It’s Showtime!

W

e are now well into Exhibition season for the takeaway and QSR sectors with suppliers keen to show their new products and ideas to the trade, all against the backdrop of “will we or won’t we” be in the EU next year. This makes it very difficult for many of our suppliers who import products and equipment from the EU. One way or another, we really DO need an answer and a clear way forward. The process of deciding who are the best operators in the Fish and Chip world is well underway with shortlist being produced for the many categories. The same process is being carried out for other key sectors such as Pizza, Pasta, and Kebabs etc. Well done and good luck to all those who are in the running for these prestigious awards. Through this recognition, we are continually developing and improving our industry and the customer gets the benefits of this. Home delivery is a great way for businesses to reach new customers and there is ongoing development of products and equipment to facilitate this. Where it was once mainly the Asian operators who used home delivery, it is now used across the sector not just for home, but also to business premises, so much so that now it is possible to make a business work from just a kitchen. The world is changing fast and those operators that recognise this and develop with it will be the winners in the end. Thank you. Athol

Quayside is the Plaice to be for Local School Children

Pupils from West Cliff Primary School in Whitby recently paid a visit to one of the towns leading fish and chips restaurants and takeaways to find out about fish and seafood as part of Seafood Week 2019.

D

uring a visit to Quayside, owned by Fusco’s of Whitby, the Seahorse class was invited to learn about the various species of fish we eat and the different ways to cook them. The children were also told about

the importance of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification and sustainability. In addition, William Crooks from Dennis Crooks Fish Merchants held a live demonstration on how seafood should be handled and prepared. Stuart Fusco, Head of Quayside, also showcased the different species used at the restaurant, including squid, crab, gurnard, seabream, seabass, cod and haddock and how they are used to make different dishes, as well as fish and chips. Stuart Fusco, comments: “It was an absolute pleasure to host pupils from West Cliff Primary, who were all enthusiastic, eager to learn and asked some great questions about protecting the seas and how we work here at Quayside. Seafood Week is a great campaign that we are always happy to support and what better way than by helping to educate local children about the importance of sustainability and eating different types of fish more often.” During the school trip, the Year 4 class were also treated to a small portion of fish and chips each, as well as a goody bag from Quayside which featured an activity book, crayons and toys. Stuart adds: “We would like to offer a huge thank you to William Crooks for helping out during the visit and to MSC UK and Seafish for kindly donating gifts to support the goody bags, which the children were all delighted with. We would also like to say thank you to the teachers and staff at West Cliff School for making the trip possible.” Seafood Week is an annual, national campaign run by Seafish that celebrates the wide variety of fish and shellfish available in the UK. With a recommendation by the NHS to eat at least two portions of fish a week as part of a healthy diet, the aim of Seafood Week is to get more people consuming fish on a regular basis. Sizzling Success at National Awards Ceremony Blakemans, the UK’s leading sausage manufacturer is celebrating an award win from the National Racecourse Catering Awards which were held at Ascot Racecourse on Friday, October 4th 2019.

S

The partnership first began when Uttoxeter Racecourse

were looking for a sponsor and supplier for their popular Sausage and Cider Festival race day fixture. With a commitment to choose local, Newcastle Under Lyme based Blakeman’s was a natural choice for the racecourse. Following this initial success Blakeman’s relationship with the racecourse and the racing fraternity flourished, with the introduction of a pop-up BBQ tent and a branded food outlet grill in the betting hall at the course. Now more than 9,000 Premium Pork Hotdog sausages have been sold to race goers and with the introduction of the branded food outlet, have seen this product range increase with additions of meatballs, burgers and sausage whirls. “The Gourmet Grill Hotdog is a firm favourite with our customers” comments Brian Barass General Manager at Uttoxeter Racecourse “Although local to the racecourse, Blakeman’s are the UK’s leading sausage manufacturer and

We thank them unreservedly for their hard work and commitment in supplying quality food to our customers” continues Barass “We are delighted that James and the team have won this thoroughly deserved award – well done” Nominated for the award by the catering and hospitality team at Uttoxeter Racecourse, Blakeman’s were judged against five other finalists on the evening from across the UK before taking home the winning accolade. The National Racecourse Catering Awards is an annual event which celebrates catering achievements across the UK’s racecourses. James Morris, Head of Business at Blakeman’s commented “What a fantastic surprise to win a national award, we are truly delighted. We have forged a great relationship with Uttoxeter Racecourse and one we know will continue to flourish. We hope that the success of this win and the strength of our relationship, will open more opportunities to introduce our range of award-winning sausages to additional race courses and other sporting venues across the UK” continues Mr Morris. Jestic to preview 500˚C Sveba Dahlen pizza oven at The European, Pizza and Pasta Show Jestic Foodservice Equipment will be previewing the new Sveba Dahlen P601 High Temp pizza oven at The European, Pizza and Pasta Show (EPPS), 13-15 November at Olympia in London.

T

he P601 from Sveba Dahlen incorporates a genuine Neapolitan pizza stone and can achieve temperatures of up to 500˚C, meaning it can bake pizzas in 60 to 120 seconds.

The highly efficient heating system distributes heat in three

zones resulting in uniform baking, whilst the high level of insulation and exclusive ceramic glass in the doors mean the oven chamber retains heat more effectively and ensures a comfortable working environment. The user-friendly control panel on the P601 allows the user to regulate upper and lower heating separately and includes Turbo and Power-saving functions. Michael Eyre, Culinary Director at Jestic Foodservice Equipment comments: “Sveba Dahlen has been one of the world’s leading bakery oven manufacturers for over 65 years and the new P601 High Temp is yet another exciting innovation, which has been developed to bake pizzas at temperatures up to 500˚C. The P601 is ready to bake in just 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the preferred temperature and includes authentic pizza stones which have been developed in collaboration with Italian pizza bakers to help achieve the delicious rich flavour and airy crusts typical of Neapolitan pizzas.” The Sveba Dahlen P601 will be previewed on the Jestic Foodservice Equipment stand (29A) at EPPS, where visitors can also see cutting-edge technology and innovation from other world-class equipment manufacturers including Wood Stone, Edge, Alfa Pro, Somerset, Vitamix and Zio Pepe. In addition, Jestic is sponsoring the cooking stages at EPPS which will host the competitions for both The PAPA Pizza and Pasta Chef of the Year and the 2019 European Pizza Championships. The Sveba Dahlen P601 High Temp will be officially launched in the UK in February 2020. For further information on the Sveba Dahlen range or any of the other equipment exclusively distributed by Jestic, please call 01892 831 960 or visit www.jestic.co.uk. 40
