NEWS

For those of you who attended our 30th anniversary Travel Show, thank you, and despite the snow – yes, SNOW in March – it was an amazing success. Now to matters in hand, Issue 9 of Newell’s News is full of interesting features, including many reports from staff that have experienced a familiarisation (FAM) trip courtesy of our splendid tour operators. My staff receive weekly training sessions to keep them abreast of the ever changing travel industry so that they can provide you with up-to-date information relating to destinations around the world. FAM trips are part of this educational process because there is nothing as good as first-hand experience of a destination. Departing from a local airport or holidaying close to home is very popular for many people, especially for families so page 3 is dedicated to local departures from Newquay and Exeter, pages 10 &11 family breaks in Cornwall, pages 14 & 15 looks at the beautiful island of Jersey and our exclusive London weekend on page 23. As usual we have our normal “gossip” column on page 23. I hope you find this issue interesting, informative and a jolly good read.

Vancouver Canada C

ourtesy of the Canadian Tourist Office, I was lucky enough to join a party of travel agents on a familiarisation trip (FAM) to the Vancouver area of Canada. Before my visit, I thought Vancouver would be somewhere you would spend a few days as part of a tour or pre-cruise, however, now I would certainly recommend it as a holiday in itself because there is so much to see and do. A good idea is to buy a hop-on-hop-off tram ticket as it will take you to most of the tourist sites. The City itself has many different areas - my two favourites being Gastown, which is the oldest area and has lovely traditional buildings and Granville Island which has been created from old warehouses. There are now numerous stores selling local and homemade goods and best of all it features the Vancouver Foodie Tour. There is a choice of four and I went on the Market Tour. You have a culinary expert who takes you to various stalls and stores trying produce including Artisan bread and bagels, charcuterie, cheeses, speciality teas, chocolate and, of course, varieties of Maple syrup and doughnuts. Another of Vancouver’s main attractions is Stanley Park. Here you can hire a bicycle, ride on a horse drawn carriage and visit a fantastic aquarium. In the summer locals use it as their beach resort and there are many walking paths and interesting features such as a lighthouse and totem poles. Two of Vancouver’s most popular tourist attractions are Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge. You can 4

Newell’s T R AV E L

NEWS

explore the temperate rainforest with or without a guide. On Grouse Mountain you can take the Skyride up the mountain. Vancouver is a great base for exploring other areas. In two hours you can be in Whistler with amazing scenery of lakes and mountains and amazing skiing during the winter months. You might prefer a cultural excursion and visit one of the First Nation sites and learn about Canada’s origins. It is also possible to visit Vancouver Island on a day trip, although I would recommend a stay here too, if possible. Victoria has many impressive buildings and a walking history tour is very interesting. Butchart Gardens is another impressive attraction and amazing to think it was built on the site of an old quarry. Finally, I visited Vancouver Lookout at Harbour Centre, with its spectacular 360° view of Metro Vancouver, the majestic North Shore Mountains and Vancouver Island just off the Pacific coast. The experience starts as you climb the outside of the building in an exterior glass elevator where, in 40 seconds, you are whisked from street level to the observation deck. Upon arrival, 167m above sea level, you are looking down on one of the most beautiful cities in the world. As an overview, Vancouver is an amazing place to holiday or as a stopover. If departing on a cruise from here you can be picked or dropped off at the airport with your luggage and taken on one of the organised tours which I think is a great idea. Vancouver, I will see you again! Kerry Brown - Travel Consultant, Tavistock

ave you ever considered a city break to Malaga? I hadn’t until I was given the opportunity, courtesy of Kirker Holidays. On arrival, we made our way to our hotel, the Gran Hotel Miramar - an absolutely beautiful 5 star hotel in the perfect location, set on the seafront with some amazing views. The hotel was once used as a field hospital during the Spanish Civil War and, until 1987, the headquarters of Malaga’s law courts. Malaga is home to some extraordinary sites and museums, one in particular that stood out was the Picasso Museum. 200 pieces of Picasso’s art is exhibited covering 80 years of his work from 1892 to 1972. On our trip, we took a lovely walk along the seafront and around the historical centre where you will find the vibrant shopping area, local restaurants, bars and various types of entertainment. We then made our way to Madrid, travelling on the high speed AVE train from Malaga – this took 2 hours 30 minutes. The train station in both Malaga and Madrid are very easy and well sign posted. Our hotel for the next 2 nights was the NH Palacio de Tepa, a lovely 5 star hotel, set in the centre with some of the best bars and restaurants on the doorstep, along with a 5-10 minute walk to Mercado de San Miguel, one of the most amazing markets I have ever seen! Here, they sold fresh fish, cheese, meats, chocolate, wine, beer, cocktails, you name it they sold it! There were stalls with freshly made calamari, anchovies, paella, huge stuffed olives and vegetarian options also – a great place to visit and grab some lunch, the atmosphere was just phenomenal. There is another market, a lot like San Miguel, called Mercado San Anton. This market was much quieter and a lot cheaper, San Anton is where the locals go to 6

