Lifetime Achievement Award
R
eaders of Newell’s News will know that Newell’s TRAVEL and owners, Roger & Helen Hawke, are old hands at collecting awards, in fact, over the years we have amassed 16 awards, in the main, due to our close working relationship we have with the country’s leading tour operators who honour us with their votes every year. But WOW, Roger & Helen certainly didn’t expect to receive the prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ presented by The Travel Network Group (TTNG) at last year’s November ‘The Power of You’ Conference held in Monaco! To say it was a surprise is an understatement. The presentation was kept totally secret and Roger & Helen, and the retail managers who attended the Conference were totally unaware of what was going on behind the scenes to make this a truly memorable occasion, one that they will never forget. The Conference is one of the largest travel events of the year attracting over 500 of the travel industry’s highest profile individuals and companies. Gary Lewis, CEO of TTNG and Lisa Henning, Group Membership Services Director presented the award to Roger & Helen during the Gala Dinner & Awards
ceremony hosted at the luxurious Fairmont Hotel. Commenting on this coveted award, Gary Lewis said “This award goes to Roger and Helen in recognition of their incredible achievements within the travel industry and in respect of their years of hard work, innovative thinking and incredible dedication to travel. Newell’s TRAVEL is an exemplary business and the team have continued to develop their success by staying true to their values of delivering outstanding customer service; leveraging new and dynamic technologies and expanding their product portfolio”. An emotional Roger responded “We are thrilled to be presented with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, it’s a real tribute for us and a great reflection of all the hard work put in by the team. To collect this award and be recognised in front of hundreds of the UK’s highest profile travel professionals is an absolute honour”. A note to Roger from his staff: Don’t go thinking you can hang up your boots just yet, there is plenty of work left for you to do!

P
ossibly the best trip I have had the privilege of going on in my 35 years in travel. It is rare to be able to travel to a country that has so recently opened it’s borders to the western world, but it should also be recognised that there is currently an internal struggle in the north of this amazing destination. Burma, or Myanmar as it is now known, is a country that offers such diversity to the traveller - temples, shrines, pagodas, beautiful countryside, prosperous towns, colourful markets and long golden beaches. On my three week trip, I sailed with Pandaw Cruises along the Chindwin River, a far less commercialised tributary of the Irrawaddy. Visiting villages, villagers homes, schools and a variety of temples and monasteries. Without our guide it would have been impossible to communicate with the villagers, as English is now only being taught in their schools - ABC, 123 and Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes became a staple of each school visit. My impression was that some of the villagers we visited (and shared tea and refreshments with Burmese style) had never seen “westerners” before. Some children were excited to see us and others would runaway and hide. My home for the week was a very colonial 10 cabin river cruise boat, the RV Kha Byoo. We had the most attentive crew that I have ever had the privilege of being looked after by. The chef produced excellent food from the tiniest of galley kitchens. You have to be fairly steady of foot for this cruise, as there is no such thing as a manmade pier or jetty to moor 4

up against. But that just added to the charm of our daily adventures. I also visited Mandalay and Yangon (Rangoon) for several days pre and post cruise. Mandalay with it’s history and colonial feel. Temples and sunsets, the beautiful Mandalay Hills and the Kandawgyi National Park and Botanical Gardens. Yangon, the modern commercial capital of Myanmar with it’s shopping malls and gardens. A must visit here is the Shwedagon Pagoda standing 344ft tall. I ended with 5 nights at Ngapali Beach in a beautiful hotel with Spa. My beach front cottage and allocated sunbed and parasol made for a wonderful relaxing end to my trip. If you can drag yourself off your sunbed, boat trips (full or half day) in your own boat for snorkelling, visiting other islands and beaches are a must. Let’s not forget a trip to the Spa where I had the best facial I have ever had. What can I say about the beach, the Indian Ocean at it’s best, but with one huge plus, there is nobody there yet, just the boat owners and the ladies selling fresh fruit, who are by no means an interruption to your day. Is the modernisation of this country going to be a good thing or bad, only time will tell. My overriding feeling when I returned was that it had been a privilege to visit such a wonderful country with people that had such a genuine smile that came from so far within that I can’t wait to go back before it is ruined by the good and bad that the “tourist dollar” brings with it. Go now before it is too late. Helen Hawke – Director

