thursday 27 june 2019
This week... From the editor Newcastle Weekly gained a new employee for a short time on Friday. He zealously sniffed the office, knocked over the in tray and tried to pinch a colleague's lunch. Yes, I finally caved and brought my now eight-month-old Beagle puppy, Wesley, to the office for Take Your Dog to Work Day (21 June). According to the RSPCA, a workplace visit from a pet dog can be a very positive experience for both workers and the dog. I know we all enjoyed it and so did Wesley, who loves being around people. Founded by Pet Sitters International, Take Your Dog to Work Day is designed to promote the benefits of pet ownership and encourage animal adoption. Although still very much a puppy with charming puppy behaviours, welcoming Wes into my home has made me a better, and certainly more tolerant, person. I now have a soft spot for Beagles and could easily adopt five more (well, maybe not that many!) Here he is, earning his keep. - Georgia Osland

news Push to protect valued land Once a popular recreational hub, Morisset Country Club lies abandoned. Fencing now surrounds the Dora Street site, where more than 50 years of operation as a golf, bowls and RSL service club came to an abrupt end in May. Landowner Drysdale Metals directed the club to vacate the premises when its lease expired on 15 August. However, due to the notice to quit the land, it would be obliged to refund all membership fees paid for 2020 and had already become insolvent. Despite the club’s closure, a petition, led by the Sunshine Progress Association, implores Lake Macquarie council to retain the private recreational zoning on the land. Drysdale Metals is yet to reveal plans for the site and the council has not received a rezoning application. Sunshine Progress Association president, John Quinlan, is used to such a fight though. In 2013, Drysdale Metals put forward a proposal to rezone the entire site to residential. Mr Quinlan, a keen golfer, raised the subject of

the original status of the golf course as a 99-year lease for recreational activities in 1962. He claimed that the lease was, at some point, converted to freehold and suggested the council should investigate the circumstances under which this change was made. Drysdale Metals’ application was unanimously rejected that December. “The council voted not to rezone the land in 2013 and we’re hoping they will do it again, bring it into focus again, and force it to go to the Land and Environment Court,” Mr Quinlan tells Newcastle Weekly. “The question on everyone’s mind is whether the terms of the original gift of land is reason enough in law to prevent it from being sold and used for another purpose. “Our understanding is that a gift of that sort can only be extinguished through an application to the Supreme Court.” According to Mr Quinlan, this does not appear to have occurred. He believed the Morisset Country Club was a valuable community asset, particularly with a

shortage of recreational land in the area. “It’s a recreational hub for the golf course, bowls, croquet, snooker,” he said. “The club was used for all kinds of things – there was also dancing, weddings, and the U3A ran a lot of their courses there, so it was a community meeting place.” Visit the Sunshine Progress Association’s Facebook page for more information and a link to the online petition. Hard copies are also available in commercial and retail outlets from Wyee to Dora Creek. - Ben Murphy
news Casey opens up on Taboo topic For Casey Dunstan, eating less gave her a “false sense of control”. After enduring a series of traumatic events, the Fletcher woman struggled with anorexia nervosa and extreme laxative abuse for about seven years. At her worst, she weighed just 26.9 kilograms before being admitted to hospital. “The turning point was when mum turned up at my home one day,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “Being thin, you’re always very cold and self-conscious; I hadn’t shown any part of my body from my ankles to my waist to anyone. “I didn’t know mum was coming and it was one of those really hot days, so I was just in my nightie. “When you’re 26.9 kilograms, there’s nothing of you and all she could see was my collar bone; just bones everywhere.
“It was a skeleton standing in front of her.” Casey’s weight was so low that she also suffered from poor circulation, which turned her skin a shade of purplish blue. She was admitted to hospital and started the long road to recovery, something she confessed to being “pushed into” at that moment. Eighteen months later, the now 27-year-old single mum is close to finishing a degree in law and social science. Casey believes there needs to be more awareness for people with anorexia. She added the mental illness was not only about retraining the body, but also the mind. “People see it as a vain thing and materialistic – it’s all about being skinny – but there’s so much more to it than that,” she says.
“I wasn’t happy when I was skinny, I didn’t look at myself and think I looked great. “We’re not just being selfish or vain; it’s hard to live every day when you’re aching and have no energy. “I also think my recovery took so long because you’re so scared of what will happen when you eat.” Casey argued treatment should stop focusing solely on weight, while she claimed recovery resources were hard to find in Australia. “Weight isn’t the only thing about being anorexic – people need to stop thinking that you’ve got to be at this certain weight before you are worthy of treatment,” she says. “There’s this ‘get the weight up, then she’ll be fine’ [attitude].” Casey will share her story on episode three of Channel 10’s show Taboo, which airs tonight (Thursday 27 June) at 8.40pm.

