FROM THE EDITOR T H E P U R S U I T O F G R E AT N E S S

Focus on the target

A

“Golf much like life takes planning and preparation, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

RNOLD PALMER once said, “Golf is a game predominantly played in the six inches between the ears.”

Research has proved that Mr. Palmer was correct, how we process information and use this information in play and practice determines our ability to play the game at a higher level. I can recall numerous times being outplayed by golfers who better played the course instead of having the course play them. Golf much like life takes planning and preparation, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Evelyn Wood mastered accelerated speed reading by using memory dynamics. The same secret was used for learning to type, the mind’s eye knows where the keys are. The question is does this apply to all things in life, including golf. The answer is a resounding yes! Most of us misinterpret and overthink the main objective Arnold Palmer of the game of golf. If you were throwing a ball at another person you would just throw it. In most cases, it would be at that person or target without thought, and easily repeatable. The same is true with all repeatable motions including walking, driving, riding a bike, or even throwing something into a trash basket, you don’t think it, you just do it. Seriously, how hard is it to bowl? You just roll the ball and most times you hit a few pins. We see targets in simple things in life, but in golf, we are

stuck on outcomes and see obstacles instead of simple targets. Have you ever noticed in mini-golf that almost no one is that far off course? Could it be they see the hole and that’s their focus, the target again! There are thousands of game improvement products in golf, and tens of thousands of golf instructors, teaching facilities and schools dedicated to teaching simple principles of the game to millions of players each year. In baseball, you are hitting a ball moving at 50 to 100 MPH with a batting surface smaller than your driver. In hockey, you are on ice hitting a moving puck while skating and avoiding other players with one of them blocking your target. In golf, we can’t seem to hit a green from 50 yards away that is the size of a small house lot! What is missing here! Timothy R. Branco Editor, Northeast Golf

COVER STORY WEDOO GOLF

CONNECT WITH ...

WEDOO.GOLF GOLF IS A GAME that brings like-minded people together, enabling the development and maintenance of lasting friendships. It is a game that allows us all to meet new people, make new friends, and play new courses in new places. Golf is one of the few sports that cross age brackets and one you can play well into your later years in life. Whether you are new to golf, a seasoned golfer, or a traveler in a different city, finding the right people to play rounds with can become a challenge. At most golf clubs, the club pro pairs single players and twosomes with other partial groups to maximize the efficiency of golf rounds and allow players to play with others. It is a system as old as the game itself and really has been the only option for new players in the game to play more golf and meet new friends. While it is a great system, it falls well short of connecting us to play more golf together in the future. We all have played golf with great people but failed to share contact information that would connect us to future opportunities to play again and keep in touch. The social element of golf is well-renowned – providing individuals with an opportunity to spend time with friends in great surroundings. Golf has been shown to enhance interaction between different generations and has been proven to provide opportunities to enhance social connections. The amazing growth of social networks has connected millions of people worldwide in just over two decades. The popular GolfNow App has allowed golfers to book tee times at thousands of courses online worldwide. Yet, it seems no one has made the social connection in the game of golf work to enable golfers to meet, play, and socially interact in one place, that is, until now! Welcome to WEDOO.GOLF. WEDOO.GOLF is designed to connect golfers through a simple to use digital platform app that allows players in the game more opportunities to play, create new golfing

relationships, and interact with a community. WEDOO. GOLF expands your golf universe by immersing the user into a new world of golfing opportunities and social golf connections to share your game experiences. WEDOO. GOLF is a private digital platform, aiming to put “fun” in golf games wherever there are golf facilities, to search for golf games, and to participate in contests and small tournaments as well. In the true spirit of the golf entertainment industry giant, Top Golf has brought great fun to millions of new players in the game. WEDOO.GOLF has taken that vision to a new social level by introducing golfers to a new simple way to personally grow their golf network of friends, playing partners, and golf fun. One of the company’s founders from France, CEO Gaetan Mauguin said, “The WEDOO.GOLF platform has been created for golfers in a fully private environment with no ads in order to fulfill a need of staying in touch and making new golf friendships around the game. The idea came from the need I had with my friends to share our moments and our willingness to have a lot of them, enlarging our circle each weekend with new people we have met through the game. Our aim is to provide golfers, golf clubs, and golf course owners the physical means to increase fun and engagement in and around the game. WEDOO.GOLF revolutionizes the industry by reversing the entire app concept: we take our users FROM their smartphone and ONTO the golf courses with their friends. Not the other way around! Our goal at WEDOO.GOLF is to enhance your experience and make each golf game on the green the best and most fun possible with our app.”

