This week... From the editor We could all learn a thing or two from the strength and resilience displayed by this week’s cover star, 17-year-old paraathlete Aimee Fisher from Thornton. I met Aimee a few weeks ago at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Ball. By chance, I was seated next to her and her proud parents. Aimee was a guest at the ball, having been airlifted to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital by the rescue helicopter in December 2017. At the time, Aimee was a talented gymnast and ballerina. That was, until she fell off a bar and damaged her spinal cord. In a split second, her world was turned upside down, as she was told she would never walk again. Now, 18 months later, Aimee has just returned from her international wheelchair racing debut in Switzerland, where she took on some of the fiercest competition in the world. She might not have brought home any gold medals but that’s not going to stop her from vying for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Aimee has had this sense of quiet determination since she discovered wheelchair sports whilst still laying in her hospital bed, just days after surgery. It never ceases to amaze me, the attitude of gratitude some people have, despite the curveballs life has thrown them. That story on page 16. - Georgia Osland

news Return from the wilderness It has been five years since an historic organisation in Lake Macquarie shut its doors. The Carey Bay/Toronto Scout Group is on the hunt for new members to rekindle the passion that originally led to its formation in 1916. An information and fun day will take place from 10am to 2pm on Sunday 16 June for boys and girls aged between five and 17. Leader in charge, Diane Bellette, says she is excited about the group’s potential return after so long in the wilderness. “The kids started to dwindle off [five years ago] because the leaders were wanting to leave,” she says. “We couldn’t recruit at that time and then the last leader that was there had enough and decided to pull the pin. “I was [eventually] put in charge

and it was really daunting to start off with – it was the first group where there’s been nothing.” Despite this, Mrs Bellette was determined to try and spark the community’s interest. She set up meetings, created a social media account and organised information sessions, with her hard work leading to the recruitment of four new leaders so far. Now, she wants young people to come along and see what happens as a Scout. “It’s a real benefit for all kids to be able to try things that they haven’t done before, like abseiling, canoeing, rock climbing,” she says. “We want to get them away from their computers and Game Boys, we want to get them outdoors. “But the main aim is for kids to have fun.” Mrs Bellette has been involved

in Scouts for about three decades, while her husband, children and eldest grandchild have also gone through the system. She believes the experience is now more adventurous, challenging and inclusive. “It’s done a complete about-face; kids tell us now what they want to do, and we put a program together for them,” she says.

BEFORE

“It is more up-to-date these days and challenges their minds and bodies.” The information and fun day will be at the scout hall, 74 Excelsior Parade, Toronto. A follow-up event has also been organised for Wednesday 19 June from 7pm. Visit Carey Bay Toronto Scout Group on Facebook for more. - Ben Murphy

Sea of support for reconciliation Hundreds of hands waved in the wind to recognise National Reconciliation Week in Newcastle. Samaritans hosted two events last week at St Luke’s Anglican Church, Wallsend, and Christ Church Cathedral, wherein the Sea of Hands were planted outside. The Sea of Hands was first installed in front of Parliament House, Canberra, on 12 October 1997 as a powerful statement of solidarity with Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s temporary public installation of 800 hands aimed to bring people together to express a strong symbol of reconciliation. The theme for Reconciliation Week 2019, which went from 27 May to 3 June, was ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage.’ Samaritans chief executive, Brad Webb, said reconciliation could only be achieved if there was trust. “And trust requires the courage to have an honest, open conversation about our history,” he said.

The Sea of Hands out the front of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle.

The start and end of Reconciliation Week commemorated two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision. “Two years ago, we reached another milestone with the delivery of the Uluru Statement from the Heart providing Australia with a clear way forward to deliver reconciliation,” Mr Webb added. “We are asking the newly elected Morrison government to be courageous and take the next steps to bring the Uluru Statement to life.” It came as Mr Morrison appointed Ken Wyatt in his ministry as the first Indigenous member of parliament under the portfolio of Minister for Indigenous Affairs.

