This week... From the editor I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend. As Murphy's Law would have it, my household was struck with the common cold, leaving us unable to enjoy the unusually nice weather on Sunday and Monday. Still, it was nice to do nothing, even if it was by force. I'm excited to bring you this week's magazine, our Wedding Edition. I love a themed issue, and what better subject matter than love itself. We've covered all bases, from cocktails to serve at your engagement party or wedding (or any event, really) to cracking the dress code to a DIY floral bouquet. To help you further plan your upcoming nuptials, we've showcased some of the leading Hunter businesses in the industry in our Wedding Feature, from page 25. Perhaps my favourite part of assembling this week's edition, though, was reading the answers to a questionnarie we gave three soon-tobe-wed Hunter couples. I loved the nuances between them; how affection revealed itself differently in different people. We asked them, among other things, how they resolved an argument and what they thought was the secret to a long, happy marriage. You can read more on page 25. I hope this edition leaves you feeling all loved up, as it does me.

news Youth to shake up museum The 1989 earthquake in Newcastle shook the city and its perceptions of self. Newcastle Museum director Julie Baird points to the disaster’s impact both during and after it hit on 28 December. “The way that Newcastle looks – I can walk around and pick everything they put up in a hurry after the earthquake, that style of Newcastle architecture,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “For years, it rocked Newcastle on how they felt about things and you still find people who are traumatised and shocked.” In the year that marks the 30th anniversary of the disaster, the postearthquake generation is set to reflect on how the city changed and imagine what the future might be like. Tantrum Youth Arts and Sydneybased performance company, Branch
Nebula, will deliver The Shake Up at Newcastle Museum across the last two weekends of June. The free event will bring artists, teenagers and community members together through theatre, art, live music and more in a bid to unite Novocastrians of all ages to take pride in a shared resilience. Ms Baird says The Shake Up wants to help build the conversation around the earthquake within the younger generation. “It’s funny that people think it doesn’t affect them – in the past, they’ve forgotten,” she says. “We’ve always had earthquakes; we had a big one in the 1920s but everyone forgot. “So, when the 1989 one came and there was major damage, Newcastle was rated as 0 for earthquakes. “I think that is what I like about these post-earthquake kids doing this

news Program targets youth crime A new program is targeting youth crime and antisocial behaviour in Cardiff. Historically a hotspot, with a rate of 434.8 car thefts per 100,000 residents from April 2018 to March 2019 according to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, the Northern Lake Macquarie suburb has a new air of confidence thanks to a Community Activities Lake Macquarie (CALM) initiative. Through programs such as barefoot bowls, street art, and the whimsically-named BARRY (Bringing about Respect and Responsibility in Youth), the Cardiff Collaborative Community Project unifies community services, businesses, schools and individuals to provide young people with real options to thrive, keeping them off the streets and out of trouble. Glendale Technology High
School principal Anthony Angel said he had already noticed improved attendance among normally-disengaged students. “We love these types of programs that work closely with students around their individual needs,” he said. Students have the chance to gain a First Aid Certificate, White Card and prepare for employment whilst getting involved in fitness and social programs. The project has already proven successful, with one event – the CarDifference Youth Week – attracting 240 people to Wilkinson Park for a picnic, field games, live music and a popular Skate and Scooter competition. The Cardiff Community Festival in May drew more than 1,300 people, showcasing young, local talent through live music,

news From page 4 Participants can also test their earthquake knowledge on a live TV game show. Co-creative producer and Tantrum chief executive, Chris Dunstan, believes young people have been “really receptive” to learning lessons from the past. “To me, it’s providing context for younger generations and joining the dots,” he says. “A lot of them have memories of the Pasha Bulker storm [in 2007], they’ve seen Newcastle change a lot physically just in their lifetime, and they are active about big issues – whether it’s climate change or otherwise. “For Tantrum, we’re just exposing these young people to the museum, stories of the earthquake, and it’s really about their responses – what they find most pertinent.” One of the emerging artists, Phoebe Turnbull, will offer an audio
tour of the museum to explore the notion of community care in tough times. “Her question is: Why can’t we always care for each other like this, not just in disaster?” Mr Dunstan adds. The Shake Up will be presented on 22-23 and 29-30 June between 5.30pm to 8pm. It is a free event. Visit tantrum.org.au for more. - Ben Murphy