ast September I was delighted to accept an invitation from Olympic Holidays to join a group of travel agents on a familiarisation trip (FAM) to experience “Island Hopping” in Greece. I spent a few days in Skiathos then on to Skopelos before finally visiting the much smaller island of Alonissos. Each island offered something a little different. I experienced staying in all types of accommodation from 2* Bed & Breakfast to 5* Half Board. There really is an option for everyone. My week started in Skiathos, this is the most popular island of the Sporades. Set in the beautiful blue Aegean Sea this island is very green and measures approximately 12km x 4km with a stunning coastline of white sandy beaches. The main port is Skiathos Town and the harbour is lined with bars and restaurants to cater for all ages. Public transport is very easy on Skiathos as there is only one main road, where buses run constantly every 20 minutes from the port at one end of the island to Banana Beach at the other. The bus stops are numbered 0 – 26 with each stop being a beach to visit. These buses can be extremely busy in the peak season and they 6

have appeared on the Greek News when one driver squeezed 151 passengers into one coach!! Koukounaries is one of the most famous beaches, you can get a water taxi from here to Skiathos Town for just 5 Euros and it takes 15 minutes. The northern coastline is very rugged and hiring a car is popular when visiting this coastline. We then travelled by ferry over to Skopelos which took approximately 1 hour. Skopelos is the largest of the Sporades Islands, there are a few beaches, however, they are mainly shingle. Skopelos Village is the main port, full of narrow side streets with some quaint little traditional shops. Skopelos is now famous as the ‘Home of Mamma Mia’ as this is where the film was made in 2008. The locals are so proud of this and a number of them were extras in the film. I did climb the iconic 220 steps up to the little church, a tad out of breath by the time I reached the top! For our final couple of days we took the hydrofoil over to the smaller island of Alonissos. This island is very green with a coastline of many delightful coves. Picturesque Patitiri is the capital town with a great selection of shops, tavernas and bars, all very traditional, with random little squares with tables and chairs laid out to sit and watch the world go by. Alonissos is also home to one of the largest protected Marine Parks so a fantastic destination for diving. “Island Hopping” in the Sporades is a fantastic holiday option as you get to experience the great contrasts which each island has to offer. Skiing in
AUSTRIA Top Tips
A
s someone who has been skiing many times, I was delighted when the opportunity to ski in Austria arose, thanks to the invitation of Inghams and Ski Total. This is a country that I had never been to before, but now I wouldn’t hesitate to go back! Austria has something for everyone, all ages and abilities – and with its high altitude there are brilliant resorts available for even longer seasons. Sölden is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and plenty of soft snow, but what’s more, in the unlikely event of no snow, they have plenty of snow cannons to replicate this. Skiing enthusiasts can ski uninterrupted from the village of Sölden up to the glacier reaching an elevation of 3,250m. It has great runs and no surprise that the European World Cup programme traditionally starts here. To refuel after skiing we stopped at the IceQ, a spectacular gourmet restaurant where part of the James Bond ‘Spectre’ was filmed. They’re also currently building a James Bond Experience, one of four in the world – so something to keep an eye out for. The other sought after resort, Obergurgl, nestling amidst Tirol’s winter paradise, is known as the ‘Diamond of the Alps’. This stylish winter resort, at the southern end of the valley, has 24 mountain lifts and 110km of immaculate ski slopes – connecting with the neighboring hamlet of Hochgurgl. This resort is perfect for beginners and real experts alike. There are also plenty of ‘on-piste’ properties where you can ski from your door, making it perfect for those who do not want the hassle of walking too far in ski boots - believe me, that’s no easy feat! Rebecca Tuck – Assistant Manager, Kingsbridge 8
Obergurgl High altitude skiing – longer season open October to May. Many ski-in/ski-out properties and ideal for families. Recommend a glass of Gluhwein to warm up on the slopes! Sölden Offers three mountains over 3,000m high and two glaciers. Take a break from skiing and try snowshoeing, sledding, tobogganing, ice skating or even paragliding! A range of lively bars and live bands for those looking for après-ski.

