LIFE: Learning Is ForEver ....for this is wisdom, to be learners to the end. - John Calvin (Theologian and Pastor) If you are an active adult with a desire to never stop learning, then we invite you to take part in NCI's LIFE (Learning Is ForEver) program. This lifelong learning initiative is made possible by the generous support of Barbara Matthews, a wonderful example of the pursuit of learning and wisdom. We invite you to participate in the various learning opportunities made available throughout the year - all of which are designed to be engaging, enlightening, and interesting. Any adult is welcome to participate in our programs. There are no prerequisites to participate and no fee to participate unless otherwise noted. All you need is an interest in sharing an educational experience. Every course is designed to foster lively, fun engagement with a focus on topics and resources available in Martinsville and Henry County. We hope you will find programs that fit your interests. You will walk away with the knowledge of simple, effective, everyday methods to heal your body. Presented by Janet Steward, Health Coach, Smart Body Dynamics January 23 | 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. Shootout on Fayette Street Author, Tom Perry, discusses this reallife, local event, which happened during the late 19th century in the city of Martinsville. This is only one tale of many that's included in his latest book, Murder in a Rearview Mirror: Stories of True Crime.

February 20 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. February is AMD & Low Vision Awareness Month Did you know that AMD (Agerelated Macular Degeneration Disease) was the leading cause of blindness for those over the age of 55 in the US? Or that AMD is more common than Alzheimer's, breast cancer and Parkinson's disease combined? In this informative presentation, Dr. Theresa Bechtel, of Martinsville Eye Center, will discuss your risk factors and ways to maintain healthy eyes.

2019 LIFE Learning Opportunities February 27 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm. Colonial Toys and Their Origins Dressed in period clothing, Gail Vogler shares in her collection of colonial and other primitive toys with discussion of their origins and demonstrations of how they were enjoyed by colonial children.
March 6 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Hospice: Adding Quality of Life to Each Day Many of us have misconceptions that hospice care means someone is at the end of life and giving up hope. But hospice actually changes one’s focus from length of life to quality of life. This presentation, by Mountain Valley Hospice, will give you more insight as to the role of hospice and palliative care givers, and how you could be a hospice volunteer.
March 13 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. The Ultimate Guide to Improving Back Pain Back pain can be annoying, frustrating, and even debilitating. March 19 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. History of Martinsville Speedway Clay Campbell, President of Martinsville Speedway, discusses the history of the Speedway and its economic impact in our community. The official pace car of the Speedway will also be on site. LIFE participants and race fans are welcome!

March 27 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Mobility Management/Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) Mobility Management, a service offered by Southern Area Agency on Aging provides transportation access for seniors to include ride sharing, Medicaid transportation, rides to meal sites, transportation for veterans, etc. SCSEP is a service offered that provides job training and placement for people age 55 and older who meet the program's guidelines. Staff members from SAAA will explain more detail about both of these services and how you can qualify.
April 3 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Eat to Heal! Superfoods That Fight Cancer Learn about anti-angiogenic foods that fight cancer. Learn how they impact the healing process by stopping the blood supply to tumors. You will walk away with the knowledge of foods that you can begin to incorporate in your diet today. April 23 | 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Volunteer Fair If you have some time to spare and are wondering how to get involved in your community, we can find a spot for you. April is National Volunteer Month and NCI is partnering with the MHC Chamber of Commerce to bring you this exciting opportunity to meet with various non-profit organizations to see where you can make a difference. Explore your options and meet new people by browsing the different booths, plus register for door prizes!
April 17 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. How Martinsville & Henry County Became an Industry Powerhouse From tobacco to furniture to textiles, the Martinsville and Henry County area was once a mecca for trade and industry. This informative and interesting lecture, presented by local historian Eric Monday, will bring insight and a look back at where and how this all happened.
May 1 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. How to be an Antiques Detective Determining the age and value of an antique can be a difficult task, even for a skilled antiques dealer. Dr. Mervyn King, a local antiques expert, shares his years of experience on ways to determine if your find is a treasure or trash. May 9 | 3:00 - 5:00 pm Creating a Button Tree QVC Artist, Karen Eggleston will show you how to create a beautiful, one of a kind work of art using buttons. Bring along those precious buttons you have saved in a jar for years and didn't know what to do with them. Or, we will have some for you to use for this project. May 15 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Alzheimer's, Dementia, and Your Hearing Audiologist, Paul Ashbrook, speaks on the mysterious connection between hearing loss and Alheimer's and dementia. Evidence suggests that by treating hearing loss, the risk of dementia can be mitigated. Attending this informative session could change your life.

May 22 | 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. History of Beaver Creek Plantation Beaver Creek was built in 1776 by George Hairston on a 30,000-plus acre royal land grant and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and on Virginia Landmarks Register. This lecture, brought to you by Carter Bank & Trust, will highlight the plantation's rich history and its role in the early economic growth of Martinsville. May 30 | 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Tour & Taste at Hamlet Vineyards (Off-site Event) Enjoy a tour, tasting, and discussion of the founding of Hamlet Vineyards, agritourism, and the growth of the Virginia wine industry, presented by Virginia Hamlet. June 10 & 11 | 10:00 - 2:00 p.m. AARP Smart Driver Course This two-day course, presented by AARP volunteers, will review the rudiments of safe driving, help you stay safely and longer in your car, and maintain independence as long as possible. By completing this class, you may qualify for a small discount on your auto insurance, based on your policy. You will also learn what options are available when you know it's time to give up your keys or how to talk to a family member about giving up theirs. Cost to AARP members is $15.00 Non-members is $20.00 Cash or checks made out to AARP only.
June 26 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Old News is Good News Join us as journalist veterans, Ginny and Mike Wray, offer insight into the day at a daily newspaper, share poignant and interesting stories regarding some of their interviews and experiences during their careers, and share precious photos from years past. In this age of digital news, we'll discuss how we can stop newspapers from fading into obscurity. .