news Government buys back wetlands after long fight It might be slightly weathered, but a red banner has proudly served as a voice for one Port Stephens group over the past three years. The Mambo-Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group (MWWCG) finally removed its ‘Save Mambo Wetlands’ banner amid a special ceremony at the weekend after the state government decided to buy a six-hectare patch of prime koala habitat in Salamander Bay. The land, controversially sold to a developer for $250,000 in an online auction in 2016, reportedly cost the government $420,000 to buy back. During the ceremony on Sunday, MWWCG stated it wanted assurances from recently appointed planning minister Rob Stokes, who was also in the role three years ago, that it would not be put on the
market again. The group claimed Mr Stokes’ department ignored its own reports before the sale. These documents included hundreds of emails from the Port Stephens community imploring him not to sell; a submission from Port Stephens Council asking that Mambo not be sold; and a letter and petition from local MP Kate Washington requesting it be taken off the market. There was also a biodiversity report that noted the block of land contained endangered flora and fauna, including koalas. While MWWCG welcomed the government’s decision to buy back the land, secretary Kathy Brown said the fight was not over yet. “We are glad it happened, but we still need assurances that it won’t

happen again,” she said. “You have to wonder why the department missed all those red flags that were raised.” Mr Stokes said in a statement that the government’s purchase ensured the land was returned to the community for future generations to enjoy. “This site sits adjacent to the ecologically important Mambo Wetlands, which is treasured by the community and has a strong Aboriginal history and connection
for the local Maaiangal people,” he said. “This purchase will improve access to public open space for the community and visitors alike, while protecting an undisturbed coastal environment that is an important part of the area’s history.” Ms Brown said MWWCG was developing a video showcasing the wetlands’ uniqueness, while it would also support Port Stephens Council’s three-year plan for regeneration. - Ben Murphy

news Hundreds of light rail near misses prompt crackdown in February. Mr Moore says his message to motorists is to always be aware around the tracks. “As a driver, it would be my worst nightmare to be involved in a crash with a vehicle or a pedestrian,” he said. “We are being extremely cautious as we travel through intersections, but trams can’t stop quickly or easily and the close calls we’ve had are really concerning.” Mr Moore issued the reminder last week alongside Roads and Maritime Services’ (RMS) director for the Hunter, Anna Zycki, and NSW Police chief inspector, Amanda Calder. Ms Zycki said the RMS had installed signage to remind motorists of the trams’ presence in Newcastle’s CBD. Transport for NSW footage that shows just one of many “We’ve seen in excess of 200 near misses near misses on the Newcastle Light Rail. around Stewart Avenue, Steel Street and Worth Tram driver Corey Moore describes the number Place in the last few months as motorists travel of close calls on Newcastle’s light rail tracks as through red lights and almost collide with trams “really concerning”. that have right of way,” she said. of traffic signals and trams ahead at Stewart Avenue. “We will also be installing signs on Steel Street in coming weeks.” For chief inspector Calder, it was yet another reminder. A spate of dangerous incidents, which included a driver caught heading towards an oncoming tram, prompted police to issue a warning in March. Chief inspector Calder said police would crack down on the light rail locations. “We need drivers and all road users in Newcastle to be vigilant wherever trams are crossing with traffic and pedestrians,” she said. “NSW Police will be out monitoring driver behaviour around the sites over the coming weeks, but it’s important to remember police can be out in force, new signage can be put in, and traffic lights can be adjusted. “But, at the end of the day, drivers and other road users need to be aware of their surroundings and take care on and around the road.” - Ben Murphy