get their meats, seafood, cheeses, etc. We went on a fantastic and very interesting walking tour of the historic quarter of Madrid, strolling through the narrow, cobbled streets and visiting the remarkable cathedrals. On our last night, we went for a yummy meal at the Corral de la Morería and watched flamenco dancing, what an experience! I highly recommend watching flamenco dancing when visiting Spain, it was so powerful, emotional and incredibly entertaining – such a treat and a great way to end our fabulous trip. Malaga and Madrid has something for everyone, plenty of history and culture, beaches (Malaga) and beauty. A perfect destination organised by Kirker Holidays, specialists for the discerning traveller. Symphony of the Seas N

atalie Hurst and I were delighted beyond belief to receive an invitation from Royal Caribbean Cruises to join a privileged group of travel agents to the launch of Symphony of the Seas from Barcelona and enjoy a 2 day taster. When the largest cruise ship ever built came in to view, the whole coach let out a collective ‘WOW’ she was immense. Walking on board felt like stepping into a shopping centre. There are 7 neighbourhoods to accommodate the 6,600 passengers, including a leafy Central Park, the perfect place to stop for a cooling drink and watch the world go by, a Boardwalk entertainment area with sports, gaming machines, a full sized Carousel and hot dog stand. Fitness and relaxation are also catered for in the Vitality Spa and Fitness Centre. This 18 deck masterpiece has 7 complimentary restaurants, as well as 12 speciality dining restaurants such as Japanese and Jamie Oliver’s Italian, which carry a supplement. There is a full sized ice rink which hosts shows as well as ice skating lessons, a diving Aquatheatre which comes alive at night with a brilliant show by the Aquanation Acrobats, high divers and synchronised swimmers. There is also a full sized theatre which puts on full Broadway productions and, at the time of our visit, we saw “Hairspray”, what a toe tapping 90 minutes of fun! The thrill seekers amongst you will love the 10 storey Ultimate Abyss Slide – I had a bit of a wobble when it was my turn but I took the plunge and I’m glad I did! There are also 3 water slides, 4 pools and 11 hot tubs, some in the adults’ only solarium area, as well as the surf simulating FlowRider. Kids are well looked after too, with the amazing kids club and dedicated kids splash zone. Our cabin was a Balcony cabin, with ample space for 4 8

people – the sofa bed converted to a double bed, if needed, perfect for families. However we didn’t spend more than 30 minutes in our cabin apart from to sleep! There is so much going on all over the ship. From pub quizzes to wine tastings, to live music on the Royal Promenade, you will never be bored! The ship has some really great innovations, such as the first Laser Tag at Sea, the first Escape Room at Sea, and the Bionic Bar, where you tap in your order on a tablet and the robotic arms mix and serve your drink for you. It was such a privilege to be able to experience this amazing ship. Normally you go on cruises to see different destinations, but Royal Caribbean have changed the game – Symphony of the Seas IS the destination. Debi Phillips – Senior Travel Consultant, Liskeard

Staycation Breaks

I

love a short break, any excuse, anytime, birthday or bank holiday!! I love caravans or lodges and if there’s a hot tub it’s a bonus! Don’t get me wrong, I love my exotic overseas holidays too but, just for a battery recharge and a family or friends get together, nothing beats a local holiday park. I love (think I’ve already said that!!) travelling within an hour’s drive, we’re lucky enough to live in Cornwall (Gods county my boss and partner both say). Hoseasons offer different parks and locations to suit all tastes and budgets, some with an array of family favourite facilities and others with fishing lakes or country walks to suit a quieter breakaway. Here are some sites I love!! Piran Meadows close to Newquay but set in the countryside Great restaurant and bar (no fruit machines just pool tables and a small bowling alley), spongy bottom swimming pool, adults only spa, “Go Active” programme for older children with rock climbing and football areas, water jet area for young children and a play park and all on a smartly laid out site with caravans/lodges for all budgets, I love it here. I’ve been with family, with friends in the winter, at Christmas (enjoyed a top of the range lodge with hot tub slept 8 in 4 bedrooms - didn’t want to leave!) and for a 50th Birthday Girlie break. My son loves doing the archery here, great instructors, knowledgeable and fun. You even get a glass of bubbly on arrival what’s not to love! Sandymouth near Bude I’ve been here several times and always loved it but in 2017 it had a major refurbishment so can’t wait to return. It’s under the same management as Piran Meadows so promises some superb changes. Sandymouth has beautiful views from the site sweeping down to the north Cornish Coast and situated in the countryside about 3 miles from Bude. Excellent outdoor Pirate Boat/park for children. It’s a modern complex with restaurant/bar and 10