Newcastle council could opt to send an elected representative to a United Nations High-Level Political Forum in New York next month for as much as $8,000 per person. A report, discussed at the council’s latest meeting, recommended that either lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes or deputy lord mayor Declan Clausen attend the forum. The cost of the trip includes return airfares, four nights’ accommodation, and meals. The forum is the UN’s central platform for a follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which the council adopted last year. The agenda provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 SDGs, which recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve oceans and forests. The council voted to support an amended motion.

Labour of love to preserve piece of history Stepping inside Dobell House, you get an immediate sense of the character Sir William Dobell was. “He didn’t have a bedroom as such; he had an easel in every room and just conked out wherever he was,” Friends of Dobell vicepresident Sharon Pearl tells Newcastle Weekly. The revered Archibald Prize-

winning artist was born in Cooks Hill and moved to Wangi Wangi after a soul-destroying court case in 1943, in which he successfully challenged a claim that his painting of Joshua Smith was a caricature and not a portrait, and therefore not eligible for the Archibald Prize. The win came at the expense of Dobell’s health, and he retreated to

Wangi – sick, exhausted and unable to paint. A few years later, the scenery took his interest and he began to paint once more. In 1948, Dobell illustrated a portrait of young artist Margaret Olley, whom he met at a party, in a beautiful silk dress. He was seen running through

the streets of Sydney with the stillwet painting to submit it to the Art Gallery of NSW by the skin of his teeth before entries closed for the 1948 Archibald Prize, which he won. Dobell went on to win a third Archibald Prize, in 1959, for his portrait of Dr Edward MacMahon, who had operated on Dobell in 1957 after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Dobell lived in Wangi with his sister, Alice, until he died in 1970. His home and studio are now preserved as accurately as possible by Friends of Dobell, a volunteer organisation that jointly owns the heritage listed property. The group is made up of about 30 volunteers, although numbers are dwindling due to age and ill health; and receives no permanent funding, apart from the money it raises through busloads of visitors and the occasional government grant.

Clinical Trial for Seniors

Rough ride from top to bottom of Australia Mishaps with his motorbike and unkind weather were the two main challenges for Hunter man Gerald Frogley when he rode more than 12,000 kilometres in 28 days. Mr Frogley’s Ride Around Australia for Disability saw him, and his two-person support crew, traverse the highest, lowest, most northern and most southern points in the country. This included Mount Kosciuszko in NSW, South Australia’s Lake Eyre, Cape York in Queensland, and Tasmania’s South Cape. “[We] averaged around 450 kilometres per day, it was a demanding ride with extreme conditions,” Mr Frogley said. “The weather wasn’t kind to us – it was very cold when we went through Melbourne and, in

Tasmania, it was rainy, cold and miserable. “The ride into Lake Eyre was terrible, with 60 kilometres of very rough dirt road in and out and then we had to continue via Alice Springs as the road was closed at Birdsville due to flooding. “The bike started to struggle – it has done about 51,000 kilometres now and is only a little Honda 125; I bought it specifically for these charity rides.” This year’s Ride Around Australia for Disability was Mr Frogley’s third trip, with each event raising money for The MaiWel Group. news Brothers run for stroke survivors Three brothers from Cessnock lined up alongside hundreds of runners in Maitland at the weekend to raise money for a cause close to their hearts. Trey, Beau and Declan Hunter took part in the 10th anniversary of the Maitland River Run on Sunday as a show of support for Australia’s youngest stroke survivors. It is a very personal cause for the Hunter family after 11-year-old Trey suffered a lifethreatening stroke within 24 hours of being born. The brothers’ efforts provided vital funds for the Little Stroke Warriors, which partnered with Stroke Foundation to develop a resource specifically designed for families of paediatric stroke at the point of diagnosis. This ensures parents don’t leave hospital confused and anxious about the journey ahead. Trey’s mother, Candice, said, while his recovery had been challenging at times, he was doing well. “[He] is an extremely determined character,” she said. “I am thrilled they shared this experience and

raised funds for the event’s charity of choice, the Little Stroke Warriors, at the same time. “I have been involved with the [charity] for almost two years – not only does it connect and support young stroke survivors and their families around Australia, it raises awareness of paediatric stroke in the wider community.” Stroke attacks the brain – the human control centre. About 500 babies and children suffer from strokes in Australia each year and more than half of the children who survive have lifelong disabilities. Stroke Foundation acting chief executive, Toni Aslett, said many people were not aware stroke could strike at any age and even impacted babies in utero. “More research into paediatric stroke is needed to ensure there is no delay in diagnosis and children are given the best opportunity to recover and live well,” Ms Aslett said. “Trey is proof that, with targeted care and support, it is possible for young stroke survivors to thrive and achieve their goals.”

