NEWS
I am delighted to welcome you to our latest issue of Cruise News which is full of interesting features dedicated entirely to the world of Ocean & River cruising in advance of our third Cruise Show on Sunday 14th October at the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay. I hope you’ve taken the opportunity to pre-register to guarantee your cinema and/ or seminar presentation seats? Just visit www.newellstravel.co.uk/cruise-show. Royal Caribbean Cruises are once again our headline sponsor donating a fantastic 7 nights’ cruise for 2 lucky people on their Northern European Cityscapes cruise aboard Independence of the Seas. Following the conception of the Ocean and River Cruise Club (OARCC) last year, Nick Pritchard has joined us as our newly appointed Cruising Manager and he gives an overview of OARCC (see page 19) and already we are the winners of The Travel Network Group’s (TTNG) “Cruise Club Member of the Year Award” (see page 30). This year many of my staff have experienced, for the first time, the joys of cruising and they impart their findings and impressions in features throughout the magazine. Even Helen and I took to the high seas and all will be revealed on pages 16 and 17. Our wonderful cruise line companies have contributed features to tempt you to join the fastest growing sector in the travel industry. All you need do now; is take a seat and enjoy a jolly good read.

Halfway around the globe W
e all have our dream holidays and this has got to be the ultimate – a world cruise taking in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean & Panama Canal, 5 continents, 27 countries, 37 ports of call, 120 nights just about sums it up! Unfortunately I wasn’t on board for the whole circumnavigation but just 42 nights as far as New Zealand. I was cruising with Cruise & Maritime Voyages on their flagship MV Columbus, an ex-P&O ship but completely rebranded and refurbished. Cruise & Maritime offer fantastic early booking offers which at 2 for the price of 1 result in very affordable fares from just £8,999 per person based on two sharing departing January 2020, a world cruise experience within reach of many travellers. At 67,000 tons she is also large enough to cope with the demands of open-ocean cruising and deliver a wide range of on board experiences from top of the range spa facilities to exciting, colourful and professional shows. Our itinerary included, amongst others, Madeira, Barbados, Grenada, Colombia, Panama, Tahiti, Bora Bora & Moorea. Life rarely offers you the opportunity to completely escape from the pressures and demands of normal living but being on a cruise ship for 6 weeks is about as close as you can get. My wife and I gradually eased into a daily routine which included joining the Columbus Choir and performing in front of over 1,000 fellow passengers in the show lounge as part of a 120 strong choir, a highlight which will live long in my memory. Other highlights have to be swimming with black tipped sharks and stingrays in Bora Bora, a 4 wheel adventure into 4

the centre of Tahiti and 16 relaxing days at sea without seeing any land as we crossed the Pacific! We made many good friends, a number of which we are still in contact with and we are even attending the wedding of 2 of them next July, it really is an opportunity to build friendships that last. If you ever get the chance to cruise through the Panama Canal, don’t pass it up, it is a marvel of human engineering and one of the great man-made wonders of the world. Would I do it again, you bet I would! Just do it! Steve Jones – Senior Travel Consultant, Helston