The WEDOO.GOLF app offers free access to the system for those wanting to try some of the basic features of the platform. It enables the user access to courses, golf rounds, and some primary features and contests. Access to their Silver, Gold, and Diamond membership requires a nominal annual fee and offers expansive features and benefits for individual golfers and golf clubs. At the Diamond level, WEDOO.GOLF offers extensive access to contests, interactive events, polls, and members’ personal pages as well, at a very moderate annual fee. Each month the team at WEDOO.GOLF is adding new features and membership benefits to enhance the overall experience. They offer special subscription rates and dedicated features for golf pros and golf course owners to create increased revenue opportunities for their facilities by connecting members and guests who play at their courses. 12

Because playing golf is not primarily about sport or competition, it is about spending quality time with people who share the same passions for the entire golf experience as you do.

It was P.G Wodehouse who once said, “To find a man’s true character, Play golf with him.” It is indeed a sport that allows you to explore many dimensions of your personality and the personality of others. The golf course provides the ideal setting for people to come together and share those moments with you. And given that it is a relatively quiet game, golf gives you quality time to talk and share stories as you make your way around the course. Following a game with a beer or prosecco at the clubhouse bar can be an excellent way to wind down and meet even more golfers from within your community and beyond. To take all these experiences in golf to the next level we have created the perfect platform for all golfers. Play golf, have Fun and Connect with WEDOO.GOLF

Training Aids Can Improve Your Game BY ED TRAVIS

GOLF TRAINING AIDS have been around since the 1800s, however

that hasn’t stopped clever modern-day innovators from coming up with improvements to these oldies but goodies even if it’s only making use of 21st-century materials. Nor have they been deterred from thinking of new devices for us to learn an efficient distance-producing, controlled swing that usually means less slice. Less of that distancerobbing, target-missing, left-to-right, ugly, even embarrassing, ball flight statistics tell us is what most recreational players fight every time they tee it up.

ON THE RANGE LOWER YOUR SCORES

A couple of caveats to consider when using training devices. No one training device works for everyone. It may be uncomfortable to use or require motion beyond our ability and each one must be used the way in which it was intended. Some are targeted for correcting one specific problem such as coming over the top, a major reason why more than 80% of golfers slice. Others are meant in a more general way to improve our timing, address, or impact position. Training aids may also be a way to get more out of a lesson from a PGA Professional, but be sure to have his or her approval that a particular device is reinforcing the lesson principles they want you to have. Below are some new training aids we think are worth evaluating many of which we saw at the PGA Show in Orlando back in January.

Aero-Swing Aero-Swing slips over the shaft of any club with clips to secure it in place. As the club is swung the holes in Aero-Swing’s surface create the aerodynamic drag, up to 10-12 mph at the bottom of the swing, providing training for more club speed. It can be used when hitting balls on the range or for a preround warm up, and up to three can be used at one time. Great for all player skill levels.

Package of two Aero-Swings $49.95. Alignment Ball Mark Half of the problem of making putts is hitting the ball on the right line and this is addressed by the Alignment Ball Mark, winner of Best New Product at the recent PGA Show. Just mark your ball, which must have an alignment line with the Ball Mark, adjust the rotating alignment arrow to the line of

the putt then replace the ball in its previous spot so the ball line matches the Ball Mark line; make the putt.

$9.99 each Better Stikz Golf Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best and alignment sticks, particularly as made by Better Stikz Golf, fall into that category. They are a great way of practicing the correct setup and alignment even for pros. Two Better Stikz are connected by a cord that, when stretched taut, ensure the Stikz are parallel, and the cord may be clipped along the length for different clubs.