support through Embracing Birth. The name is as it sounds: Karen assumes a non-clinical, nurturing role to equip each expectant parent with the tools to succeed. “We get the mind working with the body, rather than against it,” she says. “That way, you can trust that your body knows what it’s doing.”
Based at Marmong Point, Karen teaches small group and private one-on-one antenatal classes in a tranquil setting at her home on the lake’s edge. Her hypnobirthing techniques focus on relaxation, breathing and affirmations. If a mother-to-be is particularly worried about an aspect of a
previous birth that perhaps overshadowed the experience, Karen offers birth debriefing, where she discusses the birth in detail to identify and address the matter. In her support role as doula, Karen joins mums and dads at home when labour has begun. When labour is fully
hydrated or giving massages. “All of this helps to optimise the birth,” Karen says. It is this passion and professionalism that has earned Karen many glowing reviews and a finalist crown in the 2018 Hunter
Local Business Awards for both Outstanding Business Person of the Year and Outstanding Health Improvement Services. To see for yourself, contact Embracing Birth today. Visit embracingbirth.net.au

news State budget keeps Hunter in planning stages The 2019-20 State Budget was a mixed bag for the Hunter, with most of the region’s big-ticket transport and infrastructure projects receiving nominal funding beyond the planning stages. Three-and-a-half million dollars was allocated to John Hunter Hospital’s Health and Innovation Precinct – less than 0.5% of the projected $780 million total cost. Hunter Business Chamber president Hennie du Plooy said that while it was a “modest portion” of the overall cost, it was important to see a commitment to getting the project under way. “This is a very significant project for our region, with a forecast completion date just seven years away,” Mr du Plooy said. It was the same for the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange, to which the government allocated $400,000 for further planning, and improvements to Hillsborough Road – described by Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison as a traffic choke point between Newcastle and Lake Macquarie – which received $2.7 million towards planning and
pre-construction. Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said, given the financial challenges the state government faced, he was pleased to see it honour its promises on some projects. “I’m among the many people who would have liked to have seen a significant commitment to the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange project, but the reality is that the business case review is still being undertaken,” he said. “I’d also like to have seen the Hillsborough Road improvements fast-tracked, but note the government has committed [funds] this year to get things moving.” Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery noted the absence of any construction funds for the final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass. The business chamber agreed it would press the government to expedite this and Muswellbrook and Singleton bypasses to “construction stage” in future budgets. The chamber did express its disappointment at the “lack of significant funding” to advance
planning for the Lower Hunter freight rail bypass or corridor preservation, which it flagged as a key regional priority. In Port Stephens, $37 million was earmarked for the Nelson Bay Road duplication. This represented less than 15% of the project’s total cost. “[It] has been delayed yet again,” Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said. “Instead of the two-year completion date promised by the premier, it’s likely to take another seven or eight years.” Meanwhile, a notable $13.4 million was awarded to start work on a new, $25 million indoor sports stadium at Hillsborough, and a further $54 million will be spent on the construction of the new Maitland Hospital at Metford, bringing forward its completion date 12 months to June 2023. Another $1.4 million has been set aside for the planning and design of new access and intersection upgrades near Maitland, including traffic lights and safety improvements at Government Road and Raymond Terrace Road.

Eleven community organisations will benefit from the proceeds of this year’s Tocal Field Days. Event manager Wendy Franklin bestowed a record $40,000 in grants to those who helped stage the annual event, which went from 3 to 5 May at Tocal Agricultural Centre, during a morning tea last week. “We couldn’t put on the event
without the support of the great people in these organisations,” Ms Franklin said. “We run a very tight ship when staging the event so we can maximise the amount of money we can give back to these local organisations to help local people.” A staggering 21,734 attendees helped contribute to the grants through ticket sales. The 2019 Tocal Field Days grant recipients are: Newcastle Men’s Shed, Vacy Public School, Maitland Rugby Club and Maitland Lions Club, Slow Food Hunter Valley, Paterson and Bolwarra Scouts, Maitland Community Care, East Maitland Kiwanis Club and Woodville School of the Arts, as well as Tocal Homestead. Paterson Public School also received $1,000. The school has been an exhibitor for decades.

