Introducing

italy T

he countless delights of Italy have drawn generations of British travellers to the ancient, treasure-filled cities, rolling green hills and spectacular coastlines of this captivating country, and our love affair with Bella Italia remains as strong as ever. Follow in the footsteps of the Caesars in the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome, walking through the Forum and visiting the Colosseum, where gladiatorial combats once took place. Explore the incomparable artistic heritage of Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance, viewing the masterpieces on show at the Uffizi Art Gallery and discovering the city’s magnificent churches, palaces and museums. Experience the sublime beauty of Venice, a Caravaggio painting come to life, marvel at Pisa’s extraordinary Leaning Tower, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Puccini’s entrancing home city of Lucca or relax on the shore of lovely Lake Como. Heading south, you’ll find the spectacular Amalfi Coast, vibrant Naples, the remarkably well-preserved Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and sun-drenched Puglia, renowned for its olive groves and characteristic trulli houses. Meanwhile, Italy’s two largest islands each offer unique holiday experiences. Discover the ancient Greek temples and baroque palaces of Sicily or tour Sardinia, home to mysterious prehistoric ruins and some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful beaches.

Estelle’s view on Sicily

Sicily is the largest and most populated island in the Mediterranean. Located two miles from the main land. The island is surrounded by three different seas the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Ionian Sea, which has made it a strategic point of interest for many civilisations in both Europe and Northern Africa over the centuries. Having been in possession of several empires over the centuries, Sicily is a hugely fascinating place with a unique culture, beautiful scenery and interesting architecture. Mount Etna, Europe’s most forceful volcano, is also Sicily’s tallest mountain and most famous natural wonder. Mount Etna is located in the east of the island near Catania Airport. There are direct flights from Bristol, Gatwick and Heathrow to Catania. Many visitors stay in the beautiful stylish town of Taormina which boasts spectacular views over two bays and towards Mount Etna. Taormina is a small medieval town which clings to a hillside surrounded by tropical gardens. The enchanting town has a superb selection of restaurants, bars and cafes. There is a cable car down to the pebbled

beaches below where you can swim and snorkel among the lovely coves. One of Taormina’s main attractions is the magnificent Greek Theatre with fantastic views of the Bay of Naxos and Mount Etna. Taormina is very easy to get around on foot, therefore a car is not advised. I love Taormina’s ambiance and atmosphere. I would recommend a car if you want to see more of the island. From Catania take the spectacular coastal road to the ancient Greek city of Syracuse(approx 1 hour). Syracuse boasts a rich Greek history and culture and is the birth place of Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician. I stayed at Des Etrangers Hotel & Spa, which has fantastic views over the great harbour of Syracuse. Sicily has delicious cuisine and fine wines. Sicilian ice cream is probably the best in Italy! And that is saying something. Estelle Keating – Travel Consultant, Helston

Why visit Switzerland?

icturesque Switzerland is a haven for holidays by rail. From chocolate-box towns to chic modern cities, imposing mountains and rolling Alpine meadows, there’s never a dull moment as you travel through this incredible nation. For those looking for a laid-back escape, there may be no better destination to choose. Conveniently located in the heart of Europe, its attractions easily accessible by a range of public transport options, and most routes travelling past an array of natural vistas, from magnificent lakes to verdant fields topped with mountain crests, Switzerland has everything you could want from a relaxing holiday. Conversely, the thrill of a new and fascinating culture, steeped in centuries of unique tradition, offers something for the experienced traveller, with opportunities to explore this exclusive country’s many charms at length. So take to the rails, and discover the highlights of one of Europe’s best-loved destinations, travelling on the efficient trains and scenic routes that have become synonymous with Switzerland. In Switzerland, the railways and landscapes form a perfect marriage; the best way to move around the 8

not only navigating Switzerland’s mountains, but also displaying their spectacular beauty for passengers who take to the rails.

Our Swiss holidays

We believe there’s no better way to explore Switzerland than by rail, which is why we offer a range of exciting Swiss tours that make the most of scenic vistas and efficient rail networks this splendid country has to offer. Below are three of our favourite tours, selected for the variety of Swiss experiences they offer – from the convenience of our popular Fly:Rail options, to the charms of French-speaking Switzerland and the added comfort of 5-Star hotels and all inclusive service. Alpine scenery is by rail, and the best views of the landscape are often available by train. Travelling by rail is one of the most comfortable and rewarding ways to enjoy a holiday to Switzerland, allowing both superb Swiss efficiency for short hops, and slow-paced scenic stretches, allowing you ample time to soak up the views as you pass through spectacular mountain vistas and glorious countryside, unlike any other destination.

