thursday 11 July 2019

This week... From the editor Plastic Free July has got me thinking about my plastic usage habits. I already use stainless steel straws at home and take my reusable shopping bags with me to the supermarket every time without fail. I’ve also been enjoying Ecosilk’s reusable bags, which are great for produce. But there is more I can do, personally, to close the loop on single-use plastics: admittedly I overuse clingwrap and ziplock bags where beeswax wraps would do the trick, and although I don’t buy takeaway coffee all that often, a reusable cup would be a better alternative to even the occasional cardboard one (most of which are plastic lined, even if labelled as biodegradable). At times, plastic pollution can seem like an insurmountable issue but imagine the collective difference we could make if we all took stock of our individual habits. If you want to do something about it, but don't know where to start, I love Newcastle-born Olympian Samantha Wells’ tips in Home this week as a jumping-off point. Self-professed ecowarrior Wells gives useful hints for each area of the home, from the kitchen to the laundry to the bathroom – even for travel. And, as she says, who says single use has to be single use? Think outside the square, go forth and save the planet.

Robyn Wilson receives treatment at the Newcastle Dialysis Clinic. Photo: Peter Stoop

Patients desperate for dialysis The time Robyn Wilson spends travelling to, from and receiving dialysis each week equates to a parttime job. As a retiree living in Corlette with her husband, in a house they

only built four years ago when they moved from Sydney, Robyn wishes she could spend more of that precious time enjoying life by the seaside. This challenge is a familiar one

for many dialysis patients on the Tomaree Peninsula, as there are currently no treatment options – neither public nor private – in the area. Patients must travel further afield; for Robyn, that means being driven by her sister or husband to the Newcastle Dialysis Clinic in Hunter Street, Newcastle West, three days a week. It’s an hour’s drive each way, plus five hours’ treatment time – a process that purifies the blood in place of normal kidney function. “It’s a really long day for me; when I get home I’m ready for bed,” Robyn tells Newcastle Weekly. Not-for-profit group Community Transport Port Stephens also runs a community bus pick-up and dropoff service, and takes patients to Raymond Terrace or John Hunter Hospital. For one couple Robyn knows, the travel became too much and they relocated to Newcastle for easier

access to treatment. In their desperation, Robyn and a group of about eight others have joined the fight with Port Stephens MP Kate Washington to campaign for services closer to home. Ms Washington has sought a meeting with NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard to lobby him on the issue. She says if that fails to gain traction, another option is to start a petition. “These residents and their families deserve local options,” Ms Washington says. “Being dependent on dialysis is hard enough without the difficulty of travelling hours and hours, multiple times a week.” Earlier, at the state election, Labor had promised to expand services at Tomaree Community Hospital, including dialysis, but those hopes were dashed when the Liberal government was re-elected. - Georgia Osland

news McKay reshuffles cabinet Opposition leader Jodi McKay has made wholesale changes to the NSW Labor frontbench. The former NBN newsreader, appointed to the top job more than three months after Labor’s heavy defeat in the state election, announced her reshuffled Shadow Cabinet last week. It features eight new faces, with another four MPs promoted to senior portfolios. Swansea MP Yasmin Catley has stepped up as deputy leader – the first time since the 1960s that a regional member of the Legislative Assembly will serve in a Labor leadership team. Ms Catley is also shadow minister for rural and regional jobs, as well as building reform and property. Fellow Hunter MPs Clayton Barr, Kate Washington, Jodie Harrison and Jenny Aitchison have all been

given portfolios. Cessnock member Mr Barr will be responsible for water; innovation, science and tertiary education; and is the new shadow minister for the Hunter. Ms Washington will now oversee environment and heritage, and rural health. Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison, who makes her debut in the McKay Shadow Cabinet, is responsible for early childhood learning, while Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison takes on primary industries; investment and tourism; and medical research. Ms McKay said the changes marked a major rejuvenation as Labor targeted a win over the Berejiklian government at the 2023 election. “We have a fresh new team with responsibilities that really give us a chance to reconnect with NSW communities, whether that is in

