CubaGuide Welcome to The Revolution!!
I
don’t mean the Revolution that started in 1953, ending with Fidel Castro coming into power in 1959, I mean the revolution of a country that has been stuck in its past since then and is now just starting to emerge into a more modern world. With the news that Obama is allowing US citizens to visit, things are slowly on the change. This is the time to visit, whilst there are no big signs for Coca Cola or McDonalds, in fact the only advertising you see is for the celebration of Che Guevara’s life and the Revolution, or to let you know where a local place of interest is! Cuba is amazing! I visited recently with Cuba Holidays (who do the visas for you). Havana is full of amazing buildings, mainly crumbling, with colourful washing lines across the old windows and families crowded into them. Quite a few are being restored now and some new hotels are being built. The streets are full of wonderful old classic cars – my biggest 4

recommendation is to go for at least a 2 hour tour in one of them. You will see the highlights of Havana and see the happy people and hear snatches of the wonderful music as you drive along the seafront with the wind in your hair – great stuff!! Take a walk around the old town and see the beautiful cathedral, visit the bars made famous by Ernest Hemmingway (and take a trip to visit his house) and maybe try a Daiquiri or Mojito. There is a great atmosphere and you feel totally safe. Colourful art is everywhere and people dressed in wonderful outfits. We also visited the Cigar Factory, the Rum Factory and went to a fun cabaret show, at The Club Tropicana, in the evening. There are some great hotels to stay in, like the Hotel Nacional, the Parc Central or the Inglaterra or you can stay in a casa with a local family and have your own front door key. If you want to see amazing limestone mountains and caves, go and visit the Valle de Vinales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is great for the adventurous, you can go hiking, biking, climbing, horse riding and zip lining… it’s not too far from Havana and you could stay a night or two at the Los Jazmines hotel, if you wished, or even just visit for a day by bus! Driving south from Havana you can visit another UNESCO World Heritage town, Trinidad. This is an amazing place, all cobblestones and cowboys!! It attracts visitors from around the globe. Stunning streets with small multi-coloured houses, a fabulous central church and art and music everywhere. Stay in a casa here for at least a night to experience the culture of the old country. You can even stay on a ranch if you fancy! On our way to Varadero and the beautiful beach, we visited the Che Guevara Monument and site of one of the battles of the Revolution. There is a museum and it is quite atmospheric. We went through various other small towns on our way and visited a few families with rooms in casa’s to rent. They love having guests and I read their 5

amazing visitor books. This is the way to see the real Cuba and try the local dishes and cigars! There are lots of amazing tourist beach resorts in Cuba. The nearest to Havana is Varadero, if you want the quickest transfers for a two-centre stay. There are some stunning, big and varied hotels here, catering for all needs, from families to adults only. Lots of entertainment and a great choice of food. The beaches are truly beautiful. White sand and aqua sea. You can even swim with dolphins or go deep-sea fishing. The hotels all have wonderful spas too, and some have private cabanas for real chill time.
