thursday 30 may 2019

This week... From the editor After one or two false starts during an unseasonably dry autumn (I'm not complaining), it looks like winter is finally setting in. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of the colder months (I couldn't live somewhere like London or Scotland!), but I came across a piece of writing by American author, Mari Andrew, not long ago that so beautifully expressed why we should appreciate changing seasons – both in Mother Nature and in life. It was an excerpt from Andrew's book, Am I There Yet?, and I'm going to share a snippet with you to give you greater perspective of the season of life you're in at this very moment. "Life has seasons that mimic the Earth's seasons: times of abundance, times of cultivation. Fall is a season of loss, but it shows you upfront what you're losing. "That's what my job at the law firm was: an autumn. It didn't feel like a season at the time; it felt like the rest of my life. That's how seasons feel when you're living them, and then your surroundings transform just as you're getting settled in. "Just like seasons of the year, seasons of life don't have a finish line. Wearing a sundress in the middle of winter isn't going to make it go by any faster."

news Trial to revolutionise cervical cancer screening

Family Planning NSW Newcastle GP Shannon Forsyth. Photo: Peter Stoop

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has ushered in a generation of women who are better protected against cervical cancers. So, what’s the most effective way to screen for them in these women, aged 25 to 38, who have received a series of Gardasil injections, most

likely at high school? That’s what the second phase of a world-first clinical trial, led by the VCS Foundation and Cancer Council NSW, aims to find out. The first phase of the Compass Trial effected major changes to the National Cervical Screening

Program in 2017, whereby the Cervical Screening Test replaced the Pap test, and the frequency was reduced from every two years in women aged 18 or older, to every five years in women aged 25 or older. Phase two will focus more narrowly on the most effective screening strategies. Some 7,500 Australian women aged 25 to 38 are still needed to participate in the study. Family Planning NSW is the only clinic in Newcastle recruiting participants, in addition to its Ashfield, Fairfield and Penrith clinics. Newcastle GP Shannon Forsyth said in the randomised, controlled trial, women would be given one of two, equally-safe screening tests to help determine the best method. “The results will then inform how we screen and prevent cervical cancer, both nationally and on a

global scale,” Mrs Forsyth said. Associate Professor Marion Saville, co-principal investigator and VCS Foundation executive director, said nearly all cervical cancers were caused by persistent infection with certain types of HPV. “HPV testing is a better way to find lesions that otherwise may become cancers but we are also using the trial to identify the best way to refine the testing, which, in turn, will help avoid sending too many healthy women for further tests,” she said. The Compass Trial is the largest clinical trial ever to be conducted in Australia, aiming to recruit 82,303 women by 30 November. Residents show their charitable side Sound the alarm – Williamtown Salt Ash Fire Brigade’s coffers are now $2,000 fatter thanks to the generous bunch at Banksia Grove. The residents of the over-50s village in Williamtown raised more than $1,000 for the service through two garage sales, to which they donated various items for sale, from clothes and jewellery to furniture and bric-a-brac. Richard Black (group manager residents relations at Hampshire Property Group, which encompasses Banksia Grove) then matched the donation dollar-for-dollar on behalf of the Hampshire group. The donation was gifted to the fire brigade by residents committee president, Dot Harland, at a Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser last Friday. Williamtown Salt Ash Fire Brigade is always the first to respond when the village is under threat from fire. “It is always a great pleasure to help the brigade,” Dot said. “They do so much for our residents, from

checking smoke alarms to fighting bush fires. We hope this money raised can help towards buying of new equipment to make their job easier in the future.” To mark the occasion, they couldn’t pass up a photo opportunity with the crew and fire truck. Money raised at Friday’s Biggest Morning Tea went to the Cancer Council to help fund cancer research and support programs – a total of $2,000. Hampshire group donated $500 of this, in addition to contributions from Medowie Pharmacy, Marketplace Raymond Terrace, Woolworths Central Plaza, Raymond Terrace, and of course the generous residents of Banksia Grove.

