WELCOME! This season marks our third year anniversary here at New Diorama Theatre and what a three years it’s been! Over the last three years we’ve welcomed over 50,000 audience members through our doors, had shows transfer nationally and several times now, internationally. We’ve won Peter Brook Awards with two of our NDT Associate Companies as well as an OffWestEnd Award for being Central London’s ‘Most Welcoming Theatre’. We’re proud that we’re dedicated to doing things as best we can, for example we’re currently the only unfunded theatre to pay our interns and this April we held our first captioned performance – something we’re planning to roll out across this whole season. One of our proudest moments of the last three years was being named Mayor of Camden’s Charity 2012/13, for the work we do locally with our community. None of this would have been possible without the help and guidance of our board of trustees, our Prinicple Supporter British Land and the faith of the charitable trusts and foundations that make the vital work we do here possible. This season we’ve got a mix of returning New Diorama favourites with inspiring and ambitious work, alongside new companies sourced from all over the UK. One of the most exciting developments for this season are our partnerships with IdeasTap and A Younger Theatre. Both these partnerships will open up the resources of New Diorama up to the youngest theatre companies, giving them space to showcase their work as well as providing essential mentoring and professional development. I hope you find something in the season that catches your interest and we look forward to welcoming you, Team NDT

THE MAN IN THE MOONE

New Diorama Theatre & PIT present their Les Enfants Terribles Prize winning show at the Edinburgh Festival.

New Diorama Theatre Associate Company, Idle Motion are taking their new show inspired by Bletchley Park to the festival.

NDT favourites Rhum and Clay present their new show at the Fringe before transfering back to NDT in September.

Alan Conway: failed businessman and unsuccessful homosexual decides his life might improve if he just tells people he’s award-winning film director Stanley Kubrick. What could possibly go wrong?

This stunning piece of visual theatre tells the story of Bletchley Park and the untold secrets of the remarkable men and women who cracked the enigma code.

Dreaming of a better life, a man abandons everything he knew and embarks on an epic journey towards the moon. It takes him from the neon smog of the city, to the heights of a treacherous mountain and beyond.

Frenetic, funny, absurd, unnecessary, stupid, unbelievable (and totally true) – Kubrick3 delights in the complexities of a compulsive fantasist in this ridiculous comic play. Co-produced by Greenwich Theatre and Fraser-Cannon Productions. Playing Pleasance Two, Pleasance Courtyard throughout the festival @ 19:10.

Total Theatre Award nominated Idle Motion will take you back to 1940s England, to the eccentric country house whose grounds, filled with chess champions, Oxbridge graduates and young debutantes, was the melting pot of Britain’s greatest minds. Playing Zoo Southside throughout the festival @ 17:05.

Rhum and Clay weaves myth, absurd humour and their unique visual style into a darkly comic and sublimely ridiculous tale about our insatiable desire to venture into the unknown. Playing Pleasance Above, Pleasance Courtyard throughout the festival @ 15:50.

UNCANNY VALLEY

As well as working on a variety of productions here at New Diorama Theatre Rich Rusk is Associate Director of Gecko.

We have been excited for a long time, about Superbolt Theatre, make sure you see their new show at the Fringe.

Critically acclaimed physical dance theatre company Gecko, present another visually stunning, visceral, physical performance.

Imagine total gender freedom, where changing sex is as easy as getting dressed. Sons can become daughters, husbands can become wives and blind dates could be either. A new play from Fat Git Theatre and Joe White.

Wilson is trapped. The city leaves him lost between the lines. Until the moment he discovers Her. Eyes light up, connections are made and deep inside a dormant chest a battery heart starts beating.

As the boundaries blur, where will curiosity take you? An irreverent, genejuggling, biopunk vision of a planet and its specie in disarray.

Using powerful movement and absurd humour to tell the electric love story of a man and a robot, step into a canyon where everything is possible and reality surpasses your greatest dreams.

