This week... From the editor I had one of those weekends that filled my cup right when I needed it. June was a busy and, at times, overwhelming month for me, so it was nice to finish on a high note by celebrating the love between two very deserving people at one of my best friend's weddings. It was a bittersweet moment as there was one special guest missing on the day – the bride's father. But as the clouds parted and a huge ray of sunshine beamed down just as she walked down the aisle, we all knew in that moment that he was there with us. An overnight getaway, Sunday morning lie-in and buffet breakfast – topped off by a clean house, fridge full of food and a tired puppy from his dogsitting adventures – meant I didn't mind waking up on Monday, because I could appreciate all the little things that made me smile over the weekend. It's not often these moments come around; sometimes we get so bogged down by the mundanity of everyday life that we can’t see the sun for the clouds. So, I hope you too had a "full cup" weekend, or maybe yours is still to come. This coming week is NAIDOC Week (7-14 July), while school holidays are a mere day away. We've covered activities to celebrate both in this week's edition. - Georgia Osland

news City welcomes new inductees Five of Maitland’s most successful individuals have been inducted into the city’s Hall of Fame. Broadcaster Gary Harley, athlete Melinda Thompson, flood historian Peter Bogan, prolific playwright Nicholas Enright and cricketer Colin Johnston were all recognised during the special event at Maitland Regional Art Gallery last week. Established in 2016, the Hall of Fame also boasts the likes of champion boxer Les Darcy; actress Ruth Cracknell, who starred on ABC’s hit sitcom Mother and Son; Arnott’s biscuit entrepreneur William Arnott; and other famous identities such as Milton ‘Mr Maitland’ Morris. “It’s important that we recognise success and acknowledge the unique nature of the Maitland area and the individuals who were brought up or lived here,” Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said prior to the third
induction ceremony. “Many of our inductees have lived their whole life in Maitland and we celebrate their place in the rich fabric of this community.” One of the new inductees, Mr Harley, has promoted Maitland through his broadcasts on rugby league, as well as greyhound and horse racing, while he is also a member of the Newcastle and Hunter Racing Hall of Fame. Inspirational sportswoman Melinda Thompson has won titles in athletics at regional, state, national and international level. She entered the Guinness World Records as the winner of the first professional women’s foot race over 100 metres in Australia. The three other inductees were recognised posthumously. Mr Bogan (1936-2018) highlighted and preserved the city’s flood history.

He was acknowledged by the State Emergency Service (SES) on the 60th anniversary of the 1955 flood for his in-depth and detailed knowledge of the event. As one of Australia’s most important and prolific playwrights, Mr Enright (1950-2003) achieved national and international success. His many accolades included an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay, the 1998 Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award, and a posthumous Member of the
Order (AM). Known as ‘Mr Maitland Cricket’, Colin Johnston (19171993) received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his outstanding contribution to the sport, both as a player and administrator, for more than 50 years. He helped put the city on the map as a strong country cricket centre, encouraged state teams to visit Maitland, and won 11 premierships as captain of Norths cricket club. - Ben Murphy

news Mother’s fight for justice Patrizia Cassaniti will bring her fight for better workplace safety standards to Newcastle. In April, her son Christopher was crushed and suffocated to death when a 15-metre-high scaffolding tower collapsed on top of him at a Macquarie Park site in Sydney. Patrizia has since pushed for justice through a campaign called #ChristophersLaw, which will give all workers the assurance that they have the right, without being persecuted, to remove themselves from unsafe situations and to speak out when they believe they are in danger. The proposed law allows workers to do so without being victimised or fearful of losing their jobs; protects workers from death or injury; and ensures all safety officers appointed to largescale construction sites are independent – not employees of the builder. “I promise I’ll continue until it’s done,” Patrizia says. “Christopher, and all the others who have died at work, will not have died in vain.” Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, but the Cassaniti family hopes to make
a difference even before these inquiries have been completed. Patrizia and her husband, Rob, have also campaigned for the introduction of better industrial manslaughter charges in NSW to match those already in place in other states. Under ACT and Queensland legislation, body corporates face maximum fines of $10 million for industrial manslaughter, while individuals responsible for negligently causing death can receive jail sentences of up to 20 years. Victoria will apply similar sentences, with a maximum $16 million fine for corporations. “We feel devastated and empty by the loss of our beautiful boy,” Patrizia says. “While nothing can bring our son back, we don’t want his death to be just another statistic.” The NSW Regional Safety Conference & Expo will take place at NEX today and tomorrow (Thursday 4 and Friday 5 July). It is dedicated to showcasing the importance of Work, Health and Safety (WHS) in Australia. Patrizia joined a list of industry professionals who will speak on the subject.
Christopher Cassaniti, who died in a tragic workplace accident earlier this year.
The event’s founder, Sarah-Jane Dunford, says she is thrilled to have Patrizia on board. “Her story is so heartbreaking, but her mission to bring forth justice for her son and others who’ve been through a similar situation is truly admirable,” Ms Dunford says. “I don’t think there will be a dry eye in the house after we hear Patrizia’s story, and that sends a really powerful message.” - Ben Murphy