Three break-ins – two attempted and one successful – have prompted Elermore Vale Men’s Shed to appeal for the community’s help. The culprit or culprits broke into the shed between Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 May and stole a lawn mower, two whipper snippers, whipper snipper cord, leaf blower and two red fuel cans. All but one of the whipper snippers was Ryobi branded, with the markings EVMS + date, making them easily identifiable if found. The men’s shed bought the equipment last year with a grant from Good 2 Give Stockland Jesmond. The break-in – where a lock and the main window were broken, leaving blood everywhere – followed two earlier attempts the weekend after Easter. Police took photos of fingerprints and DNA from a blood sample. Anyone with information is urged to contact local police on 13 14 44.

Partnership to protect island ecosystems in the Pacific Kosi Latu knows sunken World War II wrecks in the Pacific Ocean have long been regarded “as a problem, as a challenge”, but he is determined to change the narrative. There are thousands of wrecks registered globally, with the most

8

vulnerable locations deemed to be in the Pacific Region. A remediation program was launched on board a refurbished New Zealand Navy vessel, MV Ocean Recovery, in Newcastle harbour, Carrington, last week to

protect island ecosystems from damage caused by oil spills. It is the result of a partnership between the non-profit Major Projects Foundation, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), and the University of Newcastle. SPREP’s director general, Mr Latu, says the issue of sunken warships is not new. “It is a very complicated issue because of political components, there are financial elements to it, and most of these sunken warships are either Japanese or American,” he says. “So, while our interest is in looking up the implications on the environment, we’re very aware that some of these sites are [ones] where we want to maintain the sanctity of their cultural value, but some are also war graves.” Despite the challenges, Mr Latu believes it is the right time to act. He added the problem was first

raised with member countries in the early-to-late 1990s. A database created at the time told them how many ships were there, but they could not take it any further. “When we’re talking about the marine environment, we’re talking about an ocean that is over [60] million square [miles] – it is the biggest ocean, it’s bigger than the moon,” he says. “We want to say to Pacific island countries: ‘Yes, it is a challenge, it is a problem, but, through this partnership, we really think that we can provide some of the solutions.’ “It starts with verifying and validating the data.” The program wants to identify wrecks that pose the biggest risk of an oil spill, so that sub-engineers and other experts can then look at possible techniques to prevent it. These include hot-tapping to pump out the oil directly from the tanks; cathodic protection of the

ship’s hull to stop it from rusting further and to stimulate marine growth on the wreck; and using bacteria that can eat and break down oil − a process known as bioremediation. Teams will use the MV Ocean Recovery vessel to explore priority shipwrecks. Built in 1979, it was purchased by Hunter-based philanthropists, Paul and Wilma Adams, who formed Major Projects Foundation in July 2018 to investigate damage to coastal or sea life and coral reefs. Mr Adams says it is a matter of urgency.

“A few years ago, on a diving trip, we noticed oil leaking slowly from a number of wrecks,” he says. “Nearby communities are deeply worried about large amounts of oil spilling out when the wrecks collapse completely. “There are only a few years left before rust takes its toll.”

MV Ocean Recovery will remain in Newcastle harbour for the next month and then conduct training and research work off the Australian coast. She will then be berthed at the Maritime Museum in Sydney, before being assigned to priority wrecks in the Pacific. - Ben Murphy

They cleared an estimated 163,000 square metres of invasive plants such as bitou bush and lantana, replacing them with 11,300 native seedlings. “We have groups right across Lake Macquarie working on foreshores, sand dunes, creek lines and bushland reserves,” he said. “They are an excellent way to get out and do something for your local community, to meet new people and to learn new skills.” Visit lakemacquarielandcare. org for more information.

An army of green-thumbed volunteers is celebrating two decades of caring for the environment in Lake Macquarie. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Lake Mac’s Landcare partnership, pooling together the efforts of more than 200 groups across the city, as well as Lake Macquarie council. Coordinator Jason Harvey said it had seen local grassroots groups restore, rehabilitate and conserve huge tracts of land. He added Lake Macquarie Landcare’s recognition in 2016 as the best Landcare partnership in Australia demonstrated the initiative’s ongoing success. “Without our amazing volunteers, this organisation would not exist,” Mr Harvey said. “We are indebted to them always, but [last] week – being National Volunteer Week –

Maitland council’s manager of community and recreation, Laurie D’Angelo, at the indoor pool.