indoor swimming pool. Another “upmarket” feeling site, all caravans are spaced out well with neat gardens and parking areas. Mullion Holiday Park near Mullion on the beautiful Lizard. This park is great for family fun holidays. Indoor and outdoor swimming pools, huge entertainment room with lots going on every night with bingo, live acts and children’s favourite characters and games. There’s a big arcade and a family restaurant. Good shop with bike hire. Caravans and chalets to suit everyone, fun all the way! Also love.... Hengar Manor near Bodmin. This site provides lodges, apartments and caravans - some with hot tubs. Great walks, fishing and huge indoor pool keeps everyone entertained. Ducks on the terrace every morning!! Gwel an Mor looking over North Coast at Portreath. This is a luxury lodge only site with smart indoor pool and terrace restaurant. Hendra Holiday Park near Newquay. This park offers amazing facilities for families; huge indoor and outdoor swimming pools with slides, Segway hire, skate park, play park, massive entertainment complex with bar, restaurant, arcade and programme of activities. To top it all, only minutes from the stunning local beaches. Looking forward to my next Hoseasons.... Kay Willis – Manager, Hayle

Islands H

aving never visited any of the Caribbean islands before, I was delighted to join a Funways Holiday FAM trip with a group of lucky travel consultants to Grand Cayman. My first impression on arrival was that we were all definitely in for a great visit just from the welcome we received at the airport. The main tourist area is Seven Mile Beach which, as expected, has a beautiful long stretch of sandy beach which is brilliant for all sorts of water sports such as windsurfing, jet-skiing, scuba diving and paddle boarding in fantastically warm and crystal clear waters. Set behind the beach are plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants ranging from fast food outlets to gourmet cuisine, so plenty of choice. Set behind the main beach road is a new shopping and restaurant 12

development called Camana Bay which is a great place to do a little retail therapy and alfresco dining. Just a short drive or taxi ride from Seven Mile Beach is George Town the island’s capital, which is a designer shoppers’ paradise. Downtown George Town is where you will find most of the high end jewellery shops as well as a few interesting and unique stores ideal for souvenir hunting. We were lucky enough to be treated to some of the activities on offer in the Cayman Islands and I can’t honestly say which was my favourite! The helicopter ride around the island was so exhilarating especially as I had never been in a helicopter before and to see the island from above was fantastic, it gave a real perspective of Seven Mile Beach and the lagoon. The submarine trip from George Town provided some amazing views of the marine life in the area and watching turtles glide by at 100 feet under water was really tranquil. One of the main attractions was Stingray City where we interacted with these amazing creatures, another first for me! We also managed to visit the famous Crystal Caves where,

Newell’s T R AV E L

NEWS

Top Tips * legend has it, Blackbeard the Pirate stashed his ill-gotten gains which are yet to be found. Apparently, there are still an estimated 100 caves to be uncovered. I did keep a look out for gold doubloons without success! Grand Cayman is also home to the Queen Elizabeth Botanical Gardens which is well worth a visit especially if you enjoy horticulture. Pedro St James is the historic old seat of government of the island, which is a fascinating place to visit to learn of the island’s colonial past. Finally, at the end of the day there is no better place to relax than Rum Point and enjoy a barbeque whilst watching the sun set over the Caribbean Sea. I’m really grateful to Funway Holidays for showing me what a great destination Grand Cayman is, for couples and families alike, and I fully intend to return one day with my own family. Dave Rowley – Travel Consultant, Falmouth

Make sure you experience Stingray City – an amazing experience and chance to interact with the amazing sealife around the island.

* Use the Catamaran Cruise to Rum Point and enjoy the fantastic sunset whilst enjoying an amazing Barbeque. • Tax free shopping – get your designer brands at lower prices than at home. • Tipping – 15% is always added to the bill automatically, similar to the USA. • When booking your hotel keep with bed and breakfast as there are so many fantastic restaurants to try.