COMMITMENT TO RETIREES When the Oak Tree Group was founded over a decade ago, the motivation behind the brand was not to be the biggest, but rather the best in the field of independent senior living. The Group set up with a mandate to provide quality and affordable retirement living options which would offer an easier, maintenance free way of life for seniors, while still remaining within the financial reach of the average Australian home owner. They also realised a unique and under supplied opportunity in the market in regional towns, made this their focus, and charged forward on what they describe as being a busy, but deeply gratifying journey. Now, with 30 Retirement Villages spanning the east coast of Australia, Managing Director, Mark Bindon, shares their passion and commitment to continued improvement and growth. “Staying true to our intentions and what is important, but growing and learning along the way has put us in good stead,” he said. “All too often seniors are forced to relocate to bigger, metro cities to get the support they need because regional towns lack the infrastructure.
Start your retirement journey with Oak Tree Retirement Villages 18 Guest Street, Bunderra Estate Boolaroo Display Homes Open Monday to Thursday 10am – 2pm
“This not only breaks down a community, but puts unnecessary stress on the lives of our seniors who would rather stay in the places they love and know to be home,” said Mr Bindon. “We have built our reputation around being personable, approachable yet professional and focus our energies on the end product – our Villages and our residents’ comfort and happiness. “We pride ourselves on the fact that we invest our personal time at Village level – it is not uncommon to see myself or other Senior Management immersed in the activities at our Villages and this is quite unheard of in other organisations. “Being at Village level is the best way for us to learn, and improve our product and our service, taking on board every piece of resident feedback to continually be better at what we do. “It also helps us build up a comradery with our residents and reminds all of us, that we are real people, building real homes and communities, for real residents with real lifestyle benefits. We consider our residents an extension of our family. “Fourteen years later and we are still as committed and passionate as ever to give seniors the opportunity to enjoy an easier way of life throughout their retirement with the support they deserve.“

news The support group no one wants to join An estimated one in four women will have a miscarriage, and yet far fewer speak up about it. The Junction’s Remy Ellicott is one woman trying to change that by sharing her story to break the stigma surrounding pregnancy and infant loss. She and her partner Jack lost their first child when Remy was eight weeks’ pregnant. It took almost four painstaking weeks for Remy to pass the feotus naturally. She and Jack were sent home from the hospital with nothing more than a medical certificate to warrant Remy a few days off work. “I realised how little support was being offered to parents,” Remy said. “To the hospital staff, this was a regular procedure; to us, we were being sent home with nothing, not even a brochure of where we might turn to for support and information.” When Remy shared their story, she discovered many of her close friends and family had been through the same agony. “My grandmother told me she’d had three miscarriages in between her three boys, and she

said to me, “This is the first time I’ve spoken about it in 30 years”,” Remy said. “But once you put it out there, people are so willing to talk about it.” Hence, Baby in Time was born. Searching for support, Remy realised she could be the one leading the charge. Baby in Time would be a safe space for women, and their partners, to share their stories of love and loss. It was inspired by American psychologist Jessica Zucker who started the #ihadamiscarriage movement in the USA, encouraging people to open up about their grief, and told Remy personally she had the power to start something similar in Australia. Baby in Time’s online presence took off, particularly on Instagram, with droves of (mostly) women writing to Remy, whose stories will be shared on the website [babyintime.com.au] in the coming weeks. There is also a Facebook group and the offer of face-to-face support, with Remy partnering with Sands Australia to provide counselling services.

“I really want to get in front of midwives and nurses, too, to ask if they would be happy to refer parents [to Baby in Time and other support mechanisms] through a brochure,” Remy added. For another aspect of the project, Remy has joined forces with local businesses to offer tangible products to honour each child lost, such as the bean necklace, designed by Kate and Kole. Personally, Remy said uplifting stories had inspired her and Jack to try for their rainbow baby. “It’s become a place of hope, and that’s really all I could ask for,” she said. - Georgia Osland