the regions or suburbs of Western Sydney,” she said. “I am incredibly proud of the Shadow Cabinet because it brings on some of the real talent within our caucus and signals to people exactly where Labor’s priorities lie, which is putting people first.” During her maiden speech, Ms McKay, who was born in Gloucester, spoke of how “country values” still guided “everything I do”. “But Gloucester is a town that

traditionally has not voted Labor,” Ms McKay said. “The Labor Party I lead will reach out to those in the community who have not voted for us in recent years. “It will be a big tent – and it will have a big heart. “And that means reaching out to rural towns, our multicultural communities, our small businesses and tradies, and those living in our outer suburbs.” - Ben Murphy

news Ambassadors support suicide prevention program An hour to learn how to save a life – will you answer the call? Twelve well-known local identities have already backed Newcastle-based institute Everymind’s delivery of a free online training program that provides people with the tools to start a potentially life-saving conversation. The Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) program equips participants with the knowledge and skills to identify warning signs that someone might be suicidal, as well as the confidence to talk and connect with professional care. A promotional video has been released across social media networks, featuring the likes of Surfest founder Warren Smith, Australian rugby league assistant and former Knights coach Michael Hagan, Screaming Jets singer songwriter Grant Walmsley, Got Your Back Sista chief executive Melissa Histon-Browning, and Waves of Wellness lead facilitator Dave Kelly. Mr Walmsley says his reason for supporting the campaign is a deeply personal one. “I have lost too many mates to suicide,” he says.

“Anything we can do to help understand how to assist someone who is having suicidal thoughts is a great step forward. “An hour spent can save a local life.” Other ambassadors who have signed up for the program include Newcastle Business Club president Craig Wellings, Newcastle Museum director Julie Baird, Hunter Valley Coal Chain coordinator Kirsten Molloy, Director of Hamilton Doctors Ben Seckold, Badger Australia chief operating officer Belinda Smith, ABC Newcastle presenter Dan Cox, and well-known media personality Mike Rabbitt. Everymind director Jaelea Skehan believes the ambassadors’ support has been incredibly important in encouraging people to complete the QPR course. “Suicide is something which touches every Australian and community, including ours,” she says. “I would like to say thank you to each and every one of these ambassadors, who have donated their time, energy and participation in supporting us and spreading the word about QPR

and the role [we] can play.” She adds businesses, community groups and sporting clubs can also get involved. “Some organisations in the Hunter are using the QPR training as part of workplace support for employees, providing each person with an hour of work time to complete it, which is amazing,” she says. “If there is one thing that we could ask all Newcastle people to do this July, it’s to do QPR.” QPR training has been made available as part of LifeSpan Newcastle and additional funding support from the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network. It is available to people over the age of 18 via the everymind.org.au website. Interested organisations and businesses can register multiple participants at no cost. If you need any assistance, there is support available 24/7. Please visit lifeline.org.au or call 13 11 14. Everymind is dedicated to the prevention of suicide and mental ill-health nationally. - Ben Murphy

news Face of melanoma foundation retires When Jenny Noblet first started at the Hunter Melanoma Foundation, the cancer was difficult to treat and didn’t respond to traditional forms of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. “That’s why the foundation invested heavily in research and funded 10 PhD scholarships over the past two and a half decades,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “We were told that was the only way we were going to make a difference. “Now we are seeing the benefits of all that investment with the immunotherapy drugs and people’s response to that.” Ms Noblet will retire from her role as chief executive tomorrow (Friday 12 July) after almost 26 years. She said the foundation had worked hard to raise awareness and reduce rates of melanoma over the decades, with a particular focus on the younger generation through school programs. A Checkmate campaign was also developed as a direct result of studies that showed patients who presented with thick melanoma were mostly in older age groups and largely men.

