SEASON BROCHURE

September 2016 – June 2017

PARTICIPATING & SUPPORTING COMPANIES

WELCOME! Full of returning favourites and new companies, this 2016/17 programme is New Diorama’s most exciting year of theatre to date. We are excited to welcome Rhum and Clay as our newest Associate Ensemble and to present the premiere of Testosterone. Breach Theatre are back with Tank, and Kandinsky, whose production Dog Show won a Peter Brook and an OffWestEnd Award, return with Still Ill, supported by Complicite. Manchester-based Box Of Tricks return with their stunning Plastic Figurines and new show Narvik. Spring sees Lost Watch present their World War Two-inspired Flew The Coop, and Engineer Theatre Collective’s The Gap In The Light is the much anticipated follow-up to their multi-award nominated show, Run. Among the new companies are Fight In The Dog, presenting two shows, both written by two-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Liam Williams. Travesty transfers from the Edinburgh Festival, and Ricky Whittington & His Cat will be our first-ever pantomime! Our unique Artist Development Programme, launched this year, described as “the most exciting artist development scheme Britain has ever seen”, will continue to support theatre ensembles from all over the country. Our thriving community programme, made possible by our Principal Supporter, British Land, has received a boost from the Evening Standard’s Estate Fund. We have worked with local partners to start Camden Youth Theatre, who will perform their first show, We Wanted To Be The Sky, at New Diorama in early 2017. Alongside our highly successful captioning programme, this season we are introducing relaxed performances, making New Diorama the only studio theatre in the country to be offering relaxed performances across a season for adult audiences. None of what we do here would be possible without your support and enthusiasm, thank you! We look forward to welcoming you in 2016/17. See you in the bar!

“English, all the time! Don’t even think in your own language.” In 1965, a researcher lived with a dolphin for ten weeks to try and teach him to speak English – part of a NASA-funded research project into humananimal communication. Condemned by the wider scientific community as an elaborate circus trick, the experiment remains a controversial episode in the space race between the two Cold War superpowers. Commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre, Breach’s followup to critically acclaimed multimedia show THE BEANFIELD explores the politics of language, the power of culture – and what happens when you inject a cetacean with LSD. STILL ILL As common on neurology wards as MS, Functional Neurological Disorder looks and feels like a problem with the workings of the brain. Sufferers experience disabling symptoms that range from tremors to seizures and from blindness to paralysis, all with no physical cause. With three actors and live music, STILL ILL looks at the search for meaning that follows a difficult diagnosis – and how it feels to be told there’s nothing physically wrong with you when your brain is telling you you’re sick. Following the success of Dog Show in autumn 2015, STILL ILL is the new show from Kandinsky, exploring the unsettling world of the undiagnosable. Kandinsky is a theatre company with a national and international reputation. Previous productions have twice won the Sunday Times Playwriting Award and been shortlisted for the Carol Tambor Award; most recently Dog Show won the Peter Brook Festival Award 2015 and the OffWestEnd Award for Best Ensemble.

TESTOSTERONE With an adoption of a gender comes a history. One year after his first injection of testosterone, trans man Kit is perceived completely as a man. However, with this triumph comes a crisis of masculinity; what kind of man is he? Within the confines of a distorted male changing room he confronts three icons of masculinity: a sports star, a drag queen, a Marlon Brando impersonator and, ultimately, himself. He bonds, he fights, and he struggles on a quest to discover what it means to feel ‘100% male’. Critically acclaimed Rhum and Clay (Hardboiled and 64 Squares) return with an explosive collaboration with theatre maker Kit Redstone exploring everything that makes us who we are and what we want to be.

The Rauchbach Greasley Association Society Club (RGASC, for short) will tell you all about it. They have a shared obsession with their two national heroes, a fierce pride in their country and only five members. Not that that’s going to stop them. OUR 2016/17 ARTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME New Diorama is the first ever companies’ theatre: a theatre exclusively dedicated to the development of emerging theatre ensembles. Working with the best early-career theatre companies from all over the UK, New Diorama help grow both the artistic work and the organisational, business skills of each group we programme. Our current artist development programme is our most ambitious to date. When we opened six years ago we wanted to find ways of overcoming the many challenges and hurdles early-career theatre companies face. Our new programme tackles many of these issues head on, finding new solutions to old problems and presenting completely new ideas that we’re proud to be pioneering for the first time. At New Diorama, we provide a whole range of support, from paying the small entry fee for the National Student

Drama Festival for those who otherwise couldn’t afford it to providing interest free cash-flow loans to help get ambitious projects off the ground. We also give grants to exceptional emerging female artistic directors or producers, allowing them to access leadership training, and run crash courses in budgeting, fundraising and everything else a new theatre company needs to get off the ground. Furthermore, we offer travel grants so our artists can be inspired by work happening abroad. And that’s just for starters! To see our full list of artist development opportunities visit www.newdiorama.com/artist-support. If you’d like to support the work we do with artists, or find out more, please email artists@newdiorama.com or call the theatre office on 020 7916 5467.
