New Eastside Facts – Did you know? • New Eastside is built on landfill, hence the name “new.” The Loop’s eastern boundary used to be Michigan Avenue. • The approximate residential population of New Eastside is 11,000. Annual residential turnover is 32.42% and only 17.43% of residents have lived here for five years or more. • You might think the Signature Room restaurant on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Center is the highest restaurant in Chicago but you can dine some 40 feet higher right here in the New Eastside at the Mid America Club located in the Aon Center, if you can get an invitation that is. • Lakeshore Drive used to lie on the west side of the 400 E. Randolph condominium buildings. The Drive was relocated to its current position in the mid 1980’s.

Maggie Daley Park Update
DOORMAN OF THE MONTH
By – Bob O’Neill | President, Grant Park Conservancy Here is the latest and greatest on Maggie Daley Park. A little over ten percent of the trees are in. We are targeting a November soft opening, but the official opening will be early June 2015. There will still be some plantings that will be installed in spring 2015. Work is still being done around the ice ribbon and much progress is being made with the placement of the stone sub-base and the insulation and reinforcement bar being installed. The area is also being prepared for plumbing installation. Geo-foam work is mainly south to focus on the areas at the children’s play garden. The play ship and harbor play structures and the nest swings are installed on The play structure installation in the new the site. Soil fill is still being put down Maggie Daley Park. Randolph Elevator / Garage Shortcut to Monroe Now Open By – North Harbor Tower management To get across Maggie Daley Park to the remainder of Grant Park, a good alternative route is to take the elevator on Upper E. Randolph (across from 360 E. Randolph St.) to the LOWER level of the garage. Then walk 900 feet south through the newly renovated garage all the way to the stairway up to Monroe and Lake Shore Drive. Even after Maggie Daley Park is opened, this would be a good route, especially during inclement weather. The garage is well lighted, clean and an emergency phone is available about every 60 feet to the garage patrol team. The garage is well used during the work week, and during the summer when the Monroe Harbor boaters use it more often. You can even walk southwest through the garage entry under Middle Columbus St. and up the elevator in Millennium Park (across from the Art Institute).

Fred Crocker has worked at the Shoreham at 400 E. South Water Street since it opened 8 years ago. He has worked for the same company (Near North Properties, now part of Magellan Development Group) for 28 years, always as a doorman. – By Ophelia Dodds What do you like best about your job? I love the opportunity to change someone’s day by making them smile. A morning greeting can make all the difference. I also love to meet new people. Describe yourself in three words: Funny, friendly, humble. What techniques do you use to help you remember names and faces? I am fortunate to have a gift with names. If I am told a name once, I can remember it weeks later. What changes have you noticed in the area since you have been here? A change in the crowd - there are many more kids now and a much younger crowd. There are more trees and more color in the park as it’s grown. What is your top tip for the city? I’ve always wanted to go to the Skydeck in the Willis Tower, but I’m afraid of heights. I would love to take that challenge someday. What is the nicest thing a resident has said to you or done for you? After I helped one resident out of a cab, she gave me an envelope “to open at home”. When I opened it, out of the card fell $600 cash! That was an amazing gift. Too much, but really appreciated. To nominate your doorperson, info@neweastsidecommunity.com

When should I call 311 vs. 911?
Calling 311 allows you easy access to non-emergency police services, from filing police reports to talking to police personnel in your district. You should call 311 if the incident that you are reporting has occurred and the offender is gone from the scene. You should call 911 if the incident you are reporting is in progress and the presence of a police officer is necessary to help resolve the matter (e.g., burglary, incident involving injuries, quieting loud neighbors, etc.). – Source: www.cityofchicago.org