news Lights, camera… Action? A local consortium has rallied to roll the cameras at Newcastle’s Tower Cinemas once more. Iconic Cinemas Proprietary Limited has lodged an expression of interest with Event Hospitality and Entertainment Limited to reopen the iconic King Street cinema, which was suddenly closed on 5 December 2018. Informed by several people with decades of experience in cinema operation, the consortium hopes to turn the lights back on by November 2019, restoring the cinema to its former glory as the only one in the CBD and a much-loved picture house. It plans to establish a community-based advisory committee to help with programming and content, and, subject to negotiation, progressively upgrade the facilities on offer in the coming years. Local businessman and director of Iconic Cinemas, Steven Pritchard, said that, should the consortium be successful in its negotiations, it intended to operate the site as an independent cinema. “The city needs a place where the community
14
can view a wide range of art house, classic and mainstream films,” Mr Pritchard said. “There are so many films that our community cannot view because we lack capacity, particularly in Newcastle’s changing and growing CBD. “We also look forward to complementing the cinema offering in the region and working across all levels of stakeholders and interested groups to deliver the best possible outcome for the site and the community. “The Tower Cinemas will again shine brightly and the ‘gift for Newcastle’ will again provide quality entertainment.” Originally built by The Greater Union Organisation – a subsidiary of Amalgamated Holdings Limited, now known as Event Hospitality and Entertainment Limited – to replace the Strand Theatre, Tower Cinemas was officially opened on 29 April 1976. Then chairman of Amalgamated Holdings Limited, Sir Norman Rydge, said the cinema was “a new gift for Newcastle, The Tower Cinemas… For you, from Greater Union.”
Cessnock’s local legend lauded Cessnock council has named Alison Davey as Freeman of the City. The award recognises an individual for outstanding achievement over his or her lifetime, which advances the community’s values. Mrs Davey has represented Cessnock’s interests through her work as a member of the chamber of commerce for more than 30 years. She is a founding member of the Cessnock Tidy Towns Committee, which saw the city win the 2018 NSW Tidy Town of the Year and the NSW Resource Recovery and Waste management category this year. Mrs Davey’s involvement with the Business Professional Women’s Association in the establishment of Cessnock’s Australia Day celebrations was fundamental in the creation of one of the city’s most popular events. She was also central in the creation of the Cessnock Family Support Service Group, as well as the healthy heartbeat program.

A new service will offer support for young people with moderate to severe drug and alcohol use in the Hunter Region. The headspace Newcastle Youth Alcohol and Other Drugs Service provides a range of psychological options for youth aged between 12 and 19. Some of these include online resources and support; counselling and interventions, delivered either face-to-face or over the phone; and aftercare support to focus on relapse prevention. It also offers care coordination to support and facilitate young people accessing services such as GPs, employment and housing services.
headspace Newcastle manager, Dr Stephen Hirneth, said the initiative would complement other vital programs already provided. “Drug and alcohol misuse is an issue facing many young Australians,” he said. “headspace Newcastle has a well-established track record in delivering quality mental health services to young people in our community and our new, tailored service will allow us to offer additional levels of support and interventions in this area of need. “If alcohol or other drugs are affecting you or a young person in your life in a negative way, it is important to know that you are not alone – there is support available here in Newcastle to help you improve your mental health and wellbeing and learn the skills to guide you to recovery and a better headspace.” Young people can access the service via the headspace Newcastle intake team or through their GP or other providers. Access to the services is free and a mental health treatment plan is not required. For more information about the service and eligibility, call 4929 4201.

news Puppets put smiles on dials A puppet named Kylie has cancer and loses her hair. It is just one of the side effects of treatment, which children have been taught through a state-wide tour. Camp Quality’s Primary School Education Program visited Hunter School of the Performing Arts last week to encourage kids to be supportive of a classmate who either had a mum, dad, brother or sister with cancer, or battled the illness themselves. It aims to reduce the likelihood of bullying, exclusion, confusion or anxiety, while the puppets explain that cancer is not contagious. The show rallied around 11-yearold Oli Novak. His mother, Courtney, said it provided information about cancer in a language that children could understand. “It goes through the side effects
that kids could find weird, like why their mate at school is suddenly wearing a beanie,” she said. “I thought it was very beneficial for Oli to be there and have all of his friends there, as well as other students at the school who might be experiencing cancer in a different way. “It was really beautiful for them to witness – the show helped to take away that element of shame and made it less taboo, which was nice.” Oli was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in February. Naturally, the news came as a shock to his family but, after undergoing three monthly cycles of chemotherapy, he is now in remission. “[Oli] found a lump in his upper groin, which was a shock because, apart from that, he was completely healthy, active, and growing,”