Norwegian Fjords
This was my first time sailing with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and what a wonderful experience! We sailed from Southampton for a week to the Norwegian Fjords on board MS Braemar. The ship holds 970 passengers, so a nice size especially good when sailing around Norway as the ship was able to sail right into the smallest of fjords. The atmosphere on board was very friendly, with the average age being about 65 - 70 (great to be one of the youngest for a change). Braemar has a very British feel, they have a “British Night” where people are encouraged to wear red, white and blue, as well as two formal nights when you have a chance to get glammed up! The public areas are large and comfortable and there was always a spare seat to sit and have a chat with fellow passengers or read a book. There is a library and a Wi-Fi centre for those who need to stay in touch with the outside world. There always seemed to be something going on during the days at sea, such as quizzes, lectures and my personal favourite, jewellery making. We travelled in May so the weather was slightly chilly but this didn’t stop me using the outdoor pool and hot tubs, which were lovely and warm. The dining options are traditional with two sittings in either the Thistle Restaurant or the Grampian. Dining times and table size can be requested at the time of booking. The food on board was excellent and we had at least four courses every night. There is also the buffet restaurant, Palms Café, if you want to be more flexible with your dining time; this is also open for breakfast and lunch. There was always a huge range of hot and cold food; my only problem was knowing when to stop because it’s all so delicious! I would highly 6
recommend requesting a table in the Grampian Restaurant because it is much smaller and on the top deck so the views are amazing. We had an inside cabin which was fine, enough room for two of us and plenty of room for our vast array of clothes! The bathroom was small but functional and had everything we needed. To be honest we didn’t spend much time in the cabin at all. Speaking to customers on board everybody seemed very happy with their accommodation whether it be an inside cabin or superior suite. Entertainment on board was brilliant, with really professional shows and comedians. There were two shows every evening so which ever dinner sitting you are on you never miss out. Sailing to the Norwegian Fjords was spectacular and is definitely more about the scenery than the ports, although
Newell’s C R U I S E
the ports were pretty too. Excursions are quite expensive, due to the cost of living in Scandinavia, so sometimes we just got off the ship and enjoyed a wander around soaking up the atmosphere. Our favourite trip was the railway journey at Flam, which is a must do. All in all, it was a wonderful trip to a stunning destination on a lovely, friendly ship. Rachel Gill – Manager, Saltash
NEWS
TOP TIPS • Request a table in the Grampian Restaurant on Braemar. • Have lunch in the dining room to save yourself eating too much at the buffet! • Take a selection of warm and cooler clothes as temperatures can vary. • Book the Railway Journey excursion in Flam.

CLIA E
stablished in 1975, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is the world’s largest cruise industry trade association, providing a unified voice and leading authority of the global cruise community. Andy Harmer, CLIA UK & Ireland director says: “As cruise lines have developed their on board product, itineraries and shore-side experiences, we can confidently say that cruising has broken through the glass ceiling, and that we should no longer consider cruising as a specialist holiday but becoming a mainstream holiday choice. The number of UK cruisers last year reached almost 2 million, as growing numbers of people understand the great holiday experiences available, at incredible value for money. However, as an industry we still have work to do to overcome misconceptions about a holiday at sea or on the river, but we are definitely moving in the right direction. Globally, there were 26.7 million cruise passengers last year, up 6.3 per cent on 2016, with guests sourced from all over the world. An incredible number considering the small base it started from just fifty years ago. With $60billion ready to be invested in new ship orders over the next 10 years alone, the time is right to encourage first time cruisers to set sail, as new ships, and fleet refurbishment means that there has never been more choice. Putting innovation at the heart of efforts to entice more people to cruise for the first time is crucial; both the on board experience and the land-based excursions, will draw newcomers in. When listening to today’s customers’ talk about cruises you’re more likely to first hear incredible experiential references, such as visits to private Caribbean islands, bars staffed by robots, food cooked in the restaurant of a celebrity chef, visiting relatively unknown and exotic climes, and a raft of adventurous adrenaline-filled sports such as zip-lining. All non-traditional cruise expectations and all largely experiences you’re unlikely to get with a land-based holiday. Travel agents sell the vast majority of cruises in the UK, as customers rely on them for expert knowledge and guidance through the booking process and their choice of cabin types, activities, entertainment and dining options, and much more. So the time is definitely now, we need to work together to show off the incredible variety of cruise holidays; thanks to the amazing choice of ships, itineraries and type of cruises available, there’s never been a better time”. 11

