Dubrovnik & Croatia’s Dalmation Coast Exclusive to Newell’s TRAVEL

Fully escorted small group tour 6th May 2017 • 9 days Travel from Cornwall included

£1,199 pp Personally Escorted Tour with Lisa Holdroff from Newell’s TRAVEL

I am so excited to be escorting this holiday to Croatia, a country which I last visited in 1990. The Dalmatian Coast with its rugged coastline and thousands of tiny islands is surrounded by the clearest waters of the Mediterranean, making a beautiful backdrop to our trip. A little way off shore lies the beautiful island of Korcula, its scenery is made up of small coastal villages and medieval towns set against a backdrop of pine trees and mountains. We will spend a couple of nights here to really explore the island. Back on the mainland I am very much looking forward to seeing Dubrovnik again. The Renaissance city with its jumble of narrow streets lined with red tiled roofs will, I am sure, be a highlight of our trip. A walk along the city walls is a great way to see some of the older parts of the city, views that will remain in your memory long after you arrive back home. The activity level of this trip is only leisurely to moderate and the relaxed itinerary is mainly based around sightseeing and exploring. The walks that we will be doing are around towns and cities and a couple of gentle day walks. It is deemed suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness. Please contact us early to reserve your space as the group size is small, generally between 12 and 16 plus the group leader.

IS THIS THE TRIP FOR YOU? This is a relaxed itinerary mainly based around sightseeing and exploring. There is a fair amount of walking around towns and cities and a couple of gentle day walks, some of the paths are rocky so some good shoes are worth packing. The walks are suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness. Activity Level 2: Leisurely/moderate. WHAT’S INCLUDED - Personally Escorted by Lisa Holdroff (Falmouth office) - Small Group 12 - 16 plus leader. Min age 16yrs - Standard return rail ticket Cornwall/Devon to Heathrow Airport - Overnight airport hotel at Heathrow - 8 nights hotels all en suite · All breakfasts and one picnic lunch included · Travel by private bus, boat and local ferry HIGHLIGHTS · UNESCO cities of Split, Trogir and Dubrovnik · Europe’s most beautiful coastlines · Visit Mljet National Park · Wine tasting on Peninsula Peljesac In association with

Two African Experiences South Africa

W

orking in the travel industry for over 20 years I have been lucky enough to visit some really wonderful destinations. However, the stand out one by an absolute mile has to be my trip to South Africa to see the ‘Big 5’. The overnight flights and, the fact the time difference is only 2 hours ahead of the UK, means no jet lag! You can get straight into the enjoyment of your holiday the moment you land. Granted, for most people the allure of Capetown with its Garden Route and the Winelands is the big draw, for me, however, it was to see the ‘Big 5’ and the city of Johannesburg. Jo’burg is a vibrant city and just begging to be explored, it has a big ‘creative side’ and this is most noticeable around the trendy inner city precincts of Braamfontein, Maboneng and Newtown, and also boasts some incredible heritage sites related to the struggle against apartheid - many of which have been developed into world-class museums like Lilieslief Farm, which became the undercover meeting place for Nelson Mandela and the ANC. Four days were spent whiling away time between the Rosebank area, Jo’burgs eclectic tree lined neighbourhood of eateries, designer outlets and boutiques. Soweto which has been regenerated and is really worth a day pottering around the markets and going to Vilikazi Street home to two Nobel Prize Winners, Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu, and Maboneng where I took a Red Bus Tour to see most of the major sights of this fascinating city including the Carlton Tower where you get a 360 degree perspective of this fascinating metropolis. Then it was time to make the 4 hour drive away from the city to the Marakele National Park and the Marataba Lodge, home for the next two nights. This is a malaria free ‘Big Five’ Safari Lodge in its own private 85,000 acre game reserve, offering traditional game drives, bush walks, and water safari on their lake. Boasting only 15 luxury tents this is by no means crowded and with only 4 or 5 vehicles you are not going to meet other guests when out on game drives. Marataba also has a Trail Lodge in a separate area of the reserve where you literally take daily bush walks from the lodge to get as up close to the ‘Big 5’ as possible instead of using vehicles. The game viewing was beyond anything that I ever expected and whilst bumping around in the open safari vehicle, leaving plumes of dust in our wake, I was lucky 4