Courtney said. “[A few] weeks ago, we found out there is no longer cancer in his body – he is completely cancer-free.” Oli and his brother will visit a Camp Quality camp later this year, while his sister is also set to attend one next month. The camps, another aspect of the
charity’s work, are packed full of fun activities for families and kids of different ages across Australia. It builds life skills and strengthens the wellbeing of kids impacted by cancer, as well as their families. Visit campquality.org.au for more information on the charity. - Ben Murphy

news Rotary celebrates Gerry’s milestone Many people don’t work for 50 years, let alone serve as an active member of a volunteer organisation. Lake Macquarie man Gerry Wubbels has done just that. The Rotary Club of Belmont – a part of Rotary International – acknowledged his five decades of dedication this week. Mr Wubbels enjoyed two stints as president, the first in 1977-1978 and the second in 1994-1995, while he also took on the role of secretary, director, and completed various service portfolios, including club, community, youth, international and vocational. Outgoing Rotary District 9670 governor, Brian Coffey, presented him with a framed congratulatory letter from Rotary International president, Barry Rassin, at a dinner on Monday night. Mr Wubbels said he had always
admired the work of Rotarians. “I was doing my [mechanic] apprenticeship in Wallsend for many years before I came to Belmont,” Mr Wubbels said. “My boss there did a lot of Rotary work and, knowing their standing in the community, I really looked up to those people when they came in and out [of work].” Eventually, Mr Wubbels was introduced to Rotary by a man named Roy Hammond. He attended his first meeting in 1968, before deciding he wanted to join on 24 June 1969. On the exact date that marked the occasion, Mr Hammond, now aged in his mid-90s and living in Goulburn, made the journey by train to celebrate the special achievement. “Roy invited me into Rotary, which I was chuffed by – here I was,
just a mechanic, being asked to join,” Mr Wubbels said. “I thought, ‘I’m not like these fellas’ – they all had such reputations in the community.” Apart from his decades of service, Mr Wubbels also boasts a 100% attendance rate. “This hasn’t always been easy due to other commitments,” he said. “When I was overseas, I used to work out what town I was in and find a club to make up meetings. “It’s a real pleasure to go to Rotary – you meet so many different people from all walks of life.” Mr Wubbels has played a role both in and out of Rotary International. He joined several Probus clubs, hosted Rotary Youth Exchange Program students, supported the Polio Plus and Rotary Foundation, and assisted in a water project in

one-off column Staying afloat on high seas Seafarers are responsible for 95% of all goods and products that come into Australia, yet they are an “invisible workforce”, enduring tough and lonely conditions, writes Darrell Croker in light of the annual Day of the Seafarer (25 June). We’ve all seen the queue of vessels off the Newcastle coast and their lights at night on the horizon. But we probably never imagine that all those seafarers are longing to come ashore. Time is a killer for seafarers. They are on nine or 12-month contracts and many never touch land in that time. Mental health is a huge issue. The International Transport Federation (IFT) estimates suicide is 20-times more prevalent in the seafaring community than in land-based industries. The Port of Newcastle is the biggest exporter of coal in the world and 2,500 vessels enter and depart the harbour every year, which amounts to 40,000 seafarers.
It presents a huge opportunity to offer ministry. The Mission to Seafarers centre in harbourside Wickham is ably meeting the challenge with the Apostleship of the Sea, offering care for all nationalities visiting Newcastle port. “At least half of them coming to Newcastle avail themselves of the opportunity,” Reverend Garry Dodd, Anglican Senior Chaplain at the seafarers’ centre, says. “But that’s a conservative estimate.” The Hannell Street centre is an ecumenical service provided through the Anglican Church in concert with Stella Maris, with Port Chaplains offering practical, pastoral and spiritual support to seafarers. The mission also celebrates mass at the centre every week. Last year, Mission to Seafarers teams visited 51% of available vessels, “but it’s a false number”, Rev Dodd says. “How do you measure the value of that? You can go on board one vessel and have a five-hour conversation with the captain and hear his pain, heartache and despair, and offer encouragement… as opposed to going on 10 ships in five hours with
a cursory ‘Hi, how are you, here’s a gift’.” For seafarers permitted to disembark in Newcastle, the mission’s minibus takes them wherever they want to go, and volunteers help them change money or find medical needs. Importantly, they are brought to the centre for meals, and the mission gives away at least 100 a week. “We provide a quality service to these young seafarers, men and women,” Chaplain Richard Bergholcs says. “But the thing they really like to do is chill out at the centre and be in private contact with their families.” Often that contact is bittersweet. Nearly every week, there is a seafarer at the centre who has never seen their baby. “We have really fast, free Wi-Fi,” Rev Dodd says. “They are able to Skype home and see their babies, and there are tears everywhere. It is digital chaplaincy at its best.” Volunteers are the key, and the mission needs more of them. Phone 4961 5007 or email christine@ mtsnewcastle.org if you can assist.

