Travel Brit and AAA Awards – 2017 What a month July has been for Newell’s TRAVEL. At the beginning of the month we not only scooped two “gongs” at the 11th annual Travel Brit Awards where more than 230 travel agents and tour operators celebrated at Warner Leisure Hotels’ Cricket St Thomas property in Somerset, but on 11th July we attended the prestigious AAA Awards at London’s Park Plaza Hotel and were honoured yet again with the South West England & South Wales – Travel Agency of the Year Award. The Travel Brit Awards reward and recognise excellence in selling domestic holidays and husband and wife owners, Roger & Helen Hawke, won the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’, while the Newmarket Holidays ‘Outstanding Agent Award’ went to Newell’s TRAVEL, Truro. Roger said: “We are delighted that our Truro office has been named Newmarket’s champion store of the year for 2017. Newmarket offers us fantastic support and we enjoy selling their product. On a personal level, Helen & I are humbled to have been presented with the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’. We accept it on behalf of all of our staff who make our business
the success that it is today”. Newell’s TRAVEL has been acknowledged at the celebrated AAA Awards on many occasions and Roger said: “It is always an honour to be recognised by the nation’s leading tour operators at the most prestigious awards ceremony in the travel industry. Our success is down to hard work, excellent professional staff and innovative thinking and our close working relationship with the country’s leading tour operators.

Vietnam
I
had the opportunity, to visit this exotic and compelling country which boasts breathtaking natural beauty and a unique heritage. My journey started in Hanoi on the banks of the Red River, the busy capital of Vietnam, known for its centuries-old architecture and rich culture. Places of interest include Ho Chi Minh’s house, the 12th century One Pillar Pagoda or watch one of the many traditional water puppet theatres. 3½ hours drive east is Halong Bay - comprising over 2,000 stunning islets. Our group enjoyed a sunny day but this isn’t the norm, it can often be covered in cloud or mists which makes it all the more mysterious and beautiful. We also visited one of the small limestone islands and climbed to the top for the best picture opportunity of the trip. The steps are quite steep and you need rest breaks but well worth the effort, from this elevation you truly appreciate the unique scenery. An hour’s drive south is the trading port of Hoi An, where 4
the houses are all finished in Mediterranean yellow stucco with silk lanterns hanging from every possible nook and cranny. The main parts of the streets are closed to traffic from 5pm so you can saunter around and enjoy the amazing sights and street food. Hoi An is famous for bespoke tailoring and Mr Yalys will make a suit for £70 in about 24 hours!!! That applies to ladies clothes too. A good excursion from Hoi An is a day’s fishing with the local fishermen on the Coconut Palm Canal. Boarding coracles we joined the small fishermen’s boats, where we tried our hand at casting the nets – easier said than done. Again from Hoi An, you can join the famous Red Bridge cooking class and enjoy a day of visiting the markets culminating in an English speaking cookery class and 3 course dinner. I took the opportunity of visiting Mỹ Son, a cluster of abandoned and partially ruined Hindu temples dating back to the 4th and 14th century AD, quite fascinating and well worth a visit. We then travelled to Hue on the Perfume River, one of the most significant cultural and historic centres in Vietnam. A major attraction is its vast, 19th-century Citadel, surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls. It encompasses the Imperial

Top Tips
• Visit all year round but November – April is the busiest time. • The Monsoon season is from May – November with hot and humid afternoon showers. • •
December – February can be cool in the north.
Halong Bay is a must visit although it can be drizzly & foggy during February-April.
• Tropical storms are frequent during the summer months. City, with palaces and shrines; the Forbidden Purple City, once the emperor’s home; and a replica of the Royal Theatre. Flying south to Saigon we visited the Chu Chi tunnels, these tunnels allowed the Vietcong to move underground undetected by the Americans. If you are claustrophobic then the tour is still really interesting and you don’t have to go down into the tunnels.
Next stop the Mekong Delta, in the far south. We sailed on the Mekong Eye’s Junk and visited the floating markets whilst sailing through differing landscapes, from industrial to tropical palms. Vietnam is a beautiful diverse country full of surprises. Jackie Wall – Travel Consultant, Bodmin
• Central Vietnam is usually dry February May and wet from August - January. • The currency is the Dong. • Most places will take US dollars but not the larger shopping malls. • Combine Cambodia and Vietnam to make a holiday of a lifetime.