Playing Jack Dome, Pleasance Dome throughout the festival @ 12:10

Playing The Underbelly, Bristo Square, throughout the festival @ 12:25

Missing is a journey into the depths of a person’s psyche: as Lily unearths her forgotten past the truth changes everything. Enter a deliciously warped Gecko world of striking imagery, multiple languages and beautiful music. Playing The Grand, Pleasance Courtyard throughout the festival @ 12:00, 13:00 & 15:00 (check fringe website for times)

SPECIE

TRANSFERRED DIRECT FROM PLEASANCE, EDINBURGH Fat Git Theatre presents an irreverent, gene-juggling, biopunk vision of a planet and its specie in disarray. Imagine a world of total gender freedom, where changing sex is as easy as getting dressed. Sons can become daughters, husbands can become wives, and blind dates could be either. While a bizarre, confused counterculture embraces this addiction to change, a small family confronts the problem of its unwanted daughter. Blending underground funk-based sound design with vivid new writing, Specie is a free-form new play from Fat Git Theatre and Joe White, composed in interlocking narratives over a family’s lifetime, offering a cross section of gender in decay. This production is supported by the New Diorama Emerging Companies Fund.

Sunday 29 - Monday 30 September

HOW TO START A RIOT Why were some parts of the UK set alight in 2011, whilst many others were left untouched? Who is present at a riot? If the actions are ‘mindless’, what’s in the mind? Three performers use text and torchlight to unpick the presumed causes of civil unrest. Based on the work of leading crowd and social psychologists Professor Stephen Reicher and Dr. Clifford Stott, How to Start a Riot seeks answers to questions ignored in the post-riot political rhetoric - rhetoric which has remained remarkably similar for centuries. CHILD SOLIDERS By Jack Thorne

“WHERE DO THEY FIND THEIR BEST CHANCE OF SURVIVAL IN PEACE OR IN WAR?” Tuesday 15 - Saturday 26 October

LIKE ENEMIES OF THE STATE A thought-provoking and visually engaging play based on the real-life stories of three child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Having escaped one of the world’s deadliest wars, they find themselves alienated from society and forced to live as outcasts. They, amongst many others, are facing a difficult decision: either retreat into poverty and social rejection or to take power into their own hands by rejoining the battle.

CREATED BY BEFRANK THEATRE TICKETS £12.50 / £10 (conc) Tue 15 - Sat 26 Oct @ 19:30 Sat matinees @ 15:30 No shows Sundays & Mondays

In the summer of 2011, Writer/Director Tommy Lexen traveled through the DRC to meet with child soldiers, street children, local and international NGOs, UN representatives and the Congolese government in an attempt to understand the reasons behind why so many children still are fighting in the war. ‘Like Enemies of the State’ is based upon these eyewitness accounts. It is their story, a story about the violence of a forgotten generation.

THEBES

PART OF THE FACTION’S 2014 REP SEASON From Oedipus to Antigone, the story of Thebes remains a fascinating exploration of fate, morality and chaos, two and a half thousand years after the saga was originally written. The first domino falls as Oedipus realises he has unwittingly fulfilled a cruel and unusual prophecy. As control of Thebes is handed to Creon, his sons fight each other for the kingdom and his daughter Antigone is determined to serve the honour of her family to the bitter end. Reuniting Associate Director Rachel Valentine Smith and writer Gareth Jandrell following their sell out success of Lorca’s Blood Wedding, this world premiere version weaves together Sophocles and Aeschylus to present the full, visceral and bloody account of the Oedipus dynasty. We have entrance level access with the auditorium, café/bar and accessible toilet all on this level. Please call the theatre office 0207 916 5467 or email us on hello@newdiorama.com and we’ll be more than happy to help with any requirements. When booking tickets please mention that you require a wheelchair space so we can find the best seat for you. Concessionary priced tickets are offered to disabled and deaf patrons for all performances, subject to availability. We extend these prices to their carers. Please contact the theatre office on 0207 916 5467 or email hello@newdiorama.com.