Pool report makes a splash A performance review of Maitland’s this month. It noted the Maitland aquatic centres has made quite a and East Maitland centres had splash after it revealed more than performed well amid a period of 210,000 people poured through the change. This was largely due to turnstiles over the past financial the construction and subsequent year alone. unveiling of a $9.7 million, 25-metre The report was discussed at indoor pool in July 2017. Maitland council’s latest meeting The report highlighted a steady 190401_CG_NWeekly_HALF_01.qxp_Newcastle Weekly 1/04/2019 3:41 PM Page 1

increase in attendance figures at Maitland, jumping from 99,230 in the 2014/15 financial year to 170,376 in 2017/18. East Maitland attracted 43,086 visitors in 2014/15, which rose to 50,965 in 2016/17, but dipped to 40,035 in 2017/18. The council’s manager of community and recreation, Laurie D’Angelo, said a key focus of the review was to reflect on how the indoor pool had performed in its first full year. “When we looked at that across the industry benchmarking, it was really positive – there was a high attendance rate,” she said. “So, based on that, and the opportunity to even enhance the service offered for a facility that is already popular, council decided to maintain the management of the pools. “[This] is fantastic because it means we can now have a look at other opportunities.

“Maitland has been very popular with the indoor pool coming on board. “But the benefit of East Maitland is you’ve got these beautiful grassy surrounds and lovely open space for people to come and have a picnic. “So, what we’ll be looking at is how we can enhance [those facilities].” Apart from attendance figures, the report also revealed both pools’ financial performances. Maitland’s operational income in 2017/18 was $967,568, while its expenditure was $1,382,485. This meant its cost recovery was 70%. In contrast, East Maitland had an operational income of $158,916 and an expenditure of $426,681, which amounted to a cost recovery of 37% for the same period. The review targeted an increase in cost recovery to over 80% and 40% respectively. - Ben Murphy

cover story Knight’s quest to smite brain cancer It’s a story that lends itself beautifully to a fairytale, but which also serves as a reminder that not everyone gets their happily ever after. The Mark Hughes Foundation’s sixth annual Beanie for Brain Cancer fundraising campaign depicts Mark Hughes as a brave knight whose quest is to defeat the evil disease. The former Newcastle Knight and brain cancer survivor rises to the challenge in a full suit of shining armour, while ex-teammate Paul “Chief” Harragon reads the once-upon-a-time story to Hughes’ seven-year-old daughter, Bonnie. The seed was sown in 2014 after the foundation’s first campaign selling beanies, spurred by Hughes’ shock diagnosis in 2013. “Early in the peace, we felt there was something special brewing in these beanies,” Mark told Newcastle Weekly. “[Chief] said, “There’s magic in these beanies, mate,” and, as it turns out, he was right.” Over the years, the flagship fundraiser and supporter events have raked in more than $10 million to bankroll brain cancer research. In March, the foundation’s scientific committee

distributed more than $725,000 among five innovative research projects. Most of the research funded is done locally at the Hunter Medical Research Institute. Hughes pointed to “catastrophic” statistics and survival rates – including the fact that brain cancer kills more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer – to accentuate why the fight was far from over. “It’s very important that we keep the foot on full throttle,” he said. “There are so many others out there that need answers and need them fast.” Still undergoing regular check-ups after intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment after his initial diagnosis, Hughes is supported by his wife, Kirralee, and their three children, Dane, Zac and Bonnie, as together they strive for a world without brain cancer. One way you can help is by buying a beanie from your local stockist when they go on sale from Saturday 1 June. This year Lowes has come on board in addition to IGA stores in NSW and selected outlets in Queensland.

