COVER STORY THE U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

A lot has changed in 34 years: if there’s a tie after 72 holes, it won’t be decided in an 18-hole playoff, and the field will encounter a course that has been lengthened by more than 250 yards. But yardage alone doesn’t tell the story of the changes to the layout that – in one form or another – has hosted 16 previous USGA championships, starting with the 1902 U.S. Women’s Amateur. “You’ve heard us say that the ghosts of the past matter, and The Country Club is one of the five founding clubs of the USGA,” said Jeff Hall, managing director of Rules and Open Championships. “But you don’t get to host a U.S. Open just because you’re a founding club. It’s got great history and it will be exciting to expand on that history in June.” In 1913, the club provided a seminal moment in the game’s annals: Francis Ouimet’s shocking U.S. Open playoff victory over English titans Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Next June, competitors will play a hole that hasn’t been used in a U.S. Open since then. In the 1963 and 1988 U.S. Opens (which marked the 50th and 75th anniversaries of Ouimet’s feat), players skipped the par-3 hole that will play as No. 11. The last time it was used in an Open, Ouimet took control of the playoff with a par as both of his foes bogeyed. Hall is delighted to bring back the 131-yard hole defended by four bunkers and a fronting brook. “Let’s face it, it’s a wedge for these guys, and yet there will be some players walking to the 12th tee having just marked a ‘4’ on their card and wondering what happened,” said Hall, who has been involved in U.S. Open setup since 2006. “I’ve got nothing against a big par 3, but they don’t have to be 225- or 230-yard brutes to require execution at the highest level.” 12

JU N E / J U LY 2 02 2 | N O RTHE AST.G OLF

In 1963, TCC and the USGA debuted a U.S. Open routing that incorporated several holes from the club’s nine-hole Primrose Course, and Julius Boros (70) earned his second Open title and third major victory over Jacky Cupit (73) and Arnold Palmer (76), who lost three 18-hole playoffs in a five-year span. To accommodate the return of the par-3 11th hole in June, the par-4 fourth hole will be taken out of play. Four other holes have notable changes: two take new positions in the routing, and two swap par. The holes that will play as Nos. 8 and 9 were No. 14 and No. 13, respectively, in 1988. The swap balances the nines and facilitates the Nos. 1 and 10 tee start needed for Rounds 1 and 2 (the two-tee start wasn’t a factor in 1988; it debuted in the 2002 U.S. Open). The holes that swap par are No. 10 (from 5 to 4) and No. 14 (from 4 to 5). The 14th played as a 450-yard par 4 in 1988 and has been transformed to a 619-yard par 5. The 10th was a 510-yard par 5 in 1988 and is now a 499-yard par 4. Both of those reconfigured holes made their USGA debuts in the 2013 U.S. Amateur, won by Matthew Fitzpatrick of England. “The changes add a degree of difficulty over what we had in 1988,” said Hall. “On No. 14, if you miss the fairway

from the tee, you may be forced to lay up, which leaves you with a blind, uphill third shot of 160 to 165 yards.” “[Architect] Gil Hanse has done some work that allows us to keep the long holes long, and the shorter holes will still be demanding,” said Hall. “Like any U.S. Open, you’ve got to have control of your ball. It’s going to be fascinating to watch.” Hanse used images taken when TCC hosted the 1934 U.S. Amateur to reestablish lost features and bring greens closer to bunkers, in many cases removing rough between them. Character and history are omnipresent at The Country Club, which will have hosted at least one USGA championship in 12 of the 13 decades since 1900. “Look at the people who have won here,” said club historian Fred Waterman. “Francis Ouimet went on to win a pair of U.S. Amateurs. Lawson Little won two U.S. Amateurs and a U.S. Open. Julius Boros won three majors. Curtis Strange won two U.S. Opens and Jay Sigel won five USGA championships. The best courses find the best players.” It’s a formula that keeps bringing the USGA back to Brookline.

In collaboration with the Town of Brookline and The Country Club, the USGA plans to conduct a sustainable championship that sets a new standard for reducing its carbon footprint throughout its operations, while making a lasting impact on Brookline’s parks and green spaces. Several initiatives will raise awareness of ways that everyone can assist in a more sustainable championship. Among those measures are: • Promoting efficient mass transit to and from the championship • Reducing use of diesel-powered generators • Using efficient or solar-powered lighting where possible • Diverting landfill waste by reducing paper and single-use plastic • Investing in community Renewable Energy programs • In addition, the USGA will collaborate with the Town of Brookline to: • Plant 122 trees (in homage to the 122nd U.S. Open) in Brookline’s Environmental Justice zones • Help to restore the Lost Pond Trail, a popular town green space that has suffered from erosion and overgrowth • Clean up the Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course Our 2022 U.S. Open sustainability approach aligns with our vision for a more welcoming, sustainable and thriving game for all.