Iffland creates platform for success A shift in mentality has fuelled Lake Macquarie athlete Rhiannan Iffland’s dominant start to the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Iffland, a three-time champion, set a new women’s record for a single season with four straight event wins in Portugal at the weekend.
When asked what, if anything, she had done differently to previous years, Iffland pointed to her mental approach. The 27-year-old said “good energy” was helping her handle the pressure to perform. “It was the same thing in Italy with the three

in a row,” she told Newcastle Weekly days before her latest triumph. “I have gone in with a different mental game this year. “What it really comes down to is I can’t change what another diver does. “If they do a good dive, then I’ve been able to turn that pressure into good energy.” Iffland, a former Belmont High School student, started out as a trampolinist before turning her attention to diving at the age of nine. After learning her craft at Lambton Pool as a child, she went on to become a professional diver until 2009. Iffland then worked on cruise ships, where she performed acrobatic shows, including three and 10-metre dives, amid trips throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean Sea. During this period, she was introduced to high diving and, slowly but surely, moved her way up, metre by metre, until she felt comfortable enough to try cliff diving. Iffland joined the professional circuit as a wildcard rookie in 2016 – a decision that brought instant success, with a first world title followed by two more. The sport of cliff diving provides a platform

for aesthetic action and dives of incredible complexity. Elite cliff divers can freefall from up to 27 metres and enter the water at speeds of about 85 kilometres an hour. They compete at some of the world’s most stunning locations, with this season kicking off in Palawan, Philippines, for the first time, before moving on to Dublin, Ireland, Polignano a Mare, Italy, and São Miguel, Portugal. The world series hits Beirut, Lebanon, in July, then Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and
wraps up at Bilbao, Spain, in September. Iffland admitted it was a desirable career. “A lot of divers dream of the lifestyle, the travel, the places,” she said. She believed cliff diving’s popularity and competitiveness had increased drastically over the past few years. So much so, there is growing momentum for it to make the jump to sport’s grandest stage. “Cliff diving has grown, especially for women,” Iffland said. “The level of diving is getting harder and the
women are performing the dives well. “We’re also noticing more exposure as the years go on and there is a push for the sport to make the 2024 Olympics [in Paris].” Iffland currently sits on 600 points in the women’s standings, ahead of Canada’s Lysanne Richard on 370, and Great Britain’s Jessica Macaulay on 360. The fifth event of the 2019 season will take place on 14 July. Go to cliffdiving.redbull.com for more information. - Ben Murphy

Russia-bound Fourteen young swimmers and track and field athletes who will represent Lake Macquarie at the International Children’s Games (ICG) in Ufa, Russia, have been guests of honour at a ceremony this week. The members of Team Lake Mac attended a reception hosted by Lake Macquarie mayor, Kay Fraser, before being introduced and presented with their team kits at the latest council meeting. The ICG is the biggest youth multi-sport event in the world and is sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee. Hunter Academy of Sport’s head of delegation, Karen Turner, said it offered a great experience for emerging athletes. “All of the competitors are aged between 12 and 15 so it is a rare opportunity for them to represent Australia and Lake Macquarie, as well as gain maturity as an athlete,” she said. “The athletes’ village is always a highlight for the kids when they get the chance to mix with competitors from all over the world.” The team of swimmers and track and field athletes will participate in the Games from 9 to 13 July.

