen) causes all sorts of trouble when he harms what John holds dear. Everyone, even the cops, know John means business and so follows some of the most violent scenes of recent memory. Violent, yes. Too good to pass up, also yes.
Friday
Mary Poppins
Thor Sunday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2011) Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (pictured) is charismatic as the Marvel Comics superhero. An engaging mix of Norse mythology and pulp fantasy, it follows the warrior to Earth after his banishment from Asgard, a supernatural kingdom where his brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), has usurped the throne. Some clunky dialogue, but for sheer spectacle it delivers plenty. The blockbuster doesn’t get any bigger than this. Huge sets, bulging muscles, thundering voices and an epic backstory.
Friday, GO!, 6.30pm, G (1964) There’s certainly something about Mary that enlivens the senses. Full of timeless tunes, engaging characters and colourful adventures, this started the world’s love affair with Julie Andrews (pictured)– you would have to have been living in a cave to not be familiar with the super-nanny character or songs like A Spoonful of Sugar or Supercalifragilistice xpialidocious. Even Dick Van Dyke’s dodgy cockney accent is not without its charm. A family classic.

Cook like a Ninja
Nollsy’s back on tour
The Foodi (RRP $399), is the perfect all-in-one appliance to create delicious roast meals, hearty stews and tasty curries this winter, especially those days that you just need some quick and easy comfort food. The Ninja Foodi allows you to grill, bake, roast, pressure cook, sauté, air fry and slow cook much faster, without compromising on flavour or moisture. It even speeds up your cooking process by 70% compared to traditional cooking methods. It’s particularly handy for busy parents and professionals, as you can use it to make delicious, slow-cooked meals when you get home from work without waiting hours for it to roast, and even cook meat from frozen. Learn more at ninjakitchen.com.au

ACTS OF KINDNESS Acts of kindness are one of Shieldy’s favourite things. It’s so easy to be kind and it always makes a positive impact so, whenever Shieldy spots an act of kindness – and he often does – he is the first to reward it with a happy wave or his signature Shieldy handshake.
My favourite things VOLUNTEERS The Salvation Army relies on volunteers to support their work. Whether it’s lending a hand to prepare a community lunch, volunteering to be a Drive For Life mentor or giving just a few hours to help at a Red Shield Appeal collection, Shieldy knows that every volunteer makes a difference and every volunteer is valued.
EVENTS
Shieldy
Shieldy loves a crowd! Whether it’s watching the Newcastle Jets with a stadium full of fans or hanging out with the bikers at the Newcastle Toy Run, he just can’t get enough of a big occasion.
THE SALVATION ARMY MASCOT
Shieldy is the fun and fabulous face of The Salvation Army! A Novocastrian through and through, Shieldy is often spotted out and about socialising with the locals and reminding people of the importance of a smile and a happy wave.
A LITTLE PAMPERING Every now and then Shieldy treats himself to a touch of pampering. Life is busy and it’s important to take care of yourself. So, when there’s a gap in Shieldy’s crazy social calendar, he loves nothing more than a good scrub and maybe even a splash of scent.
The month of May is Red Shield Appeal time for the Salvos so, right now, Shieldy is especially busy. He’s visiting shopping centres and attending special events across the region to help raise much-needed funds for The Salvation Army’s social services in the Hunter. On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 May, you might even see Shieldy at your door as he joins an army of volunteer collectors that visit homes as part of the Salvos’ Doorknock Weekend. Imagine that, Shieldy at your front door; it’s a smile that will make your day! 54
NEWCASTLE Newcastle is Shieldy’s favourite place to be. With its amazing beaches, fantastic cafés and wonderful people, this incredible city makes it easy for Shieldy to keep on smiling.