Slovenia H
ow pleased I am that I said “YES” when I was invited to go to Slovenia courtesy of Inghams, it is one of the most beautiful, picturesque and peaceful countries I have ever been to and I cannot believe it never entered my mind to visit before. Kranjska Gora is at the centre of the upper Sava Alpine Valley, it is the world famous host of Alpine Skiing World Cups and ski jumping on the Planica giant run. It is such a quaint town, very family orientated and has a young vibe, the skiing here is for beginners. There are lots of activities available such as cycling, hiking, water sports and winter sports. We walked to Lake Jasna to see spectacular crystal clear lakes nestled within the Julian Alps – a fantastic area for families. Half an hour away from Kranjska Gora is the Triglav National Park, the only National Park in Slovenia, again a walkers’ paradise! For just 10 Euros we visited Lake Bled Castle, dramatically perched above Lake Bled, and aside from the predictably fantastic views, the castle also has a number of attractions. I was, however, pretty content just looking out at the amazing views over Lake Bled and the charming Lake Bled Island - it 6

is truly like a scene from a fairy tale. The gem in Lake Bled is the Island and to get there we took the traditional Pletna boat. A lasting memory will definitely be swimming in the crystal waters, what an incredibly refreshing experience. Bled is quite a large resort with a shopping centre, lots of bars and restaurants. There are plenty of activities ranging from walking, swimming, hiring bikes, the tourist train, tobogganing and zip lining – a very lively place to enjoy. In contrast, Lake Bohinj is a very quiet and noncommercialised resort, it is the largest natural lake in Slovenia with endless opportunities for outdoor activities and is perfect for all types of water activities all year round – even ice skating in winter if you are lucky. My Family Cruise T
his summer we decided to have a family holiday with the kids, grandparents and my sister and her family. Our ages ranged from 9 to 71 and the task of finding the perfect holiday for everyone, at the right price, was left to me! School holidays are always more expensive so after comparing several beach destinations imagine my delight when I found a cruise that was perfect! Travelling with Royal Caribbean on the amazing Navigator of the Seas® for 7 nights at a cost of only £750 per person!! The icing on the cake, beer and wine was included!! We hadn’t considered a cruise but the more we read, the more we decided it was the right holiday for us. It was so easy, no airport check-in and long transfers. We arrived at Southampton at 1100 and by 1145 we were lying on a sunbed sipping a cocktail. Our holiday had begun the moment we stepped on board. The ship was fantastic! The central point was the Royal Promenade which was an area in the middle of the ship featuring stylish boutiques, cafes and bars. Food is always an important part of our holidays and the Navigator did not disappoint. The Main Restaurant offered a mouthwatering menu but for something more casual we dined at the Windjammer Buffet. The food was fantastic and portions generous – by the end of the week I definitely think my clothes had shrunk!! Dress code was mainly casual in both the Main Restaurant or Windjammer but for those who like to dress up there were two formal nights in the Main Restaurant.

Facilities on board were brilliant. My sons aged 14 and 9 spent days at sea on the Flowrider, rock climbing and playing golf. All included in the cost and as many goes as you like. There were also kids clubs, an arcade and teen only zones to keep them happy. Varied entertainment was on offer from top shows in the main theatre, comedians or singing along in the “local pub”. My Mum really liked the Ice Show which I agree was spectacular. There was also a casino if you were feeling lucky or you could enjoy a cocktail in one of the many quieter bars and just watch the world go by. Day times could be as busy as you chose. The “Daily Planner” was delivered to our cabin each evening showing several activities that were happening the following day. This ranged from karaoke, family competitions and games or quizzes by the pool. I was also surprised that on a ship this size we still managed to find quiet spots for sunbathing, and no shortage of sunbeds. Our itinerary took us to France, Portugal and Spain. Royal Caribbean offer many excursions at each port and we found them very well organized. The excursion costs varied and we pre-purchased before we left home, which enabled us to budget in advance. Our only other cost was an internet package at $8 per day which was essential for my two nieces aged 16 and 17, but even they looked up from their phones regularly to join in with what we all agree was the best family holiday ever! It just goes to show that cruising can be for everyone. Lisa Hawken ® Manager, Bodmin