news Locals helping locals They’re a passionate bunch who will sew until their fingers ache, all to bring comfort to others. More than 60 ladies gathered in an unassuming church hall in Kotara last week for a Giant Sew-In to benefit the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, which supports locals with the illness. Their mission was deceptively simple: to cut, sew, iron and stuff as many Comfort Care Packs as possible, which included a crescentshaped pillow, designed to facilitate rest, and a bag to hold postoperative drainage tubes, as well as information about the foundation’s services. The packs are delivered to Hunter hospitals for breast care nurses to distribute to patients who have undergone breast surgery. The cushions can be used under the armpit, between breasts, as a
chest splint, arm rest or as seatbelt protection, while the drainage bags allow patients to move about more easily. And, in a first this year, blue fabric was used for a number of cushions for the small but measurable percentage of men who develop breast cancer. The initiative is year-round, with smaller sub-groups of volunteers meeting on a regular basis to sew. These ladies – known fondly as The Pink Army – are led by volunteer program coordinator and lifetime member of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, Jane Harris. Jane has personally seen to the creation of more than 10,000 care packs over the past 15 years. Patients who’ve received the packs are effusive in their thanks. Sarahann Collins, who had

surgery in May, said, “When I had my mastectomy, this pack was comforting to me physically and emotionally. To have these for someone going through a lifealtering experience was a really important and touching gesture.” Established in 2000 by Milton and Virginia Rigby, the foundation is a local charity, to which all donated funds stay in the region. It is the only breast cancer charity

news Principal’s fitness focus leads to national nomination
St Philip’s Christian College principal Darren Cox alongside students. Photo: Peter Stoop
Darren Cox wanted to think outside the box to curb high rates of teenage obesity and poor fitness levels. In 2018, the St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock principal decided to implement three gym and fitness sessions into students’ timetables. All lessons for those from Year 5 to 10 are carried out in the Nulkaba-
based college’s new $7 million stateof-the-art sports centre. “There is a lot in the media about young people being inactive,” Mr Cox told Newcastle Weekly. “Most schools tend to deliver the same type of [physical education] program, yet the numbers continue to skyrocket.
“I wanted to do something drastic in that space and it’s having a massive impact. “School should be fun and engaging – a place you want to come to every day.” To that end, Mr Cox said he aimed to address general wellbeing and its flow-on effects for mental health, as well as fitness levels, while staff were also supported through free 24/7 gym access. His proactive approach has led to a nomination for the Australian Principal of the Year in the primary category. “It’s incredibly humbling to be honest – I can’t quite believe it,” Mr Cox said. “When you start your teaching career 27 years ago in Western Sydney, you don’t think you’ll make a top-five nomination for something like this.”
Mr Cox, who joined the college a decade ago as deputy principal before taking on the top job four years later, said it had undergone vast changes during this time. “The literacy standards were 70% below minimum standards, but they are now 80% above, which we’re really happy with,” he said. “The school is on 100 acres out at Cessnock and now contains state-ofthe-art facilities – it’s very exciting for the Hunter Valley to have this on their doorstep. “People have seen the school grow and evolve over the years but, once they come in, they are blown away by how big it is.” The Australian Principal of the Year gong will be announced at the Australian Education Awards on Friday 16 August in Darling Harbour. - Ben Murphy