ROSS’S RULES

By Jack Ross

Things to Watch at The U.S. Open The majors are about more than the competition on the course. They’re about achieving immortality in the game. They’re about history. And in the case of the U.S. Open, about facing what is perennially the toughest test in golf. For the first time since 1988, the U.S. Open returns to The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, one of the five founding clubs of the USGA. The players will encounter both a demanding test of golf as well as some ghosts from the past. The course is the site of Francis Ouimet’s historic feat in 1913, when the unknown 20-year-old caddie held off British icons Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an 18-hole playoff. As we approach the 122nd U.S. Open, here are some things to watch.

Augusta and Colin Morikawa at the PGA Championship -- they demonstrate the poise to capture major titles. The average age of the top 10 players in the World Golf Rankings is 28. In 2000, the average age was 33. There’s no reason to think that the pressure of competing for the U.S. Open trophy will stymie this youth movement. But don’t overlook some of the veterans, who have experience managing the tight fairways, thick rough, and lightning-fast greens that the USGA is sure to present. Dustin Johnson, now part of the old guard at age 37, is always a threat. Stalwart veterans like Justin Rose, Louis Oosthuizen, Paul Casey, Adam Scott, and Sergio Garcia always seem to lurk in the majors.

CAN SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER STAY IN THE ZONE?

A TIGER WOODS – PHIL MICKELSON PAIRING?

Even while winning the WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer invitational, and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, 25-year-old Scottie Scheffler remained under the radar screen for many golf fans. This all changed with his rise to the top position in the World Golf Rankings and his dominating performance at the Masters. After Cameron Smith narrowed Scheffler’s lead to one with birdies on the first two holes, Scheffler holed a remarkable pitch for birdie on the third hold and never looked back. There was no drama on the fabled back nine, which over the years has snared the Green Jacket from leaders like Greg Norman and Jordan Spieth. Scheffler was unflappable, showing maturity beyond his age. Scheffler’s peers would tell you not to bet against him at Brookline. “You get on these hot streaks, and you just ride them out because they, unfortunately, don’t last forever,” said Justin Thomas. “But he is doing it in the biggest tournaments. It’s really, really impressive to see someone that young handle a moment this big so easily.” If Scheffler stays in the zone, he will be tough to beat.

Senior ESPN writer Bob Harig recently published a must-read book (Tiger & Phil) about the fascinating and evolving rivalry between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Who wouldn’t want to see these two foes tee it up together at Brookline? Woods bravely endured four arduous rounds on hilly Augusta National while recovering from severe injuries. Mickelson, meanwhile, receded to the shadows in the controversy surrounding his role in the new Saudi

THE BRASH YOUTH VERSUS THE WILY VETERANS Professional golf increasingly is dominated by youthful wunderkinds. Players burst onto the tour in their early twenties and win. And – like Jordan Spieth and Scheffler 14

LIV Golf league but has not abandoned hopes of winning the one major that has eluded him and completing the career grand slam. He has six second-place finishes in the U.S. Open. Both Woods and Mickelson registered to play at Brookline in April but their final decisions on playing were pending. If they show up, the USGA has the making of a marquee pairing.

The U.S. Open returns to The Country Club where another chapter in golf history will be written in Brookline.

PIVOTAL HOLES The short par-3 11th hole – which proved pivotal in Ouimet’s victory – will be part of the Open layout for the first time since 1913. The 131-yard downhill hole will require a precise wedge shot to a green defended by four bunkers and a fronting brook. Jeff Hall, USGA managing director of Rules and Open Championships predicts that “there will some guys walking to the 12th tee having just marked a ‘4’ on their cards and

131-yard par 3 11th hole

wondering what happened.” The 14th hole, which played as a 450-yard par-4 in 1988, has been transformed into a 619-yard par-5. Players who miss the fairway may be forced to lay up, leaving a blind, uphill shot of 160-165 yards. Something novel – a par-5 that plays like one.

THE GOLF Pete Dye left his design mark on the golf world and no more beautifully than with his 63 holes at Casa de Campo. The most famous Teeth of the Dog is “Pebblesque plus” with its Heaven seven ocean holes and beautiful weather year-round. So named because the laborers said sharp rocks bit like a dog when they relocated them along the shore, the course conversely kisses the Caribbean. Adjacent is The Links’ 18 with a couple holes also glimpsing the ocean, and speedy greens with false fronts and subtle slopes. Dye Fore has three nines - The Lakes, The Chavon running dramatically along the cliffs above the Chavon River and The Marina winding above the harbor into which the river flows with spectacular sea views. AND MORE Drive the cart to Playa Minitas, the private, creamy sand beach and pool area with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, and cabana boys. Relax or partake in water action as snorkelers swim alongside waders and

floaters, kayakers, and paddle boarders. A light breeze pushes a catamaran through the break in the sea rocks that form a natural enclosure. Optional motorized excursions transport to sea fishing or Catalina Island and the concierge arranges offsite zipline or cigar factory tours. Onsite, the impressive Polo and Equestrian Center is home to 200 well-tended and well-trained horses which are given 3-month vacations. Polo is an elegant sport to watch, and amateurs may try a donkey polo version. Cowboy Margarito gave a riding tour of the ranch including Mark Anthony’s home and horses before galloping across the polo field and back to the coral. At the Shooting Range, Director Jake Pike from England is committed to safe and fun experiences where Sandy guided us through rounds of skeet pulls with shotguns. Play tennis or walk, shop and swoon over the yachts at the Marina.