Package of three Better Stikz $39.99 GolfForever Swing Trainer Swing training to include fitness and flexibility is the idea behind the GolfForever Swing Trainer. The bar is both a D3 swing-weight club for warming up before your round while building swing speed with an interchangeable lighter weight and a resistance cord trainer to improve core strength and rotational power at home. Justin Leonard helped in its development and there’s an optional app to customize your routine.

Slice in 20 Seconds.” The bright red and yellow blades provide a highly visual check of the club position throughout the swing and the included booklet plus instructional videos on the website give step-by-step lessons for its use. Since it easily slips on a golf shaft it may be used with every club in the bag including the putter.

Priced at $19.99. Lag Shot Improving impact with the ball is a sure way to become a better iron player and the Lag Shot 7-iron helps you do that. This weighted clubhead and flexible-shaft practice club allow you to hit balls while learning to have the clubhead stay behind your hands through impact plus promoting a one-piece 16

takeaway not to mention building confidence and more distance.

The 7-iron is $119.00, and a driver and wedge are available. Precision Impact This padded brace fits on the right forearm and hand (for right-handed players) and teaches the correct wrist position at the top of the backswing, the rotation of arms back and through plus the way the shaft should lean at impact. It is effectively stopping the deadly flipping of the wrists and may be used with a driver or irons. The Precision Impact is especially good to train the correct method for chipping and pitching.

shoulder width, the correct adjustment for the angled bar is determined based on body size. On the ground, the ball position, distance to the ball, slightly toed out left foot, and square to the intended line right foot are indicated for every club.

To be on the market soon. Tour Aim Golf The Tour Aim board solves the problem of aiming where the ball should start, which is on the line of the shot, plus can be used for teaching the proper swing plane with each club. The multi-holed board uses alignment rods to bracket the line and one to point down the target line. It works for the full swing as well as chipping or putting with holes for the rods to show the swing plane back or forward.

Priced at $79.00 with three alignment rods.

DRIVE TIME! Golf Resorts in the East BY ALICE & DANNY SCOTT New Seabury

THE COUNTRY SIDE is blooming with color and golf courses are opening, which means “drive time” for northeasterners. When traveling, we ask ourselves, would we want to live here? Often when returning after a few years we think, dang we should have bought back then, especially in resort communities where you can live like every day is a vacation. North to south, here are some of those drivable destinations where pretty days after a long winter might trick you in to buying real estate. But then, that could be a very good thing.

Sunday River Newry, ME Sunday River is a lovely drive to the Mahoosuc Mountains of Maine where the Robert Trent Jones II design is navigated by carts, no walkers, because the distance and slopes are almost as extreme as the ski slopes above. Ski lingo is noted on course with number one labeled Alpine Start. Ride the Chondola to the actual ski slopes for a bird’s eye view of the course and countryside below. Rest at the Jordan Hotel, an alpine lodge adorned with old time posters inside. 18

The Bear’s 18-hole course is a hoot to play with the front nine along the Pemi River Valley and the back nine climbing high with voluminous views of the White Mountains. Golf Where the Baja Desert Meets the Pacific Ocean

Cabo San Lucas Country Club

In 1992

Jack Nicklaus arrived in Cabo and designed the first Nicklaus golf course in Latin America, Palmilla. Since then, Jack has designed 6 additional courses. Cabo is home to Dye Course, as well as Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Weskopt, Arthur Hills, Greg Norman, Davis Love, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. It is virtually a “Hall of Fame of Golf Course Designs” by the very best. The only place in the world where you find such a collection of truly amazing golf experiences.

Tiger Woods Design at Diamante

As late as the 1970s, Los Cabos was little more than a collection of quaint fishing villages. Today, it’s an international hot spot dotted with luxurious oceanfront hotels, bustling restaurants and bars, natural and cultural attractions galore, and golf courses that make superb use of their stunning settings. Spend a day in Cabo and you’ll understand immediately why the area is regarded as one of Mexico’s national treasures; spend a week there and you may never want to leave. The golf in Los Cabos is a lot like what you’ll find in the America,s southwest. It’s target golf on ribbons of emerald green turf with stunning ocean views from every course.