Banga responded for the Northstars. A tight second stanza saw Jesse Gabrielle snatch the only goal, and he then grabbed another after the restart to make it 4-1. Tomas Landa reduced the deficit for Newcastle, but the Brave closed out the match through goals to Alex Tetreault and Wehebe Darge. It was the Northstars’ second defeat of the season – the other coming at the hands of Melbourne Mustangs back in May. Despite the loss, Newcastle responded strongly on Sunday. Pat Nadin opened the scoring, before Bert Malloy, Luke Simpson and Banga all slotted goals in the second period to build a 4-0 lead. Perth’s Keven Veilleux nabbed one back, only for Banga to grab his brace. Northstars’ Jaden Ryan made it six in the third period. Newcastle will play a Canada Day clash with Sydney Ice Dogs at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium this Saturday 29 June. The game is set to celebrate the Northstars’ Canadian roots, with general manager Garry Dore, as well as all four imports – Banga, Simpson, Francis Drolet and Trey Phillips – all hailing from the country. The clash will start at 5pm.

Matildas bow out of Cup Australia has been knocked out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 4-1 penalty shootout loss to Norway in the competition’s round of 16. The Matildas trailed 1-0 when Isabell Herlovsen produced a tidy finish in the 31st minute. An Elise Kellond-Knight corner in the 83rd minute drew Australia level and both sides failed to find a winner. Matildas centre back Alanna Kennedy was then sent off in extra-time, leaving Australia to hang on until the shootout. Captain Sam Kerr blasted her penalty high and wide and Emily Gielnik’s tame effort was saved as the Norwegians set up a quarter final clash with England. Australia’s World Cup squad for the 2019 tournament in France included Newcastle’s Emily van Egmond and Gema Simon. The final will be played on 8 July in Lyon.

Brace for race towards oldfashioned fun
The Hunter Soap Box Derby will hit Muswellbrook this weekend. Photo: Jess Dugan Photography
Have we lost a sense of good old-fashioned fun? Hunter Life Education thinks so, and they want to bring it back. Billy cart drivers will hurtle downhill at speeds of up to 35 kilometres an hour when the Hunter Soap Box Derby kicks into gear. On the back of a successful inaugural event last year, the action will take place again this Saturday 29 June at Carl Street, Muswellbrook, from 9am to 2pm. Hunter businesses, schools, community groups, families and groups of friends have been encouraged to build a billy cart and help raise funds for Hunter Life Education, which
empowers young people to lead safer and healthier lives through education. Hunter Life Education executive officer Sarah Gray said many people were looking for ways to engage with friends and family to foster stronger connections. “There aren’t too many opportunities for this in the Hunter – so we created one,” she said. “The Hunter Soap Box Derby is all about connecting through the cart building process, having fun racing it down the hill and, at the same time, raising funds for a great cause.” There will be several race categories, starting with juniors (drivers aged 7 to 15), seniors (16
and over), the BHP Mt Arthur Coal Emergency Services and Defence race, then a showdown between Hunter corporates and businesses. The event is also set to feature fun races, with one involving Healthy Harold – Life Education’s mascot – up against the Easter Bunny. Harold will be looking to redeem himself for his defeat in 2018. The Hunter Soap Box Derby also includes family-friendly food and entertainment at the pit lane precinct and finish line, located in the PCYC Muswellbrook carpark, as well as military and emergency services displays and market stalls. The Float Your Boat festival last year.
Festival of lights A spectacular parade of illuminated vessels will cruise the shoreline at Lake Macquarie for the annual Float Your Boat festival. Owners of boats big and small are set to cover their decks, masts and everything else above water with LED lights and shining sculptures. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the city was the perfect stage to host a unique and creative festival of lights. “Thousands of spectators lined the
shore of our beautiful lake last year to see boats in a rainbow of colour motor past or to join in the fun at our live sites,” Cr Fraser said. “This year, spectators can experience the magic of Float Your Boat in their own way, whether it be at one of the live sites at Warners Bay or Toronto, their own viewing location of choice along the foreshore or, for the first time, on a dinner cruise on the lake with Lake Macquarie Cruises.”
The first parade begins on Friday 28 June with a 5pm launch event at Marmong Point Marina, before the boats set sail at 6pm. From there, the flotilla will skirt the western edge of the lake, passing Toronto and Coal Point on its way to Wangi Wangi. A foreshore live site at Toronto will feature live music, food stalls, and entertainment from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. Newcastle Art Gallery, Laman Street, Cooks Hill
Following the inaugural event’s resounding success in 2018, the IGN Art Fair returns to Newcastle Art Gallery in July. This year, the fair will take place over two days from 5pm to 8pm on Friday 26 July and 10am to 3pm on Saturday 27 July. There will be live music and a pop-up bar on the Friday night as well as a free Art Cart for children and micro-talks with artists and