OUR TAKEAWAY Some trips might invoke, “been there, done that,” but Casa de Campo makes you long to return or even become a resident. We loved riding through the many areas in our cart, admiring homes, sampling so many

activities, and meeting friendly people from France, England, and all over the Americas. Love abounds as evidenced by numerous weddings in gorgeous settings and the food and golf really are to “Dye” for.

THE JOURNEY Arrive by yacht if you can. Otherwise, La Romana airport is five minutes from Casa

Golf Where the Baja Desert Meets the Pacific Ocean

Cabo San Lucas Country Club

In 1992

Jack Nicklaus arrived in Cabo and designed the first Nicklaus golf course in Latin America, Palmilla. Since then, Jack has designed 6 additional courses. Cabo is home to Dye Course, as well as Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Weskopt, Arthur Hills, Greg Norman, Davis Love, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. It is virtually a “Hall of Fame of Golf Course Designs” by the very best. The only place in the world where you find such a collection of truly amazing golf experiences.

Tiger Woods Design at Diamante

As late as the 1970s, Los Cabos was little more than a collection of quaint fishing villages. Today, it’s an international hot spot dotted with luxurious oceanfront hotels, bustling restaurants and bars, natural and cultural attractions galore, and golf courses that make superb use of their stunning settings. Spend a day in Cabo and you’ll understand immediately why the area is regarded as one of Mexico’s national treasures; spend a week there and you may never want to leave. The golf in Los Cabos is a lot like what you’ll find in the America,s southwest. It’s target golf on ribbons of emerald green turf with stunning ocean views from every course.

From the minute you land at Los Cabos International Airport, you’ll know you’re in for a special experience. Within steps of the Arrivals Hall, Los Cabos welcomes you with a plethora of lively, open-air bars. Stopping for an ice-cold cerveza or margarita before you head to your hotel is practically mandatory. In route to your hotel, you’ll quickly get a feel for what makes this area so special. The red sandstone mountains. The cactus-laden desert crisscrossed by dry arroyos, and ultimately, the sparkling sea. The Arch of Cabo San Lucas

In addition to golf, Los Cabos offers a myriad of other ways to have fun in the sun. You can go sportfishing for marlin, tuna, and other trophy catches just minutes from shore. Take boating excursions to see The Arch or go whalewatching; snorkeling in the clear, blue waters is also popular. At the moment, Los Cabos is one of the few international golf destinations that Americans can visit. It’s easy to get there via many major airlines, and the hotels and other tourism providers have taken every precaution to help ensure a safe visit. In fact, many of the destinations hotels and resorts are participating in a new health security protocol, “Sharecare Verified” by Forbes Travel Guide, that’s supported by leading travel agency brands such as Distincte Travel Group.

Sean Winton, Founder and President of Distincte Travel Group, a lifestyle travel company that specializes in golf experiences www.distincte.com believes Cabo is now one of the hottest golf travel destinations and will be for years to come. “Golf pilgrimages to the famed links courses of Scotland and Ireland are presently oversold,” Winton said, “at least until early 2023. Simply put, there’s just very little available inventory this year. Golfers will need a place to go—a destination that’s not only open but matches the high standards desired for a proper golf experience. We’re advising clients to swap out whisky for tequila, and to go where the desert meets the mighty Pacific – Los Cabos. People who haven’t traveled there will be astounded at how good it is. 10 Great Courses You Can Play in Massachusetts & Rhode Island

Granite Links Golf Course

THE STATES OF MASSACHUSETTS AND RHODE ISLAND have great golf history dating back to the late 1800s. These two relatively small states have over 400 golf facilities of which 75% are open to public play. The region is blessed with public access golf courses designed by the very best golf course architects in the history of the game. Donald Ross, Geoffrey Cornish, Jack Nicklaus, A.W. Tillinghast and a host of other great golf course architects designed numerous courses in the region. From seaside to parkland designs there is an endless list of public golf facilities that are each unique and great to play. Southern New England Golf has an amazing variety of public access golf courses in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Over 20,000 years ago the Laurentide Glacier reseeded carving the shorelines in Massachusetts and Rhode Island creating dramatic landscapes that make the region a perfect pallet for amazing golf course designs. The sea level shorelines are perfect for links-style courses and moving from the coast, the changes in elevations with glacial outcroppings create completely different design elements. Even at the prestigious Country Club in Brookline Massachusetts where this year’s U.S. Open will be held, there are outcroppings throughout the golf course that designer Willie Campbell had to work around in 1895.