hat a way to get into the Christmas spirit, I cannot recommend this trip enough and flying from Exeter was an even bigger bonus. Our flight departed early in the morning, allowing us the whole day to enjoy the activities which included:
• • • •
Husky Sledding Snowmobile Ride Search for Santa Reindeer Sleigh Ride
The first 40 passengers on the aircraft, known as the ‘red’ team, travelled to Santa’s Village – which took under 15 minutes. On arrival, we were given thermal clothing, boots and a red jacket, denoting our group. As we were the first ones to arrive, we went on a thrilling Husky ride, they were so energetic and raring to go! The search for Santa was great, especially for children – walking on a snowy path in the woods, with Christmas lights, it was so magical. Dotted around Santa’s Village were mini sheds which had fires burning to warm you up, a great idea and you do take advantage of them. In other areas, there were teepees with fires and hot berry juice, so soothing after being in the cold. This trip was so well organised, not once were we waiting around and all staff were absolutely brilliant. A lot of people think a day isn’t long enough, from my experience that isn’t the case, you can enjoy your own time as well as doing all the activities in no rush. My advice - GO! isiting Orlando, Florida is an incredible experience and an absolute must holiday for adding brilliant memories to your holiday repertoire. I felt very lucky and extremely excited to have been offered the fantastic opportunity last October, to visit Orlando with Funway Holidays on their familiarisation (FAM) trip – and my generous itinerary was definitely great FUN! I travelled with a small group of wonderful travel agents direct from London Gatwick with Virgin Atlantic. The flight was very smooth, provided excellent service and plenty of entertainment. I, of course, fed my enthusiasm by watching the latest Disney films and in no time at all we had arrived to start this amazing adventure. For me, it wouldn’t be a visit to Orlando without exploring the parks so I was ecstatic when I saw our itinerary included the main ones! We started with Disney and visited the impressive Animal Kingdom - where we went on a jeep safari and spotted lots of lovely animals, the enchanting Magic Kingdom – (my favourite) where we saw the magnificent castle, parade and all of the enthusiastic Disney characters, and the insightful Epcot – where we saw the food and wine festival being held as part of the parks celebration of different cultures. These were my main highlights from the Disney 12

parks but there are tremendous amounts to do at each of them! I also had the pleasure of visiting Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure which is out of this world! There are unlimited thrills at these incredible parks and as a Harry Potter fan, my priority was to explore this remarkable place which surpassed all my expectations. We visited the amazing ‘Diagon Alley’ and went on a magical journey on the Hogwarts Express taking us to ‘Hogsmead’ in Islands of Adventure. We did all the creative Harry Potter rides and other thrilling coasters including ‘the Hulk’ (another favourite). Another must theme park is the brand new Volcano Bay, a water park where you can choose to explore or relax with no queuing so everyone is happy! No visit to the USA would be complete without enjoying an American Basketball game and Funway Holidays did not disappoint. We were treated to watch Orlando Magic triumph over Miami Heat. This is something I have always wanted to do and I experienced it most spectacularly, seated in VIP seats in the vibrant, enormous and wonderfully atmospheric arena which included unlimited use of the fantastic VIP lounge. I am so grateful to have this indescribable memory, a highlight I thoroughly recommend! Whether you’re a thrill seeker, a shopper wanting to discover designer stores in the fabulous premium outlets or if you would simply prefer to relax and soak up the Orange County sun - there is something for everyone in Orlando! Fabulous