enough to see white rhino, elephants, zebra, giraffe, monkey, baboon, impala, kudu, springbok, wildebeest, warthog, black & brown hyaena, bat eared foxes, hippo, birds like you would not believe, lions & cheetahs. They also have black rhino & leopard, however, they were elusive...maybe next time! Sadly the time came to say “Goodbye Marataba” and in deed South Africa but with a plethora of memories locked away to be recalled several times over during wet dreary Cornish days. ook no further... South Africa and especially Kwa Zulu Natal has it all. Pristine beaches, the culture of the Zulu tribes, historical battlefields, the awe inspiring scenery of the Drakensberg and if that wasn’t enough you have the ‘Big 5’ Safari. With over 20 rand to the £1 it also costs a lot less than you think! Kwa Zulu Natal, or KZN as they call it in South Africa, is just one of 9 provinces, the scale of the country is almost unfathomable. From touchdown in Durban the welcome could not be warmer, South Africans are, on the whole, a happy bunch and they love tourists. Many people at this point choose to do their own fly drive holiday and, as they drive on the same side as us, it couldn’t be easier. Car hire and petrol is very cheap and the main roads are straight and almost empty. In this one province alone there’s a wealth of activities, so something for all the family. Great beach resorts both to the north and south of Durban and the most amazing safari camps where you can jump in to your 4x4 open top safari jeep and really get up close to the animals. I’ve been feet away from a curious elephant and it’s so thrilling you almost forget to breathe! Another draw to this part of the world is the ever increasing popularity of the battlefield tours. The battle of Rorkes Drift was a battle in the Anglo-Zulu war when 150 British troops successfully defended the garrison against an intense assault by 4,000 Zulu warriors. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders. It’s impossible to comprehend the bravery and determination of this small band of brothers. In stark contrast, within 12 km, are the bloody battlefields of Isandlwana where some 2,000 British soldiers lost their lives. The battlefields tour guides breathe life in to these amazing stories set against the stunning backdrop of endless African landscape. Even if this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea it’s well worth making a detour. You’ll come away enthralled and entranced such is the talent and passion of these storytellers! Even the film Zulu doesn’t do it justice but this trip made me want to watch it as soon as I got home! The real beauty of KZN is the stunning landscapes and nowhere more so than the Drakensberg which is a national park and a World Heritage Site. Great for walkers and “twitchers” alike, there is quad biking, hiking and the best helicopter ride money can buy (and probably the cheapest). If that all sounds too energetic, Drakensberg is also a place of great peace and tranquillity and there’s always the hotel spa! BEST TIME TO GO: May - October is cooler but good for game viewing, October - November is pleasant beach weather and brings out the flowers in the Drakensberg area. November - February enjoys hotter weather but, on the plus side, lots of babies to encounter on your safari! South Africa and KZN have so much to offer, fantastic hotels, amazing safaris, heart stopping thrills and world class cuisine, not to mention the superb selection of wine and exceptional value for money! What are you waiting for? Your next adventure awaits you! Jackie Wall - Senior Travel Consultant, Bodmin office 5

Lisbon

P O R T U G AL L

ooking for a city break? Flying from a local airport? Why not consider Lisbon, with its simple charm, Southern European weather and oodles of history. Portugal’s capital is a compact city that is blissfully easy to explore, and only just over 2 hours direct flight away from Bristol Airport. Lisbon is a year round destination which is rarely too hot or cold, although many of the city’s restaurants and bars shut down for August. Century old, yellow wooden trams and iron funiculars lurch and rumble over the city’s seven steep hills. The metro system is more modern, with the recently opened airport station providing the easiest and quickest access to the city centre. I found it a magical place, as beautiful as Paris, but with a fantastic harbour setting. Indeed, following a devastating earthquake in the 17th Century, parts of the city were rebuilt in the Parisian style. For example, the main thoroughfare – Avenue da Liberdade is modelled after Paris’s Avenue des Champs-Elysees. I stayed at the 4* Hotel do Chiado, which had a fabulous roof top terrace and breakfast room with panoramic views across the city to the ‘must visit’ Sao Jorge Castle. The hotel is named after the district it is located in, which is famous for its shopping. Indeed the hotel was once a department store! Lisbon’s compact size means walking around the historic city centre is easy, strolling down to the waterfront to sit with a coffee and just people watch, or see the boats come and go. Visit the area around the 500 year old Belem Tower, and the nearby ‘Discoveries Monument’, the symbol of modern Lisbon. Whilst in the area, don’t forget to visit the famous ‘Pasteis de Belem’ to see the famous ‘Pasteis de Nata’ – Custard