The true meaning of friendship Standing at the entryway to Warners Bay Baptist Church, it is clear to see just how many lives the ministry has touched through its Food & Friendship program. The room is abuzz for the program’s 10th anniversary high tea celebration, with almost 200 people filling the church. Volunteers hastily set more tables to welcome guests as they file in. Hugs are exchanged, tears of joy are shed. Next door, the low-cost grocery store and café enjoys a moment’s silence. But it’s not usually quiet. During any given week, Food & Friendship welcomes up to 100 or more shoppers, all of whom find respite in the conversations and interactions that take place there. The charity operates as an agency of Foodbank NSW & ACT, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, bread, cereals, pasta, condiments, snacks and frozen food at minimal cost for low-income earners and families. Volunteer Max Smith is the jack of all trades behind the packed bags of produce, having been
involved with the program since it outgrew its premises at Cardiff eight years ago and moved to Warners Bay. He said the program, largely delivered by manager Rani Prasad-Ferris and her army of 35 volunteers, was built on the foundation of caring for others. “That’s all people want, is to be cared for,” he says. Fellow volunteer Sharon Stoddard can certainly attest to that, being at the frontline of pastoral care for the past three years. She’s the one welcoming and chatting to people as they arrive. “A lot of them have gone through a lot of difficulty, and they come for the fellowship,” she says. “It’s amazing, you get blessed by their stories.” The ministry is far from insular. Mrs PrasadFerris has made it her life’s work to see to it that the church and its programs form part of a wider network to help those doing it tough. It regularly partners with a raft of charities, ranging from homelessness to disability services,

news Barry calls time after four decades’ service flies by
Founding member Barry Walton in front of a Westpac rescue helicopter in 2016.
Barry Walton remembers it vividly. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service volunteer had just finished duty one Sunday in the 1980s when a call came in. “A person was trapped in a tree at Merriwa after a thunderstorm
created a large amount of waterflow up there,” Barry tells Newcastle Weekly. “There was no winch back then, so we had a 50-foot rope with a soccer ball attached to it and lifting prongs.
Good to here
“I got picked up like a tea bag to rescue the gentleman.” Unbeknown to Barry, a young child witnessed the operation after going down to the riverbank with his father. That child turned out to be Mark Donaldson, who, many years later, became Australia’s first Victoria Cross recipient since the Vietnam War for his acts of gallantry in Afghanistan. Corporal Donaldson wrote about the rescue in his national bestseller, The Crossroad. “He mentioned in the book that it inspired him,” Barry says. “It was a real honour to meet him four years ago at Merewether Surf Club – he brought up that he’d seen me in the tree that day.” For Barry, it was just one of many rescues over the years. He first started flying on board a Bell 47 helicopter as a volunteer crewperson after being asked to join the service by his namesake, Evan Walton, in March 1975. “It all started through a conversation over a drink at Souths Leagues Club,” Barry says. “Evan said: ‘We’re forming a helicopter rescue service – you are the right height and weight; do you want to be a part of it?’” Barry completed a first aid course with St John Ambulance, began training in October, and the service launched at Merewether the following month. He was employed full-time as an aircrew officer in 1992 and
eventually stepped away from flying in 2003 after 28 years. Based out of the New England North West from 2000 to 2014, Barry was instrumental in the establishment of the Tamworth Base and community Volunteer Support Groups. He also helped to organise events and took care of media, before returning to Newcastle to continue his role with the marketing team. Tomorrow (Friday 5 July), he will call time on a 44-year association with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. From humble beginnings, the service now completes more than 2,000 hours of lifesaving missions each year across its three bases throughout Northern NSW and boasts more than 1,000 registered volunteers. “It’s been a journey and I’m really happy to have been a part of it and have worked with some great people and colleagues,” Barry says. “In 1975, it was just a beach patrol, so to see it go through a different array of aircraft – from a single to twin engine – is a massive achievement for us. “The team has grown to what it is today, and rural services have been so supportive. “To be able to get people who have suffered from the likes of horse or quad bike accidents back to hospital has saved lives.” - Ben Murphy