was privileged to be invited by Travel2 to join a group of travel agents on a familiarisation (FAM) trip to Australia! This trip was so action packed that I could write a book, let alone a feature but I’ll try and give you a glimpse of a truly memorable experience. My journey started in Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland and, courtesy of the Brisbane Greeters we were given a whistle stop tour of the city. After our overnight in Brisbane we headed to Noosa, a quiet place away from the city, which boasts fantastic beaches and nature trails into the National Park. Here, I learnt how to paddle-board, well, to be truthful I fell in more times than I care to remember and had the bruises to prove it! Leaving the tranquillity of Noosa we headed to Fraser Island for a full tour taking in Lake Mackenzie, a rainforest walk and we visited SS Maheno, a famous passenger liner which was washed ashore by a cyclone in 1935 where her disintegrating shell has become a popular tourist attraction. Fraser Island is 98% sand and is home to a variety of species 14
of lizards, snakes and spiders but more famous for the wild dogs of Australia, the Dingo. Fraser Island is also perfect for whale watching and the sunsets are a sight to behold. A must do on your itinerary. From Cairns we visited Port Douglas, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. This is another must do trip and my advice is to book the VIP package which takes in a wide range of activities such as a helicopter ride over the reef, snorkelling, scuba diving, a submarine experience, to name but a few. The highlight for me out of the entire trip was visiting Palm Cove. Nestled between Port Douglas and Cairns this is a hidden gem, very small and quaint with wonderful beaches and the most amazing sunsets and sunrises - the perfect place to relax and unwind. If you’re lucky as the sun rises you can catch sight of pods of dolphins swimming across the bay – magical! Our last few days were based around Cairns and Palm Cove where we searched for crocodiles on Mossman River – they are huge! A fascinating trip took us to Kuranda Village, an Aboriginal village high in the rainforest accessed by Skyrail and we returned on the Scenic Railway. Thanks to Travel2 I enjoyed the trip of a lifetime. Carley Gower – Manager, Helston

ast October I was delighted to be invited, by Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV), to join a group of 20 lucky travel agents on a familiarisation trip (FAM) on board Magellan – destination the Norwegian Fjords! CMV offer traditional British cruises from several ports all over the UK. Bristol is our nearest port but my cruise departed from Tilbury. Getting there was easy as CMV offer connecting coaches from major cities so I only had to make my way to London Victoria coach station where I was met by their staff and transferred to the port. The Magellan is a beautiful midsize ship that can take 1,250 passengers. Her facilities are fantastic with two restaurants and an informal bistro, two swimming pools, wellness and beauty centre, gym, casino and now a brand new coffee shop. Evening entertainment is held in the Show Lounge where there is plenty of seating for pre/post dinner drinks. With ‘big show’ productions, guest acts, cabarets and classical interludes, there is something for everyone. During days at sea, there are lots of activities to choose from such as a work-out in the gym, a make-over in the beauty salon, a swim in the pool, table tennis competitions, bingo, quizzes and films or something a little less energetic in the form of curling up with a good book! I spent one afternoon learning how to make (and drink!) cocktails and another making towel animals which impressed my family on my return. Food is always an important part of my holiday and I was definitely impressed with the delicious menus we were served. Both lunch and dinner were 5/6 courses and the choice was amazing. Vegetarian and gluten free diets were also well catered for. Drinks were a bargain too only £4 per cocktail. Drink packages can be purchased on board for only £17 per day which has to be the cheapest I have found on any other cruise ship. 16
My itinerary took me to the stunning Norwegian Fjords. What a wonderful place to visit. We sailed to Ulvik and joined an excursion booked with CMV to the Voringfoss Waterfall, the third tallest waterfall in Norway and absolutely breathtaking. CMV offer several excursions at great value, and you have the comfort and knowledge that they will return you safely to the ship in good time before you set sail to the next fantastic port of call. The following day we woke up in Flåm and boarded the Flåm Railway which runs through one of the wildest and most magnificent landscapes in Norway climbing to a height of 2,840 feet. The train ride has been named the best train journey in the world! Ålesund was our beautiful next port of call with its unique concentration of early 20th century Jugend-style buildings then onwards to our final destination, Bergen, a great city to buy your gifts and souvenirs before heading home. An amazing week, on a fabulous ship, to a wonderful destination! Lisa Hawken – Manager, Bodmin

