WELCOME

irstly, I would like to give you a warm welcome to the first Newell’s TRAVEL News magazine. As the new Marketing and Media Co-ordinator for Newell’s TRAVEL I hope to inform and inspire you with details of all our great holidays and offers. With this in mind and having been art editor of several magazines, I put forward the idea of a Travel magazine for all our customers – as if I didn’t have enough to do! However, I couldn’t have wished for a better response to the publication. Our travel experts produced such informative articles with beautiful images, I had a hard job concentrating, as I found myself wanting to go to all the destinations. I hope the features will help you when choosing where to go for your next holiday. We were also given, not one, but two, amazing competition prizes. A chance of winning a luxury Caribbean holiday for two, courtesy of Kuoni and a cruise courtesy of Fred. Olsen departing from Falmouth, taking in our beautiful British coastline. To win either of these amazing holidays, you only have to enter our prize draw. I think you will agree they are both fantastic prizes. Please feel free to enter both competitions. I hope you enjoy this magazine, the next edition will be out in January 2016 and will preview our Travel Show in March.

I TA LY W
here can you go in just a few hours flying time from the UK, where you have sun, sea, mountains, art, culture, history, and with great food & wine? – The answer is Italia. One of my first child hood memories is playing on the lovely Adriatic beaches over 40 years ago and falling in love with this wonderful country. I still return today to see the unspoilt resorts still there and thriving, like little gems of seaside towns like Cesenatico with a harbour designed by Leonardo da Vinci. My love affair with Italy seems to grow stronger the older I get. Previously, I didn’t really understand the great interest in the Italian Lakes, until I went myself and was just amazed by the wonderful scenery, the vistas of Lake Garda are simply mesmerising, and if you are lucky you may even bump into George Clooney in Como! The ever popular Italian cities with their seemingly endless history have a similar effect but are totally different if that makes sense? It will all become very clear when you visit Venice, Florence and Rome, and having lunch in the food market in central Florence must not be missed as you get to eat like a local. My special, secret cities are Bologna and Ravenna. 4

D a n i e l e B r o c c o l i f r o m Ty p i c a l l y Italian gives his own insight into why Italy is so amazing.
Whenever I drive through Tuscany I always smile to myself, the gentle, sweeping roads and the vineyards all around makes it very easy and a most enjoyable experience, especially if you stop off in a local Agriturismo Restaurant! You will experience the most wonderful fresh food, all locally produced and the service is always great. I always think the ones without the table cloths are the best. In my opinion, one the most beautiful coastlines in the world is the famous Amalfi Coast, unlike many other people, I do not recommend hiring a car as the roads are very busy, and can be quite scary! Instead, base yourself in Sorrento and all the main attractions can be easily reached using the local public transport. Try an excursion or two during your stay, Mozzarella making is definitely worth a try! The towns of Amalfi and the lesser known Maiori and Minori are wonderful, and taking a boat trip back to Naples was one of my favourite journeys. This is just a sample of my travels in this diverse country, next time I will tell you about Sicily and Puglia but if you pop into Newell’s TRAVEL they will give you any help you need on Italy. Arrivederci for now.

KNOW YOUR ITALIAN WINES With over 2000 grape varieties and 20 uniquely designated wine producing regions, Italy remains one of the leading wine producing centres, New World or not. Tuscany and Piedmont are the leading regions, also Tre Venezie (“Three Venices”) of Veneto, Tentino-Alto Adge and Fruili. Italian wines can be divided into table wines, the typically cheerful red or white that would suit any Italian family dinner table, or higher end DOC or DOCG wines, ranging from good to superior. So there’s plenty to choose from, but to give you a start, here are a few typical varieties. Barbaresco and Barolo are ultra dry reds, highly concentrated. Chianti is more rustic and fruity, while Chianti classico is higher quality with more space and character than the standard Chianti. Barbaresco – from Piedmont, vine is Nebbiolo Barolo – same region, same vine Brachetto d’Acqui – Piedmont again, but the Brachetto vine Brunello di Montalino – Tuscany, and the Sangiovese vine Carmignano – same region, but Cabernet variety of the Sangiovese Chianti – 1970s favourite from Tuscany Chianti classico – yet another Tuscan, Sangiovese Franciacorte – Lombardy, a Chardonnay pinot nero vine Taurasi – Compania, Aglianico vine Torgiano rosso riserva – our old friend the Sangiovese, from Umbria this time 6

DID YOU KNOW? PASTA: Italy is the world’s biggest pasta producer (over 3 million tonnes in 2011), biggest pasta consumer (26kg per person per year, more than twice as much as second placed Venezuela) and biggest pasta exporter (1.7 millon tonnes, of which the UK takes just 12.6%). No prizes for guessing any of that...
VESPA MEANS: The name ‘Vespa’ for the world famous Italian scooter, means ‘little wasp,’ derived from its wasp-like shape. Still in production, the Vespa celebrates its 70th birthday next year. BEFORE ITALY... Italy wasn’t united as one country until the 1860s, when forces led by Guiseppe Garibaldi succeeded in unification. Before that, Italy was split between city-states, regions, the Papal States and Sicily.