with P&O H
elen and I have taken many short “taster” cruises but we have never attempted a full 2 week cruise so our first adventure was to be on P&O’s Ventura. Although larger than we would have ideally liked, we chose her because of the wonderful itinerary she offered taking us to destinations which were new to us. Our first port of call was Oporto in Northern Portugal, where the name suggests, is famous for its fortified wines. Here we took advantage of the open top city bus tour which conveniently dropped us near to the Taylor’s Port House. Here we took a self-guided tour with audio commentary around the vats, barrels and museum pieces and finally sampled the port. Needless to say, a couple of bottles found their way home to Cornwall! Travelling south we then entered the Mediterranean where Barcelona was beckoning us. Our visit was all too short and we have already ear-marked this beautiful city for a long weekend in the near future. Further into the Med we arrived at Corsica’s capital, Ajaccio – the birthplace of Napoleon. After a very pleasant lunch and a stroll around the picturesque streets it was time to return for a couple of sundowners by the pool. From here we sailed to Naples in Southern Italy where many excursions were available but we chose to visit Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site. What an incredible experience! Pompeii was buried underneath metres of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. The ruins are still being painstakingly excavated, a must visit if you are ever in the area. Next stop was Civitavecchia (for Rome). As we had visited Rome on many occasions we chose to take the shuttle bus into town before returning to experience a half empty Ventura while other passengers were still exploring; another first for us.

We then sailed to the island of Sardinia, where we dropped anchor at Alghero Bay and took the short journey by ship tender ashore. A small taxi journey took us to a wonderful beach at Mugoni for a lazy afternoon before returning to the ship. Our last port of call was Gibraltar, where we strolled through the streets and took advantage of the incredible duty free prices. Two P&O ships departed at virtually the same time and everybody waved their Union Jack flags to the tune of Royal Britannia, etc. In between the ports of call we enjoyed our “days at sea” where lazing around the pool areas and on the sun-decks on comfortable, if not somewhat cramped sun-beds to soak up the rays, was the order of the day. Feeling a little guilty we did intersperse our relaxation with enjoyable games of deck quoits and shuffle board. P&O still preserve the old values of traditional cruising where formal nights are still retained, suits and DJs are the dress code – not everyone’s cup of tea nowadays but it did make you feel special and the crew went out of their way to make the formal evenings most memorable.
There is always so much to see and do whilst on board at all times. Enjoy one of their many productions in the theatre itself or why not try your hand at a game of bingo (the jackpot on the final day was £1,500!) Dinner, in the Bay Tree Restaurant, was always an enjoyable experience and the attentive staff made our dining a pleasure. Helen & I always opt for a larger table so that we can enjoy the company of like-minded cruisers and partake in lively banter and reminisce about our days’ adventures. You start the cruise as strangers and by the end you are friends. As an alternative we occasionally chose the Glass House where we enjoyed some amazing tapas and, of course, the odd glass of rosé. The Sindhu Restaurant was another treat not to be missed. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of an extended cruise but perhaps our next ocean adventure will be on a smaller ship with a more relaxed atmosphere but we are already investigating a river cruise so look out for our next review. Ready to holiday like never before? Iona. Arriving 2020.
Crystal-clear waters. Towering snow-capped mountains. Cascading waterfalls. Where else but the Norwegian fjords? For the first part of her inaugural season, Iona will be sailing to this spectacular region and visiting unforgettable ports of call. It takes time to look this good. In fact, it was a succession of ice ages over many millennia that shaped Norway’s fjords into the spectacular landscape you see today. Clear, blue waters sparkle surrounded by towering cliffs, while small villages and working farms cling to the mountainsides. Awe-inspiring national parks abound with tumbling waterfalls, crystal-clear rivers and breathtaking viewing points across myriad mountain, fjord and glacier landscapes. The Norwegian fjords are truly like nowhere else on earth. But while the region’s beauty is no doubt a top draw, there’s much more to the fjords than just a pretty face. Culture, history and adrenaline-pumping activities abound for intrepid travellers of all types, from glacier hikes and kayaking to Viking history and unique foodie experiences. The past, present and future often go hand in hand in the charming towns and cities, all of which boast a long seafaring, fishing and trading history. The region is also famed for its great hospitality – you’ll be warmly welcomed by proud and friendly locals who are keen to share what their country has to offer. Each port Iona visits offers a different experience, and each brings you closer to the charms of this unforgettable region. So relax, breathe in the fresh air and prepare to discover the beauty of the fjords, one destination at a time.