“Our aim has always been to reduce the incidence and mortality and you do that through prevention and early detection,” Ms Noblet said. “A lot of what we started a long time ago has been copied by other people. “For instance, visiting schools, which we’ve been doing for the past 15 years, basically reinforcing the ‘No Hat, No Play’ – this is why you’re wearing a hat and playing in the shade. “I couldn’t believe it but they’re only just starting to introduce that in America and, of course, they would have a higher incidence than us because of the population.” Despite the positive progress, Ms Noblet said many Australians did not understand ultraviolet (UV) radiation. She added that, one weekend several years ago, 40-degree heat forced sporting clubs to cancel events across the Hunter Region, with the UV sitting at an extreme rating of 15. The following weekend, the temperature dropped to 27 degrees, so all sports went ahead despite the UV remaining the same. “People don’t realise that and, of course, when

it’s 40 degrees we remember to put a hat on and stay in the shade,” Ms Noblet said. “When it’s 27 or 24 degrees, it’s really pleasant and you don’t think about it and that’s when you get a lot of your damage. “So, there’s still a lot for us to do on that front.” Ms Noblet’s replacement, Claudia Tolhurst, took over the role on 1 July. - Ben Murphy

A domestic violence resource centre in Newcastle is in urgent need of community support to keep its essential services in place beyond September. Jenny’s Place, a not-for-profit with more than 40 years’ experience, is focused on breaking the cycles of domestic violence and homelessness. It provides free specialist domestic violence services to the local community via operating women’s and children’s crisis refuges and Outreach services, as well as the Newcastle Domestic Violence Resource Centre (NDVRC). After being established in 2008, this service will have no government or private funding beyond September 2019 and requires the community’s support to continue. With the generous backing of local film production company, 33 South Films and marketing agency Vicinity Marketing, Jenny’s Place has kickstarted a fundraising campaign. It calls for people to help victims of domestic and family violence across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter by donating, and adding your name to a petition to the government to provide ongoing funding for the resource centre. All donations received will go directly towards supporting victims of domestic violence to move on to living violence-free lives. Visit givenow.com.au/jennysplace to make a donation or go to change. org and search ‘Jenny’s Place’ to sign the petition.

news

Five decades on from “one giant leap for mankind” An almost impossible-to-discern picture of a man on a ladder. Those immortal words: “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” On 21 July 1969, in Australia, the USA effectively ended the space race with Russia as Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. It was a moment Astronomical Society of the Hunter president Col Maybury would never forget. He had been watching the coverage on a poor-quality blackand-white television with his father, Jim, in Abermain when the picture suddenly improved. “As we are now aware, the first TV of a man on the moon was captured by the dish at Parkes,” he tells Newcastle Weekly ahead of the

50th anniversary this month. “It was the only high gain radio antenna on this side of the Earth that could lower far enough to pick up signals from a spacecraft just on the horizon in the moon’s orbit around the Earth and the Earth’s rotation.” Mr Maybury turned to his father, who was born in November 1902 – a year prior to the world’s first acknowledged powered aircraft flight, undertaken by the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. More than 60 years later, Jim saw men land on the moon. “Six hundred million people watched it,” Mr Maybury said. “Fancy [my father] being born before man flew 120 metres and then to see them again walking on the moon, some 380,000 kilometres

away.” Mr Maybury followed the space race from the start. He watched Sputnik 1 – the first satellite launched in space by the Soviet Union – fly over in 1957 from his vantage point in Melbourne. “One of the big things in my life was watching the Sputnik; I was at the School of Signals doing an advanced course and we’d gathered to see it. “From way down south, in the Antarctic, up came this little tiny star that floated across. “In that crowd, there was a stunned silence as it went over.” The Soviet Union then sent the first human – Yuri Gagarin – to space in 1961. As the rivalry intensified, US president John F Kennedy pledged that the country would put a man on the moon and return him safely to Earth before the end of the decade. Mr Maybury believes it is the “most amazing thing mankind has ever done”.

