The Cape & The Island’s “Old Cape Cod”
I
n 1900, prior to the construction of the Cape Cod Canal, the actual land borders of the Cape region were well into Plymouth County. Plymouth makes up the eastern shore of Cape Cod Bay and both Barnstable and Sandwich were the first two annexed towns in Plymouth Colony. Early in the 1900s the Cape Cod region encompassed Wareham, Onset and a large portion of southern Plymouth. The Cape Cod Canal was constructed because the shipping route around the Cape, through Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard Sound became one of the most treacherous marine routes in North American. It was not until the canal was finished in 1916 that people began to acknowledge the border of the canal and bridges as the beginning of Cape Cod. In the 1950s Cape Cod’s total population was around 40,000, mostly living in the Upper Cape and Mid Cape regions. There were only about 6000 residents on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket at the time. By 1960, over 2500 summer homes were built in Cape Cod & The Islands. At that time, only 65% of the homes were for year-round living; ironically, in 2020 those numbers remain relatively the same. The population of Cape Cod and the Islands grows to over 750,000 people for the busy summer months, many of whom will purchase seasonal and year-round homes.
Today, Cape Cod & The Islands are home to just over 250,000 year-round residents. Tourism has taken over as the main industry with more than 3500 hospitality and hotel facilities. Living on Cape Cod is simply matchless by all measures, and residents will tell you that in most cases the feel of the “Old Cape Cod” life is alive and well even today. The Cape is 65 miles in length and ranges from 1 mile wide to 20 miles wide, no matter where you are, you’re not far from a beach or beautiful coastal area. All of the 15 towns on the Cape are in Barnstable County. Dukes County covers Martha’s Vineyard and The Elizabeth Islands. Nantucket is the only town in Nantucket County. The Cape & Islands has become one of the most soughtafter regions for real estate in the country over the last 10 years. Prices in all regions are up significantly and buyers far outweigh sellers in all markets. This trend shows no sign of slowing anytime soon, great places to live tend to be in short supply always.• All the Best,