Suffering with Eczema? Atopic Dermatitis

news Fundraiser for vital Lifeline service It is 17 months since her husband Peter died by suicide; 12 since her 19-year-old daughter Chelsey also took her life. Gillieston Heights woman Vicki Mendyk tried to see several counsellors to help her deal with the grief and loss, before she came across Lifeline’s face-to-face counselling service. “The Lifeline counsellor gave me the support I required; showing me great compassion and understanding,” Mrs Mendyk said. She hosted a high tea in Morpeth this month as a token of her appreciation. It attracted more than 250 people and raised $15,000 for the service, which is provided for free at the Rutherford Neighbourhood Centre each Friday. Mrs Mendyk thanked her husband’s former employer, JMG Maintenance at Muswellbrook, for catering the high tea, and added that Specsavers Kotara had generously pledged to donate 10 cents from every pair of glasses sold over a 12-month period to Lifeline. “I was so happy and grateful that so many people came to support me and Lifeline,” she

said. Speaking at the event, Lifeline’s executive director in the Hunter, Rob Sams, believed the funding was vital in helping the charity to keep providing the service for free. He praised Mrs Mendyk for creating an opportunity for people to speak freely about suicide and thanked those who attended for their generosity. Lifeline has provided 3,000 face-to-face counselling sessions in the Hunter over the past 12 months. Mr Sams said community funding was needed to continue to expand the service. “Lifeline’s face-to-face counselling is for anyone who is not coping, whether it be a personal or relationship issue, as well as people who have thoughts of suicide,” he said. “Our highly-trained counsellors help those in crisis but also prevent people from reaching a crisis point. “Many people can’t afford a private psychologist or to wait for a public system appointment. “This service is an example of how Lifeline

works with the community, in the community.” Suicide is the leading cause of death for all Australians aged between 15 and 44. Eight people die by suicide every day. Phone Lifeline on 4940 2000 to book a counselling session or visit lifelinehunter.org.au/ find-help/ for more information. If this story raises an issue for you, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Program puts teens on right track Teens with a disability can slip on their joggers and race towards better health and wellbeing after the launch of a unique program in the Hunter Region. The 12-week Run for Life initiative involves an individual assessment by a physiotherapist, including a video analysis of the participant’s running style, to strengthen their body and boost movement skills and mental stamina. Run for Life is a partnership between the Cerebral Palsy Alliance and the nib foundation, which funded the program. Sessions are available once a week for 13-to18-year-olds in Newcastle, East Maitland and Tuggerah. Cerebral Palsy Alliance therapy manager, Sue Cook, says the program aims to improve young people’s quality of life. “Children with disabilities are nine times more likely to report cardiovascular disease and diabetes due to common symptoms such as chronic pain, as well as physical limitations like walking and talking, which can impact the amount of activity they can do,” Mrs Cook says. “Run Squad, as the kids like to call it because

they like the idea of being part of a ‘squad’, aims to improve these statistics by helping young teens to develop gross motor skills that will help them get to the point where they can participate in school activities and build social connections at the same time.” Symone Cunningham says the program has already been of benefit to her son, Joel, as well as her daughter, Maddie, who gets to join in with him. “I find, in Joel’s case, it’s developed his running technique and also strengthened his abilities,” she says. “He is already limited in what he can do, so this squad has helped to break down the barriers a little bit. “It is a really positive environment for him to achieve anything; it’s not a competition and is very empowering. “For Maddie, she gets to be a part of his progress and development as well, she’s not just sitting in the shadows, so that makes her feel important too. “The Cerebral Palsy Alliance, as a not-for-profit,

Joel and Maddie Cunningham at one of the Run for Life events.