Tarts being made and perhaps sample a few. If you do, I guarantee some will be returning home with you! Make sure you go on a tram, which are not just best used for uphill journeys! Try tram number 28 for a circular tour through the theatre and shopping district of Chiado, the nightlife district of Bairro Alto, and the historic district of Estrela which is dominated by its huge basilica. Part of Lisbon’s charm is the ability to visit the nearby cities of Sintra and Cascais, both are within 45 minutes travelling time by train. Don’t be afraid to use the trains, they are cheap and very regular, and both destinations are at the end of the line! Sintra is the former summer residence of the Portuguese Royal Family. It is situated in the mountains and has ornate palaces and castles. Cascais is a beach resort with an historic centre full of quality restaurants that are famous for their seafood. I have to admit that Lisbon was not a destination that I had even considered, prior to my visit. Its unique charms as an historic capital city, plus the opportunity of spending a day in the mountains, and one in a genteel beach resort make Lisbon a highly recommended destination. fter joining Newell’s TRAVEL a year ago as Marketing Co-Ordinator and after a very busy time, it was my turn to have a holiday. I did not have a big budget (£1000 for two) but did have a week to play with. Talking not only to Helen but also Steph from the Truro office, I was asked “Where do you want to go?” “I don’t know, I would like it to be hot” was my reply I can imagine that this is the conundrum that most travel agents face every day, customers with no idea what they want or where they want to go. Knowing I was in good hands and after months of looking at images of amazing places for marketing purposes the choice seemed endless. It was so good to be able to talk directly with a real person to make a decision, rather than spend hours looking up endless recommendations on the internet. The decision was made to go to Portugal. I had been there before many years ago, and although the weather could be hit or miss at that time of year (April) I was willing to take a chance. Living in Cornwall and with limited time, I did not want to waste my precious holiday time traveling to London to fly. This almost knocks two days off your holiday, so I decided to fly locally from Exeter Airport (only 2 hours away from where I live). I was so impressed, none of the bustle and crowds of the larger airports, which can be very stressful. This was a completely different experience. We parked the car and had a short walk with our hand luggage across the car park and into the terminal. It was very early in the morning but we were still greeted with smiles, it didn’t feel like sheep being herded into a pen when going through security. We couldn’t believe how easy it was. 8

Arriving in Faro very early it felt like we had the whole day in front of us, we hired a car and drove to Luz, not far from Lagos. We stayed in a self-catering apartment at an amazing hotel called Estrela Da Luz with clean facilities, indoor pool and spa. It was a great tonic to be staying somewhere so nice and in a stunning part of the Algarve, with it’s dramatic coastline and white sandy beaches. The cost of living is much like home, the supermarkets have everything you need. We ate out a couple of evenings but mostly had food in our apartment. There was one bonus though, I don’t usually try cheap wine, but at one euro a carton it was cheaper than water so I thought I would give it a go, I had no complaints. (I did try the Spanish carton just to compare and that did go down the sink) Luz is lovely, great bars, restaurants, gift shops (if I had not travelled with hand luggage only, I would have brought home trinkets galore). A walk along Luz’s promenade at night with the sea in the background and the lights twinkling in the palm trees, is what holidays are made of. Louise Hillier - Marketing Co-ordinator Recommendations My partner owns and runs a microlight centre in Cornwall, so it was only right for him to seek out the nearest light aircraft runway to get his flying fix. I had been flying on many occasions but never in a Gyrocopter, I would say if you get a chance, have a go (making sure you are insured correctly, of course). All the pictures were taken by me in the back seat and what a view!