Maddi Ridgeway at the Ulinga netball courts in Cardiff South. Photo: Peter Stoop
Netballer shoots for the stars Cardiff’s Maddi Ridgeway was determined to turn her tears into sweat. After missing out on selection in her school team, the talented netballer threw herself into an intense training regime. “She was devastated,” her mother Renee says.
“So, she worked and worked and worked, then made the NSW team later that year.” Maddi represented the Under-12 side at the Australian Indigenous Schoolgirls Netball Championship in Melbourne in January. Not content to stop there, she went on to trial for the Australian
squad and was picked for the Gold Coast Netball Carnival. The competition, which takes place from 8 to 14 July, is made up of a senior division (18 years and under), intermediate (16 and under), junior (14 and under), and mini (12 and under). Renee believes her “extremely resilient” daughter wants to prove that hard work pays off. Maddi currently trains four days a week, including two sessions with Next Level Clinics, and plays for BNC in the Newcastle competition. “We’re beyond proud; we thought it was a great achievement to make the NSW side,” Renee says. “She was only 10 [years old] when she trialled for the Australian side and she was going up against 11-and-12-year-olds.” For Maddi, now aged 11, it is a chance to be a role model for other young Indigenous netballers. “From an Indigenous perspective, Maddi has struggled in the past in
that there aren’t too many players at an elite level, so this was a chance to shine,” Renee says. “She is proud of her culture and embraces that, but she doesn’t want to stop there. “She wants young girls to know that if you put in the hard work at training, it really pays off.” Renee adds the annual Koori netball knockout tournament at Charlestown has also been of great benefit. This October will mark the 20th anniversary of the event, which aims to increase participation of Aboriginal women in sport and recreation within a fun, competitive environment. “Maddi gets to play for her culture but also alongside family,” Renee says. “It has strengthened her culturally and is helping her growth.” Visit netball.world-sport.com.au for more on the Gold Coast carnival. - Ben Murphy

sport Mann steps up as Knights roll Broncos
Kurt Mann runs at the Brisbane defence during Newcastle’s win on Saturday night. Photo: Getty Images
A near-perfect first half fired Newcastle to a 2612 win over the Brisbane Broncos at McDonald Jones Stadium at the weekend. Despite losing star fullback Kalyn Ponga pregame, his replacement Kurt Mann stepped up to produce the final pass for the Knights’ first two tries to Edrick Lee and Lachlan Fitzgibbon. With the home side up 12-0, playmaker Mason Lino then floated a long ball for Shaun KennyDowall to dive over in the corner.
A desperate Broncos outfit, staring at a third straight loss, hit back early in the second half. Thomas Flegler took advantage of the extra numbers to finish off a second phase play after Newcastle forward James Gavet was sent to the sin bin. Lino then booted a penalty goal to make it 20-6, before Brisbane capitalised on another Knights error. Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs picked up the loose ball close to the Knights line and strolled across to stun the 24,397-strong crowd. However, a barnstorming run from centre Jesse Ramien saw him steamroll Darius Boyd and produce an offload for Lino, who raced away to seal the game. Newcastle will tackle New Zealand Warriors at home this Saturday 6 July from 7.30pm. Meanwhile, Ponga has been ruled out for two weeks with a calf injury, meaning he will miss State of Origin III. Ponga was injured during Queensland’s 38-6 loss to NSW in game two. The decider kicks off at 8.10pm on Wednesday 10 July at ANZ Stadium.
Phillips seals victory Trey Phillips settled a neck-and-neck battle on Saturday as the Canadian import slotted an overtime golden goal to hand Newcastle a 5-4 win against Sydney Ice Dogs. It proved fitting that Phillips bagged the winner in what was a Canada Day clash at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. Newcastle captain Bert Malloy netted the Northstars’ first goal of the night in the second period after Sydney had built a 2-0 lead. Shane Southwood and Phillips also found the net before the end of the period to put the home side in front, but it did not last for long. Sydney responded with another two goals, only for Newcastle’s Richie Tesarik to level it up with 10 minutes remaining. Neither side was able to break the stalemate, leaving the door open for Phillips to snatch victory in the Northstars’ first overtime decider of the season. Newcastle will play a double header in Victoria on 6 and 7 July. The Northstars face Melbourne Ice on Saturday at 5pm and Melbourne Mustangs on Sunday at 2pm.

