Painting directly from life, Emma has used her talent with colour in this new collection to express the joyfulness and beauty of the Cornish coastline in summer, with its bright umbrellas, dazzling waters, wildflowers and rich green palms. Figures, flowers and boats bring life to these deliberately pretty paintings, in which the summer rhythms of life in St Ives are framed against the simple shapes of sky, sea and sand. In addition, time spent painting in The Lighthouse Apartment at Crab Rock, located precisely on the water’s edge, has inspired works which capture the drama and colour of the harbour in winter.

“Looking out from Crab Rock is the most spectacular way to watch wave formations, and the sea colours created by the changing tide and weather. It is awe-inspiring to be right there, painting it first-hand in the middle of a Cornish winter. In midsummer, the beautiful stretch of coast path from Headland Road, which curves around the edge of Hawkes Point to Carbis Bay, is abundant with coastal plants, wildflowers and ferns which form a tropical tunnel that I felt compelled to paint.”
