Flying Solo Season all theatre starts here
Photography by Richard Davenport
Welcome The Flying Solo Season is a very special season for us here at New Diorama: it marks the first year anniversary of our first full season launch. And what a year it’s been! In our first year we welcomed over 15,000 audience members to see some really exciting theatre here at NDT. Not only were we overwhelmed by the warm reaction we’ve received from artists and audiences but we were stunned to win a prestigious Peter Brook Award with associate ensemble Third Party, pictured opposite. This season is a real treasure trove of emerging and established artists - all mixed together to thrill and excite you. We really hope you find something here that you’ll enjoy and you’ll write to us to tell us what you think. Please keep an eye on our website for any last minute one-off performances and we really hope we’ll see you soon! Yours, Team NDT.
P.S If you’re on twitter, tweet us @newdiorama - we really love tweeting back...

WAITING FOR IKEA Chrissie and Jade spend their days waiting; waiting for the postman, waiting for the kettle to boil and waiting for Coronation Street. They won’t shop in Argos ‘cos we’re waiting for IKEA’. Set in the heart of ‘new’ Dublin, Pimlico flats is akin to ‘Cheers’, everybody knows your name, your business, your record and what you’re having for dinner. Nothing much changes in Pimlico, each day begins and ends the same; it’s what happens in between that keeps the neighbours interested. The only current affairs these girls are interested in is whether Mrs. Dignam is having it off with Gunner Eye Gilby. A heart-warming story of friendship, family, community and sunbed obsessives, Waiting for IKEA will tickle your funny-bone with its unforgettable characters and colourful language. “I loved it...if you want to escape from the doom and gloom then this is the show for you.” Róisín Ingle, The View “Sheerin and Mc Kevitt inhabit their roles with credibility. FOOTPRINTS UNDER THE PAVEMENT A stroll around the stories and streets of West Euston Cows in the road, bombs in the sky, revolution at the roundabout, a factory in flames, a canal beneath the allotments, a lottery to come to the UK, dancing all night, an enormous pat of butter – and love on a motorbike. Two trainee tour guides take you on a walk around the local area, uncovering the people and stories who lived there in years gone by, as collected through interviews with local residents. But what starts as a lovely tour is soon interrupted by the ghost of comedian, actor and ex-local resident Kenneth Williams. Has anyone seen his house? There’s a skyscraper in his kitchen, and strangers in the living room! Things ain’t what they used to be round here...

“Brave, intelligent and desperately moving. Pascal’s play puts a human face on the misery of history. She also does it in such a way that it is never sentimental but possesses a Brechtian austerity. The faceless become individuals here. This is a dense, enlightening evening that packs a real punch” The Guardian (The Woman In The Moon) “A tense and stirring piece of theatre” The Times (Theresa)

TWELFTH NIGHT By William Shakespeare
“If music be the food of love, play on” A visually inventive and physical approach to Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy, this boisterous new production launches the faction theatre co.’s ambitious Rep Season. For seven weeks at the beginning of 2012, the faction – an Associate Ensemble of the New Diorama – will take up residency in the building with a single company of actors presenting Twelfth Night in repertory with Mary Stuart and Miss Julie. The intelligent and resourceful Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are separated during a shipwreck, each believing the other is dead. Disguising herself as a boy to serve in the court of Duke Orsino, Viola is sent on a mission to woo the Countess Olivia on his behalf. But Olivia falls desperately in love with Viola’s alter ego.

MARY STUART
By Schiller. In a new version by Daniel Millar & Mark Leipacher
“With the Queen I share my blood, my rank, my sex. With her alone as a cousin, a sovereign, a woman, may I talk of freedom.” The faction ensemble introduces Mary Stuart into the Rep Season following their blistering success of Schiller’s The Robbers at the New Diorama last year. A political prisoner is accused of religious extremism, incitement of war and masterminding assassination. She has been retrospectively charged with a law that was invented specifically for her. She has been denied access to witnesses and found guilty by a jury – but not a jury of her peers. That would be impossible; her only peer is Queen Elizabeth I. This presents Elizabeth with a terrifying dilemma: to reign in fear for the rest of her life or to have her cousin and fellow queen executed.

MISS JULIE
By Strindberg. In a new version by Emily Juniper “We must handle this sensibly – like cold blooded people” On a sultry midsummer night, the young and wilful Miss Julie has caused a stir by dancing at a party in the servants’ quarters. She is ferociously attracted to the intelligent and experienced Jean, her father’s footman. Their battle of the sexes rapidly escalates from flirtatious contest to a dangerous need for control in Strindberg’s masterpiece of class, lust, and power. The faction introduces Miss Julie into the repetory with Twelfth Night and Mary Stuart as their final production of the Rep Season. In addition to the three main productions, the faction will present a series of supplementary events, please visit www. thefaction.org.uk for further details.