Chocaholic’s dream

In honour of World Chocolate Day on 7 July, NW brings you two choc-loaded recipes to tuck into – as if you needed an excuse, right!? RECIPES COURTESY OF MAYVER’S
Chocolate pancakes with caramel and peanut butter sauce Prep: 20 mins Serves: 2 Gluten & dairy free | vegan For the pancakes 1 cup wholemeal spelt flour 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 3 medjool dates, pitted 2 Tbsp raw cacao powder 1 overripe banana
Blend the dates and the almond milk until they are well combined and there are no chunks. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour with the cacao powder, date/almond milk from the blender and the banana. Mash the banana through the mixture with a fork. In a non-stick frypan over medium heat, cook the pancakes for approximately 2 minutes either side. Enjoy.
For the sauce 1/3 cup coconut milk 2 Tbsp Mayver’s Peanut Butter 3 medjool dates
Chocolate tahini bliss balls Prep: 25 mins Serves: 12 Gluten & dairy free | vegan ¼ cup unhulled tahini 1/8 cup maple syrup ¼ cup finely shredded coconut ¼ cup almond meal ¼ cup quinoa flakes 1/8 cup cacao 1 Tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp instant espresso sprinkles cacao coconut flakes
Place all ingredients into a medium-size bowl and stir to combine. If the mixture is a little dry, add a splash of water (a teaspoon at a time) until it sticks together to form a sticky ‘dough’. Scoop a small section of dough and shape roll in the palm of your hand to shape into bite-size balls, repeat until all the mixture has been used. Tip: Use approximately 1 heaping teaspoon per bite, which makes them the perfect size for popping into your mouth on the down-low, so you don’t have to share! If you are going to coat your bliss bites in cacao, coconut or sprinkles, simply place your cacao, coconut and/ or sprinkles into a small bowl or zip lock bag and gently shake until nicely coated. Store in the fridge until ready to serve. 29

Christine Anu will perform in Newcastle on 20 July.
Heritage drives songbird Christine Anu’s Torres Strait Islander heritage has undoubtedly shaped her identity as one of Australia’s most iconic female entertainers. “My cultural heritage was always going to be a driving force,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “It’s a huge part of who I am as an artist.” Later this month, Anu will treat her Newcastle fans to an intimate, stripped-back set that fuses some of her most-loved songs with the stories behind them. Christine Anu: in Conversation and Song delves into personal anecdotes about Anu’s life and successes in the entertainment industry, her advocacy work for diversity and inclusion and the importance of First Nations culture, language and songlines. “I can’t wait to share my music with Newcastle,” Anu says. “I’m also looking forward to sharing the stories behind my music – stories some may not know about my life, my music and my work.” Born in Cairns, Queensland, Anu’s maternal family hailed from Saibai Island, off the south coast of Papua New Guinea, while her father came from Mabuiag, closer to the centre of Torres Strait.
Anu began her career as a dancer, studying for five years and later performing with Indigenous dance theatre company Bangarra. She went on to sing back-up vocals for the Rainmakers with Neil Murray of the Warumpi Band. Anu’s version of My Island Home became her trademark, inducted into the Sounds of Australia Registry alongside Midnight Oil and The Wiggles. She is currently working on two studio albums and a possible movie, and hosts Evenings on ABC Radio on Friday and Saturday nights. No longer as involved with dance as she once was, Anu admits bands like Yothu Yindi are “keeping it fresh” while she forges a new path, revelling in the intimate performances like those on her current tour. Christine Anu: in Conversation and Song has seen her perform in cosy spaces such as schools and portrait galleries. The Newcastle show is one of the last on the tour and for the year. Christine Anu performs live at Lizotte’s Newcastle on Saturday 20 July. Tickets are available at lizottes.com.au - Georgia Osland