For a real small island experience, visit the Cayos, off the north coast, here the flamingos wade in the sea, which is teeming with exotic fish. Sit back and forget the world for a while. To the east of Cuba is Guardalavaca, stunningly set against green hills, there are miles of beaches and lots of activities to enjoy. You can also go inland from here to visit the heart of Cuba for a different experience. Cuba Holidays offer tours and cruises too….. so take a brochure and have a look…… and book a holiday soon. Visit Cuba now, before the past is lost forever. Jules Amis - Assistant Manager, Saltash Branch

Discovering C A NADA
C
anada is a destination I have wanted to visit for years, even more so when I started working in travel over 2 years ago. When the opportunity arose, there was no hesitation and soon enough, I was on my way! We travelled in late April, this is Canada’s Spring season which was the perfect time to go in my opinion; as it’s not too hot, and providing you wrap up, it’s not too cold either, especially with the amount of walking you do. We flew direct from Heathrow to Toronto with Air Canada, which is a brilliant airline and the flight took just over 7 hours. With a time difference of 5 hours behind GMT, we landed and had the entire day to explore the city. After dropping our luggage at our accommodation, the ‘Sheraton Centre Hotel,’ we of course wanted to visit the famous CN Tower. With the tower being over 450m high, you can guess how amazing the views are of the city! This is a must see when visiting Toronto, as it’s one of the most famous and popular attractions with an admission fee of only $33 per adult. With Niagara Falls only just under 2 hours away, we 8
thought it would be rude not to go. Titan, who organised this tour, had arranged for us, not only to have a boat trip to Niagara, but also to fly over the Falls! What a great experience this was, to see Niagara Falls from above and below was absolutely incredible and something I highly recommend. We made our way to the Capital of Canada, Ottawa. With the journey taking just over 4 hours by coach, we soon arrived and what a beautiful place this is. We stayed at the ‘Lord Elgin’ which is located in the centre, close to restaurants, bars and a minutes walk to the main attractions. Ottawa has a lot to offer for all age groups, including historic sites such as the Parliament Buildings, which date back to 1867, local markets, jazz and tulip festivals, museums and much more. Quebec is another stunning province, it’s like being in France! The scenery is sensational, with cobbled streets and pretty buildings, not to mention the lovely cuisine. Montréal was our final destination, and what a great end to a brilliant trip. Like Toronto, the city is buzzing and there is plenty to see and do. We stayed in the ‘Best Western Ville Marie’, located just 5 minutes’ walk from the biggest shopping area I have ever seen! It not only offers great shopping but restaurants, bars, museums and markets to enjoy and explore. I would also recommend taking a city tour so you can see the main sites in Montréal and perhaps visit some of them later at your leisure. Summing up Canada = Big, Bold, Breathtaking. ith direct flights to Lake Garda from Bristol operating on Saturdays and a flight time of under 2 hours, Inghams will soon whisk you away from Verona airport to the lakeside resorts of Garda. The Gardone Riviera is a small resort on the western shore of Lake Garda and has the most beautiful promenade along the lakeside with a choice of bars, restaurants, shops and churches. Inghams feature the Chalet Hotel Galeazzi and Grand Hotel Gardone set directly on the lake with stunning views and balconies overlooking the lake. The nearby resort of Salo offers a small lakeside square which hosts live music on Thursday evenings, this is a magical night with all the lights twinkling and shimmering by the lake. From Gardone ferries and private speedboats offer easy access to the other resorts around the lake perfect for exploring the very different resorts such as Malcesine with it’s cable car up to Monte Baldo and views down over the lake. Visit Bardolino with its weekly lakeside market and famous for it’s red wines. Try an ‘aperitivo’ in Garda- the lake is renowned for it’s “Hugo” prosecco, elderflower syrup, ice, sparkling water & a sprig of mint very refreshing whilst Sirmione has the biggest and best selection of ice creams! For a bit of pampering why not try the Hotel Olivi Thermae & Natural Spa in Sirmione with two heated thermal pools and a range of beauty treatments & massage. The nearby city of Verona has plenty to offer from Romeo and Juliet’s balcony to the Roman Arena which is used to host the summer Opera programme (late June to August) as well as great shops from your favourite Italian designers! You’ll find so much to do on Lake Garda maybe a week’s not enough!

I
started to work for Wickers World in Wadebridge back in 2004 and continued until, sadly, the owner passed away. I was then lucky enough to be offered a job in the Business Travel department of Newell’s TRAVEL based in Falmouth. This was a completely new experience for me having come from retail to now dealing with business travellers, from large companies, who needed to get to their destinations at a much faster pace. I loved it. I then left to have my little girl in 2013 and returned back to Falmouth but this time to the retail department. In January of this year I moved to cover maternity leave in Liskeard, which meant less travelling for me and then in May I was lucky enough to be offered a position in our Bodmin branch which means even less travelling! I am now full time in Bodmin and love it, especially since I have started to see some of my previous Wickers World clients and they recognise me and are happy to book with me straight away.