Interesting Facts

1. The Cayman Islands have a total population of approximately 55,000, only about half of these are of Caymanian descent. 2. The national flower is the Banana Orchid which is a unique species to the 3 islands. 3. The islands were sighted by Christopher Columbus who named them “Las Tortugas” after seeing huge amounts of sea turtles and the mythical Tortuga featured in the Pirates of the Carbbean films is based on the Cayman Islands. 4. The Cayman Islands were the birthplace of Scuba diving which was introduced in 1957. 5. Grand Cayman plans to have 365 dive sites, one for every day of the year, they already have sites for all skill levels. 6. The famous Seven Mile beach is actually only 5.5 miles long, the average winter water temperature here is 27ºC. 7. One of the most celebrated events on the island is Pirates week which this year is from 8th to 12th November, they have fishing tournaments and a mock pirate invasion from the sea! 8. Seafood is the main cuisine on the islands which is understandable with the proximity of the sea, the islands have also embraced the cooking process of Jerking. 9. If you rent a car they drive on the same side of the road as us which makes exploring the islands a little less complicated. 10. The total size of the three islands is 100 square miles.

I

was so excited to be invited by Premier Holidays to join a group of travel agents on their FAM trip to Jersey in April. I was lucky enough to fly from Exeter Airport which is just a 90 minute flight, with a touchdown in Guernsey. On arrival, our first taste of this wonderful island was a visit to St Brelade’s Bay where we walked along the stunning coastline with super views of the bay to Fisherman’s Chapel, built of local granite dating back to Norman times. This is where the fishermen used to gather and pray before setting out to sea. St Brelade’s Bay is a large crescent shape with gently sloping southern facing sands and where the Golden Sands Hotel and the L’ Horizon Beach Hotel are situated. Both hotels have fantastic views of the sea in a tranquil setting and the bay is celebrated for its clean bathing and water sports. The capital of Jersey, St Helier, has the famous Pomme d’Or hotel, overlooking the harbour which provided a prime site for the German Naval Headquarters during WW2. It overlooks Liberation Square where crowds of islanders gathered to welcome the British Fleet that came to liberate the island. A trip to the Jersey War Tunnels tells a compelling story of 14

islanders under occupation during WW2. It is definitely worth a visit to experience the life of an islander during this time. Everyone is given an ID card and at the end of the tour you can find out what happened to that person. Jersey is definitely a foodie paradise. A vast choice of fabulously fresh sea food caught around the shores is a delicacy and that’s not the only local produce. Jersey produces its own fruit, vegetables, beef, pork and even cheeses. The local milk from Jersey cows is really creamy and not forgetting the Jersey Royal potatoes. These used to be called Jersey Flukes until Queen Victoria visited the island and enjoyed them so much they were re-named Jersey Royals in her honour. A great place to enjoy the sea food is the Crab Shack at St Brelade’s Bay. The shellfish are cooked to perfection and the service is great. Another interesting day out is Jersey Zoo which had its name changed to the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Gerald Durrell spent a lifetime committed to saving rare species from extinction and died in 1995 but his work at the Trust is continued by his widow. Premier Holidays gave me the opportunity to explore this fantastic island which has something for everyone and I shall certainly be returning to enjoy more of what this beautiful island has to offer. Rachel Higgs – Manager, Liskeard

Interesting Facts: • The largest of the Channel Islands, but still only 14km long by 8km wide. • The best months to visit are May to September. • Jersey prints its own money and still has a £1 note. • Jersey issues its own stamps. • Tennerfest Food Festival – enjoy six weeks of great meals at fixed prices from 1st October to 11th November 2018. • Battle of Flowers - Jersey’s annual August carnival, brings together a spectacle of hand flowered floats, entertainment and an array of costumes that creates a superb carnival atmosphere over 2 days – 9th & 10th August 2018.

o add to our burgeoning trophy cabinet, we have been honoured with yet another Award! At The Travel Network Group’s (TTNG) cruise conference held in Birmingham on Sunday 20th May at The Forest of Arden Hotel, 7 of our Cruise Ambassadors, together with Nick Pritchard, our Cruising Manager, were delighted to receive the “Cruise Club Member of the Year” award. From the photograph you can see how proud and excited Nick and the team were to accept the award from Gary Lewis, the Chief Executive Officer of TTNG. We have made great inroads in developing our knowledge on all things cruising to provide our customers with professional and up-to-date advice. We now have a Cruise Ambassador in each of our 11 offices who are all working towards completing the Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) level 3 training programme which will result in them achieving CLIA’s Master Status accreditation. This fact has been recognised and applauded by TTNG and we are grateful for their support and confidence in our ability to develop our cruising knowledge.