Indigenous art explosion in Cessnock
Lake Macquarie artist Saretta Fielding at Cessnock Art Gallery. Photo: Peter Stoop
Authentic Aboriginal artworks and artefacts have been peppered throughout Cessnock to celebrate NAIDOC Week (7-14 July). On display until Sunday 14 July, the Kiray Putjung Aboriginal Art Trail starts at The Little Yengo Room in Wollombi and meanders through the town, with installations at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, the council’s administration building, Cessnock
and Kurri Kurri libraries as well as the Les Elvin Kungerra Gallery at the Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre. Featured artists include Lesley Salem and Saretta Fielding. A proud Wonaruah woman, Fielding was born in Sydney to an Aboriginal father of the Wonaruah people and a European mother. She now calls Lake Macquarie home.
Mayor Fraser joins Lions
Fielding has enjoyed the benefit of growing up within a large, close-knit extended family and much of her work is influenced by family connection and relationships. The art trail is part of a wide and varied program of NAIDOC Week events coordinated by Cessnock council. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is Voice, Treaty, Truth. Everyone is invited to participate in Cessnock’s celebrations, which will be held across the LGA until Wednesday 17 July. Other highlights include a free Kiray Putjung NAIDOC Family Fun Day at TAFE Park on Saturday 6 July from 10am to 2pm. Go to cessnock.nsw.gov.au/ NAIDOC to see the full program. - Georgia Osland

Incoming Valentine Lions Club president Richard Taylor; past district governor Ann Ryan; Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser; and outgoing club president John Duke.
Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser has been welcomed into the fold at Valentine Lions Club. Cr Fraser was inducted during the club’s changeover ceremony, at which incoming president Richard Taylor replaced outgoing president John Duke. Cr Fraser has long been a fierce advocate of the club’s work and its involvement in bringing community issues to the fore.
Since she was elected as mayor in September 2016, Cr Fraser has continued this passion, enthusiastically following local causes, including, but not limited to, the Lions District’s Big Red Kidney Bus program and the sponsorship of many children’s charities around the lake. Cr Fraser was sponsored by past Valentine Lions Club district governor, Ann Ryan.

Frames that see beyond rubbish An intrinsic connection to the ocean inspired one seaside family to bring a sustainable fashion brand to our shores. The Strettons of Anna Bay are behind sunglass designers PARAFINA’s expansion to Australia and New Zealand. Designed in Madrid, Spain, the eyewear range is made from recycled PET plastic bottles, aluminium cans and corks, diverting a whopping 7 tonnes of waste from landfill each year. “The cool thing is,” mum Deb tells Newcastle Weekly, “that rubbish is collected from all over the world – it just washes ashore from the ocean, so it could very well be our own.”
With a professional surfer son, Josh Stretton, and an ex-wind surfer in her husband, David, Deb and her family have always been drawn to the ocean and protecting it and its precious marine life against pollution. Having previously worked for Arnette Sunglasses, Deb saw an opportunity when PARAFINA commented on one of Josh’s social media posts. When they researched the brand, they realised it hadn’t yet launched across Oceania, and set about collaborating. But, for them, it’s not just about selling sunglasses. “We could go straight into retail,
PARAFINA is the world’s answer to ocean pollutants.
but for us, that’s not what it’s all about,” Deb says. “We want consumers to understand the product and see the value of it – that is, recycling waste into fashionable eyewear.” So far, the Strettons have taken to local markets, such as Warners Bay Markets and Sacred Tree Markets, and pop-ups to spread the word. In time, they will launch a retail space. PARAFINA sunglasses contain Category 3 lenses and are tested to Australian standards.