Finding the right cruise... just for you
NEWS
Selecting the right cruise is a mine field. Over the last 15 years the cruising industry has exploded with over 70 cruise companies, 350 ocean-going cruise ships and over 1,000 river ships all providing the perfect cruise for someone – but how to choose?
You must firstly consider a number of factors: •
•
•
When do you wish to travel and for how long? You’d be surprised at the options you have to choose from. In the UK there are 1 night “tasters” to World cruises of over 3 months duration. Do you want to cruise from the UK or fly cruise? With fly cruising you can join your ship in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, for example, rather than sail for days to reach your first port of call. What do you want from your ship? Do you enjoy quiet, intimidate surroundings or 6* luxury? Do you want a family holiday where the ship is the destination?! The mega fleet of Royal Caribbean are floating resorts with rock climbing walls, outdoor cinemas and giant shopping malls catering for all family members. Do you want to explore fascinating, remote destinations to Norway, Iceland and beyond? Do you like Broadway style entertainment? Do you like eating at leisure? Do you want to sail in a seafaring tall ship?
Since everyone is different the criteria is endless.
C
ruising is the ultimate in holiday adventure and the fastest growing sector in the travel industry and, at the Ocean and River Cruise Club, our number one aim is to select the right ship for the right passenger. The Ocean & River Cruise Club is part of the Newell’s TRAVEL Group and is led centrally by myself, Nick Pritchard, the Cruising Manager and I have 30 years’ experience of working in the cruising industry. In support, I have 11 Cruise Ambassadors, one in each of the Newell’s TRAVEL offices, all dedicated to the world of cruising. Together we can provide you with honest, independent and unbiased advice as to which cruise is right for you. Since we are dealing with cruising every working day, we receive the latest up-dates, offers and trends available within the industry.
We know how important your holiday is to you and we provide the expert knowledge to create your bespoke cruise holiday exactly as you desire. We know that a cruise by itself makes for a fantastic holiday. But what if we add a hotel city break prior to joining your ship? What if your cruise ends at Barcelona but you want to spend a few days exploring this wonderful city? What if you have been on a cruise full of excursions and excitement and you just want a few days, or more, relaxing on a beautiful beach? We have the knowledge and experience to tailor-make any cruise to fit your wishes, as unique to you as your imagination. Whatever extra special add-ons you desire, we can create your dream holiday. Whether it is additional flights, hotels, transfers, we can do it just for you. It doesn’t have to cost the earth either, with our contacts in the cruise industry and the travel industry in general, we have a plethora of people that we can call upon to get the best deal and the right holiday for you. So, with all that is on offer we can help you find the right ship and cruise to make you want to cruise time and time again. Freedom in the WesternMediterranean
I
n October last year I was very lucky to be able to go on a Royal Caribbean Cruise with a colleague around the Mediterranean and visit places I had only dreamed about. The ship itself was the Freedom of the Seas and was packed with activities to enjoy, entertainment and a great array of dining facilities suitable for all ages, as the Royal Caribbean fleet is very family orientated. The service on board was phenomenal as all of the staff were approachable, friendly and always wearing a smile. My highlight on board was watching the breathtaking Ice Show. The skating was world class, full of fast paced, action packed but yet beautiful routines. I was allocated an inside cabin large enough for me and my colleague, which was perfect for our requirements as we were always out and about, either exploring the ship or visiting the stunning ports of call, so I wasn’t worried about missing out on views from a cabin. The only thing that I did miss, with having an inside cabin, was not being able to open the curtains and have natural light coming in. The ports of call that I was fortunate to visit were Marseilles, Villefranche, Pisa, Rome and Naples. As I had never been to any of these locations I truly was blown away by the beauty of each destination for different reasons. Marseilles was a pretty town where you could just sit idly in a cafe watching the yachts and the world go by. Up the coast we stopped in Villefranche and I went to the playground of the rich and famous, Monte Carlo. It was fun to see how the other half live for the day; designer shopping, fast cars, casinos and super yachts. The first stop in Italy was Pisa where the obligatory