N E W Q U AY BRANCH MOVE Newell’s TRAVEL moved to plush new premises in Newquay. After many years of trading from tiny and squashed offices just off Bank Street, the opportunity to move to a far bigger office right on the main street was not to be missed. Now in 57 Bank Street, the branch boasts a lavish retail area plus a further comfortable lounge upstairs where appointments can be made and privacy can be guaranteed. There is also a superbly appointed rear decking area where, in the summer, clients will be encouraged to take in the views of Newquay Bay whilst selecting their next holiday. M Y L I F E i n T rav el We thought you would like a little insight into a travel agents life so we asked our staff a few questions Do you remember the first booking you made? Not clearly as it was many years ago, but I think it was a couple who wanted a week in Portugal and we used Intasun for those who can remember back that far! – I was very nervous as I had no travel experience. I was a qualified dental assistant and changed my career path, I came in as the office junior! in 1988! What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? A tour of the Palaces of India, the passengers travelled business class – I’d never booked that before and they stayed in the Oberoi chain of hotels. The whole trip was so exotic. What’s been your favourite fam trip and why was it so good? I have been very lucky with my fam trips but the best was with Travelpack as they took me to India and I was able to see the diversity of a country for myself, from children who have nothing but smile all the time to gold buildings and palaces so rich it made me cry. Who is your favourite customer? I have a few favourites and they are all different. They may book three holidays a year to Reid’s Palace on Madeira and give me funny life stories to try and follow, or they may have children the same age as myself and we have shared their growing years, but they have all become firm friends as well. What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? Flowers from a new customer who had been recommended to me and was thrilled with the service they received, but I love getting chocolate just as much lol. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? In 1989, when the customer realised that I was out of my depth and talking about somewhere completely different to where they asked for. If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? I would love to be Julia Roberts, she has been in some amazing movies and played opposite some gorgeous men, she is also a very grounded actress. Where would you like your career to be in 10 years time? I would like to be experiencing some of the amazing holidays I have booked for others and working in my office part time. What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? DO IT, its great fun. You meet lots of interesting people and get to create some amazing dreams for clients. Do you remember the first booking you made? My first booking was a young group of girls to Faliraki in Rhodes. I had just returned from a season out there, so I had great knowledge of the area and was able to answer any questions they had along with any concerns their parents had. It all went smoothly and the group had a fantastic time on their first holiday without parents. What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? I have many memorable bookings but one that stands out was a surprise trip to Paris for a client’s wife, staying in the best hotel in Paris, travelling by Private jet. I organised reservations at some of the finest restaurants in the City to make the trip memorable for our clients. What’s been your favourite fam trip and why was it so good? I’ve been very lucky to visit some amazing countries, but my most favourite has to be Sri Lanka. This has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world , the views, culture and people are second to none. Our guide was fantastic and made sure we saw all the amazing things this country has to offer. It was made extra special for me on our last day when we met Marnika the Asian elephant on arrival to our last hotel. After a group photo, our Guide had a quiet word with her mamut (handler) and she wrapped her trunk around me and picked me up. The next day I was able to sit on her while she had her daily wash and again to my surprise she gave me an elephant shower... Best experience ever!! Who is your favourite customer? All my regular customers are amazing!! and I’ve been lucky to have created friendships with many of them. I’ve been invited to many celebrations, weddings etc. and some will pre plan their visit to the office making sure I’m not on a day off. This makes me proud of the work I do. What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? A bottle of Bollinger champagne. I had clients who were very worried about travelling to Turkey but I put their mind at rest and booked a beautiful hotel in Kalkan where they had the most amazing holiday and look to return one day soon. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? Probably singing badly out loud in the shop while it was empty and not realising some clients had walked in... they said I have a lovely voice and should keeping singing but I know they were just being polite. If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? Ant McPartlin so I would get to spend the whole day with Declan Donnelly....... he really should have married me!!! Where would you like your career to be in 10 years time? I would ideally like to be here at Newell’s TRAVEL, and hopefully have ticked more off my “Places to Visit” list. What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? If you have a passion for travel and love interacting with some lovely clients then it’s the best job you can do and its very rewarding making someone’s dream holiday come true...