2019 LIFE Learning Opportunities July 2 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Dinosaur Discovery Presented by scientists from the Virginia Museum of Natural History, join us for this exciting lecture highlighting the recent dinosaur dig in Wyoming in partnership with scientists and students from the University of Lynchburg. This program will also highlight the upcoming Dino Festival taking place at VMNH on July 26-27. Note: A display of dinosaur materials will be on display at NCI from July 2-3.
August 7 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm What Is Social Media All About? Social Media has become the new standard for communication. This first class is an overview class highlighting the basics for some of the most popular social media platforms including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and Snap Chat. Two more classes will be offered with a more in-depth focus on specific social media technologies, topics of Facebook, photo sharing, and storage.
July 10 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm Recipe for Success: Mindset + Motivation = Movement Janet Steward, Health Coach for Smart Body Dynamics, will teach you how mindset and motivation are the secret recipe to promote lifestyle changes and develop healthy habits. July 24 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm From Seed to Story: Cultivating a Love of Writing Nina Huff, a local educator, helps us find inspiration and discover ideas on how to express our voice and thoughts in the form of creative writing.
August 14 | 12:00 - 1:30 pm Facebook Fun (damentals) Does it feel like everyone you know is on Facebook? Aren't sure how to start? There's no need to be intimidated! This class will teach you more about terms associated with Facebook and its features, how to create an account, and how to send friend requests. Connect with lost classmates, make new friends, or connect with people who share similar interests. August 21 | 12:00 - 1:30 pm It's 2019, no need for a photo album! So you have a cell phone full of photos.... now what? Learn how to share photos from your phone and the top 5 Internet sites to use to store, print, edit, and share photos. This class will ensure you don't lose your photo memories and that you are able to share them!

2019 Life Learning Opportunities September 4 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm School Days - A Look Back at Our Schools of Yesteryear Local historian and archivist, Desmond Kendrick, will present the history of local schools in our area, from oneroom schoolhouses to modern, multi-classroom brick buildings and everything in-between. September 11 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. "Architecture is My Delight" This was famously quoted by Thomas Jefferson, and most notably during the forty-year construction of Monticello. Jefferson was known for his wideranging interests in the arts, sciences, and humanities. His most tangible legacy today, however, results from his love of architecture. This lecture by Peter Marshall will cover Jefferson's designs for his own homes, Monticello and Popular Forest; for the Virginia State Capitol, and for the University of Virginia, all of which have left a lasting influence on neo-classical forms across the United States. September 18 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Basic First Aid Training for Seniors Presented by Martinsville Fire & EMT professionals, learn the basics of treating minor bumps, cuts and bruises at home; how to recognize cardiovascular emergencies; heat and cold illnesses; and most importantly, knowing when to call 911.

September 21 | 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Mini-Health Fair Partnering with SOVAH and the MHC Coalition for Health & Wellness, drop by NCI on Saturday, September 21 to acquire healthcare information provided by various healthcare agencies, get free blood pressure checks, and much more. UVA's Mammography Bus will be on site, but appointments must be made in advance by contacting the Coalition at (276) 638-0787.
September 25 | 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. Fiber Art Project Local artist, Karen Despot, will demonstrate how to make pretty and practical woven fall coasters, by simple cardboard loom weaving. This is a wonderful project for beginners, and a fun gift idea! October 2 | 12:00 - 1:30 pm Life Care Planning Life Care Planning is a holistic, eldercentered approach to the practice of law that helps families respond to every challenge caused by chronic illness or disability of an elderly loved one. The goal of life care planning is to promote and maintain the good health, safety, well-being, and quality of life of elders and their family. This presentation, by staff members of the Estate & Elder Law Center of Southside Virginia, will detail how this works.
2019 LIFE Learning Opportunities October 16 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm Long-Term Care Ombudsman/ Virginia Insurance Counseling & Assistance Program (VICAP) Long-term care ombudsmen are advocates who resolve problems associated with those receiving long term care, including people in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, and for those receiving home health care in their homes. The VICAP program offers insurance counseling about Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare supplements and prescription drug plans. Attend this informative seminar where representatives from Southern Area Agency on Aging will explain how you can benefit from these services. October 23 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Cybersecurity for Seniors October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Attend this important session, presented by Adam Wright, of EMI Security, for tips on how to protect yourself from internet fraud, computer hackers, and viruses. October 29 | 10:00 am - 12:00 p.m. Basics of Geneaology In this two-hour session, learn how to trace your family roots with the assistance of local resources and local experts. Presented by Bassett Historical Center staff.
November 6 | 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. Finances After 50 Navigating your finances after 50 can bring a host of challenges and opportunities. Does your current budget support your goals and needs? Leveraging the Money Smart curriculum by the FDIC, experts from Carter Bank & Trust explore the topics relevant to mature adults who want to take charge of their financial wellness and make the rest of their life the best of their life.