relies on the community’s support, so for them to give that back to the kids is really important and we appreciate it as parents.” The Cerebral Palsy Alliance operates from 112 sites throughout metropolitan, regional and rural NSW and the ACT. Families who want to get involved in the program can email cpfadmin@cerebralpalsy.org.au or phone the alliance on 4979 4333. - Ben Murphy

news White eager to gain edge for state championships Thornton’s Cammilla White was at a crossroads. In 2014, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and spent 12 months learning to deal with the condition. After throwing herself into exercise, she eventually turned her attention to powerlifting. “I find it really empowering for females to go and lift some heavy weights,” she says. “Women are strong by nature, but this adds an extra layer to that and it’s something that really appealed to me. “Being a diabetic, increasing muscle also helps to maintain sugar levels and minimise the amount of insulin needed.” Now into her fourth year of competitive lifting, White will join more than 100 other athletes

at Body 360, Swansea, to contest the Australian Powerlifting Union (APU) NSW state championships this weekend. She has set her sights on taking back the number one spot in the 84kg open women’s class after finishing second at the 2018 national championships. Her training regime leading into a competition usually consists of squatting four times a week, starting at 120 kgs; bench-pressing around 70kgs three times a week; and deadlifting what she can on the day, often about 150kgs. “The feeling you get when you deadlift 100kgs, when you get to triple figures for the first time, is amazing,” White says. “The community that we have here is very supportive as well – if

you see people lifting heavy in the gym, you try and cheer them on.” Apart from White, the state championships will also boast the likes of current world champion, Rachel Jones, and multiple world record holder and powerlifting legend, Max Bristow. sport Knights hammer defending premiers to maintain streak It was a performance reminiscent of a bygone era as the Newcastle Knights hammered Sydney Roosters 38-12 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday to make it five wins on the trot. The Knights, roared on by a red-and-blue army of 25,929, were electric from the opening whistle and went ahead early. Daniel Saifiti stripped the ball and a panicked Roosters outfit held up play for too long. Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga booted the subsequent penalty goal. The Knights’ defensive pressure then forced Sydney half Luke Keary into an ill-advised pass, which Hymel Hunt gleefully snatched out of the air. He sprinted away to score under the sticks to put Newcastle up 8-0. The Knights added another two

points soon afterwards when a Mitchell Pearce kick was spilled by the Roosters. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves gave away a penalty in the next play for holding down Ponga. The rattled defending premiers finally broke through after some clever work from fullback James Tedesco, who took the quick tap from a penalty and weaved his way across the line. However, Newcastle hit back as Ponga produced his trademark step to beat three defenders to the line. In another moment of magic, the Knights’ superstar then went into dummy-half and fired a bullet pass for Pearce to score with just a minute and a half left until the break. The wave of momentum fuelled Newcastle in the second period, with

Connor Watson next to score after he raced through a gap and slid over. Ponga made it 28-6, and added two more when the Roosters were penalised again. A controversial hit by WaereaHargreaves on Ponga forced the crowd-pleaser from the field. The Roosters couldn’t contain the Knights’ drive though and, with Ponga off, Mitch Barnett banged over another penalty kick for 32-6. Pearce then sealed the match in the 70th minute when he guided a

pinpoint pass to Edrick Lee, who scored in the corner. Barnett nailed the conversion from the sideline. The Roosters managed a late consolation try through Siosiua Taukeiaho. Newcastle will face the ladderleading South Sydney Rabbitohs on Friday 7 June at 6pm. Meanwhile, three Knights have been selected for this Wednesday night’s State of Origin, game one. David Klemmer lines up in the forwards for NSW, while Ponga and Tim Glasby are in Queensland’s 18-man squad.

Northstars show grit on road Newcastle silenced critics who were sceptical the team could continue its winning ways on the road in Melbourne by digging deep to claim a 4-3 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday and a 6-4 win against the Ice on Sunday. It came after the Mustangs snapped the Northstars’ unbeaten start to the season the week prior. Newcastle head coach John Kennedy Jr said he was “happy with where we are at” after five straight double header weekends and just one loss so far. “For us as a team, we didn’t step back all weekend,” Kennedy said. “Even though we were one import short, we were still able to answer. “It has been the tale of our team so far – we’re a team unit; each and every player contributes. “To take nine out of 10 games, we couldn’t be happier with the

first third of the season. “We’re looking forward to the next couple of one game weekends and a bye weekend, which will be great to heal some of the injuries.” Long-time Newcastle player Matt Wetini, who stepped back from the team this season, was called up to replace injured import Dominik Gabaj. Wetini went on to score the game-winner against the Mustangs. The Northstars’ Czech import, Ondrej Smach, then ended his stint in Australia by scoring the winner against the Ice. Newcastle will face the Sydney Bears away on Sunday 2 June from 5pm. 19