art collectors for adults on the Saturday. All art will be available to buy and take home on the day. Curated by Independent Galleries Newcastle, the affordable art fair is a collaborative effort between Gallery 139, the Creator Incubator, Back to Back Galleries, Timeless Textiles, Newcastle Art Space, Art Systems Wickham and CStudios. Organiser Ahn Wells,
director of Gallery 139, says the fair is a one-stop shop for all things art. “I think it’s really good to get all the galleries together to make it easier for people [to shop], but also for the galleries to catch up as we’re all in separate spaces,” she says. The IGN Art Fair is supported by a number of other community groups, including the Newcastle Printmakers Workshop, Hudson Street Hum and Make Space Newcastle. In a new addition this year, fairgoers can buy tickets at the event to a Newcastle Art Tour on Newcastle’s Famous Tram on Sunday 28 July, hosted by Wells. Entry to the fair is free. in the garden Nurseries have received winter stocks of bare-rooted deciduous trees and shrubs, but sadly, I have been informed by Flemings from Victoria that two of the most popular deciduous trees will no longer be available for sale in NSW. This has certainly come as a surprise as they are beautiful and fast-growing: Robinia ‘Frisia’, the golden form, and ‘Mopheads’. Though these trees will be missed in garden designs, Gleditsia ‘Sunburst’ is still available. It is a weeping, graceful tree that is golden in colour and it is heat and drought tolerant. One of my favourite varieties of deciduous trees is the Malus family, commonly known as Crab Apples. They are a small-growing tree, which bears beautiful spring blossoms, from white to shades of pink and burgundy.

Robinias ripen IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
THIS WEEK • Once roses and deciduous trees have become dormant, this is a safe time to move them. • Dissolve one tablespoon of sulphate of ammonia in approximately 4-5 litres of water and sprinkle it around parsley plants and watch them green. • I know it is tempting to prune roses but wait until July or even August in frosty areas.

PICK OF THE WEEK Scientology: Going Clear Friday, SBS VLND, 8.55pm, M (2015) Oozing intrigue, bizarre tales and a herd of celebrity believers, the Scientology religion is a fascinatingly easy target. Going Clear scooped multiple Emmy Awards, including Best Documentary. The Church of Scientology took a full-page ad in The New York Times condemning it before it even premiered. Featuring former Scientologists, a history of its founder L. Ron Hubbard (pictured) and an expose of abuse allegations, Going Clear is dark and riveting.

Spider-Man: Homecoming
Return Of The King Saturday, GO!, 7pm, M (2003) Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy gave movie fans one of the most thoroughly engrossing spectacles ever to have graced a cinema. Picking up from The Two Towers, The Return of the King sees the original Fellowship still fractured, with Frodo (Elijah Wood), Sam (Sean Astin) and duplicitous Gollum (pictured, Andy Serkis) making their way to Mount Doom. A magnificent conclusion to a cinematic saga that will probably never be topped.
Saturday, NBN, 9.10pm, M (2017) A marriage between Sony and Marvel Studios, Spider-Man: Homecoming marks the return of the lycra-clad superhero to the Marvel universe. Starring baby-faced Tom Holland (pictured) as the titular hero, we jump in after the events of Captain America: Civil War as Peter juggles schoolwork, friends and teenage issues while crafting his crime-fighting skills. Funny and lighthearted, Homecoming is a breezy, refreshing return to fun.

