How has NZMA helped your career so far?
How did you find NZMA? I’ve always wanted to work in the customer service industry, and I really enjoy the bar, café, restaurant atmosphere. I had some work experience in Singapore and Malaysia, before I decided to come to New Zealand for my future career and life. To further my skills and to gain an official qualification, I enrolled in the Hospitality course at NZMA and began learning practical and management skills.
Students and graduates get free employment support through NZMA Careers, and each year they host huge Careers Fairs – the perfect way to meet potential employers and find jobs. NZMA has partnerships with many of NZ’s top employers, who come straight to our school when they want the best hospitality staff! I got a job with Vital Hospitality through last year’s Careers Fair. This was really good for me because it was my first hospitality job with a local company and it really helped improve my English. Now I’m working

for SKYCITY which is awesome.
It was great. I found the programme to be both challenging and easy.
What was learning at NZMA like?
In this industry there are some common sense skills you already have. But the tutors really helped and explained different ways of doing things, and also how to deal with customers. The opportunities at NZMA are great too. I competed in the NZChefs, Salon last year and won a gold medal in the bar tender training competition. I was really proud of that! What's next for you? The Careers Team, especially Sam, has been fantastic to help find me work. For over a year, I worked at the Alexandra Park Bar, near the racecourse in Auckland. And now I have been given the opportunity of a great new job at SEN, a Vietnamese restaurant in Mount Eden, where I can work, and build my skills and experience. They’ve really helped where they can. Now that I’m just about to graduate, I’m hoping to go from casual at SEN to more hours and gain additional experience, not only around the bar area, but into restaurant management as well. So my end goal is to be a restaurant manager – so I’m on the way!
NZMA is like your New Zealand family. Everyone is very friendly and encouraging, and it’s a fun, supportive learning environment. It’s very multicultural – all cultures are respected and celebrated. My classmates come from all over the world, including Korea, India, New Zealand and China. The facilities at NZMA Sylvia Park are really good – we have a student-run café, a bar, restaurant, barista training room and several commercial kitchens, so it’s like a real workplace environment. Classes are small and the tutors all come direct from industry so they know their stuff! What has been a highlight of your time at NZMA? NZMA students have the chance to test their skills against industry professionals through competitions such as the prestigious NZChefs National Salon. Last year I entered two events in this competition – Innovative Cocktails and Classic Cocktails. I won gold medals and Best in Show for both! I learnt so much from training for, and competing in, this event. Plus the awards look great on my CV! What's next for you? My goal now is to build on my career in the hospitality industry – I really feel like I’ve found my niche.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Why did you choose NZMA to study Cookery?
I’m from China. Back home I gained a Bachelor degree in English
NZMA was the only college that offered me a full time study course,
and after working for two years I decided I wanted to experience
and an internship offer. As I had been working in the industry I
something new, so I came to New Zealand on a working holiday

then started working in Auckland. I’d been wanting to experience a different style of education and gain some business knowledge, so

to success. Plus, I had the opportunity to reflect on learnings by working with some of the best known chefs in the city during events.
Why did you choose NZMA? NZMA is quite well-known amongst private schools, and their course schedule was convenient for me – it enabled me to balance work, life and study! How has NZMA helped you get a great job? One thing I really appreciate about NZMA is that its Careers Team provides an excellent service to students. They gave me the opportunity to experience working in an office here, helped me with my CV and encouraged me to be more confident. After about five months of studying at NZMA, I was offered a job as a sales assistant at Pandora Sylvia Park. This job is related to what I am learning at NZMA. Most of the time, the questions I have from work get answered during class. This develops my business knowledge and builds up my confidence. It makes me believe that I can achieve even more in the future.
This was a great insight to this industry. What were the tutors like? There are many tutors from different backgrounds and this brings a huge amount of exposure, learning opportunities, experience and also provides a very safe and rich environment to learn and grow. Where has this course led you to now? This course has given my career a great knowledge boost, exposure and the opportunity to develop myself in New Zealand, and achieve lots of success as a Chef. However, I believe learning never ends no matter what designation or company you work for, but I’ve certainly added plenty of knowledge through this course. Coming from India, and then during my studies I worked my way up from Commis Chef at The Quadrant, to the Chef de Partie at The Brigham, before I moved to Wellington. Here I am Executive Head Chef at the Jackson Café Bistro.