news Program to lift veterans in need For veteran Rachel Kerrigan, lifting weights saved her amid a personal struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. “The only time my head is clear is when I’m under the bar,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. The Invictus athlete, who serves as Veteran Sport Australia’s engagement specialist, is heavily involved in a new, free program, which launches at Hunter Strength and Performance next week. The Veteran Strength Training Group was the brainchild of the gym’s owner, Leroy Scott – a veteran himself. It is open to all veterans and offers the chance to lift weights, train, learn and connect with other veterans in the region. Those with injuries, or who require adaptive lifting equipment, are encouraged to come along and see what they can do as well. “Sport is something that is common amongst all the forces – it doesn’t matter whether you are air force or army, sport is such a big part of your life,” Ms Kerrigan adds. “And then, when you leave the military, especially if you’ve got some sort of mental health

or physical issue, sport is not something you can usually get into. “Whereas with lifting, and being part of a gym, there are so many ways you can adapt.” Ms Kerrigan says Veteran Sport Australia has been established to support all veterans and their families to improve their health and wellbeing through sport and recreation. It aims to provide a central hub, helping to connect people with the right opportunity. She praised the role of people like Mr Scott for creating a space where veterans could come together. “There’s not a lot of people in the community that are willing to do something like this for the veterans – it’s really lacking,” Ms Kerrigan says. “So, if more people get behind it and more things like this started then there’d be more places for us to go to be able to connect.” The program will start on 19 June and take place every Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm at the gym, which is located at Beresford Avenue, Beresfield. - Ben Murphy

School kicks off Cup in style World Cup fever has firmly hit New Lambton South Public School. The playground was a sea of green and gold on Friday as students and staff celebrated the selection of learning support officer, Gema Simon, in the Matildas’ squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. The Newcastle Jets defender, who was an unused substitute during Australia’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Italy on Sunday, recorded a special
message to the students. Principal Andrew Pryce said the school community was thrilled that her hard work had paid off. “We are very supportive of Gema from a staff point of view,” he said. “She is an outstanding role model – to be a young Aboriginal woman and, I guess, pave the way and represent her country is testament to her work ethic. “We love having her for reasons
outside of football; probably the last thing Gema does here is go and have a kick with the kids. “Having a staff member, [who] the students know personally, with such an exceptional profile out of school is a wonderful motivator for them, so the least we could do was make it absolutely clear we’re right behind her and her teammates.” Australia’s second Group C match is against Brazil, which beat Jamaica 3-0 in its opening clash, on Friday 14 June (tomorrow). The Matildas then tackle the Jamaicans on Wednesday 19 June. Meanwhile, Dora Creek Public School will mark the tournament with its own Mini World Cup. Students are set to be divided into a dozen five-a-side teams, which will contest a round-robin competition at Douglass Street Oval. The event, marked down for Thursday 20 June, was postponed due to bad weather. - Ben Murphy
Knights head into Storm High-flying Newcastle heads to Melbourne this weekend on the hunt for a seventh win in a row. The Knights maintained their impressive streak with a 20-12 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Friday night. Hymel Hunt opened the scoring in the fourth minute, only for former Bronco James Roberts to respond shortly afterwards in his return to Souths. However, further tries to Mitch Barnett and Connor Watson put the Knights up 18-6 at the break. Newcastle half Mason Lino then booted a penalty kick in front of the posts to extend the lead, before a late Rabbitohs try to Sam Burgess rounded out the scoring. The Knights will tackle the Storm at AAMI Park on Saturday 15 June from 3pm.