A focu s o n Cambo d D
iscover the incredible majesty of Vietnam and Cambodia, on this majestic tour that takes you round some of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring sights of these ancient countries. Begin in Hanoi, a vibrant city filled with bustling streets that are easily explored on a tuk-tuk ride. From here, venture to Halong Bay. It is easy to understand why there are so many myths and legends surrounding this captivating UNESCO listed World Heritage site. From the calm azure of the waters, to the craggy rocks that rise steeply and dramatically from them, enjoy a relaxing and scenic cruise, enjoying your dinner on board a luxury junk as you watch the world go by. Hue is next, famed for the magnificent Thien Mu Pagoda and the ‘Perfume River’. Hue is filled with majestic examples of Vietnamese architecture, and is truly a delight to explore. The train journey to Hoi An is an undoubtedly mesmerising experience, as you wind through the Vietnamese countryside. Enjoy a look into the traditional ways of life of the Vietnamese, as you wind your way through thick, verdant landscapes and along delightful coastal stretches. Another city that is filled with the heady rhythm of lively street vendors, Hoi An is another incredible place to explore, especially viewing the Japanese covered bridge and the local market. Following Hoi An is Nha Trang, the journey to which is a valuable insight of Vietnamese farming. The beaches of Nha Trang are pristine, and the bays are breathtaking, and here you take a break from the whirlwind and just relax, ahead of your visit to the capital city, Ho Chi Minh City. Here is an insight into the previous life of Vietnam as a French Colony, with numerous examples of French architecture. You also discover the struggle of Vietnam during the Vietnam War, in an insightful visit to the claustrophobic Cu Chi Tunnels. Your journey into Cambodia is done along the Mekong Delta, a wonder of nature on which you can see a myriad of flora and fauna. Travel through Cai Rang on your way to the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, and discover the opulent temples in a contrast with the Tuol Sleng – a museum dedicated to the history of the Khmer Rouge regime. End your tour with a visit to the iconic Angor Wat and Angkor Thom temples from a base in Siem Rep. Once elegant, gilded displays of worship, the temples have been reclaimed by nature to a startlingly dramatic effect, and here you get the sense of eerie calm amongst one of the most iconic sights of Cambodia. 18

Germany By TRAIN
e have been fortunate enough to enjoy many independent train holidays superbly organised by the lovely ladies in Newell’s TRAVEL, Newquay and last year’s holiday was no exception. Our itinerary took us to some of the most picturesque areas of Germany. Our adventure began in the beautiful city of Freiburg on the edge of the Black Forest. The centrally situated Park Hotel was very comfortable. The highlights of Freiburg included an organ recital in the impressive Münster, a visit to the theatre and an excursion to stunning Lake Titisee where we enjoyed a boat trip on the crystal clear lake. Whilst in Freiburg, do not miss visiting the oldest cemetery which is most atmospheric! After an interesting train journey, we arrived in the Harz Mountains. Again, we had a central hotel in Goslar, the Niedersächsischer Hof. Fascinating squares and ancient churches were dotted throughout the city. Our highlight excursion was by steam train to the Brocken – unforgettable views.
Our final destination was Hameln where we stayed in the Christinenhof. On one occasion we inadvertently joined a private group on a river tour and we were made most welcome. Hameln is a quaint city and the story of the Pied Piper is an integral part of city life. We saw an open air show performed by local people. Do not miss the Pied Piper Museum which has a lovely surprise at the end! Beautiful scenery, excellent food, charming people and a very efficient rail service, including the Eurostar, all of which made for a memorable holiday - Wunderbar! Introducing C
ruising is the fastest growing sector in the travel industry and recognising this we are delighted to announce that we have launched a dedicated cruising division headed up by Nick Pritchard who joined us on 1st December as our Cruising Manager. Nick has over 44 years’ experience in the cruise industry and personal knowledge of many cruise lines and their ships. In conjunction with Nick’s arrival, we launched the Ocean & River Cruise Club (OARCC) at our recent Cruise Show. Nick will be responsible for developing OARCC with the assistance of recently appointed Cruise Ambassadors in each of our 11 retail offices.
So what is the purpose of OARCC?
Cruising is more than just a cruise. There are so many more elements to making a cruise a fabulous holiday. It encompasses: Individually crafted holidays • Pre & post hotels • City tours • Transfers • Excursions • Fly-cruises from your local airport • No fly cruise from UK ports Cruising is the ultimate in holiday adventure and can be all things to all people – from small and niche ships up to cruise ships which are literally floating holiday resorts, not forgetting the specially designed river ships which sail down some of the World’s most beautiful rivers. We know that a cruise by itself makes for a fantastic holiday. But what if we add a hotel city break prior to joining your ship? What if your cruise ends at Barcelona but you want to spend a few days exploring this wonderful city? What if you have been on a cruise full of excursions and excitement and you just want a few days, or more, relaxing on a beautiful beach? Let us get the best deal and design the right holiday for you.
To learn more, visit our website www.oceanandrivercruiseclub.co.uk, register today with OARCC and receive regular e-shots full of offers, ideas and wonderful opportunities or contact your local branch of Newell’s TRAVEL or just give Nick a call on 033 33 44 22 48 or email nick.pritchard@oarcc.co.uk 22