From the minute you land at Los Cabos International Airport, you’ll know you’re in for a special experience. Within steps of the Arrivals Hall, Los Cabos welcomes you with a plethora of lively, open-air bars. Stopping for an ice-cold cerveza or margarita before you head to your hotel is practically mandatory. In route to your hotel, you’ll quickly get a feel for what makes this area so special. The red sandstone mountains. The cactus-laden desert crisscrossed by dry arroyos, and ultimately, the sparkling sea. In addition to golf, Los Cabos offers a myriad of other ways to have fun in the sun. You can go sportfishing for marlin, tuna, and other trophy catches just minutes from shore. Take boating excursions to see The Arch or go whalewatching; snorkeling in the clear, blue waters is also popular. At the moment, Los Cabos is one of the few international golf destinations that Americans can visit. It’s easy to get there via many major airlines, and the hotels and other tourism providers have taken every precaution to help ensure a safe visit. In fact, many of the destinations hotels and resorts are participating in a new health security protocol, “Sharecare Verified” by Forbes Travel Guide, that’s supported by leading travel agency brands such as Distincte Travel Group.

Sean Winton, Founder and President of Distincte Travel Group, a lifestyle travel company that specializes in golf experiences www.distincte.com believes Cabo is now one of the hottest golf travel destinations and will be for years to come. “Golf pilgrimages to the famed links courses of Scotland and Ireland are presently oversold,” Winton said, “at least until early 2023. Simply put, there’s just very little available inventory this year. Golfers will need a place to go—a destination that’s not only open but matches the high standards desired for a proper golf experience. We’re advising clients to swap out whisky for tequila, and to go where the desert meets the mighty Pacific – Los Cabos. People who haven’t traveled there will be astounded at how good it is. For those who have visited before, it’s the perfect time to go back.” To book your golf experience in Los Cabos, go to: www.CaboGolfLife.com, where the very best of Los Cabos is just a click away. www.visitloscabos.travel 28

The Best Courses You Can Play in New York and Connecticut

Trump Golf Links

THE STATES OF NEW YORK AND CONNECTICUT have great golf history dating back to the very beginnings of the game in America. By 1900 this Northeast region had more than 50% of all golf courses in the country. By the numbers, the popularity of Northeast Golf and its impact on the game is just staggering. Texas and California have a population of just under 75 million, with 1500+ golf courses. New York and Connecticut have a population of just under 24 million with 1100+ golf courses. It is no secret that Northeast Golfers represent the largest and most affluent industry demographic in the game today. It is no surprise that over 80% of all U.S. Open Championships have been contested in the Northeast. For public access to golf, our region has some of the very best facilities anywhere in the world. What is ironic is that Northeast golfers, who represent the largest golf travel demographic in the country, often overlook the great courses in their own backyard. The region is blessed with public access golf courses designed by the very best golf course architects in the history of the game. There are seaside, parkland, cityside, and mountainside choices in almost every state in the Northeast. In addition, there are resorts with multiple courses, some of the top municipal tracks anywhere, and a

host of popular golf trails throughout the region. Both New York and Connecticut are states where population density is much higher along the eastern seaboard. Here you will find the highest concentration of courses. Along the Hudson River basin in both New York and Connecticut there are countless amazing golf facilities and Upstate New York offers a plethora of spectacular courses to play from Albany to Buffalo. INDOOR GOLF CLARITY GOLF

The Critical Components of a Simulator Part One: The Launch Monitor BY BILL BALES

The launch monitor is the heart of any indoor golf simulator. It is a piece of hardware that ties in software and firmware for the purpose of gathering “The radar guys and reporting the have continued kinematics of the initial to refine launch launch of a golf ball– calculation over what a golf shot is doing the years.” right after you hit it. Two technologies have emerged to dominate all but the lowest forms of launch monitors: phased array radar and machine vision (imaging). Simple radar devices are relatively inexpensive, and do a great job of measuring the velocity of balls and club heads at launch, we’ll focus on the good stuff–3D phased array radar.