Wedding feature
Wedding bells
While wedding season lies dormant in winter, now is the perfect time to plan your spring or autumn wedding with the help of Newcastle Weekly’s Wedding Feature. To get you into the spirit, we interviewed three engaged couples – two of whom are to be wed this winter! Photo: Keegan Cronin
Names: Lucy & Maree – ages 31 & 30 Date of wedding: March 2020 Location: Hunter Valley How did she propose? We were at an observatory in Tokyo at sunset. We were relaxing with drinks and I (L) decided it was the best time to propose. I got down on one knee and promptly burst into tears – like, proper ugly crying. M accepted.
Names: Gabby & Tim – ages 26 & 28 Date of wedding: 29 June 2019 Location: The Anchorage, Port Stephens How did he propose? He organised a private breakfast picnic on the headland at Byron Bay Lighthouse at sunrise. He had a secret photographer organised to capture the moment and it was the most perfect proposal. Who’s the most special person on your guestlist and why? There are too many special guests coming, we couldn’t possibly choose the most special. We have friends flying in from all over Australia and we both have very special family and friends. Having them all together under one roof will be the most special thing for us. What’s the one wedding gift you wouldn’t want to receive? That’s a tough one! We don’t even know what we would want to receive if we were having gifts. How do you resolve an argument? After we spend some time being angry at each other, we usually sit down and talk about it earnestly and honestly. Our communication is one of our strongest attributes. What do you think is the secret to a long, happy marriage? Working hard, trusting and supporting one another, having fun and being open to new adventures and experiences. Where do you see yourselves in 10 years? A couple of bubs and hopefully settled in our forever home near family and friends.
Who’s the most special person on your guestlist and why? L: I’m going to say my great aunty. She’s in her eighties and she was the last person I came out to about two years ago. I cherish her so much and I was afraid that she wouldn’t want to have a relationship with me anymore. But I was wrong. What’s the one wedding gift you wouldn’t want to receive? A kitchen appliance. How do you resolve an argument? We don’t argue so much as occasionally get snippy with each other. But the key is remembering that if your spouse is doing something that you don’t like, it’s not because they are trying to upset you. You just have to talk it out like adults. What do you think is the secret to a long, happy marriage? We are a team. Celebrating each other’s victories and building each other up when we fail is so important. Yes, we are individuals, but we are also Lucy and Maree: the couple. Plus, growing and changing together is important because no one stays the same. Where do you see yourselves in 10 years? Hopefully raising a family of dogs and ticking places off our travel list.
Names: Nathalie & Ben – ages 30 & 31 Date of wedding: 24 August 2019 Location: Margan Winery, Hunter Valley How did he propose? Ben proposed to me last winter during a hike up Mt Amos in Tasmania with wonderful views of Wineglass Bay. Who’s the most special person on your guestlist and why? N: I certainly couldn’t reduce it to one person. I would say our immediate families, whom we are both very close to. B: My parents, because they’re such an important part of my life. What’s the one wedding gift you wouldn’t want to receive? N: As cliché as it sounds, our guests’ presence is the greatest gift for us. Really, I love the idea of having everyone we love together to celebrate. We’ve requested only wishing well donations for gifts as we already have everything we need. We just need to pay our mortgage off! B: Unwanted household items. How do you resolve an argument? N: Just through talking it out. B: By talking or giving Nathalie food. What do you think is the secret to a long, happy marriage? N: Showing a genuine appreciation for each other every day and remembering that it’s the little acts of kindness and love you show each other that are much more valuable than grand, romantic gestures. B: Commitment to working things out together and making time for each other. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? N: Together with kids and a greyhound or two, living life to the fullest. B: With two kids travelling around Australia as a family. 25

Centre stage
on your big day As a bespoke wedding gown designer, Studio C Bridal's Caitlyn Elliott shares an important part of the bride-to-be's journey, helping them bring their dream wedding gown to life. Caitlyn is a graduate of the prestigious NIDA costume programme in Sydney. She interned in London and has worked for Opera Australia, as well as contracted to stage productions, including Strictly Ballroom and My Fair Lady. She likened the role to a “costume engineer, where she turned design sketches and illustrations into real garments for stage and screen. In the bridal industry, this means working with brides to help them imagine and design their perfect dress, then using her knowledge of pattern-making and sewing techniques as well as fabric and embellishments to create a dress that not only looks stunning, but fits and functions perfectly on their wedding day. She has a particular love for the elegant silhouettes, attention to detail, and
revolutionary fashion of 1930s, 40s and 50sgowns, but will weave her magic on anything, including reinventing heirloom gowns for brides wanting to wear a dress with particular family significance. But Caitlyn offers more than just superb dressmaking skills, meeting with brides multiple times during the dress-making process and providing genuine, friendly advice during the period of wedding planning. Studio C Bridal also offers trousseau, with an emphasis on garters and veils, some created from antique laces and tulles selected from a maker of tulle to the British Royal Family. Studio C Bridal is nestled in the bustling hub of Adamstown and offers a unique and personalised experience for the modern-day bride. Visits are by appointment.

