Living with New Choices Second Homes are Filling a New Role “NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION” is an English-language proverb. It means, roughly, that the primary driving force for most new trends and inventions is need; this could never be truer than it is today. If the year 2020 has taught us anything, it would be to expect the unexpected. No one could have imagined that our lives would be so affected in so many ways by the events that have occurred in the last 10 months. What we have learned from all of this will eventually become the catalyst that will change all of our lives moving forward for years to come.

Much like 9/11, the events of the last year will have a profound impact on our living, working, and social environments throughout society as a whole. There will not be “Back to Normal” but instead, back to a new normal that will be forever different for us all. We will evolve, we will adapt, and eventually we will move on with a new focus that will be open to solutions for living with choices and flexibility.

A new real estate market term has grown in popularity out of this crisis called “Co-Primary Homes.” To put it simply, second homes and vacation home properties have now transitioned into this new category as viable solutions in tenuous times. The rise of the “co-primary” home,

that is a second home, isn’t so secondary anymore. Rather, it is seen as an alternative primary residence for homeowners to flee the confines and density of the city with more square footage, a home office and plenty of space outdoors in a secure setting.

“Secondary /vacation homes are more popular than ever, and in rural northeast markets, southern markets and even mountain retreats regions, there has been a huge surge in new activity. The idea of opting for a smaller residence or even renting in major metro markets and owning larger primary homes in more rural or vacation home markets is gaining popularity. Owning a vacation home has long been a way to bring families together. There has never been a better time to shop for a second home and the mortgage rates make it even more possible today.

veryone wakes up every day, Monday through Friday, focusing on work and how they

are going to help their families move forward. However, I do believe there is a void if all we focus on is making a living and forget that we are actually alive.

Translation, I practice gratitude on a daily basis not because I have to, but because I choose to. Every

day I’m thankful for two experiences that happened the day before and for two people that have made an impact on me. When we view the world through this lens we’re already off to a great start.