photo had to be taken of holding up the leaning tower! The ship meandered down to Rome and although there was a lot of walking around, for me, the history and architecture was awe inspiring. Our final destination was Naples and I took the opportunity to head to the stunning Island of Capri where the views were completely breath-taking and the streets were full of boutiques. It was here that I had a pizza made out of home grown local produce that was delicious and washed down with an Italian gelato, yum! I loved my week on board Freedom of the Seas. It was fun, exciting and I would not hesitate to go on another cruise with Royal Caribbean. From delicious food, spectacular entertainment to the fantastic children’s facilities, Royal Caribbean offers an ideal holiday experience for current and future cruise generations. It really was an extraordinary experience and the perfect way to holiday. Alex Marlow – Travel Consultant, Truro

Essence of a River CRUISE T
here is nothing quite like waking to the sounds of gently lapping water, as you moor up along the riverbank of a town or city, with the excitement of strolling into the heart of the destination you want to discover, ahead of you. River cruising allows you to immerse yourself in continuous scenery which slips past at a genteel pace. History and culture lie around every bend of the river. With a great range of excursions available on board, everyone can enjoy a unique holiday experience. Choosing the day’s activity is the hard part – will it be a castle or chateau, a vineyard, museum or palace or will it be a world famous patisserie or local brewery? Do I want to take one of the ships bicycles and go on a bike ride, or maybe just a picnic in the splendid gardens of a nearby local stately home? All options are on offer with the expertise of a local guide who can bring these destinations to life. The ships have a boutique hotel feel to them, they offer a relaxing and stress free atmosphere in which to kick back after a busy day of sightseeing. Generally carrying no more than 200 passengers, its informal atmosphere is a great place to relax and exchange stories with like-minded passengers. Having just three decks, there is a selection of cabins on offer, the upper and main decks will offer French-style “Juliette” balconies, picture windows on the lower deck are just above the water level, all offer ensuite facilities some with shower and some with bath and shower. Tea and coffee making facilities are a must for the early morning cuppa. The sun deck is a wonderful outdoor space to soak up the sun and relax or play a game of giant chess or draughts. The bridge is forward of the sun deck and the captain is always happy to show you around his ‘office’. 22

Dining is full board in one open sitting with tables ranging from 2–10 in size and smart casual attire is welcome after a busy day. After dinner the entertainment in the lounge is low key and often involves local artists coming aboard and performing shows of traditional dancing/ singing coupled with a drink at the bar. The atmosphere is mellow and friendly. Often, the ship will leave late in the evening allowing you to head back into the heart of the town or city to take in a theatre or show.
Newell’s C R U I S E
A morning or afternoon of sailing allows you to visit the ships gym, spa or pool and sauna, put your feet up with a good book in the library or catch up on your emails if you feel the need. To those who have experienced ocean cruising but never sampled river cruising, there are no days at sea. This gives an intensity of visual delight unique to river cruising. I have been very lucky and had the opportunity to cruise the Rhine and Danube and look forward to the next adventure. For me, a river cruise is like having several city breaks all rolled together in one holiday. It’s a wonderful way of sampling a regions attractions and thinking “yes – I need to come back here again for longer!!” Debbie Rundle – Manager, Newquay