This year’s Maitland River Run included the usual mile course, as well as a four-kilometre, 8km, 12km and a new half marathon distance of 21.1km. More than 800 runners were expected to pound the pavement to help celebrate the scenic event’s milestone. - Ben Murphy

Generations come together A two-month project has bridged the gap between generations at Marks Point Public School. Pen Pal Power saw Year 5 and 6 students write to, and receive letters from, younger and older clients of local health care provider Hunter Nursing. Topics included love, safety and learning, participating, health and wellbeing, material basics, and communication. School principal Sharne Turpin said the benefit of the project went far beyond extending students’ literacy skills. “They have gained insights into the lives and histories of other people in a way they simply wouldn’t have done otherwise,” she said. “And the feedback from their pen pals and Hunter Nursing has been truly heart-warming: the

correspondence has given the clients a new outlet for their life experiences and a new interest in what’s important to today’s young people.” Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser was among the guests at a special celebration on Friday as students met their pen pals faceto-face for the first time. The event included a recap of the project, before participants were handed gifts and certificates. Ms Turpin said it had further developed a mutual understanding of the diversity of human needs and experiences. “It was a beautiful ceremony of humanity and making connections – young, old, able-bodied and disabled,” she said. “I think it really helped to foster that understanding of other people’s circumstances.

“Some of the pen pals don’t have the mobility or access that [our] students have, so they’re loving learning about what they are able to do. “There was a 96-year-old client who spoke about how she used to pluck chickens and had no running water or electricity where she grew up – it was an amazing tale, and the kids shared some of

them throughout the project. “I recommend that any school participate in this; what the students, staff and clients got out of it is absolutely priceless.” The Intergenerational Wellbeing Project was a partnership between Hunter Nursing and the University of Newcastle. - Ben Murphy

Above, Aimee Fisher at the Fearnley Dawes Athletics Club, and, right, at gymnastics.

Fisher pushes to new heights Powered by a sense of quiet determination, 17-year-old Thornton para-athlete Aimee Fisher this week returned from her international debut in Switzerland. Fisher competed in the World Para-athletics Grand Prix, Daniela Jutzeler Memorial and Swiss Nationals, bringing home third place in the women’s 200m T54 in the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial.

At every turn she faced fierce competition, none more so than from Australian Paralympian Eliza AultConnell, who set the Australian 100m record of 16.44 seconds at Wheelchair Sports NSW’s Summer Down Under Series in Canberra in January. Fisher was only a fraction behind her at 17.84 seconds, and repeated that pattern in Switzerland – only ever trailing her rival by a few seconds.

Fisher’s gaze is now set squarely on the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Not 18 months ago, she was an active gymnast and ballerina when she damaged her spinal cord in a freak accident. She fell flat on her back from 1.5 metres doing a simple bar change. “I just remember thinking, okay, I’ll get up now, and not being able to feel my legs,” Fisher told Newcastle Weekly. She was rushed to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital, where an MRI revealed she would never walk again. Following surgery to stabilise her spine, Fisher struggled to comprehend the gravity of the situation. “I said, ‘So, I can’t do athletics, can’t do gym, can’t dance, can’t drive a car or any of those things?’,” she said. “[The doctor] said yes, you can Aimee, just in a different way.” Six weeks to the day after her accident, Fisher was climbing into a racing chair at Kensington. “My mind was set on wheelchair racing,” she said. When she returned home after

rehab in March last year, she threw herself into training with coach Andrew Dawes at the Fearnley Dawes Athletics Club, and it wasn’t long before she was smashing personal bests in 100m, 200m and 400m events. In April, she was the only paraathlete from the Hunter to receive an inaugural Kurt Fearnley Scholarship from Commonwealth Games Australia and the Carbine Club of NSW. She continues to train strength with her fellow gymnasts at Raymond Terrace PCYC and has her driver’s licence. - Georgia Osland

A place where family life can carry on.