Are you looking to take a cruise, here’s a guide to help you choose,
A
cruise is an adventure, somewhere new every day with the advantage of unpacking only once. Your floating hotel will take you to different places while you sleep or have an easy day at sea. Your ship will provide you with full board (don’t forget to try the afternoon tea!), in a range of restaurants, allowing you to have it served as buffet or a la carte. You may even have a speciality restaurant which is sponsored by a well known top chef who could even be on board!. Your cabin will vary in size, location and specification, according to your requirements and budget. It’s your personal space while on board. Inside cabins have no natural light but are cleverly lit to help overcome any feelings of claustrophobia. Outside cabins have portholes or picture windows, balcony cabins have a patio door and outside furniture to give you your own outdoor space. Suites give you much bigger floor space and generally give you a sitting area to spread out in. All cabins are en-suite with in-room entertainment, some offering tea and coffee facilities, fridges and mini bars. Room service is also offered but not always included in the cost. If your budget allows, butlers will unpack and run your bath, make a dinner reservation or book your shore excursions.
WHO CHOOSES TO CRUISE Solo Passengers
Fred. Olsen, Royal Caribbean, P&O Cruises and all major cruise lines offer single cabins. For the solo passenger cruising is a great way of making new friends. With get together meetings for passengers and dining tables of ten or twelve so you are never put in an awkward position or left alone unless you want a little solitude. Dance partners are available for those who love to trip the light fandango, tours are a group activity so there’s always someone to have a chat with.
Couples
Thomson provide a great starting point for new cruisers who want a charter flight from the local airport. They offer the convenience of 3-3½* accommodation with an informal feel, they have a limited programme of itineraries for each season. Celebrity Cruises, P&O Cruises, Fred. Olsen and Holland America offer 4* ships of various sizes doing fly and cruise options along with UK departures. These lines offer more dining opportunities with formal, themed and speciality options. They have onboard libraries, spa treatments, daily

activities, casinos and guest speakers. They have several bars with live entertainers and a theatre with a nightly show. These cruise lines have a rolling programme of itineraries and people quite often stay on and do back to back trips.
Families
NCL Cruises, MSC, Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruises offer the whole family everything they could want to keep everybody happy for the holiday, with flow rider and climbing walls, starlight cinema to karaoke kids, shopping and casino. These 4* ships carry canoes and bikes for land fun when you don’t want the excursions offered by the ship, some will babysit so mum and dad can leave the ship knowing the children are in good hands.

Passport. Swimming costume. Evening dress & shoes for a woman/ Suit for a man. Slightly larger clothes for the end of the cruise with all of the beautiful food on board! Camera - to catch the stunning landscapes that you will come across when you are coming into port. Layers of clothing for variable weather conditions. Comfortable shoes for your land excursions. Tipping on board for the great service from your waiter/waitress and your cabin steward.
Luxury
These 5* ships including Regent Seven Seas, Cunard, Azamara, Swan Hellenic are more for couples who love cultural immersion with great land excursions, amazing tutorials and occasions to remember. The culinary food is awesome, with quality wines to match. The accommodation is luxurious and is complemented with staff who seem to know what you want before you do.
Ultra
This group covers Star Clipper, Wind Star, Oceania and Seabourne. These are the absolute epitome of luxury and leave nothing to chance. Very high end and on my wish list!!
My Personal Favourite
Azamara Cruise lines have two smaller ships which are adult only and all inclusive. They provide an ‘Azamazing evening’, on most itinerarys. This is an excursion allowing passengers to indulge in local events and specialities. We were lucky enough to spend an exclusive evening at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. Violin playing sea serpents, mermaids in zorbs entertained us, whilst exploring the aquarium below and enjoying an amazing selection of wines and gourmet food. It was a truly memorable evening which I would love to do with my family....... one day!! Article by Debbie Rundle Manager of our Newquay Branch. As Debbie is an experienced cruiser herself she is always happy to advise on all aspects of cruising.