Phased array radar, using multiple antennas, extracts 3D positional data which define trajectory and velocity. Think of a loaf of sliced bread. As the ball travels through each slice the radar determines the X (left/right) and Y (up/down) position. The radar also timestamps the position through each slice–determining the Z data (outward). Disruptions in the radio waves produced by the radar also produce squiggly lines from which radar geniuses calculate spin rate. But phased array radar devices are not true launch monitors. They are long range ballistic trackers. It is great at measuring a golf shot for its entire flight–350 yards or more. It has no equal for this task, although it can be done with imaging. The downside of radar is that it is incapable of measuring the axis of spin of a golf shot. The way the radar guys get around this is by studying the

curvature of the ball in flight, although indoors the ball flies no more than fifteen feet. Axis calculation is aided in this case by factoring other measurements of ball and club. Machine vision (imaging) is easier to explain. The best imaging-based systems are true launch monitors. They get clear stereo (3D) pictures of the ball at launch. The goal is to get two great sets of images, timestamped. Knowing the accurate timestamped 3D position of the ball in two places enables directly measured trajectory and spin velocity. Axis is measured by looking at logos or other marks placed on the ball. So, for an indoor simulator, which is better? I was the first simulator producer to use phased array radar. I also was the first simulator producer to apply true machine vision, permanently replacing radar. That somewhat answers the question, but the radar guys have continued to refine launch calculation over the years. This is just a superficial look at what it takes to make the right decision for your simulator. As Northeast Golf’s adviser on indoor golf, feel free to email me at BillBales@Clarity.Golf. Tell me what you want to do, how much you want to spend, and what your current preferences are. I’ll give you the best feedback I can.

BUCKLE UP Nexbelt debuts youth-size series

DUE TO A LACK of availability or options, kids often have to wear adult sized belts on the golf course and subsequently their parents are forced to pay adult size prices. Well, not anymore! Nexbelt, “The Belt With No Holes” has changed all that. Nexbelt has designed a series of Youth Belts with straps that are narrower and sized more proportionally for kids, and best of all, at just $33.99, they’re priced for a growing body. Nexbelt, the leader in ratchet-style golf belts, is already known for its innovative technology and providing golfers with the maximum comfort and minimal adjusting.

Their unique ratcheting system called PreciseFit allows the wearer to adjust the belt in ¼ inch increments, providing the best fit, feel, and fashion available. Company Founders, Tom Hunsucker, and Eddie and Francis Rowland started Nexbelt in 2010 with a vision to reinvent the way Americans buy, sell and wear their belts. Tired of the old, outdated pin/buckle system, they set their sights on creating a belt that would be both adjustable and highly fashionable at the same time. Out of this passion, Nexbelt, “The Belt With No Holes” was born. You can choose from Nexbelt’s selection

of Youth Braided Belts like the Liberty, Charcoal or Anchor, which are not only extremely fashionable but provide the ultimate in comfort as they “give” or “stretch” a little bit when you wear them. Or, if you prefer a more traditional look, choose one of their GO-IN “vegan-style” leather belts that are available in Black, White, Grey or Dark Grey. The buckle of these belts flip down to reveal a fun, hidden Emoji ball marker, another Nexbelt exclusive, that kids will absolutely love. With over 40 players wearing Nexbelt on the Professional Golf Tours, it’s

All of the Youth Series belts from Nexbelt are cut-to-fit and will accommodate up to a 35” waist. MOLORI UNPLUGGED

By John Molori

Strange reflects on epic 1988 U.S. Open win at Brookline When the U.S. Open returns to The Country Club in Brookline, MA this summer (June 16-19), it will do so cloaked in the echoes of past champions. Yes, we all know about September 20, 1913, when Francis Ouimet, a 20-year-old amateur and ex-caddie at Brookline, won the U.S. Open in a playoff, but I am referring to another legendary playoff win some 75 years later. In 1988, two of the best players in the world, both eventual World Golf Hall of Famers, engaged in a battle for the ages. Curtis Strange and Nick Faldo duked it out on the final Sunday of play, and then in a memorable 18-hole Monday playoff, with the Virginia native Strange taking the crown. Now a golf analyst for ESPN, Strange reflects on his mood heading into the tournament. “I was playing well, and my confidence was good,” says Strange, an NCAA Champion at Wake Forest and 3-time Golf Writers Association of America Player of the Year. “A career is baby steps of improvement. I had a good belief in myself heading into that tournament, and I was comfortable with my game. Then, the week before the tournament, Hale Irwin called me ‘the best player in the world.’ I was like, ‘Thanks a lot, buddy!’ Talk about putting pressure on someone.” Strange handled that pressure, helped by the magical atmosphere of The Country Club and the local golf crazies. He relates, “The Monday before the tournament was the first time I saw the course. It really flowed, so historic and traditional, a real U.S. Open style course. Golfers love that. “I can never put into words what those fans meant to me. Boston fans are great sports fans. I really gained a lot from the crowd when I needed energy. On Sunday (final round), I really felt the people rooting for me. It was amazing.” As Strange arrived for the Monday playoff, he got another Boston surprise. “On Sunday night before the playoff, people were saying to me, ‘Don’t be disappointed if there’s not a big crowd tomorrow. Everyone has to go back to work.’ Well, I got there at