Queensland

his trip was a fantastic insight into the friendly laid back lifestyle of the Aussie’s. I have been a Premier Australian specialist for many years so when this opportunity came I couldn’t wait to experience the destination. Australia is the size of Europe so when planning any itinerary you need to take into consideration the vastness of the country. We went in June, Australia’s winter, which is generally the best time to visit Queensland as the climate is dry and warm around 75°F, plus there are no jellyfish in the sea at this time of the year. We flew from Heathrow with Qantas via Singapore. Singapore airport has fantastic facilities for travellers transiting at the airport. The Rain Forest Reef is a spa area where you are able to have quality, reasonably priced treatments from £5.00 or a must have shower which includes a towel, soap, shampoo for £3.00. We arrived into Brisbane local time 07:00 after a 22 hour flight and were whisked away to Brisbane Zoo the home of the Crocodile Hunter. The zoo is approximately 1 hour from Brisbane and a ‘must see’ for animal lovers who love getting up close and personal. You can cuddle a koala, feed the kangaroos, have a snake wrapped around you and watch fantastic crocodile and bird shows. After the cuddles at the zoo we headed to our accommodation, Novotel Twin Waters Noosa Sunshine Coast. This accommodation is a great family resort with direct access to the deserted beach. The resort has its own golf course with kangaroos roaming the course and a lake for water sports and bikes for hire. Sunshine Coast has miles of deserted beaches very unspoilt and doesn’t have lots of hotels along the coast line like the Gold Coast. We went shopping in Noosa and I was taken aback by the sheer friendliness of the staff, asking me if we were having a lovely holiday and where we were from and going to. We stayed 2 nights at the Stamford Plaza in Brisbane which was a very nice central hotel right in the heart of the shopping district. The river was a 2 minute stroll where you could get the ferry crossing over to Brisbane’s Botanical Gardens which had a huge shallow free public pool and BBQ area’s right in the heart of the city. When we arrived on Hamilton Island we were picked up by a multimillion pound luxury yacht (wow, how some people live) and transferred to Hayman Island. This island 10

NEWS

LIA is pure luxury with elegant rooms and beautiful public areas. The beach is pebbly and has very coarse sand. We had a catamaran trip to Airlie Beach which is a seaside resort on Australia’s mainland and the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands for excursions and transfers to the islands. Airlie Beach is very popular with backpackers and offers more variety of reasonably priced accommodation. Hamilton Island is the most commercial Whitsunday Island, it is versatile and offers several options of accommodation choices ranging from private villas, bungalows to hotel rooms. The only transportation on the island is by golf buggy which is very good fun. There are plenty of activities on the island, it has a Koala Wildlife Park and zip wire on One Tree Hill. There are plenty of restaurants and bars down on the marina. We went on a full day excursion with Reef World out to the Great Barrier Reef. I did a little snorkelling and went on the underwater submarine. The reef is beautiful but commercialised with excursions. Cairns is a rugged lively Australian city with plenty of bars, restaurants and local shopping. There are more Aborigine people roaming the streets in Cairns which gives it an authentic feel of the Outback. There is no beach in Cairns but a lovely esplanade with a free public outside pool and BBQ areas. We went on a fantastic excursion to Kuranda Sky Rail and Tjapukai, if you only get the chance to do one excursion this one I would highly recommend. We started by going up the mountain by scenic rail to finish in the village of Kuranda where there are markets and shops. We came back down over the rainforest by cable car, stopping twice to do nature walks. Tjapukai Aboriginal Culture Park provides a real insight into the history of the Aboriginal people and their culture. Port Douglas is my favourite resort in Queensland, it’s just how I envisioned Queensland to be. Port Douglas is very

colonial and cosmopolitan with low rise buildings, a bustling marina with stylish boutiques and outdoor restaurants. It is only 1 hour’s drive north from Cairns. They have a development free 4 mile beach with beautiful golden sands. We went on Quicksilver Outer Barrier Reef excursion which I found over crowded with 100’s of people on board. There are other barrier reef tours which cater for smaller groups. We went on the Daintree walkabout which is fantastic for nature lovers. I have a phobia of snakes so kept freaking out at the littlest noises. For me this trip was one of the best experiences I have ever had, and is a tick off my bucket list. I will return! D i s n e y l a n d PARIS I

love taking my children to Disneyland Paris, but then who wouldn’t? We have been lucky enough to go quite a few times now, so I feel there isn’t much left that I don’t know about Disneyland Paris. Regarding ways to get there, I find the easiest way is using the Eurostar Disney Direct Service from London St Pancras or Ashford (Kent). It takes you right to the heart of Disney! I have stayed at all the onsite hotels apart from the Disneyland Hotel. I have to say my favourite is the Sequoia Lodge. The theme is forest lodge which I thought was great. It is also within walking distance to the Disney parks and village. The parks themselves are just wonderful. It brings out the child in you the minute you enter and you find you get just as excited as your children when you see the characters wandering around. I generally visit at the quieter time of year and try never to include a weekend in our stay as the queue times on the rides will more than double. The good thing about staying in a Disney hotel is you are entitled to what they call “Magical Hours”. This means you are able to enter the Disneyland Park either 2 hours before it opens to the general public or stay 2 hours later depending on the time of year. This is great for rides such as Peter Pan, Dumbo etc, as we found these can sometimes be the longest and most popular queues for the little ones. We find 3 nights 4 days is the minimum amount of time required that will allow you to experience both parks and to enjoy the village. I have to say The Rain Forest Cafe is a must for your evening meal. The whole atmosphere of an indoor rainforest with lightening and a thunderstorm is great. If anyone needs any advice or help on planning or booking their Disney holiday please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. Tamsyn Goad - Travel Consultant, Liskeard office 12