ow things have changed. It’s over 70 years since Hoseasons began offering holidays to the great British public. From a small boatyard in the southern Broads to a choice of over 23,000 places to stay – coast and countryside, both in the UK and abroad. Wally Hoseason probably didn’t know what he was starting back in the late 1940s. A harbourmaster at Oulton Broad, Wally had the bright idea of selling holidays by sending customers off into the tranquil Broads aboard one of his boats. It worked so well he started to help his boatyard neighbours do the same, and soon Hoseasons Holidays was born. It wasn’t long before his son James took over at the helm, turning it into a real family business. But boats were just the start. Hoseasons moved into landbased holidays in 1952, helping boatyard owners market their ‘riverside homes’ as holiday lets. Many of these were little more than wooden huts, but anglers loved them! A couple of years later, Hoseasons acquired the Thurman booking agency. By 1957, they were ready to expand the cruising side of the business, trialling the first boating holiday adverts on TV in London. As families looked for more independence from the traditional seaside guest house, a Hoseasons boating holiday proved to be a big hit. The swinging sixties saw more Brits want to do their own thing, with self-catering holidays attracting more people than ever. Hoseasons moved with the times, spearheading the explosion of UK-based self-catering breaks by travelling the country to find the best destinations. Into the 1970s, holiday parks were the next big thing, 12
A cup of tea in bed used to be the height of luxury, we can expect so much more these days. again offering families the freedom to enjoy their own holiday. It was a world away from the traditional ‘all-round’ packages, and so popular that by 1976 holiday parks became Hoseasons best sellers, ousting the ‘hi-de-hi’ style holiday camps – these had been a lot of fun, but they’d had their day. Customer service was moving on too. In the old days, customers booked by writing a good old fashioned letter, perhaps enclosing a postal order (remember those?) In 1975 Hoseasons pioneered telephone booking, as well as the diala-brochure service. A year later, they scored another first, with computer reservations taking over from the old wall booking charts. Until then, Hoseasons had focused purely on UK holidays, but 1982 saw an expansion into France with boating breaks, of course. Many holidays have always been booked through high street travel agents, and three years later Hoseasons recognised this and started distributing its brochures in this way. Alongside the growth of holidays abroad, the 1990s saw a revival of UK breaks and Hoseasons added its Country Cottages into the mix – now there’s a choice of 2300 all over the country.
Newell’s T R A V E L In 1999, James Hoseason retired after 50 years at the helm, receiving an OBE for services to travel. Now in the 21st century choices have expanded even more, Hoseasons Villas with Pools was added in 2006, City Break Apartments in 2008 and Lodges and Parks in Europe in 2010. Since then, Hoseasons has just kept on bringing a stream of new products to the holiday market. Autograph Lodges are handpicked hideaways where you can spend quality time in stylish lodge locations featuring hot tubs. The Evermore Collection is aimed at families looking for a luxurious break that combines relaxation with country walks, cycling or getting out into the local area – plus hot tubs. Daisy Door is a range of cottage style retreats, while if you thought you knew all about caravan breaks, Hoseasons Bouja introduces a new standard of luxury caravan accommodation, with hot tubs at every location. And no prizes for guessing at Hoseasons’ new specialisation for 2015 – the Home of Hot Tubs.
NEWS
NOW
TH E P R E S E N T DAY The UK holiday parks are now as popular as ever and is it any wonder? At a modern day holiday park resort, you can now enjoy luxury all the way. Many have their own spa where you can allow yourself to be completely pampered with many choices of treatments or, if you’re more active, why not burn off a few calories in the well-equipped air conditioned gym. After which, indulge yourself from a range of dishes from the Bistro-style restaurant before returning to the comfort of your holiday home. Holiday homes have come a long way since the good old fashioned caravan. They now offer “home from home” luxury with modern interior designs such as open-plan living areas, free-standing furniture and patio doors leading to verandas and some with private outdoor hot tubs. Fully-equipped kitchens, fitted with dishwashers and fridge freezers, are ideal for self-catering breaks. Many master bedrooms have en-suite WCs in addition to a family shower room and lovely twin bedrooms all of which create an ambiance of stylish living.
There is a myriad of fantastic holidays to choose from and all can be booked with Newell’s TRAVEL, Hoseasons’ South West partner.

kiers love it in winter, but in summer Austria gives you mountain pine air you could bottle and sell, glacier fresh beer, scented meadows, crystal lakes and waterfalls, a history of music and mad kings, houses painted with optical illusions, and sheer, sky-scraping peaks that’ll have you fumbling every moment for your camera or sketchbook. You stay seven nights at the 4 star Sport Hotel, St Anton am Arlberg, a Tyrolian mountain resort with aerial trams and chairlifts (strap in – some of those drops are 5,000ft). There are two included full-day excursions. There are around 200 miles of hiking and cycling trails ranging from charming to challenging, or there’s river kayaking and Segway riding, while adrenaline junkies might appreciate the paragliding, canyoning or whitewater rafting. The food, beer and wine are what you’d expect from Alpine Austria – fantastic, and cheaper too in summer. You also get the St. Anton Active summer card which gives a lot of benefits including one day free use of the cable cars from the village.
