Hello, Hello... This season of work is full of brilliant theatre companies from all over the country making work at NDT to entertain and delight you. Last season we were proud to have won our second Peter Brook Award with NDT Associate the faction theatre co and even prouder that all the productions were met with enthusiastic four and five star reviews from national critics and bloggers alike. But we think this season is going to be even better! We’re very excited to announce three new initiatives this season that will support emerging theatre companies here at NDT – more details of which can be found at the back of this brochure. If you are a group making work and would like to work with us, please get in touch: we anticipate that 2012 is going to be the year things really ignite here at NDT and we want as many people to be involved as possible. We’re also thrilled to offer a mix of returning artists and brand new companies this season presenting a range of distinct and fresh work, solely for your enjoyment. So have a flick through our upcoming shows and events and we look forward to seeing you in the audience soon. Yours, Team NDT.

TWELFTH NIGHT By William Shakespeare “If music be the food of love, play on” Intelligent and resourceful Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are separated during a shipwreck, each believing the other is dead. Disguising herself as a boy to serve in the court of Duke Orsino, Viola is sent on a mission to woo the Countess Olivia on his behalf. But Olivia falls desperately in love with Viola’s alter ego. A visually inventive and physical approach to Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy, this boisterous new production launches the faction theatre co.’s ambitious Rep Season.

MARY STUART
By Schiller. In a new version by Daniel Millar & Mark Leipacher “With the Queen I share my blood, my rank, my sex. With her alone as a cousin, a sovereign, a woman, may I talk of freedom.” A political prisoner is accused of religious extremism, incitement of war and masterminding assassination. She has been retrospectively charged with a law that was invented specifically for her. She has been denied access to witnesses and found guilty by a jury – but not a jury of her peers. That would be impossible; her only peer is Queen Elizabeth I. This presents Elizabeth with a terrifying dilemma: to reign in fear for the rest of her life or to have her cousin and fellow queen executed. The faction ensemble introduces Mary Stuart into the Rep Season following their blistering success of Schiller’s The Robbers at NDT last year.

SCOOTER THOMAS MAKES IT TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD Coupled each night with a brand new piece of writing. We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of our dear friend Scooter Thomas, a misguided waif, whose only route to happiness was to shoot Puffins, tend sheep in Yugoslavia, or failing that, to fall off some mountain in California and die. Join Scooter and his best friend Dennis as they go back over the years to see if Scooter ever did make it to the top of the world. Peter Parnell’s undiscovered masterpiece is an energetic and honest two-hander, which shows us that even after death it’s still not too late to learn something about yourself, or the value of having and being a good friend. Each night you will also be treated to a little preview of new writing as part of All The Pigs First-Time-Writer’s Initiative: finding artists who have never written for the stage. Come and see what happens when you let your conscience do the talking; do you choose to relive ‘that’ fantasy or learn that a fire doesn’t necessarily burn all the evidence?

DEATH SONG Death Song is the story of a Mexican immigrant facing execution on death row in Nevada, USA in the early nineties.
Creative Team
Seven years earlier, Juan and his fifteen year old daughter Paulina are living alone on a trailer park south of Las Vegas, where the claustrophobic relationships that will lead to tragedy are forming.
Performances
Death Song moves between past and present; between the hot, static and synthetic spaces of the trailer park and the close confines of the prison cell, as Juan’s desperation to escape his fate, reaches fever pitch. With a live original soundtrack, and performed by a cast of Puerto Rican, Basque, Catalan and English actors, Death Song is a tense, electric piece of theatre, that brings the elegant storytelling skill and deep humanity of You Need Me’s previous work, to a complex and dangerous story of cultural alienation.

NDT SUPPORT Our mission here at NDT is to support, host and develop the work of emerging and established theatre companies. This season we’re proud to launch three new strands to our support that we think will make a huge difference to the artists we’re working with. These schemes wouldn’t happen without the help of individual supporters who back our work and the artists we encourage. If you’re a theatre company who’d like to come and work with us or you’d like to talk to us about how you might help support us, please send an email to NDT Artistic and Executive Director, David Byrne, on david@newdiorama.com. Artistic Director’s Fund – a fund supported by individual donors, that enables us to invest in emerging theatre companies. This season the fund is supporting production costs for several companies as well as providing everything from Press Agents to photographers to enhance the work of artists presenting at NDT. NDT Emerging Companies Programme – this season we pilot our first course aimed specifically at growing young theatre companies. Over a number of sessions, theatre-professionals will mentor emerging theatre companies on a host of topics – providing these groups with vital guidance and contacts. This bespoke programme is the first of its kind and more details can be found on our website. Space and Time Week – to further our dedication to developing new work we are offering a full week in this next season to supporting the creation and development of a new piece of theatre. This first week, scheduled for June, has been gifted to new NDT Associate Company Idle Motion. For details of how to apply to use a Space and Time Week for your company please visit our website.
