RHODE ISLAND IS ONLY 37 MILES WIDE by 48 miles long. It’s barely the size of a large cattle ranch in Texas. As the smallest state in the United States, Rhode Island has played a significant role in the history of our country. The first military action in the Revolutionary War with England was in upper Narragansett Bay with the sinking of the British Schooner the Gaspee in 1772. Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was publicly acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams as the originator of the concepts and principles of the First Amendment. The Industrial Revolution began in America with the development and construction of the first cotton mill. It was water powered by the Blackstone River in Pawtucket RI. The list goes on and on! Rhode Island has always been the state that could, and would, get it done.

In 1972, Rhode Island was officially named “The Ocean State,” as nowhere in the state are you ever more than 30 minutes’ drive to the sea. For such a small state landwise, incredibly, Rhode Island has 400 miles of coastal shorelines strewn with iconic communities that make for great seaside living in the “Ocean State.” The State is broken into 5 Regions: South County, Central Rhode Island / West Bay, the Capital Region Providence, Northern Rhode Island, and The East Bay. Each region is uniquely different, offering residents and visitors a flavor all their own.

There are few places anywhere in the world where coastal living can represent so many different choices. There are waterfront metro markets in Providence, historic seaside cities in Newport, sprawling beach towns across South County and island living in the East Bay and Block Island.

Across Narragansett Bay, along The East Passage of the Sakonnet River, is Rhode island’s quiet “Secret Coast” where Tiverton and Little Compton are bordered by the Southcoast of Massachusetts.

Rhode Island is and always will be a favorite New England place for those looking to be by the sea, smell the salt air, stroll the beautiful beaches, and enjoy the amazing bounty from the sea and local farms. It is all about coastal living and costal life in a very small, but very precious place.
