ur front cover for this issue features Central Foods of Collingtree, Northamptonshire, who are one of our key trading partners and contributors. Family run by Gordon and Alison Lauder, we caught up with Gordon recently to find out his views on a number of topics and you can read his thoughts later in the issue. They have recently been accredited by the Living Wage Foundation for fulfilling the process whereby all staff – whether employed directly or contracted – will receive a minimum hourly wage of £10.20 in London and £8.75 elsewhere in the UK. After the hot summer recess, we are now back into the expo season with a number of exhibitions around the UK during this month including Lunch 2018 and the Restaurant and Takeaway Expo 2018 including Street Food Live at ExCel in London. These events are great opportunities to network and meet new contacts and to get fresh ideas on what is now available and what others are doing to grow their businesses. We can all find reasons not to go, but we can all learn so much from what we see in the exhibitions or even by taking time to walk around cities and towns and see what others are doing. Just one fresh idea may be the big idea that changes the way that you go about your own business. You are never too old and should never be too proud to think that you cannot learn new tricks. un by Gordon and Alison Lauder, Central Foods supplies fast food professionals across the UK with a wide range of products, including the well-known Golden Valley Foods poultry range which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Here, managing director Gordon Lauder tells us more

about the business and his personal likes. 1. Was there a light bulb moment that led you to the food industry? When I left school, I started working at a local supermarket, initially in the warehouse, then on the shop floor before becoming a manager and then regional manager. Later, I became a buyer and moved into product development…so you could say I’ve always been in the food industry in one form or another. Alison and I met at work, both working for the same food sector company. We have complementary skills and it has really helped us to develop Central Foods into the business it is today, along with the great team we have in place. 2. Biggest industry achievement/recognition to-date? Alison and I are very proud that Central Foods has Managing Director of Central Foods, Gordon Lauder.

It’s just been renewed, and we are delighted to say that we achieved accreditation at the highest grade – double AA. On a day to day basis, we’re also very proud to be helping so many fast food outlets and takeaways across the UK to serve great-tasting food. We love developing new products for menus and take immense satisfaction from hearing positive feedback from our customers, and indeed their customers! 3. What do you do to wind down outside of work? I’m pretty busy during the working week, but at weekends I like to run. It clears the mind and is the perfect time to think. 4. What has been the biggest change for your business over the last 5 years? The potential impact of Brexit has hung over us and has added to the uncertainty. It makes it very difficult to plan, when no-one seems to know what is happening. Technology has brought many positive changes for the business from the direct communication and marketing we can do via social media to the way we interact and support customers. There’s also been rapid growth in the development of new products for foodservice to take advantage of the latest food trends. For example, there are now many more gluten-free products available to make it easier for fast food professionals and takeaway outlets to serve really good quality items for those who need to

The eventual overall winner of the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year Competition will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards’ 31stanniversary ceremony in London on 24 January 2019.