Stars of Newcastle contestant Alfie Gil busts a move at Belmont ambulance station. Photo: Peter Stoop
Alfie steps up for worthy cause Alfie Gil has never done anything like this before. In fact, the last dance move he performed prior to this weekend’s Stars of Newcastle – Dance for Cancer was the worm, circa 1992. Despite his fear of embarrassment, the 47-yearold paramedic bravely signed up for Cancer Council NSW’s annual fundraiser. “I’ve decided to take part in an effort to give back as I live a very privileged life, of which I’m extremely grateful for,” Gil told Newcastle Weekly.
“I have known so many people through my personal and work life who have been affected by cancer, so I wanted to do my part to raise awareness and let those affected know that they’re not alone. “I also want to be a role model to my daughter.” The Stars of Newcastle – Dance for Cancer is a dance gala and fundraising event where local legends, everyday heroes, and influential members of the community team up with a professional
dance teacher. Each pair learn one dance to perform on event night and compete for the three awards up for grabs – Judges' Choice, People’s Choice, and Highest Fundraiser. Funds raised from the event support worldclass cancer research, prevention programs, advocacy, and support services. While yoga is a huge part of Gil’s life outside of work hours – he recently completed a course to teach in and around Newcastle – his self-confessed “lack of dance skills” has also seen him squeeze in practices twice a week for the past six weeks. “I hope to achieve personal growth by facing a fear of performing on stage,” he said. “Fundraising wise, I’ve bombarded Facebook, my colleagues and yogis every opportunity I get.” Gil added he was extremely humbled by the support he’d received, particularly the Ambulance Control Centre at Charlestown, Skyline Aviation, The Yoga Place at Blacksmiths and Yoga Body Works, as well as all the individuals who donated. The Stars of Newcastle – Dance for Cancer will take place at NEX on Saturday 15 June from 7pm. Visit the page everydayhero.com.au/event/ starsofnewcastle2019 if you’d like to donate to support Alfie or other contestants. - Ben Murphy

remains uplifting and empowering. The show follows four women dishing on food, diets, exercise, friendship, love and sex, set in Cook’s Women’s Gym. There’s Carla, who’s hitting the gym so she can eat more chocolate and ice cream, and Cheryl, who’s hoping to relieve stress from work. Crack that code White tie Director Greta Gerwig and actor Timothée Chalamet pose together on the 2018 Oscars red carpet, an event that calls for white tie attire.
The most formal and fancy of the dress codes, white tie calls for ultimate glam. Men are expected to wear tuxedos with white shirts with a white bow tie. For women, long gowns are called for, and the more glamorous the better. Think state dinners, royal affairs and the Oscars.
Cocktail Model and co-founder of Keep it Cleaner Laura Henshaw and fiancé Dalton Graham show us how cocktail is done at Oaks Day at Flemington Racecourse in 2018.
The most common wedding dress code, cocktail is a great way to have your guests dress up without calling for anything too fancy. Dresses at or above the knee are de rigueur for women, and you can be creative with colours, prints, patterns and accessories. Jumpsuits and two-piece sets can work well, too. Sorry, fellas – a suit is still called for here, but you can probably get away with no tie as long as you have a jacket.
NW is here to help you decipher that dress code and be the best looking guest at the wedding! Our top tip: it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Oh, and don’t wear jeans, ever!
Black tie The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (aka Harry and Meghan) were black tie perfection as they attended the Royal Variety Performance in London in November.
Usually reserved for weddings beginning late afternoon or evening, a black tie dress code calls for your slickest outfit. Men, think James Bond – black dinner suits and white shirts with a black bow-tie or tie should do the trick. Ladies, formal dinner dresses of any length are the order of the day.
Smart casual
The original The Bachelor couple, Tim Robards and Anna Heinrich rock smart casual at the David Jones SS17 Collections Launch.
For a daytime event, this is a sure-fire way to ensure your guests are comfortable while still looking presentable. For the women, sundresses, tea dresses, skirts, pants and jumpsuits are all fair game. Wedges and hats for outdoor weddings are also a nice touch. Boys – opt for suits with no jacket or no tie, but it’s a good idea to have one or the other.
the look
Formal
Canberra Raiders co-captain Jarrod Croker and Brittany Wicks arrive at the 2017 Dally M Awards, nailing the formal dress code.
If cocktail is too casual, and black tie is too much, formal (or black tie optional) is just right! For the gents, a suit with a tie is a must – it’s best to stick to darker colours. Ladies, you have a bit of freedom here – dresses can be long or cocktail length. Err on the side of caution and sway more to the black tie side of things if you’re unsure!
Casual
Rebecca Harding and Andy Lee attend the 2019 Portsea Polo, looking cute and casual.
For daytime weddings on the beach or in the garden, the word ‘casual’ is often bandied about on the invitation, much to the guests’ confusion. For a casual wedding, think summery dresses for the ladies with some wedges to match. Gents, you can (finally) ditch the suit for this one, and pair some chinos with a crisp white shirt or polo. No shorts, no thongs, no jeans (please).

