he amenities of a grand resort, the charms of a stylish boutique hotel - Silversea’s Millennium Class ship Silver Whisper invite you to enjoy Silversea’s world-class accommodation, shipboard conviviality and warm, individualized service, paired with the enhanced spaces and amenities of a larger ship. Revel in the pampering treatments of an expanded wellness spa, shop the hottest trends from top designers at our shipboard boutiques and enjoy dynamic full-scale productions in a multi-tiered show lounge. Silver Whisper luxury cruise ship has it all. There is something uniquely satisfying about a smaller ship - the intimacy, the friendly camaraderie, the excitement of exploring secluded harbours where others cannot go. This intimate, ultra-luxury ship can sail up narrow waterways into the heart of a city, or tie up right at the pier while others must anchor off shore. And for those who yearn to explore the new and unknown, Silversea’s three purpose-built expedition ships can transport you to the furthermost boundaries of the planet. Equally gratifying is the experience on board our prestigious ships. The spacious suites with butler service, the almost epic epicureanism of the cuisine, the warm hospitality and European cachet that attract guests from around the globe. Travel is the elixir of life at Silversea and every cruise is a voyage of discovery. Come explore the possibilities on a Silversea cruise.
Fowey, Cornwall, England, UK Nestled in the mouth of a wooded estuary, Fowey (pronounced Foy) is still very much a working china-clay port, as well as a focal point for the sailing fraternity. Increasingly, it’s also a favoured home of the rich and famous. Fowey offers good and varied dining. 4
Cork, Ireland Cork’s city nearby harbour district has seen plenty of history. Cork harbour’s attractions include Fota Island – with an arboretum, a wildlife park, and the Fota House ancestral estate – and the fishing port of Cobh.
Dublin, Ireland Ask any Dubliner what’s happening and you may hear echoes of one of W. B Yeat’s most-quoted lines “all changed, changed utterly”. No matter that the decade-long “Celtic Tiger” boom era has been quickly followed by the Great Recession – for visitors Dublin remains one of Western Europe’s most popular and delightful urban destinations. Whether or not you’re out to enjoy the old or new Dublin, you’ll find it a colossally entertaining city, all the more astonishing considering its intimate size. Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK The city of Belfast was a great Victorian success story, an industrial boomtown whose prosperity was built on trade – especially linen and shipbuilding. The Titanic was built here, giving Belfast, for a time, the nickname “Titanic Town”. In 2012 the city commemorated the 100th anniversary of the liner’s sinking on 15th April 1912, by opening a dazzling Titanic Belfast exhibition centre. With 9 galleries spread over 6 floors, the enormous multi-prow-shaped building – about the same height as Titanic and twice the size of City Hall – the centre
certainly has the wow factor. It has generated international interest, bringing in much-needed revenue and creating jobs at a difficult economic time. Reykjavik, Iceland Sprawling Reykjavik, the nation’s nerve centre and government seat, is home to half the island’s population. On a bay overlooked by proud Mount Esja (pronounced eh-shyuh), with its ever-changing hues, Reykjavik presents a colourful sight, its concrete houses painted in light colours and topped by vibrant red, blue and green roofs. In contrast to the almost treeless countryside, Reykjavik has many tall, native birches, rowans and willows, as well as imported aspen, pines and spruces. Reykjavik’s name comes from the Icelandic words for smoke, reykur and bay, vik. Narsarsuaq, Greenland Narsarsuaq means “the Great Plain” and was originally built as an American Air Base in 1941 during World War II. It is located 200km north of Cape Farewell in an area of natural beauty at the head of Eric’s Fjord (Tunnalliarfik). Narsarsuaq is the junction for air traffic in and out of South Greenland. Around 160 people live in the airport area, which also includes a hotel,

youth hostel, grocery shop, café, museum and nurse station. The climate is stable, sunny and mild with summer temperatures up to 20 degrees Celsius providing lush and varied vegetation. The mountains surrounding the plain rise up to a height of 400 or 500 metres. L’Anse Aux Meadows, Newfoundland, Canada L’Anse Aux Meadows on the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland is a remote community of just 40 people, with St Anthony, 40 minutes away, having a population of only 3,500. The region is locally famous for springtime polar bears, nesting eider ducks, the northern extreme of the Appalachians at nearby Belle Isle, numerous spring and summer icebergs and a rich ocean fishery. L’Anse Aix meadows National Historic Site is the UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells the story of Leif Erickson and the first Europeans in the new world. This site is often the keystone

