JUDY BUXTON The shimmering, amorphous works of oil painter Judy Buxton have an ethereal quality. Her paintings of still lives, landscapes and her beloved horses are created alla prima and her energetic brushwork and atmospheric colours faithfully translate the fluidity of weather, light, and animal movement. Buxton’s truly beautiful paintings have a creative integrity born of considerable talent and originality. Painting straight to board in the outdoors, and from sketches whilst working on her large studio canvases, this collection of works draw on the landscape of the Lizard Peninsula: the raw beauty of Goohilly Downs, the tranquil waters of the Helford River and the rocky inlets of Poltesco. Her instinctive approach to painting, with brush, knife and fingers, captures the essence of her subject in real time. Elucidating the transient nature of light on shifting water, sand and windblown heath, her works exude a restless energy and express an intimate relationship between artist and subject.The seascapes in this collection have the rushing, vital power of coast and ocean, her equine drawings a flowing elegance and her still lives the glow and warmth of fleeting sunlight. Trained at Falmouth College of Fine Art and later a postgraduate student of the Royal Academy, Judy Buxton exhibits across the UK and her work is held in several major British collections. Having held her first ever St Ives show at New Craftsman nearly twenty years ago, this exhibition celebrates the work of one of West Cornwall’s foremost painters.