our friends and I decided to take a trip to Iceland during the winter months. On our first day we had a tour of the city of Reykjavik before visiting ‘The Pearl’ which is a lit dome constructed over a pool of naturally very hot water. We then visited the two tectonic plates that run diagonally across Iceland, one Eurasian and one American. A bridge has been built over the chasm that divides the plates, it widens by 2cm a year. The Icelandic houses are a ‘must see’, they are very picturesque with turf roofs, on average up to 12 people live in a house with one room and kitchen. One interesting fact that we learned was that for a population smaller than Cornwall, Iceland has 8 universities. The highlight of the holiday was the ‘Blue Lagoon’ which is a natural thermal pool. We were supplied with fresh towels when entering and exiting. The pools were very warm and heavenly. A local woman was distributing white silica clay which we applied as a face mask. A very relaxing experience especially with a cheeky glass of wine! The next day we visited a large hydroponic tomato farm followed by a very interesting visit to see ‘the Icelandic Horses’. This breed of horse is pure bred and can be exported but no other breed of horse can come into Iceland. Finally we visited the Gullfoss Waterfall, which is one of the main tourist attractions in Iceland, they are definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the Northern Lights, as we were there at the end of November, apparently January, February & March are the best months to witness this amazing natural phenomena. Overall it was a great trip and another place to tick off my bucket list! Mrs A.I Parsons – Redruth customer 11

ave you been looking at Greece for your next holiday, thumbing through brochures and on line and perhaps even reading the odd travel blog and books on Greece for inspiration? It’s not always easy to make a choice for your next holiday, is it? However, when it comes to why you should choose Greece, we can’t think of any reasons for not going! There are so many wonderful islands to choose from, so even if you’ve been before, you’re sure of a new experience and perhaps a different group of islands to explore this time. More than just a beach destination – combine beach, sun, sea, cuisine, culture and nightlife and you’ve got all the ingredients for the perfect holiday. Your time away is precious so you want to be sure of

making the right choice? Of course you do and there’s no need to panic as Olympic Holidays can answer all your questions. We have over 50 years of experience and lots of inside knowledge to help you find your perfect Greek Island getaway. Greece suits all tastes and budgets and is great for couples and families alike; with private villas and luxury hotels, comfortable and affordable selfcatering apartments and even some harder to find, tucked away little boutique places, if you want to properly chill out and be pampered. Take your pick from rural and quaint mountain escapes and charming fishing villages with colourful harbour scenes, to upscale cosmopolitan towns, steeped in history with ancient ruins and bursting with life. Beaches and

sun-kissed seas pretty much come as standard throughout Greece and nestled in amongst all of this you’ll encounter boutiques, local markets, windy cobbled streets and plenty of pavement restaurants and tavernas to while away the hours from morning through to dusk. One of the biggest treats in store for you is the fascinating architecture and heritage of the Greek Islands. There’s so much to explore, like the old town of Rhodes, fortified by ramparts and with its labyrinth of cobbled streets and decorative archways. Culture lovers will be in their element and kids too will find plenty to enjoy. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with just putting your feet up on holiday either! We all deserve some blissful relaxation from time to time and Greece is the perfect setting for this kind of escape. Roll out your towel, slap on some sun cream and lap up the long hours of sunshine you’ll find here on the long stretches of sublime sands, fine shingle beaches with tiny shells and in the hidden coves that can only be reached by boat. Then, when you need to stretch out those limbs, cool down in the warm seas and try some watersports, while enjoying a mountain backdrop of olive trees and fragrant lemon groves. Greek food is much underrated, but once you’ve sampled some local dishes like souvlaki, stifado and keftedes you’ll be hooked on the culinary treats. Your taste buds will be looking forward to more leisurely lunches enjoying a meze or freshly caught fish, sat harbourside watching yet another glorious sunset. Expect restaurants and tavernas around every corner in the larger towns and in the small

