SkiGuide

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!!!!

S

kiing is one of those holidays that so many people say “Oh no! I don’t fancy that’’ and then once they have tried it they are hooked. Imagine the fresh mountain air and scenery that takes your breath away, coupled with cosy hotels with log fires and a glass or two of warm Gluwein what’s not to love? So if you fancy hitting the slopes or just spectating, I urge you to give it a go. The cost of a ski holiday isn’t always as it first seems, as there are a lot of extras you have to include. On top of the cost of the flight and accommodation you will need to add ski packs. Ski packs can include lessons, boot hire, helmet hire and lift pass. If you are a beginner you will need a full ski pack including everything and these are sometimes offered at a cheaper rate. Experienced skiers often have their own equipment, so may only need to purchase a lift pass. Accommodation ranges from selfcatering apartments, hotels and catered chalets where all your food and drink is included. Good travel insurance is also very important when skiing - for obvious reasons. First time skiers don’t have to be super fit before you go, although it does help if you have a certain level of fitness to make the most of the experience. I would advise going to a dry ski slope a couple of times before you travel, this means that you won’t have to waste time while in the resort learning how to put the boots on, etc and you can then head straight for the nursery slopes. A couple of lessons at the dry slope will have you snow ploughing and at least learning how to stop, always an advantage! Lessons are usually four hours a day and as a beginner this means you can progress quite quickly. You will be in a group of the same ability and will probably spend the first couple of days on your backside, laughing uncontrollably. It really is a lot of fun and when you start to master the skiing it is such an amazing feeling, you will feel so proud of yourself! Families will find childcare and ski kindergarten available in all resorts, this means if the parents are experienced skiers they can leave the children to learn to ski and go off on their own. Very young children can be taken care of in nursery-style settings and as they get older they will be doing more and more skiing. It is very frustrating how quickly children learn and end up being better than their parents who have skied for twenty years! Families wanting to learn together as well as parents who want to stay with the children in ski school are also well catered for. As your skiing improves you will move up the mountain to the more challenging slopes. This can feel daunting at 4

first, but the ski instructors are so good they are always with you and won’t push you into doing things you are not happy with. Many people who have skied for years still have ski school to improve their technique and also to learn their way around the mountains. There are many bars and restaurants all over the mountains which makes stopping for a well-earned rest easy. The restaurants at the top of the mountains or right on the slopes tend to be expensive but often worth it for the views and convenience. One of the best things about skiing is the Après Ski, skiing down to the bottom of the mountain after a tiring day and having a beer in one of the numerous bars and chatting about your adventures. Skiing is a very sociable holiday. Non-skiers can also enjoy the mountain experience. It is important to pick a resort with lots going on during the day such as walks, swimming pools, sleigh rides and shopping. Many resorts have evening activities if you have the energy; these include ice skating, night skiing, tobogganing and snow tubing. So if you want a holiday that will leave you more exhausted, excited and elated than you have ever been in your life, why not give a skiing holiday a go? You won’t be disappointed!!! TOP TIPS January and February can be extremely cold so good quality ski gear and lots of layers is important. March and April can be very sunny, so don’t forget the high factor sun block and t-shirts as layers that you can strip off. If your ski boots are really uncomfortable keep taking them back to change them until you get a pair that feels right - it can make all the difference. Take more than one pair of gloves, as they will always be wet at the end of the day. Try and get as much food included in the cost of your holiday as ski resorts can be expensive and you won’t always feel like going out to look for food. Take some lighter clothes and flip flops if you are staying in a hotel as they are so well heated and insulated you will be very hot.

or any music fan a trip to “Music City” and Gracelands is the ultimate experience, and for me this really was the best trip ever! I grew up listening to Elvis Presley and country music so when I started working in travel, I thought someday I will make it to Nashville, especially as my Nan, a great fan, never got there, so I was determined to go for her as well as myself! Never in a million years did I think that Newell’s TRAVEL and Trafalgar Holidays would give me this opportunity and I grabbed it with both hands! We flew into Nashville, for a 2 night stay and as soon as we landed, I knew I would love it and love it I did! Nashville won my heart with the amazing music resounding from the “Honky Tonks” to the Country Music Hall of Fame featuring the great Dolly Parton and Taylor Swift. We had a brief but amazing experience at RCA Studio B where we recorded an Elvis Classic and even bumped into a few Nashville TV Stars along the way. This truly was a great start to the trip and I was thoroughly excited to see what came next. 6

Carley Gower discovers the music of the American Midwest

Day 3 was our trip to Gracelands. For years I’ve seen documentaries and images of what this house looks like and I was concerned that, in reality, it might not live up to my expectations. No worries there! It beat all my wildest dreams. I took a fake bouquet of Nan’s favourite yellow roses and placed them at Elvis’s Memorial Garden and my nan Marie finally reached Gracelands. For myself, this was an emotional trip and greatly anticipated but for several of my fellow travellers, who were not fans, the whole experience actually overwhelmed them and by the time they left, they were converted. Gracelands has that something that will leave you feeling - WOW!! With nights in Natchez and Memphis we ended our tour in New Orleans – the home of Jazz and Blues, with the city vibrating to the sound of music. For me this trip was an amazing experience and I came back not only saying “I’ve been, but with people that started as strangers and ended as good friends”. Carley Gower Manager of Helston Branch 7

A Relaxing River Cruise in Portugal

I

n September I was given the opportunity to experience, first hand, how it feels to be on a Titan holiday. This started right from my front door, as Titan include VIP home transfers on all of their trips. I was headed for Portugal and the River Douro where I was to board The Spirit of Chartwell. This just happened to be the exact same vessel Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sailed on during her Diamond Jubilee pageant on the Thames. On arrival in Porto, we were met by our very knowledgeable Titan representative and transferred straight to the port to embark this unique vessel, to enjoy a welcome cocktail with the evening at leisure to settle into our cabins. The Spirit of Chartwell has a beautiful sun deck where you can enjoy the fabulous views of the River Douro, passing sleepy villages and tranquil countryside, while enjoying the

lovingly prepared meals; you never go hungry during this cruise! The following morning after our leisurely breakfast we enjoyed a city tour of Porto ending up at a local Port Wine Cellar to sample some of the famous Port, then back aboard our floating home we watched the scenery drift pass while chatting to the other guests over a pre-dinner cocktail. During our relaxed four day cruise on the River Douro we passed stunning scenery, the steep terraced vineyards that this area of Portugal is renowned for, visited many fascinating Palaces, Gardens and Museums. The on-board lecturer gave very informative talks about the River and its history. All in all a superb relaxing experience, one which I shall never forget. Thank you Titan.
