This lifelong learning initiative is made possible by the generous support of Barbara Matthews, a wonderful example of the pursuit of learning and wisdom. We invite you to participate in the various learning opportunities made available throughout the year - all of which are designed to engaging, enlightening, and interesting. Any adult is welcome to participate in our programs. There are no prerequisites to participate; and no fee to participate unless otherwise noted. All you need is an interest in sharing an educational experience. Every course is designed to foster lively, fun engagement with a focus on topics and resources available in Martinsville and Henry County. We hope you will find programs that fit your interests. April 2 & 16 | 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Tai Chi for Beginners Delivered by: Martinsville Family YMCA Instructor: Bill Moorefield Tai chi is an ancient Chinese form of meditation that consists of slow movements to allow complete relaxation. You will learn to focus on concentration, will power, flexibility, muscle strength, and balance.

April 5, 12, 19, & 26 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Insects & Human Society Delivered by: Virginia Museum of Natural History Group will meet at the VMNH each Thursday during the month of April to learn more about Entomology: what it is and why it’s important. Then enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum to include a tour of the labs and collection areas. This is an off-site opportunity. April 9 & 23 | 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Chair Aerobics Delivered by: Martinsville Family YMCA Instructor: Joyce Hankins Chair aerobics is a low impact cardio and strength training course that incorporates chair use to improve mobility. This session will include discussion with a healthcare professional as well as free screenings for melanoma to all who attend. August 1 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. A Village on Fayette: Oral History Film New College Institute is offering an encore presentation of the oral history film debuted in 2015. This film celebrates African-American culture and features personal accounts of the local history surrounding the Fayette Street community. Following the showing of the film, there will be time for discussion and reactions.
July 11 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Senior Resources: Your OneStop Shop Speaker: Donna Allen, Southern Area Agency on Aging Informative session on the many helpful resources available to area seniors such as home delivered meals, respite care, care coordination, transportation, and long-term care ombudsman, to name a few. Handouts will be provided. July 17 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Art Project for Beginners: A Simple Colored Pencil Drawing Instructor: Karen Despot, de Spot School of Art Create a beautiful, but simple drawing using colored pencils and with easy to follow instruction. Supplies provided. Class size limited to 25.

Let's Get Social! Social Media Series for Seniors 12:00 - 1:30 p. m. Instructor: Melany Stowe, Assistant Director of Academics & Communication at NCI You may register for individual sessions or the whole series! August 8: What is Social Media All About? Social media has become the new standard for communicating. The first class is an overview class highlighting the basics for some of the most popular social media technologies including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and Snap Chat. Three specialized classes will be delivered with a more in-depth focus on specific social media technologies. Adults are welcome to sign up for the overview course and as many of the in-depth courses as they are interested in.
Social media is a whole new way to connect with friends old and new! Learn how to create a profile, share photos, and more at our "Let's Get Social!" series.
August 15: Facebook... Yes, you can! Facebook is one of the best-known social networking sites and in 2017 the number of over 75's using social media nearly doubled. This class will teach you more about terms associated with Facebook and its features, how to create an account, and how to send friend requests. Prerequisite: Active email account August 22: Twitter... Yes, you can! #tweet Do you tweet? Know what a hashtag (#) is for? Learn how to join the conversation by sharing photos, videos, and short messages with other users around the world. Prerequisite: Active email account August 29: It's 2018, no need for a photo album! So you have a cell phone full of photos.... now what? Learn how to share photos from your phone and the top 5 Internet sites to use to store, print, edit, and share photos. This class will ensure you don't lose your photo memories and that you are able to share them! Prerequisite: Active email account

September 5 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Reach & Rise: A Mentoring Program Speaker: Terri Hairston, YMCA Program Director Do you have the heart and time to be a mentor to a young person? Mentoring is a proven strategy for positive youth development. Youth are more likely to succeed in life when they have the additional support of a caring, consistent adult mentor. Find out how to become involved in the future of our area youth. September 12 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. “Man’s Best Helper” Delivered by: Saint Francis Service Dogs of Roanoke The purpose of service dogs is to assist children and adults with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other disabling conditions. Saint Francis dog trainer, Ms. Jenny Cole, will discuss what it takes to train the dogs, and will present a demonstration.

Q&A opportunity will be provided. October 3 | 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. Life Care Planning Speakers: Cricket Haley and Laura Gall – The Estate & Elder Law Center of Southside Va. Life Care Planning is a holistic, elder-centered approach to the practice of law that helps families respond to every challenge caused by chronic illness or disability of an elderly loved one. The goal of life care planning is to promote and maintain the good health, safety, well-being, and quality of life of elders and their family. This presentation will detail how this service works.

October 24 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Service Learning & Community Involvement Speaker: City and County Officials Do you want to make a difference in your community? For many people, the ideal way to do that is to serve on a non-profit board. Serving on a board is a wonderful way to support a cause that you care about. At this information session, city and county officials will discuss various board opportunities and ways for you to get involved, and what you need to know to be an effective board member. November 14 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. What it Takes to Compete in an Ironman Speaker: Brad Kinkema, Director of YMCA An Ironman is a race that encompasses a 2.4mile open water swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Brad Kinkema will highlight the months of preparation, the mental strength, and the physical endurance required before race day.
Business Watch Series Dates TBD Throughout the year, the Martinsville Police Department will be providing several different forms of training for businesses to include topics such as: cyber security, counterfeiting, crime prevention, employee theft, fraud, and other related issues.