Spotlight on New Eastside crossings and intersections -By Elaine Hyde Residents have notified New Eastside Community of several areas in our neighborhood where pedestrians and drivers should exercise care. -By Elaine Hyde | Editor
New Eastside is bordered by Michigan Avenue to the west, Lake Michigan to the east, Randolph Street to the south and the Chicago River to the north. Source: Google Maps.
(1) Intersection of Upper N. Columbus Dr. and South Water St. There are 24 different ways traffic can traverse this intersection in front of Aqua at 225 N. Columbus Drive. There are no traffic lights at this junction. Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing or wait until the intersection is mostly clear.
(5) River Walk, Lakefront Trail and the surrounding public parks At night, these areas can be isolated. The Lakeshore East Park and other public parks and walkways are open 6AM 11PM. General safety guidelines should be followed, such as walking in groups, or using paths that are more populated and have better lighting.
(2) Intersection of Sub Lower Wacker Dr. and N. Field Blvd. The entrance to the Chicago Auto Pound, Lakeshore East Park, and South River Walk are located here. Moving vans and construction vehicles often use this intersection. The intersection is poorly lit, and has unclear crossing marks and traffic signage.
(6) New Eastside Pedway This is a mostly safe and well-lit route. It is safest to use the Pedway during peak hours or walk with a partner or friend if you need to use it at night. (Insert pedway hours). New Eastside Pedway Aqua access route hours are Mon – Fri 6:30AM – 9PM, Saturday 6:30AM – 6PM, Sunday closed.
(3) Lower E. Randolph St. Pedestrians use lower Randolph as a connection to the Millennium Station during inclement weather. It is no longer the hang-out for the homeless that it used to be, however, it is not well-lit and rarely do street sweepers (and sidewalk sweepers) attempt to clean these lower-level roadways bordering the New Eastside area.
(7) Lakefront Trail The shared bicycle and pedestrian path often gets crowded and there are sections that are under construction related to the Navy Pier flyover (a safer pedestrian and bike path).
(4) Intersection of Michigan Ave. & Randolph St. One of the busiest intersections in Chicago is flush with tourists and hurried office workers. Turning vehicles should expect pedestrians who are unfamiliar with the intersection to enter it when the left turn signal is displayed and the vehicles have the right-of-way.
(8) Middle Columbus Dr. Middle Columbus pedestrian walk does not connect south to Adams Street. Access Middle Columbus Bridge by using elevators in one of the Columbus Drive towers to get to bridge level or use the stairs at the River Walk.

Managing Noise in the New Eastside By Ophelia Dodds | Staff writer I will be the first to admit that I’m more than a little obsessive about my sleep. Clearly, living in high-rise buildings you are subject to noise from neighbors, it comes with the territory. For the most part, people are sensible and turn off their music at a reasonable time, and building management will give a gentle warning if necessary.
events are organized through the CPD and others through the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Our Alderman, Brendan Reilly, has input to all of these events. Any issues or complaints about events, road closures, disturbances, liquor licenses or other areas where the neighborhood might be adversely affected, can be reported to the Alderman, who in turn works with these groups to deal with any issues going forward.
Chicago noise ordinance: what are the rules and regulations? Chicago has adopted a very stringent noise ordinance (11-4-2800), which can be read in full on their website at www.cityofchicago.org In Summary: • No person on the public way can use a device that makes noise at a level louder than average conversational level to a distance of 100 feet. • No person on any private open space can make any amplified sound at a level louder than average conversational level to a distance of 100 feet between the hours of 10:00pm and 8:00am.

Managing Everyday Risk
What are your biggest risk exposures and how can they be mitigated? By David Jenk, Attorney at Law | Executive Director, Northwest Insurance Brokers
Being properly insured is beneficial for pragmatic reasons and for financial reasons. Simple everyday activities can pose a number of risks that go largely unnoticed. Northwest Insurance Brokers has teamed up with New Eastside community to provide a no cost Insurance Review to help ensure you or your business is adequately and properly covered in case a claim does arise. Something as obvious as salting outside your storefront helps mitigate claims. Or if you own a business where heavy items are being lifted, enumerating proper steps for lifting items will help to prevent losses from occurring in the first place. Maybe your biggest risk exposures are your automobile or home. Are your liability limits sufficient to protect you in the event of a large loss? Maybe you rent an apartment and forgo a renter’s policy, what if a water leak occurs, would you want to pay for the costs out of pocket? In any case, insurance is only helpful to the extent that you are adequately covered given your respective needs and exposures. Are your insurance policies in line with your needs? An Insurance Review will determine all of these questions and expose gaps in coverage that could lead to a devastating loss. A Review can also help to prevent claims from ever occurring by helping to identify risks that may be overlooked.