resorts and villages you’ll find tantalising tavernas; often family run and with a great atmosphere. You’ll be welcomed with open arms by friendly locals and meals are often accompanied by someone playing the guitar. The choices really are endless, with everything from local produce, traditional dishes and international meals on all the menus, so even if you’re travelling with children, who are normally a bit fussy, you’ll find something to suit. So, if you’ve tempted, pop into your local branch of Newell’s TRAVEL and they’ll book an Olympic holiday for you.

f I mention Oceania Cruises to many people both experienced or to cruise fledglings, the majority would know very little or, indeed, nothing at all about this wonderful Cruise Company. Formed in 2002 Oceania Cruises is one of the world’s leading upper premium cruise line. Their “claim to fame” is their undoubted culinary expertise where they budget more per passenger on food than any other cruise ships at sea and is the choice of travellers seeking a truly refined and casually elegant 5 star travel experience. Featuring a fleet of six warm and luxurious ships, Oceania Cruises offers an unrivalled holiday experience renowned for its gourmet culinary programme inspired by Master Chef Jacques Pépin and its array of destination-rich itineraries spanning the globe. Seasoned world travellers are drawn to Oceania Cruises’ diverse voyages, which call on more than 400 ports across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and the Americas. Spacious and elegant accommodations aboard the 684-guest Regatta, Insignia, Nautica and Sirena and the 1,250-guest Marina and Riviera invite guests to explore the world in unparalleled comfort and style. Helen and my MS Insignia experience began with a short 2 hour flight to Lisbon from Bristol where she was moored very close to the City centre, an obvious advantage of small ship cruising. As we had joined the ship mid-cruise, many of 16

her 684 passengers were ashore so the ship appeared very spacious, but when all her passengers returned the Insignia never seemed crowded. Dining is in The Grand Dining Room, the Polo Grill specialising in steaks or Toscana specialising in Italian cuisine and Waves Grill on the Pool Deck, the difficulty is your choice of venue! The atmosphere at dinner is very relaxed. The gentlemen wore open necked long sleeve shirts and occasionally a jacket and the ladies were, as always, most elegant. If a full length entertainment programme is important to you then perhaps Oceania Cruises may not be for you. Although the Lounge had nightly acts of light entertainment and duos, do not expect a full West End style musical show. A string quartet could be found in Horizons whilst enjoying afternoon tea or listen to their evening repertoire in the Atrium. Further background music is also provided by the resident pianist in the Martinis Bar. Another advantage of small ship cruising is the ability to visit some of the smaller and more interesting ports of call. From Lisbon we cruised to Oporto, famed for its celebrated Port Wine. Then to La Coruna one of Galicia’s most attractive cities and finally Bordeaux traversing the beautiful Gironde River All in all a wonderful 5 days of first class cruising and our huge thanks to Oceania Cruises. hina is a vast and amazing country. I wanted to plan an adventure to visit my daughter, who was working in Guiyang, but I also wanted the opportunity to tour the country with my husband and see China’s most iconic sights. I visited Newell’s TRAVEL in Truro with very rough plans of what I wished to do. Steph Borys was brilliant she did research on my behalf and suggested other ideas and possibilities. Newell’s TRAVEL luckily had their Travel Show on at this time and so I was able to visit their Wendy Wu stand and start to create my adventure. Wendy Wu Tours organise fantastic journeys throughout China and are flexible to accommodate travellers like myself. They even sort out your visa. Steph liaised with Wendy Wu to plan an awesome 5 week trip involving staying and travelling independently with my daughter followed by a Wonders of China tour. Newell’s TRAVEL sorted all my transport issues and even helped me with my transfer between the Beijing Terminals which can be a little tricky!