“I read the accounts of [Michael] Collins, Aldrin and, of course, Armstrong; all of them gave the impression that they didn’t think they were coming back. “As one of them said, there were over two million moving parts in the whole of the machinery and, even if they operated at 99.9%, it still left so many opportunities for something to go wrong.” He said subsequent conspiracy theories of the moon landing, which first emerged in the early 1970s, were wide of the mark. “When they planted the American flag, people said there was wind blowing and the flag was moving,” he said. “It wasn’t – they had jammed it in and wiggled it and, of course, in low gravity and no atmosphere, the flag flapped.” Mr Maybury will attend the 50th anniversary celebrations at Parkes on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July. - Ben Murphy

Time waits for no one, that’s a fact; but neither do time capsules, it would seem. Former St Paul’s Parents & Friends (P&F) president, Stephen Vidot, and secretary, Graham Pritchard, returned to the Gateshead primary school last week to unearth a time capsule that was considered lost. Mr Vidot and Mr Pritchard were instrumental in the time capsule’s burial in 1988. They had intended for it to be dug up 25 years later, but the school could not find it and assumed it was stuck under a new concrete path that had since been laid. Last year, when the two men visited the school their children have attended, to their surprise they were told it was missing. So, on Thursday, at the school’s annual Feast Day celebrations and 31 years after the time capsule was buried,

Mr Vidot and Mr Pritchard led the school to its burial site on the convent grounds. They found it in 10 minutes. “[In 1988] the P&F decided that these three flagpoles were a good landmark to help us identify it later,” Mr Vidot said. Staff, students, parents and friends watched eagerly as the two men finally unearthed the time capsule, which contained copies of the Newcastle Herald and the Catholic Education Reporter, a school emblem and students’ artworks. “It was wonderful,” Mr Pritchard said, “it brings back memories.” “It looks as though it’s lasted fairly well for 31 years.” Mr Pritchard added it would be great if the school buried another time capsule, but perhaps made a note of its location. - Georgia Osland

Twenty-seven new police recruits have been allocated to the Hunter Region. Newcastle Local Police District was assigned six graduate officers, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens Hunter five apiece, and the Hunter Valley received 11. Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery said the frontline staff were a welcome addition, particularly in

her electorate, which had been experiencing above-normal rates of crime. “This is a good start, given we have been overlooked in previous allocations of new recruits,” she said. The Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens Hunter local police districts received 18 new officers in the past three years.

Nobbys Headland reopened at the weekend. Photo: Peter Stoop

Landmark reopens to public One of Newcastle’s most iconic sites has reopened to the public as its owners shine a spotlight on longterm possibilities. Access to Nobbys Headland was suspended in January pending a determination of the site’s future use after the end of a licence with business improvement association Newcastle Now. However, the heritage-listed landmark opened its gates on Saturday and will remain accessible from 8am to 4pm on weekends, as well as cruise ship days. Opening hours are set to be extended from 7am to 7pm when daylight saving is in operation during the summer months. Nobbys Headland is owned by the Port Authority of NSW, which manages the navigation, security and operational safety needs of commercial shipping in Newcastle Harbour, Sydney Harbour, Port Botany, Port Kembla, Eden and Yamba. Port Authority will call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for

long-term public use of Nobbys Headland from 1 August until 1 December. “Nobbys Headland is an iconic landmark in Newcastle and a destination for the community and tourists alike,” chief operating officer for Newcastle and Yamba, Emma Fensom, said. “We’re pleased to announce that the community can again enjoy the spectacular vistas of Newcastle Harbour from one of our famous landmarks. “We look forward to engaging with the community to find a longterm use for Nobbys Headland that will best serve the people of Newcastle.” As well as being one of the city’s most beloved locations, Nobbys Headland remains a key piece of operational infrastructure for the safe movement of ships through Newcastle Harbour. It has an active signal station and a lighthouse, which is owned and operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Lifeline extends collection Lifeline’s retail shop in Hamilton has extended its free furniture collection. The store currently collects saleable furniture on weekdays from 9.30am to 4pm but will test an additional day on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. “Lifeline will collect any furniture item that can be sold in our stores; we are unable to collect anything that is damaged, soiled, or deemed unsaleable,” local hub

manager, Norma Argueta, said. “We are excited to offer this service and believe this to be the only weekend collection offer in NSW.” The sale of donated goods will go to the Lifeline crisis support line, suicide prevention and other services delivered at the local centre in Islington. Phone the Lifeline Hamilton shop on 4940 2070 to book furniture.