In the midst of heartbreak and hardship, your support will help families stay close together. Family life is something we can all take for granted. There are so many nights when cooking dinner, negotiating homework or driving to and from activities can feel like a real chore.

For families who have to travel a long way to give their child the urgent medical care they need, Ronald McDonald House becomes a home where family life can carry on.

And yet, when a family has a sick or injured child in hospital, there’s nothing they wouldn’t give to be back home once more, living their everyday lives.

Your urgent donation can help family life carry on for sick or injured children and their families. That’s an extraordinary gift to give to families who knock on our doors. Thank you.

news Juniors’ busy race period Hunter District Cycling Club’s talented junior nursery is gearing up for a busy period as key events on the race calendar zoom into sight. Juniors have already competed at road tours in Canberra, Goulburn and Port Macquarie ahead of the Hunter Junior Tour at Kurri Kurri next month. Leading the charge is Noah Mason from East Maitland, Lambton cyclist Aiden Sinclair, and Bolton Point’s Owen Tooley. The trio will hope to gain a spot on the NSW team for the National Junior Road Championships at the Gold Coast in September. Noah has competed in the under15s this year. He is on track for medal-winning performances after claiming bronze in the under-13 time trial, as well as Criterium, events in 2018.

Amongst the under-17s age group is Aiden, the current NSW hill champion, and Owen, who has already gained points towards the state team after top six performances at Canberra and Goulburn. Warners Bay’s Josh Pajtl has joined them in the division. The 15-year-old notably won his category at the 2019 Australian Interschool mountain bike event in Thredbo in March. Meanwhile, Cameron Park’s Caitlin Rose is getting stronger and more confident with each race and hopes to improve on her eighth place finishes at the under-13 road races in Goulburn. Fellow club members Thomas Green, 11, Hayley Dell and Jake Pajtl, 12, and 13-year-old Gabrielle Lopez will also compete amongst the state’s best and use the races

for experience before going into the under-15 ranks next year. Anderson Dell, Jackson Yowe and Zach Rowland will race in the under-11 age group. Hunter District Cycling Club hosts training for juniors at the Newcastle Velodrome, Chatham Street, Adamstown, every Thursday night at 6pm during winter. Each week, children practice

races such as time trial, madison, and team pursuit. The club has more than 300 registered members and a yearround race calendar. Winter road racing is on Saturday afternoons at the Hunter Economic Zone, Kurri Kurri. Email secretary@hunterdistrict. com or visit hunterdistrict.com for more information.

Simon’s World Cup debut Gema Simon says she “started to appreciate football more” as the Newcastle Jets defender prepares for her debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Simon missed a chunk of the 2017/18 W-League season after undergoing surgery on her left knee. The injury kept her out of action for more than three months and there was a chance she would not play again. However, Simon bounced back to gain selection in the Matildas’ 23-player squad for the World Cup in France, which officially kicks off tomorrow (Friday 7 June). While her selection came as “a bit of a surprise”, she was quick to acknowledge the role of her support network. “I’ve had some bad luck with injuries… if I go back a year ago, I didn’t really think I’d be playing

again to be honest,” Simon said. “I suppose it paid off – all the hard work I have put in and the commitment to football over my career. “I’ve got a good group behind me and my family’s always been really supportive, they’ve always believed in me. “I think I’ve just kind of started to appreciate football more and enjoy it for what it is.” Simon, who has made 11 appearances for the Matildas so far, joins experienced Newcastle teammate Emily van Egmond at the World Cup. The Matildas are in Group C, alongside powerhouses Brazil, as well as Italy and Jamaica. Australia starts its campaign against the Italians on Sunday 9 June in Valenciennes. Kick-off is 9pm AEST.

The other two pool matches, against Brazil and Jamaica, will be played on Friday 14 June and Wednesday 19 June.