Newport National

Golf in the Northeast offers some of the most dramatic course designs found anywhere in the world. The Masters kicks off the golf season in the Northeast every year. Playing conditions in the early season can be less than perfect, especially along the coast with ocean temperatures still a bit cool. In no special order, you will find a list of some of our favorite public access courses throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Get out and play, and enjoy some of these truly amazing courses. INDOOR GOLF CLARITY GOLF

The Critical Components of a Simulator Part Two: The Software BY BILL BALES In Part 2 we look at the “heart” of golf sims, the software. Many of the name brand sim companies have their own proprietary software. Also, there “Some software are a handful of providers offer providers that license a free demo, you their software to can download and producers of launch try” tracking hardware. Here is a quick look at the five primary components of simulator software: E6 CONNECT Simulator

The interface The interface includes info like course name, hole, shot number, player up, lie, and wind. When you hit the shot it renders a virtual ball that picks up the real ball when it hits the screen, and then flies through the air and does what golf shots do. Then it might show results such as how far the shot went, where the ball ended up, how far from the hole, and shot data.

The Content This includes the courses, practice facilities, sounds, flybys, and commentary. It relates to the accuracy of the course reproduction, the variety and look of the practice facilities, and tools related to learning and club fitting.

The Functionality This is stuff like competition options, data collection, scoring and betting games, the ability to adjust conditions, managing player names and information. 28

JU N E / J ULY 2 02 2 | N O RTHE AST.G OLF

The Graphics This relates to the fidelity of the 3D graphics and stuff that moves such as flags, birds, and trees.

The Trajectory Physics These are the algorithms that process the launch data delivered by the launch monitor and determine what the ball is going to do in the air such as distance, height, and curve; and after it starts to hit stuff like the ground, trees, rocks, water, and Coke machines; all related to other factors like wind, temperature, and the nature and angle of what the ball collides with. Some software providers offer a free demo you can download and try on your PC. Or, you can usually find a system somewhere — an indoor center for instance — to try out the software and system you’re considering. Or, you could ask for screenshots and a

copy of the user manual to learn about the various features. Don’t hesitate to ask for a list of available courses, and to ask how the courses were produced–some are painstakingly produced and others are produced virally by individuals using a course builder available with some brands. Be sure to check out the practice facilities offered, and how you can store and utilize the data. Check out the options for managing players, how many can play in a group, the scoring and betting games, and options to set conditions and tees/pins.

GAME IMPROVEMENT TODD CAMPBELL

Why Guess When You Can Measure the Ultimate Indoor/Outdoor Learning Center BY TODD CAMPBELL It started as a vision of building a wellrounded Academy that could analyze every part of your golf game with the most advanced technology available all under one roof. Every lesson starts with a discussion of the current state of the player’s game to get an understanding of where they are and where they would like to be. After having the student hit a dozen shots with a 7 iron and then a driver, we are able to get some baseline numbers from our TrackMan 4 Launch Monitor on the curvature, trajectory and overall efficiency of the shots. By showing the numbers from TrackMan, our students gain a better understanding of why the ball is reacting the way it does. From there, we challenge the student to change the numbers to achieve the ball flight characteristics they are searching for. We normally start with the basics of club path and face angle, and as they demonstrate control, we progress into angle of attack, dynamic loft and center face contact. Ultimately, the student will see more consistency with their ball striking, flight and distance while gaining confidence in their swing. In addition to TrackMan, we utilize a 4-camera video swing capture system from Swing Catalyst. The cameras film at 240 fps so the images are crystal clear (no shaft blur) and you are able to see the position of the clubface at virtually any point in the golf swing. The cameras are placed Face On, Rear Facing, Down the Line and Overhead so you will be able to see your entire golf swing in slow motion, frame by frame from any angle. We combine the TrackMan analysis along 30

PuttView transforms any putting green into an interactive learning environment.

with the video swing captures to have the student gain an understanding of how they arrived at their TrackMan numbers, and compare before and after videos to see how the swing has changed to arrive at the more efficient numbers. Your swing is shown on a large 55” Microsoft Surface Hub touchscreen monitor where we can utilize the software to add swing plane lines, setup lines, angle numbers, head circles, etc to help the student understand their motion patterns and how they affect the TrackMan numbers. We can measure your Pressure and Ground Force Reactions with our Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Force Plate. This technology will measure the amount of pressure in each foot at any given point in the swing which is extremely helpful for those students who have problems getting onto their lead side coming into impact. It will also measure the pressure trace from your trail foot to your lead foot which will affect your club path. Besides measuring the

pressure in each foot, we can also measure the 3 Ground Force Reactions (GFR’s) which are Horizontal force from the trail foot to the lead foot, the Rotational force between the 2 feet and the Vertical force from the lead foot. Depending upon how the player posts their body in the backswing, there will be an ideal combination of forces to arrive at the most powerful impact position possible. By measuring these forces, we can determine if the player is using the ground properly to get the most out of their swing. Rounding out our full swing technology, we offer 3D Motion Capture from GEARS Golf. When a student arrives for a GEARS lesson, there is a bit of prep that needs to be done. First, as the student warms up for the session, we will “build” their GEARS club by strategically placing markers on their 7 iron and then will calibrate the club to the 8 GEARS cameras located around the room. After the club is built, we then need to get the student