Margot will have a real yearning to mix with people from all walks of life and from other lands and learn about their cultures and culinary delights. This will all be part of her bold approach to life in the year ahead. In matters of love, the planets’ influence sees her prepared to make concessions to her partner and to look for common ground rather than differences. A spiritual or karmic relationship may capture her heart in the months ahead.
ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
As you have so many aces up your sleeve, it seems you don’t know which to play first. Trust your instincts to tell you all you need to know. So curb any tendency to show your hand too soon because it’s a case of winner takes all. One false move may cost you the game.
The sun is in a harmonious aspect with Saturn and so people who are important to you at home and work are sunny, optimistic and at their most helpful. This will not do any harm to your love life either. Singles: keep a high profile because anything can happen.
The planets are ushering in a fresh start in property and family matters. If there have been some difficult issues amongst your loved ones, there will soon be the opportunity to resolve these issues. This would be an ideal time to work on improving your cooking, baking and entertaining skills.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Much as you would like to be relaxing, your time is spoken for. You’re not the only person in the equation and your actions will affect those you love. The time is coming when you will be free to do as you please but now it’s time to get organised.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE A new framework is needed if domestic affairs are to be placed on a surer footing. Although you can’t be solely responsible for what happens next, you are the best person to be architect for this exciting development. Others trust your judgement as you instinctively know the best move to make.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG Be sure to show appreciation to those who have encouraged and supported you, as they need to know they haven’t been taken for granted. Be light-hearted but sincere and be quick about it! You’ll be placed in a position of prominence, so it may be time to make your feelings known.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT This is the ideal time for being a little more adventurous. It’s also a time which will be helpful to those studying a degree, particularly in the arts or multimedia, sports or sports medicine. If you’re struggling to fit in all your duties, it’s time to learn more about time management.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
a joint financial arrangement, they’d better think again.
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN Take all opportunities that come your way without too much cogitation or suspicion. You’re going to have plenty of confidence in coming weeks and your sunny disposition will increase your social activity. It’s likely that you’ll be occupying centre stage and can afford to ask for one or two favours.
You can turn your attention to even the most intricate of jobs in the knowledge that mistakes are most unlikely. Therefore, you should have more confidence and even luck if you’re attending any kind of interview, meeting or going on a short trip to do with work or business.
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
You’re much more adaptable, communicative and ready to accept new suggestions and your increased flexibility will be highly attractive to potential partners, so if you’re single, this could be an exciting time. If rivals think you will capitulate over
Friends and acquaintances are at their most obliging, so if you want to use them as a sounding board, you can be quite sure they’ll give an honest answer. If you’re thinking of joining forces with a friend on some kind of project, this should be an ideal time.
Even though you may be out of pocket or red in the face, this isn’t the time to settle old scores or confront those who have taken you for granted. Far better to show what a grown-up enlightened individual you are. Seek a peaceful settlement sooner rather than later.

Pirates come to Warners Bay Opera Hunter and Lake Macquarie council present a rollicking good show, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty, at Warners Bay Performing Arts Centre, 24 July to 4 August. The Pirate King is played by CONDA-winning Tristan Entwistle and Mathew Gallimore, with a stunning double cast including Sam Elmi and Brent Hanson as Frederic, and Tashana Hardy and Freya Meredith as Mabel. My favourite things BAKING Baking calms the mind, soothes the soul, and feeds the belly. I’m even receiving requests from our DARA friends for certain goodies!
HOOP AND POLE I get to defy gravity and fly. Not only am I physically stronger than I was 18 months ago, I now have greater body intelligence, balance, confidence, patience and mental clarity. It’s a wholebody workout without feeling like exercise.
Emily Vu Doan DARA VAN VOLUNTEER
Emily Vu Doan has been a volunteer with the Development and Relief Agency (DARA) Van in Maitland for more than six months. “When I first volunteered, I overthought things and stayed in the van because I didn’t know what to say,” she said. “Now I’m so busy talking, I sometimes need to be told to get back in the van to serve food.” For Emily, a highlight of her time spent volunteering is being remembered by the friends of DARA, who regularly visit for meals. She earned the nickname ‘the caramel slice girl’ by the friends when she first started volunteering due to her delicious cooking. Now she is known by name. DARA’s Van served 5,500 meals in 2018, with 3,600 of those meals prepared by students of St Francis Xavier Hamilton, St Paul’s Booragul, St Joseph’s Lochinvar, and Cardiff High School. 62
FAMILY They’re kooky, challenging, and drive me up the wall some days, but they’re also loving, supportive, buckets of fun, and always up for a costume party or re-enactments of the latest group pose trending on Instagram. I’m truly blessed to be able to call this crazy bunch my family.
DOUGHNUTS These fluffy rings of heaven are such a versatile, but underrated, food! You can have them as is, in place of burger buns, topped with ice cream or star of the ‘doughnut chomp’ challenge – the possibilities are endless! You can’t go wrong with an OG (original glaze).
THE GREAT OUTDOORS Growing up, I wasn’t the outdoorsy type but the more adventures I embark on, the more I now want to explore. It’s a great way to disconnect from the stresses of life, to just be present and appreciate.