Nuts about nuts

Adding nuts to your favourite winter dishes is a delicious and nutritious way to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Creamy broccoli, chicken & wild rice soup By Melanie Lionello for Nuts for Life Serves: 6 2 broccoli heads, cut into florets and stalks diced 1 red onion, peeled and sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 4 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2L salt-reduced chicken stock 1 cup wild rice 3 chicken thighs, sliced 1 cup almonds ¼ cup cashews 2 sprigs of thyme 1 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper to taste Juice of one lemon

In a large, heavy based saucepan, saute onion in 3 Tbsp of oil until translucent on medium heat. Add garlic and saute for a minute until fragrant. Add broccoli, thyme, cashews and stock and replace lid on saucepan. Simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes until broccoli is tender. Turn off heat. Remove thyme sprigs. Using a stick blender, blend the soup until smooth. You can also use a normal blender, using a ladle to transfer from the soup pot to the jug to blend. Once the soup is smooth, add wild rice and chicken. Simmer for 45 minutes until rice is tender. While the soup is simmering, preheat oven to 180 degrees. Add almonds, 1 Tbsp of oil, lemon juice and paprika to a baking tray and combine. The easiest way to do this is to ‘shuffle’ the almonds by quickly moving the tray side to side to coat them. Roast almonds for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Season soup with salt and pepper to your taste then serve soup with a handful of roasted almonds on top and some additional thyme if you like. You can also add a squeeze of grilled lemon over the soup for a citrus twist.

Healthy apple pie nut crumble By Rebecca Gawthorne for Nuts for Life Prep: 30 mins Cook: 30 mins Serves: 4 4 apples, washed and diced 1 ¼ cups plain rolled oats 60g Brazil nuts 60g cashews 1/4 cup desiccated coconut flakes 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp vanilla extract 4 tsp maple syrup 1 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 180C. In a large saucepan, gently heat ¼ cup of water and stir in 1 tsp of vanilla and 1 tsp of cinnamon. Once combined, add in diced apples and 1/2 of the Brazil nuts, 1/2 of the cashews and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes or until apples have softened, adding more water as needed. Place into a baking dish and set aside. Take remaining Brazil nuts and cashews and crush in a blender. Place in a mixing bowl. Place oats into the blender and quickly blitz so some oats form a powder, and some are still whole. Place in the mixing bowl with nuts and add coconut, olive oil and remaining cinnamon and vanilla. Evenly spoon crumble mixture on top of cooked apples mixture bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven, serve with yoghurt and drizzle with maple syrup.

Gardening star to headline festival Greek-Australian eco-gardening superstar Costa Georgiadis will headline an expanded Living Smart Festival in Lake Macquarie to help celebrate the landmark event’s 10th anniversary. The ABC’s Gardening Australia host and Gold Logie nominee is set to appear throughout the festival’s main activities on Saturday 28 September, talking about sustainable living, catching up with fans, and helping to judge the popular school gardens competition. “I want people to walk away with a few simple changes that will set the domino effect into place in their family, work and neighbourhood communities,” Georgiadis said.

28

“This event is a chance to pick up lots of little ideas and actions that we can all do every day to make a difference.” Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said Georgiadis’ inclusion in this year’s line-up was a perfect fit to mark 10 years of the festival’s growth and success. “Lake Mac’s Living Smart Festival has become one of the biggest and best environmentallyfocused annual community events in Australia,” Cr Fraser said. “So, it seemed only right to secure one of the biggest and best names in sustainable living for our 2019 instalment.” This year’s festival will see a return of the successful Feast for the Senses on Friday 27 September,

Costa Georgiadis will appear at the Living Smart Festival later this year.

with guests treated to a five-star meal under the stars in Speers Point Park, featuring a menu of locally sourced and sustainably farmed food. The main event will boast a day packed with fascinating workshops, cooking demonstrations, eco-living displays, guest appearances, food and market stalls, plant giveaways and the popular kids’ zone.