Reports from the people who count, our customers
When based in Guiyang, with my daughter, I explored the city, experienced all kinds of shopping, visited my daughter’s school and had meals with her Chinese friends. We also travelled on basic public transport which was very interesting at times. We went to Lijiang and Shangri La, amazing places. We visited monasteries, old natural temples, went up huge mountains and found our own accommodation and food. I also experienced the local public toilets … be warned not for the faint hearted! Later on my Wendy Wu tour, our tour guide always found good toilets which she called the “happy house!” After a couple of weeks I flew back to Beijing to meet my husband and join our tour. Vivian, our guide, met me at the airport and took me to join our touring party (12 in total). Vivian had exceptional knowledge of China. Throughout our tour she gave us endless information about everything we visited and saw. She also made our internal flights and other transport quick and hassle free. We had an action packed tour of China. In Beijing we visited all the famous landmarks, old ones such as Tiananmen

Square and the Forbidden City and modern buildings such as the ‘Birds Nest’ Olympic Stadium. We rode rickshaws through the hutongs (alleys formed by lines of traditional courtyard residences) and climbed the Great Wall. We flew to Xian to see the city and the Terracotta Warriors, cruised down the Yangtze River for 5 days, visited the pandas and were overwhelmed at the amazing scenery and lifestyle in Guilin and Yangshou. Finally, we flew to Shanghai to sample this fantastic futuristic city in lots of different ways. Everywhere we travelled we did so many extra things, visited unusual venues and had traditional meals from the local area. In the evenings there were always dance shows, Kung Fu displays, extra sightseeing and other Chinese entertainment. The whole experience was awesome. A huge thank you to Newell’s TRAVEL for co-ordinating and helping me plan such a brilliant holiday and a big thank you to Wendy Wu for what they do naturally. Mrs Judy Barnfield - St Agnes

My Grand Prix Experience
A
lison Buckingham, from our Redruth office, recently experienced the British Grand Prix first-hand as our courier and this is what she had to say “I had the pleasure of being the courier on the Newell’s TRAVEL 3 day special coach trip to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and it was very exciting. The coach journey was very easy and we went straight to Silverstone for the first practice session. There are lots of things going on all day in and around the track, so when there is no racing you can look around and participate in a variety of events. On Friday, even with a general admission ticket, you are allowed into any of the stands so it was lovely to walk around the track and just soak in the atmosphere. We left Silverstone after the practices and went to our hotel, the Hilton at Luton, a lovely modern hotel with large rooms.
The second day, Saturday, we were all up early for a full day of Porsche, F2 racing plus F1 qualifying, which was brilliant. The smell of the engines and the noise just brings the whole event to life. On the main stage drivers and those connected with the sport were being interviewed as well as music throughout the day. As you wander around there are plenty of food stalls and shopping opportunities all around the track. Sunday, race day and the whole world got there early!! The place was absolutely buzzing and the stands filled up really quickly. The main event isn’t until lunch time but there are all sorts of other races taking place. I was lucky to get a good spot to watch the race and stayed there all day. All I can say is that it was amazing to watch, enjoy and revel in the unique atmosphere – I loved every minute of it and you don’t need to be a super fan, it is an amazing experience for everyone to enjoy”. isa Holdroff celebrated 30 years with Newell’s TRAVEL and this is what she said “once upon a time in 1987 I began my career with Newell’s TRAVEL things were certainly different back then, let me take you back: Fancy smoking on your flight? Of course, and if the smoking seats were full, just walk to the back of the plane and light up. Worried about baggage allowance - it wasn’t even weighed most of the time, I hand wrote air tickets and check-in was always at the airport. Reservations were made on the telephone or on our new Prestel system. All Inclusive was born and included cigarettes and sometimes cigars! This was all before the World Wide Web - families wanted activities not WiFi. Photographs were taken and printed out when you got home - hoping for a few good ones from a roll of 36!” Wow, how things have changed! Lisa Holdroff – Assistant Manager, Falmouth 23