Flower power
Photos Annabelle Hickson
DIY wedding bouquets are a popular choice for brides on a budget. We caught up with A Tree in the House author Annabelle Hickson for some tips.
our cover star A Tree in The House by Annabelle Hickson, published by Hardie Grant Books, hardback $49.99.
According to Hickson, there is “something so joyful about a bouquet made up of one type of flower. It feels, all at once, simple and abundant.” Hickson’s top tip is to pick or buy a generous amount of the same flowers, in the same or similar colours. To arrange, remove any lower leaves and gather the stems either in a jar or in a circle made by loosely gripping the fingers of your non-dominant hand around
an imaginary broom handle. The advantage of arranging the bunch in your hand is that you can easily play around with the composition of the flowers by raising and lowering each stem, without having to trim anything as you work. When you’ve finished, cut the stems with secateurs to make them level. When you’re happy, tie the bunch where you would naturally want to hold it. Check for any remaining low-hanging leaves and remove. Then cut the stems level, but not too short − you want them to reach the water when placed in a jar. Wrap with thick decorative ribbon. To wrap the flowers in tissue paper (as a gift to the mother-of-the-bride, for example), Hickson suggests: • Get two sheets of white paper and place them on the table. The sheets in the picture are 40cm x 55cm; because the hydrangeas were quite big, Hickson wanted the paper to be big too, so did not fold them. If you had sheets
any bigger, or alternatively an arrangement that was smaller, fold one sheet in half, off-centre, and then the other. Position the two folded sheets on a table so that they make an upside-down V, overlapping at the top, with the fold lines facing in. • Then get two pieces of tissue paper (the sheets used were 50cm x 75cm) and repeat the folding process, placing them on top of the white paper. Hickson’s preference is for 18gsm food grade tissue paper − a little stiffer than the stock standard stuff. • Place the bouquet on top of the paper, in the centre, with the stems sitting in the negative space of the upside-down V. Use the paper sheets to make a collar around the bunch of flowers, and then secure with ribbon or string at the base. Use a small bit of sticky tape to secure the two sheets together at the front and at the back. • Re-cut the stems and immediately place the bunch in a jar of water.

June represents little garden growth, but it is quite surprising the problems that do appear. Wet weather can cause moss to grow on pavers and driveways, while fungal problems may need attention. The best solution I have found for mossy, slippery areas is to apply Wet and Forget. I like it because it doesn’t seem to damage as many plants as some other products. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew, which attacks roses and hydrangea and can be treated
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
with copper oxychloride. This product can also be used on frangipani rust. Remember to clean up fallen leaves also. Clay can be a real problem with continuous winter rains. Dig over obvious clay areas, working in manure, compost and gypsum, then backfi ll with good soil. If you are time-poor, try using a liquid clay breaker, watered into the soil.
THIS WEEK • Roses will become available for planting. If the soil hasn’t been prepared, use a good planting mix, but don’t fertilise. • Deciduous trees will soon be available. Prepare soil with a good planting mix and manure several weeks before planting. • Spray deciduous fruit trees with copper oxychloride.