For the first time, this year’s event will include a family-friendly Sunday program of live music, entertainment and other activities. Further festival details, features and acts will be released closer to the date. Go to livingsmartfestival.com. au for more information or to complete a stallholder application form.

in the garden

Now that the weather has cooled, wait until July, or even August in frost-prone areas, to prune roses. Plant new roses into a good garden mix.

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

June gardening jobs This weekend sees the beginning of winter, the winter we all thought wasn’t coming as autumn has been so warm, but as I write this week’s column, the change has just hit.

Unfortunately, wind and a quick bit of rain may not be enough to put moisture back into the garden. It is easy when the weather becomes colder to neglect watering; it’s one

of the most common mistakes at this time of year. Pots may still need a daily drink and, if you are establishing new plants in the garden and it’s not raining, still water regularly. Now, to the many jobs needing attention in June. Firstly, I hope you remembered to take the tulips and hyacinths out of the fridge – if not, act quickly and plant as all spring bulbs need to be in the ground ready to emerge during winter. Pruning should be done carefully at this time of year, there are some trees and shrubs that will be unhappy being pruned during June, particularly in areas susceptible to frosts. It is fi ne to prune some hedges, but only lightly – Golden Duranta, Buxus and Murraya will respond to a light cut-back, but then feed these hedges with cow manure. Tropical species defi nitely shouldn’t be pruned during winter as they will be burnt by the cold

weather. As a result of the mild autumn, Sasanqua camellias are still flowering. They bloom for many months, are great specimen plants and ideal for screening along a narrow driveway. Once they have fi nished flowering, they can be pruned and fed with cow manure. One of the most rewarding annuals are pansies, which should be happy now that the weather has changed. Give them and other annuals a boost with Flourish, which can be applied weekly. Aerating the soil by turning it and lifting the seedlings enables them to take up the fertiliser. At this time of year, gardeners are always tempted to prune roses – but wait until July or even August in frost prone areas. If planting new roses, plant into a good garden mix but don’t fertilise as this could burn them; watering is enough until they settle in.

PICK OF THE WEEK Children Of Men Friday, SBS, 8.35pm, MA15+ (2006) Absolutely brilliant sci-fi thriller from director Alfonso Cuarón (Y Tu Mamá También). In a world where women are infertile, a onetime activist (Clive Owen, pictured) is forcibly recruited by his “terrorist” ex-lover (Julianne Moore) to escort humankind’s sole pregnant woman to safety. Featuring some of the finest hand-held camerawork you’ll ever see and one of the all-time great car getaways, action seems to materialise out of nowhere in Cuarón’s grim yet ultimately life-affirming film.

Thor: The Dark World

Bee Movie Saturday, GO!, 5.15pm, G (2007) Comedian Jerry Seinfeld buzzes onto the big screen in this animated feature about everything – everything related to the world of bees, that is. Seinfeld voices its hero Barry B. Benson (pictured), a free-spirited bee who shuns his role in the honey-making process. After falling in love with Vanessa Bloome (Renée Zellweger), Barry is horrified to find supermarkets selling honey. Enraged that bees are being exploited by humans, Barry takes them to court. This hilarious tale more than lives up to the buzz.

Sunday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2013) Aussie Chris Hemsworth (pictured) returns as the Norse god Thor in this dark Marvel sequel that is peppered with welcome moments of humour. Back in the fantastical world of Asgard Loki (a fantastic Tom Hiddleston) is in prison, while on Earth scientist Jane (Natalie Portman) is trying to get on with life without Thor, but a normal existence is out of the question when she gets cursed with a powerful object. A fantastical action film, its real punch lies in its spellbinding special effects – and Hemsworth’s muscles.

The year ahead is a good time for Colin to express himself, to socialise and cultivate old friendships and make new ones, to be entertained and to entertain. Life should overflow with joy and enthusiasm. There will be very little to burden him, so he should take some time off. It’s time to have fun and enjoy life but avoid scattering his energies and taking on too many things at once. He must complete his current projects before taking on anything new.

