Spring planting in the LOOP -By Elaine Hyde | Editor

Soon the first signs of spring in the city parks will lift spirits and the Arctic tundra will become a thing of the past as we rediscover flowers, color and freedom. Each year the Lakeshore East Park is transformed by a team of volunteers from a flattened slushy mess, into a breathtakingly fragrant, and perfectly eye popping flower and garden show in what some residents consider their backyard. But achieving such beauty takes planning. “We did a lot of prep in the fall to make this spring extra special, which considering all this snow will be a welcome surprise,” says Dan Koz, a resident in New Eastside who heads volunteer efforts in the Park. The 4.6-acre Lakeshore East Park is part of the award winning Lakeshore East development. It has a gated children’s playground and splash pad, a dog park, water fountains and a large open field. Home to myriad events, including movies in the park, business fairs and fitness classes, the Park’s greatest achievement is bringing the New Eastside community together. (Turn to Park, Page 4.)