Cruise Tips These are some useful tips to help your cruise run smoothly: If the budget allows, it is still possible to get a small ship feel on a big ship if you choose a higher grade cabin that gives you the additional benefits of priority tender for excursions when anchored at sea, priority disembarkation on your final day, exclusive intimate restaurants and exclusive smaller reserved seating areas in the main show lounge, to name but a few, giving you the best of both worlds. Helen Hawke - Director On fly cruise and river cruise, always book a pre-cruise hotel; otherwise you don’t get to see your departure port and you might be missing out on seeing Barcelona, Venice, Rome, etc and for river cruises; Amsterdam, Cologne, etc. Of course, the other benefit is that it is such a relaxing way to start your holiday. Nick Pritchard - Cruising Manager Pre-book excursions with your cruise company - it helps you budget, saves the hassle on board and you know you’ll be looked after. Lisa Hawken - Cruise Ambassador – Bodmin Before booking discuss what you want from a cruise, are you going for the itinerary, food, dressing up, on board amenities, etc – take time to choose the right cruise for you. Remember not to pack your tickets/passport in your main suitcase but have them in your hand luggage. For first time cruisers - who may not know the procedure of disembarkation, which is to put your case out at midnight with all your clothes. Make sure you put aside what you want to wear in the morning and pack a small bag to put your toothbrush, toiletries, pyjamas, etc to carry off yourself. For ladies, pack a pashmina or similar (saves buying one on board). Dining rooms in the evening can have the air conditioning on and if you happen to be sitting right under an air conditioning unit it can be pretty cold. Don’t pack too much, there’s always a laundry on board if it is a long cruise.
If purchasing a drink’s package on board the first day; take a look at the drinks menu in one of the bars first to make sure it includes the drinks you like. If it doesn’t you have wasted your money and you could end up spending even more. Sue Bond - Business Travel Manager and avid cruiser I always advise clients to pre-book extras, i.e. speciality restaurants for lunch/dinner, speciality entertainment, spa treatments, hairdressers, etc, before they board for the days that the ship will be at sea. Always book a drinks package of some sort. Book excursions before you travel to avoid disappointment. Lisa Holdroff – Cruise Ambassador – Falmouth If you can use fold away suitcases so that they can be stored under the beds and not clutter up what may be quite a small cabin. Jo Bayley - Cruise Ambassador - Kingsbridge Use the brochure and virtual tours to get familiar with the ship before you board. Good walking shoes are a must. Always make use of the on board lectures, the insider knowledge is priceless and the information given saves you wasting time when you arrive and for special interest cruise experiences you gain valuable insight into what you will see. Choose your cabin grade depending on where and when you cruise, such as a balcony in June for the Fjords is highly recommended. Pack a small rucksack for water bottles and sun cream and use it on the last night for your overnight bag once the suitcases have been put out for disembarkation. Team Newquay - avid cruisers On the day of embarkation; always pack your medication and swimming costume in your hand luggage as your main suitcase does not arrive until later on in the day. Alex Marlow - Cruise Ambassador - Truro 25

Exploring Europe
On Sapphire Princess W
e were delighted to find this interesting itinerary on board Sapphire Princess sailing from Southampton. First stop Guernsey where we went ashore and got a local bus tour of the Island, next was supposed to be Bordeaux but due to dock strikes we had to go to La Rochelle which was beautiful, the ship organised coaches to take us into the town where we had Moules and Frites on the quay side. The third stop was Bilbao in northern Spain again we had coaches to take us into the city, a very interesting place, very lush and green. Our final stop was La Coruna where we were able to wander from the ship into the town and had wonderful tapas in the sunshine. This was a really different cruise for people who only want to be away for seven days with wonderful ports of call. Sapphire Princess is a beautiful ship, which has been recently refurbished. She takes 2,670 guests and has 1,100 crew members. Being such a large ship there is always lots to do, several outdoor pools and an indoor one for cooler days. There is a carnival atmosphere around the largest pool with bands playing but also lots of places to escape from the noise. There is always something to occupy you on the days at sea, I spent lots of time walking the deck, three times round was a mile, trying to balance out the amount I had eaten! The food options on Sapphire Princess were amazing, they have the traditional dining with two sittings or they also do “Anytime Dining” which suited a lot of people we spoke to. You can go and eat any time from 5.30 - 10pm in any of the standard dining rooms, you can ask for a table to yourselves or choose to sit with other people. Reservations are recommended but not compulsory, this seemed like a nice option if you wanted to try all the dining rooms and change what time you ate. There are also speciality restaurants where you have to pay a cover 28
charge; these included an Italian and a Steak House. There is also The Horizon Court Buffet which is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. We had delicious burgers and chips from the Trident Grill which is outside by the main pool.