Mars in your sign is flooding you with confidence and self-belief. Mercury is helping to sharpen your grey matter; this planetary influence makes you unbeatable in your personal or professional life. It’s an especially good time for those of you who are freelance workers or self-employed.

With Mars at the zenith of your chart, you’re going to be positively obsessed with climbing the ladder of success. You will need to work extremely hard to realise your ambitions, but then you have never been put off by the prospect of extra toil.

Mars and Saturn are both influencing you and they are not alone; there are at least five other planets in this placement in your chart. A very clear indication from the planets is that you will fare far better if you can cooperate with others, if only from time to time.

serious frame of mind. Perhaps they have suggestions they want to put to you which they feel you may not approve of. The best thing to do is to be open-minded and take at least 24 hours to consider their words.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY It is time to review your professional life quite seriously and decide what your next move should be. Luckily, with Saturn in Capricorn, you will do the right thing. So don’t allow yourself to be deflected by anybody else because if you do, you’ll be sorry.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The focus is on financial matters this week and you are taking the situation a lot more seriously than usual to avoid potentially serious consequences. You are choosing how you spend your money with a great deal more care and caution than is usually the case.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Life may seem as if it’s in the hands of fate as Mars is in your 12th house stirring up all sorts of issues and insecurities. If you require help, turn to the older or wiser members of your network because they’ll be only too willing to assist.

With Mars moving through Cancer the emphasis is on further education, long-distance travel, dealing with foreigners, learning about different cultures, art, music and the metaphysics. If you have booked your holiday for this time of the year, you’ll definitely have an interesting time and get good value for money.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

Mars is moving through the area of your chart devoted to teamwork, play, club activities, friends and acquaintances. You won’t have any time for feeling lonely, because the phone will be ringing and your emails will be overflowing with invites, news and gossip.

Mars will be moving along in the water sign of Cancer and this is the area of your chart devoted to business and people you are financially dependent upon, such as your boss or a business partner. Listen carefully to their suggestions, otherwise this could create some tension between you.

Mars is moving through the watery sign of Cancer, the area of your chart devoted to children, creativity, romance and good times. Hopefully, nobody’s going to take you too seriously, because that Pisces intensity seems to have temporarily deserted you and you’re far more frivolous than usual.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

It would be a good idea for you to look after your health and wellbeing more than usual. While an Aquarius hates to admit that there’s anything wrong with them, you must accept that you’re only human. If you don’t, you will suffer the consequences.

My FAMILy I’m the youngest of five children. I come from a large family and we all live locally, which makes family gatherings really fun. I love spending time with my nieces and nephews and it’s great when they can drop by the fire station.

My favourite things OLLy He’s a four-and-a-half-year-old, very intelligent, Red Australian Cattle Dog. We spend a lot of time at the beach and local dog parks. We really are lucky to have such great places and facilities for our pets locally. He’s my little shadow; we go everywhere together.

MUSIC My love of music started when I stole a Whispering Jack cassette from my sister when I was six years old. My first gig was the Newcastle Relief Concert.

Emma Drew

SENIOR FIREFIGHTER, FIRE AND RESCUE NSW

Emma Drew is a senior firefighter with Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), stationed at Toronto. Born and raised in Newcastle, Emma attended Warners Bay High School before going on to study sound engineering and music industry business. But it was while serving as a retained (on-call) firefighter that Emma decided it would make a great career. After being accepted and completing her training with FRNSW in 2006, Emma was sent to the busiest fire station in NSW, City of Sydney Fire Station. She has been stationed in FRNSW’s Newcastle zone for almost five years and worked at Hamilton, Lambton and now Toronto. “My favourite things about this job is the camaraderie and the fact that you never know what the day will bring,” she says. 62

TRAVEL I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places with family and friends. My favourite locations so far have been New york, Venice and Prague.

SEINFELD The show about nothing is a cult favourite among my family. So many daily occurrences can be related to a Seinfeld quote. I can pretty much quote every episode word for word, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that!”