Fine-tune your pruning July is here – the middle of winter. The deciduous trees are dropping leaves later than normal as autumn was quite warm. Don’t be frustrated when the leaves drop and please don’t dump them in the bin as this is nature’s way of rejuvenating the soil. If composting isn’t your thing, just leave them to mulch under the tree that has given them life. Although July is pruning time, don’t be overzealous – once cut, it can’t be glued back on. Take care not to prune spring-flowering deciduous trees and shrubs that have been
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
cultivated for their blossom. Prune back Crepe Myrtle, being careful not to prune to last year’s nodes. Fuschia, grapes, westringia, plumbago, viburnum, photinias and hydrangea all enjoy a winter prune. Don’t worry too much about pruning hydrangea, they should simply be pruned back to stems where there are two eyes beginning to shoot, remembering when fertilising that flower colour can be affected by what you apply. For example, hydrangea are affected by
alkalinity and acidity, which play a vital role in the flowers’ colour. Cow manure, which is acidic, will encourage deeper shades, whilst poultry manure creates lighter shades of pink and mauve. White hydrangeas are unaffected by this fertilising and should remain white. Maintaining the present colour can be achieved by using a fertiliser such as Bounceback, which has a neutral pH. Deciduous trees and shrubs are available in nurseries now in their dormant state. Once planted, the most important criteria to remember is watering. When the warm weather begins, the sap begins to rise, and bud swell occurs – new plants should not be allowed to dry out. One of my favourite plants is hippeastrum, which should be separated now. Plant out large, low bowls to flower in spring. Deciduous fruit trees can be prone to leaf curl when new growth emerges. Apply copper oxychloride during the last two weeks of July and again during the fi rst two weeks of August. The best hint I can give readers is not to forget watering during winter as winds dry out the soil. Apply peat moss around the surface of shallow rooted azaleas and camellias.

PICK OF THE WEEK Spider-Man
Napoleon Dynamite
Friday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2002) From the superb credit sequence it’s immediately apparent Spider-Man is a comic-book adaptation of the highest order. On a field trip, high-school nerd Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire, pictured) is bitten by a genetically enhanced spider. Next day, he’s climbing the walls, shooting high-tensile webbing from his wrists and admiring his rippling physique. He uses his powers to get the girl (Kirsten Dunst), net the baddies and save New York from the evil Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). Applying fanatical devotion, director Sam Raimi does an amazing job.
Friday
Saturday, SBS VLND, 8.30pm, PG (2004) An instant cult classic was born when frizzy-haired, bespectacled, improbably named geek Napoleon Dynamite (a wonderful debut from Jon Heder, pictured) waltzed onto the screen in this highschool comedy. The episodic plot finds Napoleon befriending a fellow outcast (Efren Ramirez) and orchestrating his school presidency campaign, awkwardly wooing a fellow student (Tina Majorino), and contending with a home life under the same roof as his would-be ladies’ man brother (Aaron Ruell) and loopy uncle (Jon Gries).
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2011) Judi Dench (pictured) and Maggie Smith lead a formidable cast on a trip to India, where the diverse group of characters find themselves after “outsourcing” their retirements. A widow (Dench), a retired High Court judge (Tom Wilkinson) and an unhappy couple, among others, travel to the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on the promise of advertisements seen back in Blighty. Of course, not all is as hoped, with the ramshackle establishment run by a young entrepreneur (Dev Patel), and India itself, offering challenges and charm in equal measure.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
The weeks ahead are likely to be more sociable than usual, but also more serious than you prefer. It’s time to face up to the relationships in your life that aren’t working and give yourself some space. You’ll find there’s plenty of support around if required.
You may find that money will come from unusual people or unusual sources, so it would be a good idea to be more adventurous. Open your mind to ideas you would normally dismiss as outrageous. This is also a good time for minor changes on the work front.
It is time to make decisions on the work front and no matter how much you ask for advice from others, only you can make the final decision. Quick decisions are going to be needed from you; wait too long and colleagues may lose patience with you.
You’re certainly no slouch. You have more energy than most of the other signs put together, so if you don’t waste it, this could be a constructive time. It won’t take much to get your hormones surging through your veins, so don’t confuse physical attraction with romantic love.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
Mercury will move into the zenith of your chart and for many of you, there will be an opportunity to sign an important document, whilst for others the chance to travel for professional reasons. Snap up both these opportunities because they’re likely to be very good for you.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The situation at home is moving through a turning point where you gradually sense a more contented atmosphere. It will be a major relief and you’ll be aware of the shift from now on. You might experience the odd upheaval because you’re moving on to a new emotional base.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Behind the scenes, you sense that major psychological changes have taken place recently which make you more aware of your talents and appreciate yourself better. This will continue for a while, so find time every so often just to mull over private matters quietly in your own space and time.
Mercury in Leo brings a wealth of promising offers. Your only real problem is deciding which to accept and which to turn down. However, don’t take any risks with money, but you would be wise to accept a potentially lucrative offer you might receive from a colleague whilst out entertaining.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Mercury indicates that you may be feeling tired from burning the candle at both ends and whilst it takes a great deal to make you lose your temper, somebody could find just the right button to push! All it will take is a careless word or rudeness!
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC What is needed at the moment is more humour and a little less drama, especially where personal matters are concerned. When it comes to work matters, it will be a good idea to seize the initiative and try to push changes through. Voice your opinions, because others will be listening.
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB Any misunderstandings and tensions that may have been building in your intimate relationships will slowly start to melt away over coming days. If you happen to be fancy free, your chances of meeting someone special are now increased. It’s important that you don’t overload your work schedule.
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR For some of you, there will be a fresh start in the cash area of your life, so there may be an exciting present or perhaps a fresh source of income. Certainly, all opportunities that crop up need to be thoroughly investigated before you turn down any.