6am, and there were already 15 to 20,000 people out there.” Strange topped the leader board heading into the final round, but bogeyed two of the first three holes thereby losing the lead to Faldo, with whom he was paired. He three-putted the 17th setting up the tie and playoff. “There is a strange feeling when you are playing an 18-hole playoff on a Monday,” says Strange. “There is NORTHE AS T.GO L F | AP R I L / M AY 2022

only one guy to be concerned about. Nick and I were both no BS guys who did not exchange a lot of words. Nether one of us was going to give the other anything.” In that playoff, it was Strange’s putting that gave him the win. On the 5th hole, he drained a 10-footer for birdie. On the 7th, he hit a 20-footer, and on the 13th, an unforgettable 30-footer. Says Strange, “If you are playing for the U.S. Open Championship in a playoff, you had to be doing everything well for the previous four days. The Country Club is an exacting course with small greens, so you have to be on top of everything, but hitting that 30-footer on a downhill at 13 was key for me.” The win not only gave Strange a national title, but also his first-ever Major victory. He led the PGA TOUR in money winnings in 1985, ’87, and ’88, and had won 14 PGA TOUR events, but the Major had excruciatingly eluded him. He states, “We put a lot of emphasis on four days a 50

year in golf. I always tried to just go about my business, concentrate, and do my job. Of course, I didn’t get a lot of sleep the night before the playoff. The hardest time for a golfer is that time when you wake up until you tee off.”

If Strange was a little edgy before he won, how did he feel after the victory? He responds, “I was numb. You really don’t know what to do or say. My wife Sarah and I went out to dinner late on Monday and just stared at each other. “It was a dream come true, but then it’s back to work. The next day, I had to fly to France - with Nick Faldo by the way - for the French Open.” Strange’s father Tom was a well-respected club pro in Virginia, so golf was truly a family heirloom. Sadly, Tom Strange passed away when Curtis was just 14 years old. The younger Strange gets emotional when talking about it. “If anyone got cheated out of anything, it was him. I can only imagine how proud and excited he would have been. You get emotional when you think about all the people who helped get you through along the way. My brother and I had a really deep conversation that night after I won the ’88 U.S. Open. It was great.” The name Curtis Strange is synonymous with success in the game of golf. In 1989, he garnered his second straight U.S. Open, winning at Oak Hill. Overall, he won 17 PGA TOUR events, played on the U.S. Ryder Cup team five times, and was team captain in 2002. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2007. Still, when asked where his 1988 win in Brookline rates, Strange answers emphatically, “It was the number one moment of my career. I’m an American, so for me, winning your national championship is the pinnacle of golf. “I know the history of the game and The Country Club with Francis Ouimet. You could not have written a better script. To win in a playoff in front of those Boston fans at the Country Club was so special.” These days, as an ESPN analyst, Strange covers the Masters and the PGA Championship, but as great as those events are, he will always look back on his 1988 U.S. Open victory, the drive toward excellence, and the significance of having it happen at The Country Club with unique joy. “I always had a will to work,” says Strange. “The one thing you can control is your work ethic. I like players in all sports who combine talent with drive, hunger, and being a little bit of a hard ass. “Boston has always embraced those type of athletes - like Larry Bird and Carl Yastrzemski. On that Monday playoff, when I came up to the 18th knowing that the tournament was won, the ovation from those fans was wonderful. Boston adopted a southern boy that day.”