attraction for cruises themed around the Vikings. Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada Newfoundland’s fourth largest city. Corner Brook is the hub of the island’s west coast. Hills fringe three sides of the city, which has dramatic views of the harbour and the Bay of Islands. The town is also home to a large paper mill and a branch of Memorial University. Captain James Cook, the British explorer, charted the coast in the 1760s and a memorial to him overlooks the bay. The town enjoys more clearly defined seasons than most of the rest of the island and in summer it has many pretty gardens. The nearby Humber River is the best-known salmon river in the province and there are many kilometres of wellmaintained walking trails in the community. walls, is the oldest part of the city. It runs roughly from the waterfront in the south to ruelle des Fortifications in the north and from rue McGill in the west to rue Berri in the east. The churches and chapels here stand as testament to the religious fervour that inspired the French settlers who landed here in 1642 to build a “Christian commonwealth” under the leadership of Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve and the indomitable Jeanne Mance. Stone warehouses and residences are reminders of how quickly the fur trade commercialised that lofty ideal and made the city one of the most prosperous in 18th century Nouvelle France. of the St Lawrence River, Gaspé offers a splendid variety of coastal landscapes and natural vistas. Here the coastline marks a major indentation creating the beautiful Bay of Gaspé, which comes inland for some 21 miles. This bay was long inhabited by the Indians of the sea, the Micmacs. In 1534 the French explorer, Jacques Cartier, arrived and in the name of the king of France, he officially took possession of this new land that was to become Canada. During the next four centuries, Gaspé became the hub of the peninsula. Important fisheries of dried, salted cod, exported mostly to Europe, developed and was the livelihood of nearly everyone. Québec, Canada Québec city’s alluring setting atop Cape Diamond (Cap Diamant) evokes a past of high adventure, military history and exploration. This French-speaking capital city is the only walled city north of Mexico. Visitors come for the delicious and inventive cuisine, the remarkable historical continuity and to share in the seasonal exuberance of the largest Francophone population outside France. The historic heart of this community is the Old City (Vieux-Québec), comprising the part of Upper Town (HauteVille) surrounded by walls and Lower Town (Basse-Ville) which spreads out at the base of the hill from Place Royale. From Cornwall
Falmouth to Montréal Onboard Silver Muse 13th September 2017 – 16 days from £7,460pp
S
ilversea Cruises are delighted to present their new flagship, Silver Muse, to be delivered in the spring of 2017. The new ultra-luxury ship is being built by Fincantieri and at 40,700 grt accommodates 596 guests, representing an exciting evolution of Silver Spirit that will redefine ultra-luxury ocean travel, enhancing the small-ship intimacy and spacious allsuite accommodations that are the hallmarks of the Silversea experience. The addition of Silver Muse will expand Silversea’s fleet to nine ships, and will once again significantly raise the bar in the ultra-luxury cruise market with a wealth of enhancements to the onboard experience, while satisfying the uncompromising requirements for comfort, service, and quality of the world’s most discerning travellers. Falmouth, England, UK Cornwall stretches west into the sea, with plenty of magnificent coastline to explore. The predominantly cliff-lined Cornish coast, interspersed with broad expanses of sand, has many tempting places to stop, including Padstow (for a seafood feast), Newquay (a surfing and tourist centre) or St Ives, a 6
delightful artist’s colony. From Land’s End, the westernmost tip of Britain, you’ll discover savage land and seascapes and panoramic views. The Channel coast is less rugged than the northern coast, with more sheltered beaches. Cornwall has managed to retain a touch of its old insularity, despite the annual invasion of thousands of tourists.
Waterford, Ireland The largest town in the southeast and Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century and was taken over by Strongbow, the Norman invader, with much bloodshed in 1170. The city resisted Cromwell’s 1649 attacks but fell the following year. It did not prosper again until 1783, when George and William Penrose set out to create “plain and cut flint glass, useful and ornamental” and thereby set in motion a glass manufacturing industry long without equal. The famed glassworks closed after the 2008 financial crisis, but Waterford Crystal has triumphantly risen again from the flames in a smaller, leaner version, opened in 2010 and now relocated to the Mall. Cobh, Ireland Cork’s city nearby harbour district has seen plenty of history. Cork harbour’s attractions include Fota Island – with an arboretum, a wildlife park, and the Fota House ancestral estate – and the fishing port of Cobh. Galway, Ireland Welcome to the city of a hundred thousand welcomes! Often referred to as the “most Irish”of all of the Irish cities, Galway has retained a healthy respect for the past. Arty and musical, Galway is the beatnik little brother of Dublin and Cork, with live music being played in the streets. Concerts every weekend and traditional Irish music sessions in almost every pub, almost every night. The city cultivates its bohemian reputation and every summer the Galway Arts Festival brings around 150,000 people to the city.
St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada Like any seaport worth its salt, Saint John is a welcoming place but, more than that, it is fast transforming into a sophisticated urban destination worthy of the increasing number of cruise ships that dock at its revitalized waterfront. Such is the demand that a second cruise terminal opened in 2012, just two years after the first one and in 2013 will see the two-millionth cruise passenger disembark. All the comings and goings over the centuries have exposed Saint Johners’ to a wide variety of cultures and ideas, creating a characterful maritime city with a vibrant artistic community. Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada If you come directly to Cape Breton via plane, ferry or cruise ship, Sydney is where you’ll land. If you’re seeking anything resembling an urban experience, it’s also where you’ll want to stay - after all, this is the island’s sole city. Admittedly, it is not the booming centre it was a century ago when the continent’s largest steel plant was located here (that era is evoked in Fall on Your Knees, an Oprah Book Club pick penned by Cape Bretoner Anne-Marie MacDonald). However, Sydney has a revitalised waterfront and smattering of Loyalist-era buildings that appeal to visitors. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada Designated as the island capital in 1765, Charlottetown is both Prince Edward Island’s oldest and largest urban centre. However, since the whole “metropolitan” area only has a population of about

Peppered with gingerbreadclad homes, converted warehouses, striking churches and monumental government buildings, Charlottetown’s core seems relatively unchanged from its 19th century heyday when it hosted the conference that led to the formation of Canada. Gaspé, Québec, Canada Situated at the very tip of the Gaspé Peninsula at the mouth of the St Lawrence River, Gaspé offers a splendid variety of coastal landscapes and natural vistas. Saguenay, Québec, Canada Saguenay is a city located on the Saguenay River in the SaguenayLac-Jean region of Québec, Canada. It was formed in 2002 through the amalgamation of the cities of Chicoutimi, Jonquière, La Baie and Laterrière and includes the municipalities of Lac-Kénogami and Shipshaw and part of the township of Tremblay.