Good To Go
Takeaway is a convenient option most of us rely on when caught out and in need of a quick meal or for those last-minute, too-tired-to-cook days. The only problem with takeaway is it can produce a lot of single-use plastic waste. What’s the solution? Biome’s Good To Go range! Biome has designed a range of high quality containers to make takeaway, lunch and food on the go, waste-free. The reusable glass range features an airtight silicone seal, sustainable bamboo lid and a microwave, freezer, oven and dishwasher safe borosilicate glass base. Visit biome.com.au to browse the range.
Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has 3x Biome Good To Go container bundles, valued at $90, to give away. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with Good To Go in the subject line. Tell us your name, full contact details and one step you’ve taken to reduce your plastic waste. Entries close and winners drawn at 9am on Friday 12 July. One entry per person. Permit No. LTPM-16-00488.

My favourite things MY SON, HUNTER What I love about him and kids in general is the way they look at and engage you without expectation - it makes it so much easier to give back unconditionally. If I can change even one child’s life by giving my time for the Variety of Chefs Gala dinner, then that’s a great use of my time.
KNIFE When I got my first knife it was a sign of independence. As a chef, your knife is like an extension of your arm. I do have a favourite knife, which I sharpen as I need, usually on steel and every now and again on stone. A good knife is one that you personally like using.
NOVE BIKE
Jason Roberts
INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED CHEF
Jason Roberts is a New Zealand native who splits his time between Sydney and New York City as an internationally renowned chef, author, TV personality, fitness enthusiast and gluten-free lifestyle advocate. Jason always jumps at the chance to join friends in the industry to create positive change for marginalised groups. He believes building community around helping people is one of the best things in life. Jason will join a team of chefs in preparing a decadent four-course menu at this year’s Variety of Chefs Gala Dinner in Newcastle. The event raises funds for Variety – the Children’s Charity, which helps kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs throughout the Hunter Region. The dinner will take place on Saturday 10 August. Visit variety.org.au to buy tickets or phone 4965 4911. 62
Time on my bike gives me the chance to breathe clean air, have a sense of freedom, escape the pressures of work and allow myself to be in the moment. Each time I jump on I feel like I’m recreating the sense of independence of first learning to ride a bike.
RIO VISTA OLIVE OIL
IN2 THE WILD It provides off-grid, eco-friendly, sustainable tiny houses for holidays, which allow you to feel like you are part of the natural landscape while still providing creature comforts. The tiny houses allow me to get back to basics, enjoying nature and the smell of smoke.
Olive oil is the basis of so much of my cooking. I like to work directly with farmers and producers to help better my understanding of how the oil is produced. Being open to the complexity and tones of good olive oil can shape and define the way you cook.