The Wallaroos will kick off a two-Test series against Japan in Newcastle this weekend. Australia has only ever played its Asian rivals once – at the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup, where the Wallaroos prevailed 29-15. The first Test will take place at Newcastle’s No.2 Sportsground at 3pm on Saturday 13 July, before moving to North Sydney Oval on Friday 19 July. “Newcastle, Maitland and the Hunter has a proud history of women’s rugby and was the place that the first Wallaroos squad was

selected,” Rugby Australia Head of Women’s Rugby, Jilly Collins, said. “We want to capitalise on this historic game, including helping to encourage more young people to take up rugby. “There will be plenty of people driving from around the state to come watch this historic Test match and we know that the Japanese always have a passionate supporter base when their team plays across the world.” Fans will be treated to a feast of action, with Hunter Women XV tackling Southern Inland XV, followed by Australian Defence Force Women taking on New Zealand Defence Force Women, plus plenty of precinct activities for the whole family to enjoy. Gates open at 11am. Tickets are available via Ticketek. Free entry for under-16s.

Northstars split Victorian double header

Newcastle’s Richie Tesarik in action against Melbourne Ice at the weekend. Photo: Phil Taylor

Newcastle has split the results from its double header weekend in Victoria. The Northstars travelled to Melbourne to take on the Ice and Mustangs minus captain Bert Malloy (unable to travel), as well as Liam Manwarring and Tomas Landa (both injured).

Despite hitting back twice, Newcastle eventually suffered a 4-3 loss to the Ice on Saturday. A Richie Tesarik goal tied up the first period and Jayden Ryan then put Newcastle in front. The Ice responded through Mackenzie Caruana to make it 2-all, before Sammy Banga again gave the visitors the lead. However, two more goals from the Ice sealed its first win of the regular season over Newcastle, which had won the previous three matches by a combined score of 16-5. The Northstars were another man down against the Mustangs on Sunday as Paddy Ward was ruled out through injury. Goals from Shane Southwood, import Trey Phillips and Hamish Powell built a 3-0 lead after two periods, before the home side finally got on the scoreboard via

A depleted Newcastle Knights outfit came within four minutes of an upset against New Zealand at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night. The Knights were without seven starters – Mitchell Pearce, David Klemmer, Daniel Saifiti and Tim Glasby (Origin duty), as well as Kalyn Ponga and Edrick Lee (injured) and Mitch Barnett (suspended) – for the clash. The home side bravely led 12-2 at half-time, but a Warriors comeback in the second period saw Newcastle suddenly trail 18-14, before Sione Mata’utia grabbed his second try of the night in the 70th minute to make it 20-18. However, a grubber kick six minutes later was scooped up by New Zealand big man Sam Lisone, who crashed over for the winner. The Knights face Canterbury at home this Friday 12 July from 8pm.

Rollicking journey on the high seas You might be more familiar with Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1880 operetta The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty than you’d think. Its scores have featured in the likes of animated sitcom The Simpsons, where Barney sings the first part of the Major-General’s Song, and, more recently, in Australian Beef’s The Greatest Meat on Earth musical ad. The 1994 revival starring Jon English brought the operetta to life once more and popularised it among modern audiences. Its many iterations in film and on television prove just how versatile the operetta is, lending itself to a

26

rollicking good time in any context. The latest adaptation, produced by Opera Hunter, is no exception. “Because it’s public domain, you can have a lot of fun with it and make it your own,” Freya Meredith, who plays the character of Mabel, tells Newcastle Weekly. Meredith’s fiancé Brent Hanson has been cast as Frederic, a pirate’s apprentice who falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of MajorGeneral Stanley. Frederic is due to be relinquished from duty after his 21st birthday, but there’s a snag: as he was born in a leap year, it is discovered that he is not yet 21, but a boy of five.