ollowing the huge success of our inaugural Cruise Show, we held our second Show on 8th October 2017 again at the superb Atlantic Hotel, Newquay. With the majority of the world’s leading cruise companies once again in attendance our visitors received one to one advice on all things cruising. The day was packed with seminar and cinema presentations, on the day Show offers and the chance to enter the Star Prize Draw. The lucky winner was Mr Colin Grant who served in the British Army in the Royal Signals. Whilst on operational tour in Northern Ireland he sustained lasting injuries to his spine, legs and joints. Since being discharged Colin has counselled ex-serviceman for some considerable time before becoming unwell himself. Despite his deteriorating health he “soldiers” on and is now involved with Help for Heroes. We are delighted that such a deserving couple have won this amazing opportunity to cruise on board Independence of the Seas, kindly donated by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, our main sponsors of last year’s Cruise Show. The Cruise Show has proved so popular that we have already booked the Atlantic Hotel for our third event on Sunday 14th October 2018 – another date for your diary!

s regular readers of Newell’s News you will know that we started a programme of refurbishment in 2014 when our Truro branch became a partnership store of Kuoni Holidays and received a complete refurbishment as part of the new relationship. Following numerous complimentary and flattering comments regarding our new colour scheme and office appearance, the pressure was on to refurbish all of our 11 retail branches. So one down 10 to go! So far we are on course for a full house! By the end of 2016, Helston, Falmouth, Liskeard, Newquay and Bodmin have all joined Truro in our new branding. In June 2017, our Kingsbridge office enjoyed the same treatment and Tavistock were close behind receiving their make-over in November. Newell’s TRAVEL has had a high street presence in Kingsbridge for 11 years and the girls, Rebecca and Charlotte ably led by Jo, their manager, are proud to serve the residents of Kingsbridge and South Hams. They opened
their doors to the public on 2nd June to great reviews and everyone who called in were impressed with the new look! Then, in November, it was the turn of our Tavistock office. Coincidentally, just 10 years ago in May 2007, Newell’s TRAVEL opened for the very first time in Tavistock. This year Tavistock’s Dickensian Evening fell on 1st December and Sharon, our manager, Carol, Kerry and Zoe invited their clients to join them in a glass of bubbly and admire their new “home” before heading off for late night Christmas shopping and the turning on of the town’s lights. Roger said “Every time an office is completed, I am accosted by every manager whose office has not yet received a makeover to be the next on the list. Only Saltash, Redruth and Hayle remain, who will be next?!” Above left: Kingsbridge Left: Tavistock