PICK OF THE WEEK Matilda
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Friday, 9GO!, 8pm, PG (1996) Mrs Doubtfire cutie Mara Wilson (pictured) is Matilda Wormwood, a spirited youngster with telekinetic powers who teaches her neglectful parents and sadistic principal (Pam Ferris) a lesson they’ll never forget. Luckily for Matilda, she’s got the kind Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) in her corner for support. Based on the Roald Dahl story, this cute, dark and smart tale fit for all-ages consumption stars and is directed by Danny DeVito.
Friday
Sunday, 7MATE, 8.40pm, M (2014) Many of us might be suffering from comic book fatigue, but this Marvel Studios undertaking is a solid contribution that offers a fresh slant. Bursting at the seams with its cavalcade of superheroes and well- known stars including Scarlett Johansson, Emily VanCamp, Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson and even Aussie Callan Mulvey, Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes on the pleasing guise of a political thriller. Chris Evans returns as do-gooder Steve Rogers, who finds himself frustrated by the secrecy of his superiors at SHIELD.
The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Saturday, 9GO!, 7pm, M (2001) From the opening scenes that masterfully detail the back story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s tale, to the seamlessly integrated special effects, director Peter Jackson presents a powerful and engrossing tale that never lets up on its frenetic pace. Managing to keep the heart of the novel, with only minor tailoring to trim the mammoth detail, Jackson presents a marvellous realisation of mythical Middle-earth. However, the real triumph lies in the casting: Elijah Wood is a revelation as the reluctant hero, hobbit Frodo, Ian McKellen revels in his role of the enigmatic wizard Gandalf, and Viggo Mortensen’s (pictured) consummate depiction of Aragorn/Strider, the noble king-in-waiting, consistently threatens to steal the show.

COMMUNITY OVER COMPETITION There are over 9,000 registered marriage celebrants in Australia, but neither of us have this, “kill or be killed” ethos around work. Everyone’s a little bit better, lifting up those around them. We’re both lucky to be part of an amazing nationwide group of celebrants called The Celebrant Society, and MK is a member of local group, Sassy Celebrants. Both are built on foundations of helping one another.
My favourite things
FAMILY
Monty King is a married father of two, while Monty Haron and his siblings are super close (especially his nephew Hugo, who he adores). Weddings are obviously traditionally weekend gigs, so it’s really important to make time for those we love most. Even if that means sometimes knocking back a job or two to do it.

The Two Montys
We both have pretty big personalities, and love the social aspect of our jobs, not only when performing a ceremony, but the friendships formed with like-minded professionals within the wedding industry. Locally, there are a few industry social groups that get together semi-regularly…. and we’re both pretty partial to a cleansing ale and a chat. Photo: YCM Photography
NEWCASTLE MARRIAGE CELEBRANTS
Monty King knows full well a wedding is one of the happiest days in a person’s life, having married more than 230 couples. Then he met Monty Haron – a Camp Quality volunteer of five years. In late 2018, the two registered marriage celebrants decided to join forces (because they are both named Monty, why wouldn’t they?) to curate and auction off a wedding package worth over $65,000, with every cent raised going to Camp Quality. Blown away by the support they received from the Newcastle and Hunter wedding community, they successfully auctioned off the package on Valentine’s Day this year, with $34,500 heading to the charity. The two Montys, along with their generous industry friends, will host the wedding of Emma and Brody at Stanley Park, Fullerton Cove, on 20 July. 54
CHALLENGING THE NORM Big believers in there really is no “one-sizefits-all” approach to weddings, we always aim to deliver kick-ass ceremonies that blow the standard expectations of what wedding ceremonies can be, out of the water. Photo: UnderATreehouse
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Originally the “2 Montys” plan was to just host a wedding together, because who wouldn’t want to get married by two lunatics named Monty? But we quickly realised it was a great opportunity to raise funds for some amazing organisations out there, who do some real good. We’ll be holding The 2 Montys Charity Wedding Event annually.