Top Tips: • Try the burger and chips from The Trident Grill • Have afternoon tea in the Savoy Dining Room. • If you have walking difficulties opt for a cabin near the lift, the corridors are very long • Book early to avoid disappointment
One of the best things about Sapphire Princess was the entertainment, from West End shows to comedians. We were lucky enough to have the very talented Gareth Gates (for those who remember him) on board. There were also excellent facilities for families with kids clubs and a splash pool. Cabins were lovely and spacious; we had a balcony with two chairs and a table on it. Huge walk in wardrobe and very well appointed bathroom. A lovely ship and a lovely itinerary, would highly recommend. Rachel Gill – Manager, Saltash

N E W E L L’ s new s Delighted about our Cruise Award
We mentioned in Issue 9 of Newell’s News that we had been honoured with yet another award but this is quite a special award as it recognises Newell’s TRAVEL for its growing expertise in the cruising world. At The Travel Network Group’s (TTNG) cruise conference held in Birmingham on Sunday 20th May at The Forest of Arden Hotel, 7 of our Cruise Ambassadors, together with Nick Pritchard, our Cruising Manager, were delighted to receive the “Cruise Club Member of the Year” award. From the photograph you can see how proud and excited Nick and the team were to accept the award from Gary Lewis, the Chief Executive Officer of TTNG.
Imminent move for our Hayle office
Kay, manager, and newly joined Cathy, are excited to be moving to larger premises just down the road having outgrown their current office. At the time of going to press the exact date of the move has yet to be announced but it is hoped to be by 24th September when we are moving to 49 Fore Street and once we do we hope you will be able to drop by and admire our new office. Kay has worked for Newell’s TRAVEL since 1986 and been with the Hayle office since its opening in 1991; she left to have a family and returned in 2004. In readiness for the move, Cathy joined Newell’s TRAVEL in January 2018. They have pretty much covered the globe with their travels so you will be in safe, expert hands when you visit.
New to Newell’s TRAVEL
We are delighted to announce some recent new arrivals and we wish them all a long and happy association with Newell’s Travel. Annie Hughes has actually been working in our Bodmin office since January on work experience and she loved it so much, she joined us full time on 2nd July. Annie is not only passionate about being a travel consultant but has also taken on the social media of Newell’s TRAVEL. Kate Askew joined our Helston office on 23rd July and comes with over 20 years travel experience, particularly specialising in cruising and the USA. She has worked for Travelcare (Co-Op) and then as manager in Harvey World (Vacation World) and Bath Travel (Hays Travel) before returning to her Cornish roots and joining Newell’s TRAVEL. Julie Newman joined our Liskeard office on 31st July having started her travel career at Travelcare (Co-Op) before it merged with Thomas Cook. She has worked her way up from travel consultant to assistant and then branch manager and having worked in Liskeard was keen to take up the position offered in our Liskeard office when the Thomas Cook office closed. Julie is well travelled with a broad range of destination knowledge from relaxing beach holidays to skiing in the Alps. 30
A graduate in Kingsbridge
For the past 2 years I have been studying a distance learning course at Leeds Beckett which has culminated in my achieving a degree as a Bachelor of Science in Travel Business Management. Distance learning was definitely for me and the opportunity that The Travel Trade Gazette gave me by sponsoring my further education allowed me a practical and flexible way to achieve a personal goal, without having to leave the job I love and the ability to work around my lifestyle. Studying Travel Business Management was really interesting due to the diversity of the travel industry and the course allowed me to transfer my knowledge immediately to the work place. It was hard work but the Graduation Ceremony made it all worth worthwhile. Since completing the course, I have been awarded the Dr. Bill Maxwell Award by the Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT). The presentation evening was at the Houses of Parliament during the ITT’s Summer Party. It is amazing to be recognised for all the hard work that I put in and an honour to be able to network with others from all over the travel industry. Rebecca Tuck BSc – Assistant Manager, Kingsbridge