cover story Tashana Hardy and Freya Meredith double as Mabel, and, front and centre, Matthew Gallimore as the Pirate King. Photo: Peter Stoop

He battles an internal struggle between love and his sense of duty. Fast forward from 1980s Cornwall to present-day Newcastle, two alternating casts – For Love and For Duty – will perform a series of shows from Wednesday 24 July to Sunday 4 August at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre. Sydney-based actor Tristan Entwistle, who won a CONDA for his portrayal of Leporello in

Opera Hunter’s production of Shakespeare’s Don Giovanni in 2017, plays the Pirate King in the For Love cast, while Matthew Gallimore fills those boots in For Duty. Neither actor has approached the role the same way. “All the more reason to come and see the show twice,” Gallimore quips. Go to stickytickets.com.au - Georgia Osland

Region’s respect for Humpback Highway It’s become a significant event on the Port Stephens calendar. The Human Whale pays homage to the Humpback Highway, with about 35,000 of the marine mammals set to pass along the east coast of Australia this winter. In 2018, a crowd of 1,318 people turned out at Fingal Beach to form a 100-metre-long outline of a humpback whale, beating the previous record by 300. Imagine Cruises owner Frank Future, who has co-organised the event alongside Moonshadow-TQC Cruises’ Mel Turner for the past few years, says this weekend’s edition promises an even bigger attendance. The event has taken place since 2011 and, due to its ever-increasing

popularity, moved from Shoal Bay to Fingal Bay in 2017. “Every year we’ve had a few more and last year it jumped to 300, which was great,” Mr Future tells Newcastle Weekly. “It started, I guess, by thanking the whales and an appreciation for the fact that they turn up in what traditionally has been quiet in terms of tourism. “The Human Whale is a bit of a signature event for Port Stephens – I’m not aware that it happens anywhere else in Australia – and it is a fun, family event. “It’s one of the success stories in conservation here as well; not every population of whales is making such a recovery as ours.

A total of 1,318 people formed a Human Whale at Fingal Beach in 2018.

“We’ve never done more than one whale before but we’re hoping, if we get enough people this year, to do an adult and a calf. “Later in the season, around September, you see mums coming back with their calves and that’s one of my favourite parts of the year.” Apart from the formation, there will also be a conservation theme, which includes interactive and

educational displays, while event organisers have worked alongside Destination Port Stephens and Fingal Bay businesses. Registrations for the Human Whale will start at 10am this Sunday 14 July. A formation is set to follow at 11.45am, before a midday flyover from drones to capture footage of the free event. - Ben Murphy

Newcastle-born Olympic aerial skier Samantha Wells shares her top tips and tricks for how to live life with less single-use plastic. You can follow Sam on Instagram @ uptown.eco #PlasticFreeJuly Kitchen Kitchen cleaning tools need replacing fairly often. There are so many great natural fi bre brushes and cleaning tools available that easily be substituted into your cleaning routine. Packing lunches? Convenience foods may be convenient, but they’re expensive; and come with a lot of plastic packaging. To save money, and the environment, buy your lunch supplies in bulk/larger packages, and use reusable containers or wax wraps to pack your lunch. Better yet, choose foods that come packaged naturally in a shell or hardy skin! Side note: Newcastle council has a great Low Waste Lunch resource [newcastle.nsw.gov.au]

Bathroom With so many products and tools that we use every day, the bathroom can be an intimidating place to address your plastic use. There is

no need to go out and replace all your plastics at once. The key is to start small; make one simple swap at a time, using what you already have fi rst. Be considerate of how you dispose of your existing plastics, do your research and invest in quality, eco-conscious products and tools that will last. Ladies and gents! Green your shave game and save yourself some money. Investing in a quality plastic-free razor is a great way to save money over time. Replacement blades are cheap to buy, easy to replace and are plastic-free.