GAME IMPROVEMENT TODD CAMPBELL

marked up by placing them in the GEARS suit and calibrating them as well. Once everything is calibrated, we can have the student hit some shots. They will see a computer-generated avatar show up on the screen that we can now view from a 3D perspective. The advantage of using GEARS over video is that the 3D version is more accurate than filming on video in 2D. In addition, we use our GEARS program just like TrackMan where we can display numbers. These numbers are very useful in determining proper setup angles, the amount of body rotation and sway, and can even be used as a clubfitting tool to measure lie angles and shaft flex. We also have PGA Tour model swings that we can view which will help gain clarity as to how a better player is moving throughout the swing. For putting, we utilize our PuttView Putting green. The green has prebuilt slopes that have been calibrated with the computer software so the PuttView program knows every break in the green from any given location to the hole. The PuttView program will project images onto the green which include starting point alignments for foot and ball position, along with the ideal aim and break lines of the putt into the hole. Once we know the correct start line and the amount of break, we can then add in Sam PuttLab to measure and learn about your tendencies in your putting stroke. Recording a putting stroke on Sam PuttLab is similar to TrackMan where it will measure and display numbers in an easy-to-read format. Sam PuttLab also has a 3D version where you can watch an animated view of your putting stroke and understand what is truly going on with your stroke to affect the outcome of the putt. Lastly, we use PuttView as a teaching tool for AimPoint Express. As the only certified instructor of AimPoint in Rhode Island, I take pride in teaching correct fundamentals for AimPoint. A valuable feature of Puttview is its ability to

TrackMan Pro measures the full trajectory of any shot, from 6-foot pitches to 400-yard drives, pinpointing the landing position.

accurately project the amount of slope on our putting green, which is displayed in a % number. We use these numbers to help teach our students to correctly judge the amount of slope and how to use that information to calculate the correct amount of break. We also help the students develop the pre-shot

routine on our green so they get comfortable with the process. For more information on our Academy or to book a golf lesson appointment, please visit my website at www.toddcampbellgolf.com or email toddcampbell@pga.com NORTHE AS T.GOL F | JU N E / JU LY 2022

THE INVERTED FITNESS & GOLF DIFFERENCE Our FIT N’ HIT fitness for golf program combines strength, alignment, and fitness that will immediately “translate” and “transfer” to the golf swing. This immediate transfer from the fitness focus to the finesse of the swing is where we hope to see the improvement in speed, stability, shapes, and power. We focus on stretch equally to strength; this gives our students a more balanced and athletic approach to their overall golf-fit goals. We utilize many training aids to help with body balance, alignment and coordination that is used in the golf swing. Posture and alignment are needed to create any kind of power. From strictly a fitness perspective, when you understand alignment and focus on where power originates from, then reinforce these positions with drills; you will have great success in becoming far stronger and more confident in your abilities to perform. The name “Inverted Fitness & Golf” came from owner Amanda Cortellesso. Her diverse background in many areas of athletics brought her to the understanding that you need to “turn your mind and sometimes your body literally upside down (Inverted) to really allow yourself to reach a higher level”. Her background, which includes elite gymnast, professional aerialist, professional personal trainer, amateur golfer & continuing education for TPI golf-specific fitness training has all offered her many creative concepts and tools in training her athletes. “I am a tough coach, but compassionate as well, together we figure out what is lacking in your mobility, in your strength, and in your confidence. From there we create a program that allows for you to loosen up while strengthening up and it has been very rewarding to see such success from this approach.” Amanda Cortellesso

I went back to my military themed options. ... In the end, I ended up with these! For my custom pair, as a US Navy Veteran and active member of the Veteran Golfers Association (VGA), I wanted something that would give homage to my time in service but wanted to keep it somewhat subtle. I selected the Packards with a cream outsole then I had to choose my specific size and width (offer sizes 6.5 – 15 and Narrow to X-wide). Next up was the fun part; the color selection. The Packard offers 9 different base leathers to choose from – black, white, grey, cognac and navy – each with an English Pebble grain look. I kept it simple with the white pebble look. Next up was the Saddle; with 57….yes 57! Various styles you’ll be here for a while deciding what style you

wish to go with. I went with a grey and blue camo on both the saddle and accent section. Lastly, you have the option to choose 5 different color waxed laces. After playing around with some really bold options, I went back to my military themed options and went to the next stage; personalization. Each pair has the ability to allow you to personalize both the left and right shoe. Options either include a monogram or a logo. The logo options are endless…national flags, state outlines, golfers, shamrocks you name, they have it. I again, kept it simple with my initials on the right shoe and an anchor on the left … keeping with the Navy theme. In the end, I ended up with these!

PRO SHOP PUTTERS & WEDGES

Short Game Tools Putters & Wedges for the Season BY GREG SAMPSON

Why is the game of golf measured in strokes? It is my opinion that because we use our putter and wedges the most amount of times during a round. Therefore, each golfer needs a trusting relationship with their short game tools of the trade. Here are my current favorites: BETTINARDI | bettinardi.com The BB Series lineup features 303 Stainless Steel offering all golfers the same blend of metal as to what is preferred by Bettinardi Tour staffers around the globe. The BB Series is upgraded with our durable Graphite Gray PVD finish and classic black and white paint scheme. Choose from the BB1, BB1F, BB8W, or BB46.