Classic Glacier Express Fly: Rail Explore scenic Swiss towns and embark on magical mountain rail journeys, on a classic adventure that includes journeys on the iconic Glacier Express and the charming Bernina Express. We’ve improved this popular mountain holiday with the convenience of return flights between London and Zurich, allowing you to experience the joy of rail for the more scenic parts of your journey.

Iconic scenery

Lake Geneva, Mont Blanc & St Bernard’s Based in Champéry, this 8-day tour takes in the delights of St Bernard, charming Swiss châteaux and the famous Mont Blanc Express, for a relaxing holiday by rail.

The true joy of a rail tour of Switzerland is that its numerous scenic and mountain railways provide easy access to some of the most awe-inspiring destinations in Europe. Switzerland also reinforces the observation that sometimes the journey is as great an experience as the destination, as you pause to admire some of the near-miraculous feats of engineering that were required to construct these railways.

Mountain adventures await

Some of the greatest feats of rail engineering are to be found in Switzerland, where the country’s stunning native mountains have been conquered by cog railways, scenic passes, and entire tunnels carved through solid rock,

Jungfrau Express 5-Star All Inclusive On this 9-day holiday, we stay at the 5-Star Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof in Grindelwald, a delightful destination from which to discover Switzerland’s breathtaking lake and mountain vistas. With all inclusive meals and selected drinks included alongside first class rail travel, 5-Star accommodation and our usual package of carefully-planned excursions and a professional Tour Manager, this is a superb way to explore Switzerland. 9

Barbados C

elebrating its 50th year of independence, Barbados is an island buzzing with exciting activities and beautiful hotspots - it has a lot to celebrate. Popular with celebrities and royals alike, I can see what attracts them to this island. Bridgetown the island capital, is popular with cruise companies, and offers colourful colonial buildings and tax free shopping. Around the island are beaches, botanical gardens, and so much more. Sunny and warm all year with only brief occasions of intense rain which clears to sunshine shortly afterwards. With lots on offer in the way of activities, enjoying the sea, sun and sand is just the start of your holiday experience on Barbados. You can discover the island, by renting a car or taking one of the many Island tours on offer. A Catamaran sunset cruise was a personal favourite, swimming with Turtles along with snorkelling shipwrecks which are home to scores of tropical fish, sailing the west coast taking in the sunset while enjoying a Rum punch and delicious local food, Amazing! Oistins, on Friday, comes alive, where locals meet visitors, serving plates of amazing local dishes, in the ballroom you can 3-step the night away, after a little more of that compulsory rum, of course. Harrison’s Cave a natural gem; a living limestone cavern in to the depths of the earth. The birthplace of rum – be sure to try a rum cocktail or two, take one of the Mount Gay Visitor Centre Tours, inviting you to discover the secrets behind Barbados’ finest and most celebrated spirit, you will experience the history of Mount Gay Rum as you’re taken on a journey of the rich heritage and the time proven craftsmanship of the world’s oldest rum. What surprised me about Barbados was the Island feel, their hospitality, Barbados’ warm island culture helped me to understand why people return year on year. There really is something here for all ages, some flock to the livelier and more reasonably priced South coast for the family-friendly resorts, nightlife and the island’s prime wind and kite surfing spots, while the fashionable west coast plays host to the island’s iconic resorts, chic hotels and impossibly clear calmer waters. Restaurants to rival any the world over, most hotels offer room only, with upgrade options to include either

food or food and drink. But I feel you would be missing out on something special if you did this, and that is why I loved Barbados so much and hope to return one day. This beautiful island is big on personality, culture and unadulterated Caribbean indulgence, and has long been a favourite destination for those seeking the finer things in life. If you’re looking for a Caribbean island that blends old with the new, gorgeous sun, sea and sand Barbados is the place for you. Steph Borys – Sinior Travel Consultant, Truro

Lapland Lapland is a truly magical destination where children’s dreams do come true!