so good they named it twice!

s long as I can remember, a visit to the Big Apple has been top of my list of places to visit, so if you’re like me, you need to take the plunge and visit this amazing city it was everything I expected and much, much more.... Manhattan surprised me the most, with many of the exciting attractions and places to visit, all within walking distance although comfy shoes are a must. Otherwise jump into one of the many yellow cabs that can be found a few steps from wherever you are, at reasonable prices, alternatively hop onto one of the open top buses to make the most of your time taking in this fantastic city. To get the best value out of our visit, we pre-booked a New York City Pass, this offered entry into the main attractions plus many more discounts off food, shopping and more. I loved visiting the many viewing-points high above the city. My favourite being the Rockefeller Centre, with wonderful views across Central Park on one side and the beautiful iconic Empire State Building on the other. On a clear day you can see down to the Financial District with the new World Trade Centre and Lady Liberty in the distance. Circle Line Cruises offer a trip over to the Statue of Liberty which also takes in the views of the famous skyline, taking you under the historic Brooklyn Bridge. This really is the city that never sleeps. 4/5 nights in one of the many hotels should be enough time for you to take in all of the sites like Grand Central Station, the Natural History Museum, 9/11 Memorial, the Guggenheim Museum , or one of the many art museums dotted around the island. Maybe take in a Broadway Show, explore Central Park and, of course, don’t forget the shopping and some of the finest restaurants in the world! I really loved New York and can’t wait to return in the future. Steph Borys - Senior Travel Consultant, Truro office 15

NEWS

A little bi t of ou r h i s tory a t N e w ell’s N ewell’s TRAVEL began its life in 1962 when Mr Warren Newell opened a small office in Market Street, Falmouth. Unfortunately, Mr Newell Snr died suddenly and his son, Simon Newell, then took up the mantle before retiring in 1989 when the present day owner, Roger Hawke, purchased the 2 branch business, a second office having already opened in Redruth, before a third office quickly followed in Truro. In 1990, following our marriage, Helen also became a Partner of the company. The next target was Hayle, followed closely by the acquisition of Vista Travel in Saltash, now our fifth branch. More acquisitions followed in October 2005 when the Alan Skinner Travel offices in Saltash, Looe and Kingsbridge came under the Newell’s TRAVEL banner. Subsequently the 2 Saltash offices were amalgamated into one and sadly, our Looe office was closed due to the economic downturn but with no staff casualties. When Astbury Travel went into receivership in May 2007, we were asked to try to revive the fortunes of some of their former branches and we are delighted to say that we now trade very successfully from Tavistock and Liskeard. 18

Finally, in May 2012 Newell’s TRAVEL were asked to intervene when Vacation World Travel got into financial difficulties, not only saving the branches in Helston, Newquay and Bodmin but also giving future employment to 10 of their former staff. Along with the 11 High Street retail locations, Newell’s TRAVEL also operate a Business Travel department dedicated to booking busy company executives on their business journeys to the 4 corners of the world, saving them precious time to carry out their work and not have to worry about their travel arrangements. We also operate a Group Travel department from our satellite office in Bristol. Here we organise a varied choice of holidays chosen by group leaders and social secretaries who need help and support throughout the booking process. Some of our corporate leisure groups include ASDA, U3A’s, Mercedes and the Civil Services to name but a few. Newell’s TRAVEL has grown to be the largest independent travel agency group in Cornwall and Devon and recognised by our peers as the leader in our field, having won many national industry awards.