BETTINARDI | bettinardi.com The new 757 features a compact shape, square face angle and neutral CG bias. The low CG design and Sole Slot produces a high launch and faster ball-speed. The are two ‘secrets’ about your wedges that no one in the club business will tell you. The first is that by designing their wedges with their paid tour staff professionals, the major brands are ignoring the wedge problems of everyday recreational golfers. The second big secret is that all these ‘tour design’ wedges are the least forgiving clubs in your bag. You have a big driver, a hybrid or two, and game improvement irons to help you with your ‘not-sogood’ shots, but robotic testing proves a mishit of only a half inch with your wedge can cause as much as 50 – 55 feet of distance loss. That’s why the Edison Forged wedges were designed by studying the impact patterns of thousands of recreational golfers’ wedges and optimizing performance around that data. So, they give you more penetrating trajectories, improved spin and the most forgiveness of any wedges made. Edison Forged Wedges have been proven to put your not-so-good wedge shots 31 feet closer to the hole. And they are backed by a 30-day Performance Guarantee.

It can be heard on every major audio platform including iHeart Radio, TuneIn Radio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, Spreaker, Amazon Alexa and more. Despite the enormity of Adams’ success, his mission remains basic. “I consider myself a storyteller,” says the 58-year-old New Englander, born in Hartford and raised in Rhode Island. “Domenic Scarano, my producer, is a critical piece in what we do, and I have the best staff in the world. The mission of Fairways of Life is to share my passion for the game of golf.” And share he does. In addition to his vast Fairways of Life empire, Adams has more than 30 years experience in the sport working in club operations and management. He is also an expert in golf equipment and technology having built and/or designed golf clubs for Nicklaus, MacGregor, Ram, and Wilson. The Providence College graduate is a golf historian and has interviewed up and comers and the glitterati of the game, hosting broadcasts from every Major Championship and multiple Ryder Cups. He talks about the current state of the golf, “I really believe that golf is at its height right now. The talent is deeper than ever. With the technology available, training, and improving college programs, players are coming to the PGA TOUR ready to compete and win.” Adams stresses the game’s outreach to heretofore underserved populations stating, “The game’s governing bodies are communicating more and embracing a larger demographic. There is a greater percentage of females coming to the game. It is important that we make people feel welcome. Retention of players and fans is essential.” One thing is for sure, both players and fans are enthused about the 2022 U.S. Open returning to The Country Club in Brookline, MA, June 16-19. Adams, who moved with his family from Rhode Island to Florida several years ago, shares their excitement. “We are coming home,” he says joyously. “We already have tickets to see Paul McCartney at Fenway Park in June 48

and are planning to broadcast from Brookline. “I’m really excited about it. The course is a big ballpark where the short game and ball striking from tee to green are crucial. “To me, Brookline is one of the high cathedrals of the game. It truly was the start of golf in America with Francis Ouimet winning the Open in 1913. From Curtis Strange winning the U.S. Open in 1988 to the 1999 Ryder Cup, Brookline is like great music or movies. It belongs to all of us who love golf everywhere around the world.” Adams certainly can speak from a worldwide viewpoint. He doesn’t just have a large footprint; he has the whole shoe store. Fairways of Life delivers headlines from golf’s professional tours, featuring interviews with

players and industry leaders. The show also explores the history of the game, golf architecture and travel, and includes interaction with golf fans. Despite this global reach, Adams’ approach to both writing and broadcasting remains decidedly intimate. He relates, “I don’t know if I’m a good writer,” says the man who has co-authored several books in the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series. “But if I am, it’s because I stopped trying to be a good writer. “I just want to talk to Matt Adams people about the game I love, to let it be what it is, not what it is supposed to be. I write constantly, getting phrases in my mind and keeping notes. I don’t look at it as broadcasting to 100 million people, I always see it as having a conversation about golf with one person.” Adams has a lot of irons in the fire, but his golf irons remain largely in the bag. He now broadcasts live coverage of the PGA TOUR with PGA Live on ESPN+. This, along with his other commitments, leaves little time for play. He explains, “I hardly ever play golf anymore, but I am the eternal optimist, and I plan to make time to get out there more.” He has a few other items on his bucket list as well. “One of my goals is to use technology to grow the Fairways of Life brand. “I’ve always been interested in documentary film type of content. There is so much history and so many stories to tell about the game, players, and courses. I want to keep our worldwide golf focus, share interviews with people in our game, and continue to take our viewers and listeners wherever they want to go.”