Laundry Three easy ways to reduce the plastic waste associated with your laundry detergent:

Travel The majority of plastic rubbish collected on coastal sites is food related. By carrying a simple reusable cutlery set, you’ll always be ready to eat, single-use cutlery

free! When travelling by air, metal cutlery will not be allowed through security. To avoid the disappointment of having your cutlery set confiscated, pack your metal cutlery set in your checked luggage, or source a set to borrow at your destination. I take a cloth serviette on-board with me and keep the fi rst set of plastic cutlery I am given. After my meal I wipe them down with the paper napkin, wrap them up in my cloth serviette, and then reuse them at other onboard mealtimes. I even use them throughout my trip, and return journey – who said single use had to be single use? Travel toiletries are a single-use plastic trap. Why not decant some of your existing toiletries into small containers that you already own? Think small bottles, jars, tins, even wax wraps and cloth handkerchiefs or serviettes for bars of soap and knick-knacks.

detergent refi ll program like The Dirt Company’s Washplan; 3. Refi ll your laundry detergent container at a bulk food store (Naked Foods at Charlestown Square offers this service). In Newcastle, our pegs can cop a beating out on the line in the salt and sunshine. Plastic pegs fare poorly in the sun, becoming brittle and breaking into smaller fragments in no time at all. Use timber or bamboo pegs; these are cheap and easy to source. Or, invest in some wire pegs. Living near the coast, marine grade stainless steel pegs will go the distance in the salty conditions. Both options are no different to use than standard plastic pegs.

PICK OF THE WEEK Apollo 13 Saturday, NBN, 7pm, PG (1995) A wonderfully conceived epic from director Ron Howard, based on the amazing true story of the ill-fated 13th Apollo mission bound for the moon. It details the plight of astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks, pictured), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), who left for the stars on a “routine” flight that went very wrong. Howard gives the viewer a true sense of the size of a space mission, without getting too caught up in the details. A movie marvel.

Star Trek Beyond

Gravity Saturday, NBN, 9.50pm, M (2013) Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) created a cinematic masterpiece with Gravity – it will knock your socks off with the force of its spectacular visuals. A deceptively simple plot, full of unexpected twists and turns, is handled with aplomb by Hollywood favourites Sandra Bullock (pictured) and George Clooney. The mismatched pair must work together to survive after a freak accident leaves them helpless and adrift in space. Gravity is exhilarating and is sure to leave you breathless.

Wednesday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (2016) The third Star Trek outing since the reboot sees Justin Lin (four of The Fast and the Furious films) replace J.J. Abrams in the director’s chair. It also sees the crew of the USS Enterprise exploring the farthest depths of space, beyond where anyone has been before. It’s the kind of place where, when something goes wrong it’s up to you to get yourself out of trouble, as no one else is around to help. Chris Pine (pictured), Zachary Quinto et al are back for another go around with Idris Elba (The Wire) as the villain of the piece.

At the same time that communicative, fastthinking Mercury is in fiery, masculine and positive Leo, it sextiles passionate Venus while connecting with exuberant, generous Jupiter and squaring off against explosive Uranus in determined Taurus. Therefore, Deborah will find that keeping her feelings to herself will be almost impossible. She just needs to be sure not to lose her temper in the wrong place at the wrong time! Meanwhile, unexpected breakthroughs with longstanding issues on the financial, business or property front are likely.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

You instinctively knew that 2019 was going to be one of the years for opening up, aiming high and being more confident. If not all is working out as you had hoped, you are heading in the right direction with a fair wind behind you. Think positively and the rewards will soon come.

The planets promise to bring expansion and good luck to foreign matters or travel. You will have a good reason in coming weeks to feel more hopeful about the future. Try to plan something special with someone special; the money will be available to do something fun.

The planets suggest you are finally in a position to push ahead with any long-standing career or monetary goals. However, don’t allow others to talk you out of following your plan. At any moment, people may change their minds or try to force their idea upon you.