The Newcastle Northstars overcame a fiery Sydney Bears outfit to snatch a 3-2 win at Macquarie Ice Rink on Sunday afternoon. Much like when the two sides met earlier in the season, the Bears came out strong and led for most of the game. Sydney scored with less than a minute gone and were up 1-0 after the first period. However, the Northstars hit back in the second stanza through a goal from import Francis Drolet. The home side responded late in the period to pull ahead 2-1, only for Drolet to drag Newcastle level once again. Northstars’ Liam Manwarring then put the visitors ahead for the first time and it proved to be the match-winner. The victory was Newcastle’s 10th in 11 games.

Moana makes Disney debut Moana will star in Disney on Ice for the first time in the 2019 iteration, Disney on Ice celebrates Mickey and Friends. The Polynesian princess’ highly-anticipated arrival coincides with the tour’s celebration of 90 years of Mickey Mouse, which honours Walt Disney’s legacy by bringing acclaimed stories to life on the ice. Families can sail away on a high-seas adventure with Moana and demigod, Maui, as she finds the courage to save her island. Bumper season for Humpbacks A record number of Humpbacks are set to pass through Newcastle this year. The annual whale watching season officially launched at the weekend. From late May through to early November, Newcastle’s stunning coastline comes alive with the annual migration of thousands of majestic Humpback whales. The whales are making their way from feeding grounds in the icy Antarctic Southern Ocean to the warmer waters off northern

Queensland. NOVA Cruises general manager, Peter Hanrahan, said it would be a bumper season, with the highest recorded number of Humpbacks since whaling ceased on the East Coast in 1962 and nationally in 1979. “Back then it was estimated there was only 200 to 500 Humpbacks left in the East Coast population,” he said. “This year we are anticipating over 33,000 Humpback whales to pass the Hunter coastline.

“We are slowly making our way back to predicted numbers of 36,000 to 40,000 Humpbacks, which used to migrate pre-whaling days.” Apart from whales, seals, sea birds, sharks and more can be seen from the city’s shores. The 2019 whale watching season operates from 1 June to 30 October. Whales can be sighted on their northern migration from June to August, and again on the southern migration during September and October.

Twilight Musical Dialogues is back with Musical Kin – a fun twist on classical dynasties. The world’s most famous musical dynasties often had lesser-known family members; names like Bach, Schumann, Mozart and Mendelssohn are widely known, but have you ever heard of their relatives, Wilhelm Friedrich Bach, Clara Schumann, Maria Anna Mozart or Fanny Mendelssohn? Twilight Musical Dialogues artistic director Sally Walker (pictured) brings their music to light with a captivating concert on Friday 21 June at Adamstown Uniting Church, starring Walker herself, Ami Williamson, Clemens Leske and featured young artist Naomi Blanch. Tickets are $50 each. Go to twilightmusicaldialogues.com for more information or book online at trybooking.com/BBKVG

Now showing Aladdin (PG) During a sea voyage, a mariner (Will Smith) tells a story to his children. Flash over to Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) as she goes incognito in the streets of the desert kingdom of Agrabah. Soon running into trouble, a young street urchin, Aladdin (Mena Massoud) saves the day and is quickly smitten with the beautiful, alleged handmaiden! Not just content with buying up the childhoods of those born around the 1980s, Disney continues its campaign of remaking its own movies, which started with 2015’s Cinderella and continued with 2016’s The Jungle Book and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast. This latest effort, whilst earnest, continues the weaknesses found in Beast; although a live-action adaptation, the animated counterparts come across more lively. The sets by production designer

Gemma Jackson (Game of Thrones) are clean and sterile, giving away that they are on a sound-stage rather than a desert kingdom. Like a stilted pantomime, our leads start slightly wooden, but loosen up throughout. The introduction of Smith’s CG genie may have helped this somewhat as the character is expectedly played with the intensive kinetic energy that Robin Williams gave to the part back in 1992. Marwan Kenzari’s (Murder on the Orient Express) Jafar is a shadow compared to his towering, sinister and hammy animated counterpart. Subtlety against the giant blue genie is misguided. Verdict: Despite surprisingly restrained performances, the songs, costumes, dance numbers and inherent charm of the story raises a smile and a shimmy. 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Wildlife tribute in Morpeth A Wildlife Art Show at Morpeth Gallery over the long weekend (Saturday 8 to Monday 10 June) will feature Australian geckos, both as subjects of paintings and as living specimens. Off the back of World Environment Day yesterday (Wednesday 5 June), paintings of geckos, birds, animals, fish, insects and reptiles will feature in this annual tribute to native wildlife. As a special treat, gecko expert