ON THE RANGE COURSE MANAGEMENT

Be Your Own Tour Caddie BY ED TRAVIS WHEN THE U.S. OPEN is played at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, we will have the opportunity to enjoy worldclass golf and root for our favorites plus the chance to see professionals helping the professionals. That is, professional caddies aiding the players over the already difficult golf course that has been set up by the United States Golf Association to test the best players in the game. There’s a lot we can learn from how a professional caddie does his job that can be applied to our own game, and insights that recreational players can use to improve. Not swing tips, but the way two professionals, caddie and player, form a team with the caddie an integral member of the partnership. In setting the stage for being your own tour caddie, it is good to remember a quotation from Bobby Jones, “Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-halfinch course.. the space between your ears.” So, though we are heading to the course this weekend for the weekly skins game and not the last two days of the U.S. Open, the ways tour caddies manage a round are exactly suited to our needs. A tour caddie knows his player’s strengths and weaknesses and you should evaluate yours. If you usually hit fades, don’t try to hit a hook around that tree in front of you but consider a pitch out or full shot that ends up short and right of the ideal target. Your score NORTHE AS T.GOL F | JU N E / JU LY 2022

ON THE RANGE COURSE MANAGEMENT

may suffer by a shot but more likely you wouldn’t be able to hit that tree-hugging hook much less get the ball on the green with the potential cost of multiple strokes. When contemplating a tee shot, sometimes going for the maximum distance is not the best plan. The tour caddie in you (I used to call mine “Looper”) should look at what drive will make the next shot easier or even the shot after that easier. A good example is a hole where the best angle to the green is from the right, but a hazard is within the driver’s distance on that side. The left side is open but with the potential of a harder approach, perhaps over a steep-faced bunker. Looper should look at the possibilities, the risk, and reward, then help you decide based on the knowledge of the shots you typically hit. Maybe a 3-wood from the tee down the right short of the hazard or a driver aimed into the left rough that fades back into the fairway. Not 52

JU N E / J U LY 2 02 2 | N O RTHE AST.G OLF

difficult to figure out but too often it’s not the way recreational players think. They just grab the driver on every par four and par five and swing away. Speaking of drivers and 3-woods, everyone knows the driver goes farther and is less accurate, right? Well, it’s not. Shot Scope analyzed thousands of shots by recreational players and though the driver averages about 30 yards longer than a 3-wood, it is just one percent less accurate in terms of fairway hits. Being a true professional, Looper will take such information into account for future shot decisions. A pro tour caddie, in addition to carrying a 40 lb. bag for 18 holes and keeping the clubs clean, also helps figure the distance for the next shot, the effect of any wind, and how the amount of uphill or downhill slope will add or subtract from the carry and roll. This isn’t as straightforward as it sounds and experience counts for a lot.

A critical thing Looper can do is to figure out the distance an approach shot should fly, i.e., where it should land, not where it will stop rolling on the green. Recreational players often don’t generate much backspin on iron shots so spinning the ball back as the pros do is probably something we can only dream about. Exact control and “sucking it back” comes from having lots of spin on the ball. However, if the ball you’re using has a hardcover such as Surlyn, which does not spin as much as the softer urethane cover ball touring pros use, then chances are you won’t be able to get sufficient spin to “suck it back” and if you are lucky, just enough backspin so the ball will stop within a reasonable distance on the green. The unfortunate fact is that many weekend players hit irons a little fat. It doesn’t take much to destroy any possibility of generating high backspin so the ball tends to roll out more on the green.

ON THE RANGE COURSE MANAGEMENT

Knowing all this Looper has figured out the yardage to the correct landing point allowing for some bounce and roll and that will give you the confidence to make the best swing you can. When figuring approach shots, an important tip is to not obsess over the wind, slope, lie, hazards, and all the other factors. Chances are, and experienced caddies know this, they all are less important than a clean square impact on the ball. Once you and Looper have done all the calculations and made your mind up on the club selection, he simply says, “You got the right club.” Now, all you have to do is hit it. Looper can be especially helpful when it comes to putting. Sure, figuring the line and break is important but he can also remind us to not pay too much attention to the

mechanics. The practice green is the place to figure out “how” not during the round. A pre-shot routine that minutely grinds out the stance and the grip and the weight balance and head position and…well you get the idea, simply creates tension, uncertainty, and often poor results. The old idea of picking out the line and then a spot to roll the ball over is still applicable. You and Looper can jointly determine the line and proper speed, but truly good putters work at having the same approach as a young kid who, not knowing any better, just steps up and knocks the ball in the hole. Another way professional tour caddies help their players is with the mental and emotional side by helping them focus while preparing to hit a shot and then shifting

their attention from walking between shots to something else. It’s almost as though Looper can get your mind to switch on and off to relieve the tension rising from continuously concentrating on this game, which we will never conquer. This is really important when you have hit a truly horrible shot, maybe out of bounds or into the water or even bladed the ball over the green. Looper, the tour caddie in you, can step up with something simple but useful like, “OK, let that shot go there’s nothing we can do about it.” This helps us focus on the next shot; the only one that counts right now. Being your own tour caddie isn’t easy, but it is something we all can do. Being our own friend on the course to make the round as much fun as possible is a big help, and who knows you might even enjoy the challenge.