For some time you’ve permitted others to run the show and even dictate to you. Now the time has come for you to grab the reins in your own firm grasp. Be confident and push ahead. There’s also a suggestion of a romantic feel about your love life.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Money may have been an area of concern recently as you recognise that certain plans weren’t paying off fast enough. There’ll be a major turnaround now and you’ll get the clarity to see where you can save more of your income. Be prepared to discipline yourself if required.

Now is a great time for making plans, because you really do have a chance to live up to your largerthan-life reputation. Uranus may cause tension between you and loved ones and arguments could arise. Somebody has to be cool, calm and collected; it might as well be you!

During the next few weeks, you must make time for loved ones. Having done your duty in this area, you’ll be free to be as creative as you like and focus on your loftiest ambitions. Time has also come when you must focus on your health to achieve happiness.

To avoid exhaustion, be realistic about the amount of work you can get through. If a professional proposition is put to you, snap it up! Using your charm with your family will ensure you receive their cooperation. You can look forward to a potentially exciting time.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

You can begin to see the rosy glow on the horizon and the possibility of new projects working better than previous efforts. There may be hurdles in the way and sometimes you take a step back before leaping ahead again, but you can afford to rely on good friends.

It looks as if others are being their own worst enemy, which is fine unless it affects you. A sudden change of plan brought about by their inconsistency and sheer incompetence could throw you off stride. Bide your time because you will soon get the chance to turn the tables.

Where career matters are concerned, don’t wait for others to make up their minds. Take the initiative and show just how forthright and decisive you can be. On the personal front, try to stay out of heated debates amongst family members or they’ll ruin your leisure activities.

Your concentration is certainly increased, so if you’re working on anything intricate, keep plugging away. Focus on everything that is important to you because others will notice how industrious you are and may even offer to help, but whether you allow them to do so is unlikely.

ADVENTURE I love the investigative process of stepping into the unknown and figuring out what’s around the corner; both in our own backyard and abroad. I love exploring new cultures, cuisines, languages, perspectives and ways of life. I’m fortunate that my sport has taken me to many places in the world!

My favourite things OLYMPIC GAMES The Olympics is the one event that peacefully unites the world under the values of excellence, friendship and respect. It’s the pinnacle sporting event that has ultimately led my life experiences, and shaped me to be the motivated, hardworking and diligent person that I am today.

TA-DA! MOMENTS Whether it’s giving a handcrafted gift, mastering a new skill, completing work, helping someone else, coming up with a great idea, or simply tidying my sock draw... I love the feeling of accomplishment, pride and satisfaction in the moment when I get to say ‘Ta-da!’

Samantha Wells OLYMPIC FREESTYLE AERIAL SKIER

This homegrown Novocastrian is far more than just a jet setting, high flying, adrenaline fuelled, acrobatic snow bunny; Sam is a health promotion professional, personal trainer, handcrafting fiend, upcycling enthusiast, baking extraordinaire and self-proclaimed ‘granny at heart’. After retiring from elite sport in 2018, Sam’s focus turned to promoting human and environmental health through environmentally sustainable business practices. An active eco-conscious community member, Sam is an avid participant and textile workshop leader at Upcycle Newcastle. Staying in touch with her roots as an athlete, Sam is an exercise leader with the Go4Fun program, and is also sharing her Olympic experiences in high schools across NSW as part of the NSW Olympics Unleashed program. 62

READING

DAd Jokes DAD JOKES I was raised on unusually high doses of corny dad jokes thanks to supplement of my gymnastics coach. I love the awkward moment when the air is filled with the lameness of the joke, and yet the ‘dad’ delivering the joke is 100% confident there will be laughter; that’s what gets me giggling. Every. Time.

Despite my adrenaline-fuelled antics, I really do enjoy hunkering down with a good book, a cup of jasmine tea and a crunchy snack! I am a fiction fanatic, though I also love inspiring stories about true events and personal development texts.