Rick Worthy will be at the gallery to answer your questions. Mr Worthy has bred geckos for many years and, over the past six, he has bred the rarest gecko in the world – a purple dotted gecko. It takes two-and-a-half years for this gecko to develop its unique colouring. Some of Mr Worthy’s geckos, commonly sighted in the tropical regions of Australia, will be on display during the exhibition.

Hardie Grant, $50

This delightful book is a photographic record of the last wild elephants in Africa. In 2016, the Great Elephant Census found that there are fewer than 450,000 elephants in Africa and that they are declining at an alarming rate. This book is a backup to the census and provides disturbing evidence of the decline. Through the eyes of over 40 experts, including researchers and park rangers, it tells the stories of the continent’s elephants and the dangers they face. The photographs were selected from the world’s best wildlife photographers and are simply stunning. There is also a passionate foreword by Prince William. Highly recommended.

The Full Catastrophe by Rebecca Huntley and Sarah Macdonald Hardie Grant, $32.99

If you are feeling depressed about life and the state of Australia, this book could be the perfect cure. Rebecca Huntley and Sarah Macdonald have collected 32 stories from well-known Australians about those times when life is so bad, it is funny. From tales about disastrous trips to career stuff-ups to travelling through airport security with a roast chicken in your hand luggage, these stories will have you laughing out loud. There are many good reminiscences from the likes of Annabel Crabb, Wendy Harmer and Bernard Salt, but the weirdest and funniest stories come from Kirstie Clements’ reflections on her time as the editor of Vogue.

This fascinating book reflects on the rise of the #MeToo movement. In October 2017, #MeToo went viral following the claims against Harvey Weinstein and other celebrities, and quickly spread to Australia. In this collection, 35 contributors share their stories and analysis of the movement in the Australian context. They tell of personal experiences and reflect on local controversies, including the Geoffrey Rush case, and the rise of counter movements such as #NotAllMen. You may not agree with all the viewpoints in the book, but it is an important first look at one of the most significant movements of recent years.

Art Systems Wickham is celebrating its 10th year of business in 2019. The gallery has, to date, held 170 exhibitions showcasing more than 600 talented local Newcastle and Hunter Valley artists. Its annual You’ll Fest Christmas exhibition regularly brings together 40-plus artists to exhibit and sell their work during the festive period. The gallery comes alive with a variety of painting, sculpture, ceramic printmaking, and mixed media work. Gallery director and owner, Colin Lawson, says, “I am indebted to all my artist colleagues who have supported the gallery and have been a part of the gallery’s regular artist stable. Some have been with me since the early days and return to exhibit new work every second year or so.”

The gallery has also introduced many new names to the public. Lawson says, “I am often approached by new artists and am always looking for new talent.” Memorable shows of note over the years, to name a few, have been by Francis ‘Frank’ Celtlan, Michael Bell, Kerrie Coles, John Turier, Brett McMahon, Peter Lankas, Susan Ryman and Peter Speight. The current exhibition, titled Landscape Metaphors, is by Vlasé and Judi Nikoleski and continues until 4pm on Sunday 9 June. The exhibition showcases sculpture by Vlasé and textiles by Judi. Palace fit for a pooch The cold weather can be especially taxing on pets, making this pooch palace, courtesy of Dulux, the perfect long weekend DIY project.

Designing and implementing a pet space, complete with kennel, bedding and bowls should not be an eyesore hidden in the corner of the backyard, according to Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr.

the label on the can for more information.

“Structures like kennels and dog beds can often seem clunky and out of place in your backyard but selecting a soft and subtle [colour] scheme can actually add visual interest to your exterior’s aesthetic,” Lucena-Orr says.