QUECHEE CLUB EXPANDING OFFERINGS SPECTACULAR VERMONT RESORT COMMUNITY PLANS The Quechee Club in Hartford, Vermont, recently announced the adoption of its campus-wide master plan to enhance the club’s lifestyle offerings for its member community, marking the beginning of the largest project in the Club’s 52-year history. The overwhelming approval of the proposed first phase of the renovation plan transforms the four-season residential community’s position to provide a variety of outdoor recreational pursuits, premier amenities, and an inviting social atmosphere, all centered around the enjoyment of the club’s Upper Valley Vermont location. The reworked and carefully articulated current version of the plan reflects the diverse interests and priorities of the present-day and future membership with proposed investment in various amenity areas. “Last summer’s utilization of our programs and amenities 54

JU N E / J U LY 2 02 2 | N O RTHE AST.G OLF

broke records in every area. And this fall and winter followed suit,” said Brian Kelley, CCM, PGA, general manager of Quechee Club. “The club’s demographics and desires of the membership are changing. This plan was the result of listening to our membership, bringing many stakeholders into the planning, and now, with the approval from membership, we have set the Club on a trajectory for a bright future.”

The first of two phases feature’s a new racquet sports complex, which includes the addition of four new pickleball courts, renovation of two hard tennis courts, as well as the relocation of the platform tennis facility with the addition of two new courts. The club’s master plan includes an expansion of the Recreation Camp Barn, adding a second floor, and more amenities. The 52-acre recreation lake amenity, Lake Pinneo, will also be improved with new shower and locker room facilities and snack bar service. The last component of the initial phase includes the construction of three new buildings: cart barn, multi-use ski and golf building and storage, and designated employee housing. The current gas-powered cart fleet will be converted to electric-powered carts. The Club-owned family ski mountain will be supported by combining two current buildings into a newly constructed facility to house ski patrol, ticket sales, ski team program and driving range staff in golf season, as well as new equipment storage facilities and restrooms for skiers and golfers. “We share many amenities at the Quechee Club, and since we are not a single- or even dual-focus club, we keep a broad view of both our present and our future, creating spaces and opportunities for all ages and interests,” remarked Kathy Hickey, current president of Quechee Club’s Board of Trustees. “Phase one addresses the interests and needs of our ever-expanding member demographic; our amenities enjoy strong support but need attention to keep up with the times. It is a well-considered step forward. Whether our community keeps Quechee as a guarded secret or shares their good fortune with friends and multiple generations, the improvements in phase one of the Campus Master Plan will move us toward even greater and more memorable experiences.” Located in the town of Hartford set against Vermont’s Green Mountains, Quechee Club is a four-season lifestyle community, offering access to a spectrum of recreational activities throughout the year. The 6,000-acre residential area was established in 1970 and is stewarded by Quechee Lakes Landowners Association. Home to more than 1400 residents, the Upper Valley destination is known for its quiet countryside setting, environmental landscape, and all-season recreational lifestyle. Member residents, their families and guests, enjoy access to 36 holes of championship golf, racquet sports, indoor and outdoor aquatics, fitness facilities, hiking, kayaking, as well as family programming and events For more information, visit quecheeclub.com. RESORT STYLE LIVING SOUTH CAROLINA

Southern Charm South Carolina’s golf communities prove to be some of the best BY NEG STAFF

The Cliffs

SOUTH CAROLINA is located in the Southeastern United States and is bordered by North Carolina to the north, by Georgia across the Savannah River to the south and west and by the Atlantic Ocean to the east. South Carolina has several major lakes covering more than 683 square miles. Lake Keowee, which hosts several golf communities and lakefront communities, is the state’s fifth largest at more than 18,000 acres. Lake Marion is the largest at 110,000 acres and is also a location for golf communities. If you are looking at a top choice outside of Florida, South Carolina may be perfect.

WARM SUMMERS / MILD WINTERS South Carolina has a humid subtropical climate, although high-elevation areas in the upstate area are cooler. In summer South Carolina is hot and humid, with daytime

temperatures averaging between 86 – 93 °F in most of the state. Overnight lows average 70 – 75 °F on the coast and from 66 – 73 °F inland. Coastal areas of the state have very mild winters, with high temperatures averaging around 60 °F with overnight lows in the 40s °F. For this reason, you will find many highly regarded, world-class South Carolina golf communities located there.

GREAT TAX BENEFITS South Carolina has one of the lowest per capita tax rates in the country, according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census. That fact has put the Palmetto State in, or close to, Kiplinger’s rankings of the Top 10 Best States for retirees on a regular basis. South Carolina’s income tax structure follows federal income tax laws, allowing many of the same adjustments, exemptions and

deductions with only a few modifications. In fact, the starting point for calculating one’s state tax liability is one’s federal taxable income. South Carolina does not tax Social Security benefits or railroad retirement income. South Carolina also allows special exemptions for retirees and senior adults in homestead and other tax areas. South Carolina is a bit more convenient to the Northeast for those wishing to snowbird to a second home compared to South Florida locations. In many regions of the state price points are also more attractive than more southern locations. With so many middle-aged consumers wanting to buy now before retirement, value, location, and availability have made South Carolina a great choice. And as far as golf is concerned, the state is home to some of the most spectacular golf courses in the country, with NORTHE AS T.GOL F | JU N E / JU LY 2022