I

travelled on the Lapland day trip with Newmarket Holidays from Exeter which was very well organised. The flight to Pajala Airport took approximately 3 hours. The representatives gave goodie bags and chocolate coins as a welcome gift. We were served a warm breakfast on the flight. Once we had landed, they put us into groups of 40 for the days itinerary. This was great because it stopped everyone from having to queue for each experience. The journey to Santa’s Village only took 10 minutes. We drove past snow covered forests and the occasional log cabin. The local staff throughout the trip remained in Character to create an authentic atmosphere. When we got to Santa’s Village we were allocated our thermal clothing. Next we met the Huskies. They were incredibly strong as they pulled us through the glistening snow to take us to the snowmobiles. You can choose to drive your own snowmobile or simply sit back and take in the beautiful scenery of the snowy wilderness. After lunch it was time to search for Santa. We followed the lanterns through the magical forest to his secret log cabin. The children creek open the door and their eye’s light up with excitement as they get ready to give him their Christmas letter. The children receive a small gift, followed by a family photo opportunity. The final activity was a chance to meet the reindeers and enjoy a traditional sleigh ride. The last hour was spent as free time. Many families enjoyed this time by snowman building, snowball fights and sledging. We had a smooth check in onto our flight home. They served another hot meal on our return with Christmas music being played. My favourite part of the day was watching the families come out of their visits with Santa. The excitement on the children’s faces as they realised that Santa had been watching them was priceless! I would recommend that you experience this trip if you want to make memories that will last a lifetime. Alex Johnson – Travel Consultant, Truro 14

sri lanka I

have just returned from an amazing trip to Sri Lanka with Kuoni. We flew out of London on a 10 hour flight and then travelled down to the South Coast. I was travelling around and fortunate to visit Galle, Bentota, Udawalawe and Yala. Galle has a lovely old Dutch Fort with the streets inside having a Mediterranean feel to them. This is mainly due to the Dutch and Portuguese influence, which can be seen reflected in the architecture. Amongst the many wonderful sights and sounds that I was lucky enough to do was a safari in both Udawalawe and Yala National Parks. It was here that I saw the most amazing wildlife. I was extremely lucky to not only see a leopard close up but also to see Asian Elephants. One of which was very rare as it had tusks. I also went to the Elephant Orphanage which is part of the Born Free Foundation and where they look after injured and orphaned elephants from all over Sri Lanka. When they are well enough they get released in family groups into Udawalawe Safari Park. I had another safari around this park and saw more Elephants as well as crocodiles and other animals. We also went to the Turtle Hatchery where they look after injured turtles and help baby turtles find their way back to the ocean and give them a fighting chance at survival. Sri Lankan cuisine is varied however, it is mainly a base of fresh fish and rice interspersed with aromatic spices. You can even watch the locals at work pulling the nets into shore and in some places you still can view the infamous stilt fishermen. There are a number of restaurants that also cater to the western palate as the hotels also do. They also all offer the famous Ceylon tea. There are a variety of hotels ranging from the small, boutique to the large complexes that cater for all. This is a beautiful and diverse country where one moment you could be in the jungle the next in an arid location or looking at a wide, long beach with stunning views over the Indian Ocean, not forgetting the ancient cities, colourful temples and richness of culture. From what I saw of Sri Lanka this country caters for all ages and not only to those interested in Wildlife but also for those looking at a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle. You really can get the best of both worlds here. It was a stunning location and definitely one that I would like to go back and see more of, as I have made some fantastic memories. The most memorable of which was to see a Leopard walk in front of the jeep I was in without a care in the world. Emma Pierce – Travel Consultant, Truro 16

THE AWARDS KEEP COMING!

I

n recognition of our enormously successful first ever Cruise Show held at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay in October, The Travel Network Group awarded us the “Innovative Travel Agent of the Year.” Managing Director, Roger Hawke said “the event generated an unprecedented surge in our ocean and river cruise business. The public were able to talk face to face with all the world’s leading cruise companies and learn even more from the various seminars and presentations that went on throughout the day. The event will be repeated on Sunday 8th October 2017 again at the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay”.