4. Apply paint to the surface using short, horizontal brush strokes.

1. Gather your painting supplies – Dulux Weathershield in your chosen colour(s), drop sheet, high quality synthetic brush for cutting in, medium nap (1018mm) roller, roller tray, 400 grit sandpaper, painter’s tape and old cloths. 2. Ensure the surface has been properly prepared prior to starting to paint. Follow

3. Start painting by cutting in around the edges and hard to reach areas using Dulux Weathershield.

5. Whilst the paint is still wet, smooth over the painted section with long brush strokes. Do not release the brush when you do this. Don’t brush it too much – a few strokes should be enough to smooth the surface. 6. Repeat this process until complete. Allow to dry, then give the surface a light sand with 400 grit sandpaper and repeat steps 5 and 6 for a second coat. As a tip, for the best finish, allow a minimum of 2 hours drying time between each coat.

in the garden

All the colours of the cymbidium rainbow

This time each year on the gardening calendar, I visit a growing nursery where my favourite winter plants are grown en masse. I love Cymbidium Orchids; their amazing colours, long, strappy green leaves and the long spires of flower spikes shooting above the green growth. I wander through the thousands of cymbidiums being grown, wishing I could take one of each colour home. The beauty of this orchid is its longevity and its exceptional

performance inside during winter, although after it fi nishes blooming, it will need a sheltered spot outside on a patio or even to be planted in the garden in a shady position. In fact, my father-in-law grew his orchids outside in Mayfield, where they were probably subjected at that time to the fallout from BHP and other industries. It shows how tough they are. The Maitland and Newcastle orchid societies are most obliging with their help with repotting and cultivation. Soon they will be having orchid shows; keep an eye out as they are most informative. Until then, my advice is when the pot fi lls with bulbs, to repot into a larger container. This way, they will produce more blooms next year. A more technical tip is to increase stocks by division. This involves selecting a plant that has outgrown its pot, splitting the

rhizome so that each part retains at least three healthy pseudobulbs, cutting out any dead roots and potting up with the oldest bulb against the rim. See an orchid grower for assistance. The orchid family is huge – I once had a Stanhopea, given to me by a kind customer. This amazing orchid needs to be grown in a hanging basket using a fi brous liner, as the flowers emerge from the bottom of

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

the plant. The perfume is amazing. Phalaenopsis Orchids have become popular, imported and sold cheaply in chain stores. They are also lovely but need a well-lit spot inside.

THIS WEEK • Lightly prune hedges before it gets any colder. • Start disbudding Japonica camellias, which will begin to bloom towards the end of winter. This merely means removing one or two buds where there are large clusters, leaving a couple to open. • Time to cut back on watering houseplants, especially fig varieties such as Benjamina and Ficus lyrata. The exceptions are ferns, which may require more moisture in heated rooms.

PICK OF THE WEEK Argo

I, Robot

Friday, GEM, 8.40pm, M (2012) Ben Affleck (pictured) directs and stars in this political thriller set in Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. When the US embassy is invaded, six staffers manage to sneak out and take refuge with the Canadian ambassador (Victor Garber). CIA extractor Tony Mendez (Affleck) is sent to rescue them, concocting a rather awkward plan of posing as a movie producer who is scouting locations with his crew, to be “played” by the rescuees. It seems a bit far-fetched but, here’s the brilliant part, it’s actually a true story.

Friday

Saturday, PRIME7, 9.10pm, M (2004) Will Smith (pictured) plays robot-hating Chicago cop Del Spooner in this thriller set in 2035, directed by Australian Alex Proyas. When the inventor (James Cromwell) of the robots that dominate the city is found dead (allegedly suicide), Spooner is put on the case. He believes rogue machines might be to blame and calls on robotics whiz Bridget Moynahan to help him find out. Smith is at his wisecracking best and the flashy production design and effects round off a thriller with more brains than you might expect.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Sunday, 7MATE, 8.50pm, M (2011) Before we were introduced to the celebration of Marvel characters that was The Avengers, Joe Johnston (Jumanji) gave us the back-story of World War II-era Captain America. As a 90-pound weakling rejected by the army, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, pictured) nonetheless impresses enough with his persistence to be chosen for an experiment that transforms him into a super-soldier.