Career history – Helen Hawke

Career history – Roger Hawke

I left school at 16, on top of my game quite literally, with county honours in soccer and rugby. Having spent most of my time on the sports field it still remains a mystery how I achieved CSE grade 1s in Maths, Geography, Technical Drawing and Woodwork. Having discounted the many and varied careers then available to me I opted to maximise my geographical skills and become a Travel Agent. My career began on 28th December 1970 at Park Travel St Austell on a starting salary of £6.10s.0d. per week…….. the only way was up! After a mere two years ECC Travel Services headhunted me and I was appointed manager of their St Austell branch on £40.00 per month (new money by then). My reputation went before me, and in 1986 Mr Simon Newell invited me to become a partner in his travel agency – the aptly named Newell’s Travel. Three years later, Simon decides to retire and I purchase the business becoming the sole proprietor. My life took another turn for the better soon after when I met a girl from Manchester on an agents Fam trip to Portugal and she later became my wife. Helen and I have just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary!

From a very young age the only career I ever wanted was to be a travel agent, not an air hostess or overseas travel representative (much to the frustration of my careers officer at school). Upon leaving school my wish came true. Born in the Northwest of England my first job was with W H Smith Travel in Manchester. 2 years later I moved south to Essex and I worked for another couple of years for Hogg Robinson Travel in East Ham and London EC3. My career path in the “big city” was set! The same month that I reached the grand old age of 20, I was offered a familiarisation trip to Portugal by the Portuguese Tourist Board. Then and there my life plan changed drastically. On the same trip was a Cornishman from ECC Travel St Austell, Roger Hawke. We met, we fell in love and within 15 months I had transferred with Hogg Robinson Travel to the Southwest. In 1989 ECC Travel in Truro became part of the now growing Newell’s TRAVEL. The time was now right for me to join the Newell’s team. The rest as they say is history…..

NEWS

M Y L I F E i n T rav el We thought you would like a little insight into a travel agents life so we asked our staff a few questions Do you remember the first booking you made? Oh that’s hard to remember 32 years ago!!! I think it may have been a camping holiday for a family to France??? What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? A family holiday to South Africa, business class flights and five star hotels, came to about £30k!! What’s been your favourite fam trip and why was it so good? That’s a difficult one?? There have been so many. I think Australia, it was so amazing to fly over all these weird and wonderful places and then to land somewhere that felt so much like home. My trip to Los Angeles last year was pretty memorable too, what with meeting Arnie and all! Who is your favourite customer? Years ago I had an elderly gentleman who booked his coach holidays with us, I used to go round and have tea with him once a month. Only problem was he used to make tongue sandwiches! Yuk ! What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? Oh so many! Champagne, flowers, chocolates. My favourite has to be a necklace that clients brought me back from Sri Lanka, so kind. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? Doing the window display and getting stuck with legs apart and that had to be the day I had worn a skirt!! Some workmen passing by said it was better than Amsterdam. If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? Oh this is tricky??? James Bond, would like to try out all the gadgets. Where would you like your career to be in 10 years time? Still at Newell’s TRAVEL Saltash with my zimmer frame!!! What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? Do it, it’s the best job in the world. Everyone is happy about what they are doing and the travel opportunities are amazing.

Do you remember the first booking you made? It was 33 years ago, so I really can’t remember!! What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? I once booked an extended family trip to Walt Disney World. Their son, unfortunately, had a terminal illness. I shall never forget his beaming face when he was told where he was going. They had a fabulous time and the Disney staff all treated them superbly. What’s been your favourite fam trip and why was it so good? The best one has to be a 10 day trip to Melbourne, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island. I had never had any interest in visiting Australia prior to this trip, but the sights I saw were so memorable and the people so welcoming. It has really whetted my appetite to visit Australia again one day. Who is your favourite customer? I really enjoy it when I am able to offer extra advice for a destination I have visited myself. When the customers come back and thank me for my recommendations, it really makes my day!! What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? I had a gift of a Cunard decanter from a customer who travelled on the QE2’s complete World Cruise every year. He already had one from the previous year!! But, to me, as a bit of a ship fanatic, it has become a treasured possession. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? Being stretchered off a full car ferry car deck in my underpants - don’t ask!! If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? I’d love to be David Attenborough. The locations and nature that man has seen are astounding.

Rachel Gill - Manager, Saltash office

Chris Jago - Senior Travel Consultant, Truro office

Where would you like your career to be in 10 years time? I am so fortunate to do a job I love, in a beautiful part of the World, that I would be perfectly happy to stay where I am thanks! What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? If you have a true love of travel, and enjoy interacting with people, go for it!! It’s THE best job.