n 2011 Newell’s TRAVEL increased their number of high street outlets to 11 following the take-over of 3 former Vacation World Travel shops after they ceased trading. In 2014 we were approached by Kuoni Holidays and our Truro branch then became a partnership store and received a complete refurbishment as part of the new relationship. After receiving numerous complimentary and flattering comments regarding our new colour scheme and office appearance, unlike our traditional yellow and blue which was now very dated, it was decided that we should embark on a new corporate image across the whole company. In 2015, it was the turn of Helston and Falmouth to be modernised and transformed and 2016 saw us move from our old shops in Liskeard, Newquay and Bodmin to newly refurbished premises. In Newquay the staff probably have one of the most stunning office environments anywhere in the UK to work. As well as a private consultation room on the first floor, we have also created a decking area at the back of the shop with wonderful views over Newquay Bay where clients are encouraged to browse any holiday brochures at their leisure. At the close of 2016, Bodmin branch moved on 1st December from within an Arcade to a more prominent position directly on the high street. An open day was held on Saturday 3rd December and many of our clients came to enjoy a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie whilst Lisa and her team acquainted them with their new and exciting surroundings. Managing Director, Roger Hawke said “each time we have a refurbishment and/or move, business within the branch increases significantly which is why Kingsbridge, Tavistock, Saltash, Redruth and Hayle are all putting pressure on me to be the next shop to be upgraded!” 22

NEWS

M y L ife i n T ra v el We thought you would like a little insight into a travel agents life so we asked our staff a few questions Do you remember the first booking you made? Thomson Holiday to Majorca for a family of 4 (luckily it was for a family friend, so they didn’t mind that it took me longer than it should have to do the booking!!) What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? It would be a lovely tailor-made itinerary to South Africa for a client which involved Safaris, sightseeing whale watching, and a trip on the Rovos Rail. What’s been your favourite fam trip and why was it so good? Would have to be Botswana and Victoria Falls, to see the Falls by helicopter and to see the ‘Big 5’ in their natural surroundings was truly breathtaking. Who is your favourite customer? I have so many loyal customers, that I couldn’t possibly choose. What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? Would have to be a lovely case of South African wine that a client had sent to me. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? Unfortunately too many mention! If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? I would probably choose Cristiano Ronaldo, to be that good at football and to live the dream for just 1 day would be amazing. Or I would be Sir Alex Ferguson, to be the greatest football manager of the modern era, and to be that respected in the football world would be a very special feeling.. Where would you like your career to be in 10 years time? Hopefully I will still be with Newell’s TRAVEL. As I think I am a bit old to become a professional footballer now! What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? If you have a passion for travel and like a challenge everyday this is for you. Adam Randall - Senior Travel Consultant, Truro Branch

Do you remember the first booking you made? Can’t remember the 1st booking I made, it was 31 years ago! But I still remember it was in the days before computers and to make a booking in those days you often had to ring dozens of times before you got through, usually with 2 hands and 2 phones. The worst was Yugotours (who remembers them?) on launch day! What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? I think for me the most memorable one’s are the one’s that I would choose to do if I had the money, hmmm!! For example – Trek up to Machu Picchu, Staying in a hotel overlooking an active volcano in Costa Rica, travelling on the Trans Siberian Express and walking the Milford Track in New Zealand. What’s been your favourite fam trip and why was it so good? For me, Fam trips are all about experiences that you may never do again, from elephant back riding in Sri Lanka to snorkelling with Turtles in Grand Cayman through to the highest fastest zip wire in the world at Sun City, South Africa, Hot air ballooning in the bush, to tracking elephants on foot in Zambia. However the highlight is probably flying 1st class to China and walking along the Great Wall together with the Forbidden city and Terracota army in Xian. Awesome! My motto whilst away is if you get the chance do it! Who is your favourite customer? It’s got to be a certain young lady who always makes me blush when she comes in as she’s so stunning, but I did organise her honeymoon to Ngoro Ngoro crater many years ago so I have got over it! (Hope she doesn’t read this) What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? The best gift is not expensive but is sentimental, shortly after adopting our 2 girls a client brought back 2 children’s books from Australia and one called ‘Wombat Stew’, I can still remember reading many many times over. Looking forward to reading it to my grandchildren. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? Believe it or not herding a seagull around our office like a goose trying to get it out after it had sneaked in the back door which we had ajar on one particuarly hot day. If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? Probably Alistair Cook opening for England against Australia and beating Graham Gooch’s England record of 333 (all in one day!). Wouldn’t want to waste the day by being out for a duck Where would you like your career to be in 10 years time? At 55 I think I might be thinking of winding down by then but if I had a choice I would like to retire to a cottage by the sea and spend my time writing travel articles, sounds very idyllic! What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? You are actually doing a very important job – making people’s dreams come true, not many of us can say that. Stephen Jones - Senior Travel Consultant, Helston Branch