The year ahead is a good time for Peter to realign himself with his most important relationships, his family and his domestic life generally and to work on improving his character and his mindset. He will have to do his best to stay on an even keel so his emotions don’t get the better of him. If he lets his feelings run wild and makes plans and decisions impulsively, based on his mood, he could regret it.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

Take care not to be robbed or swindled during the next fortnight. Guard your wallet, purse, bag, pocketbook or anything else that contains money, credit cards or other easily portable form of funds. If you have a petty cash box, lock it and keep it out of sight.

You seem keen to maintain a low profile at the moment and you are right to do so. It also seems a good idea to keep any details of your current financial position to yourself. Guard your tongue because it’s too easy to let your eloquence run away with you.

You may find it hard to concentrate on your usual chores because other things seem to be intruding on your mind. While it might be nice just to sit and dream or gaze out the window for an hour or so, chances are you’ll be too busy with work.

Though you have the promise of high achievement coming up, it’s important that you don’t overload your schedule or take on more than you can comfortably cope with. While it’s very tempting to push hard now, watch out for the law of diminishing returns.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG You can be sure that friends and acquaintances are going to have a powerful influence on your prospects. The moon’s harmonious angle to your own sign gives optimism and vitality to your outgoing nature. Social life will increase in importance over the next month. You’ll be popular and highly sought-after.

The moon has moved into one of the most sensitive areas of your chart. Turn your heightened perceptions to your love life, important partnerships and any affair that deals with investment, insurance, tax or shared resources. An intelligent approach now will save you problems later.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Tempers are likely to run high this week. Retrograde Jupiter squaring Neptune makes you very defensive and likely to overreact to any criticism of your work, whether it’s intended or not! You’re also inclined to dramatise everything and cast yourself as the wounded hero. Pull yourself together.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

The planets bring a lifting of your spirits and a gaining of confidence all around. You may see more of your family than usual and there should be some socialising and partying to enjoy. Why not give yourself a birthday treat with a musical experience.

The moon moved decisively into your horoscope area of ambition on 3 June bringing in a month when your worldly progress will achieve absolute priority. You need to feel that what you are doing is worthwhile and has more meaning than simply paying the bills.

The moon shines on the area of your chart devoted to relationships. If things have been difficult in a personal or business partnership, this is your chance to put everything back into its proper place. Your significant other deserves respect and affection, which you’re happy to give.

A good chat with a relative could open up possibilities and reveal old secrets during the next few weeks. The Sun meets Saturn and Pluto in your solar house of heritage and family issues so you’ll take great pleasure in the company of those who are close to you.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

You may have some kind of inspired idea which helps you to find an easy way through an awkward problem. A friend may help out at work or home and, additionally, any help you give others will be greatly appreciated. Be sure to take time out for yourself.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES We had a cottage growing up and my parents are very active, therefore we would always do lots of activities outdoors, either in the snow or on the ice during the winter, or in the water and in the forest. Fresh air is really something I value for my mental health.

My favourite things

SPORTS

ICE HOCKEY

Board sports I like a lot too, skateboard, snowboard, wakeboard... surfing I like but I just started so I need lots more practice.

Photo Miki Holmes’

Can hockey be one of my favourite things, because I kind of like it (well, we would be worried if he didn’t!)

FOOD I used to be pretty picky when it came to food when I was young, but I think now I’m trying to catch up from those days by trying lots of new things. When travelling, I really enjoy trying the local food and tasting different flavours.

Francis Drolet NEWCASTLE NORTHSTARS

Francis Drolet is the Northstars’ second-leading point scorer, accruing a massive 24 points in 11 games with 11 goals and 13 assists. Drolet is proving to be a force to be reckoned with on the ice, alongside fellow import Sammy Banga, as the Newcastle Northstars continues its winning streak. After claiming the second division league in France in April with the Briancon Red Devils, Drolet was excited for the chance to move to Australia and take a shot at winning another title. Come and watch Francis Drolet take to the ice as a Newcastle Northstar at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. You can find all game details and ticket information on the Northstars Facebook page. 62

TRAVEL I got the itch of travelling right after I finished my university degree. Exploring new places and different cultures is one of my passions for sure. That’s one reason why I’m on the opposite side of the globe right now.
