The Home of American Golf

Calling these “the best of times” around the Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen area of North Carolina might seem like it’s saying a lot, but sometimes the shoe simply fits. Just take a look at everything that is currently happening around the Home of American Golf.

Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club recently celebrated its fourth U.S. Women’s Open and enjoyed rousing success, crowning another worthy champion in world No. 4-ranked Minjee Lee. The Australian joined her mentor, 2001 champion Karrie Webb, along with Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam and Cristie Kerr on the Pine Needles Wall of Champions.

Soon after the final putt dropped at Pine Needles, thoughts turned to the area’s next national championship, the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. It will be one of five U.S. Open Championships in the area by 2047. Oh, by the way, the USGA staged its inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open in July at Pinehurst No. 6 and the event will return next year as well.

All of which is part of the USGA’s historic move to establish its second home in Pinehurst. In an effort to expand its impact in golf and extend its mission to champion and advance the game, the USGA is in the midst of constructing “Golf House Pinehurst,” a six-acre campus that will be completed by the end of 2023

and will include a new equipment-testing facility, innovation hub, museum and visitor center, and offices housing 50 full-time USGA staff members.

The USGA Experience will present an immersive view of golf and the USGA’s work to unify, showcase, govern and advance the game. The Science of Golf and Championship galleries will feature interactive multimedia displays that incorporate augmented reality, interactive touch screens, sculptures and trophies. The USGA Golf Museum Special Exhibitions will uncover the organization’s deep collection of golf artifacts – the most comprehensive collection in the world.

The USGA’s Research and Test Center will be the only one of its kind in North America solely dedicated to testing golf balls and clubs for conformance to the Rules of Golf. At the USGA Shop, golfers will be able to purchase various products with the USGA championship logo of their choice as well as exhibit-related specialty items.

The USGA is also partnering with Pinehurst Resort to construct an outdoor testing pavilion and STEM education space near the resort’s main practice facility, including a mechanical golfer and ball launcher to demonstrate and evaluate golf ball aerodynamics.

No Resting on Laurels
Around

Then came the even-more-recent July news that the World Golf Hall of Fame will relocate its physical presence on display from St. Augustine, Florida, to Pinehurst. Building on their longstanding partnership and shared passion to elevate the stories of golf’s legends, the USGA and the World Golf Hall of Fame will create a new visitor experience at the Golf House Pinehurst campus, opening in 2024.

Additionally, World Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held in Pinehurst in 2024 and 2029, to coincide with the 124th U.S. Open on Pinehurst No. 2 (2024), and the return of back-to-back U.S. Women’s Open Presented by ProMedica and U.S. Open Championships, also on Course No. 2 (2029).

Many of the most cherished items in the Hall of Fame’s existing collection will be relocated to Pinehurst for the creation of a new Hall of Fame locker room, which will come to life on the second floor of the USGA Experience building. The result will be a seamless visitor journey from the USGA Experience galleries on the first floor to the second, showcasing the incredible talents of golf’s many contributors and their lasting impact on the game.

Meanwhile, in other golf news around the Sandhills, the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Championship will be contested at The Country Club of North Carolina’s Dogwood Course. CCNC

HomeofGolf.com

has a long history of hosting elite golf championships, including the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Girls and Boys Junior Championships, Southern Amateur and North Carolina Amateur.

For fans of the latest in golf technology, Talamore Resort has recently debuted its Toptracer Range. Talamore guests can experience interactive golf entertainment with the transformation of the Talamore’s driving range into a facility powered by Toptracer Range technology. In addition, the entire Talamore practice range has been upgraded and a new, 15,000-squarefoot putting course is being installed between the driving range and the 10th tee boxes that is expected to open in early fall.

In other scuttlebutt, the group that owns Pines Needles, Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club and that recently renovated Southern Pines Golf Club are reportedly planning to build a similar type of large practice putting green, as well as a handful of new cottages at Southern Pines GC.

Pinehurst Resort has reportedly been planning to announce Pinehurst No. 10 at some point soon, while a new distillery and a new hotel are also on the drawing board for the area.

The best of times in the Home of American Golf? That time is now.

Golf Travel on The Turn

As a new golf year begins, we all take stock of our game, our goals and review the year passed and the year ahead. It is a time for reflection and a time for staging and planning what is next in our golf life. For many of us, this is a time to take our game on the road and travel to warmer and greener fairways. A winter golf trip offers a great opportunity to extend our annual season to new and exciting destinations. Florida is the most popular because of the vast number of resorts, courses, great travel packages and reliable golf weather. The Bahamas, the Caribbean and the hottest new international destination, Los Cabos in Mexico, are becoming very popular because of the dramatic oceanfront course designs by the very best in the game and the desire for something new. The last three years have left us all with one simple reality: Take that amazing golf adventure now, who knows what tomorrow will bring.

The PGA Show in Orlando in the last week of January showcased a new era in innovation, design and style for 2023. This year’s show was one of the best in years. In just a few weeks, Northeast Golf will once again host one of the largest consumer golf shows in the country at Patriot Place/ Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on March 17th – 19th. This year, Northeast Golf Show offers

golfers a preview of top golf travel destinations and resorts, the latest in 2023 club designs, indoor golf simulators, and there will also be golf contests to test your skills on St Patrick’s Day Weekend.

This is our Season Launch Issue of Northeast Golf and as always, it will include great travel reviews, gear, apparel and a host of great editorials from our writers who cover everything that surrounds the game. As always, we strive to be the very best and bring our readers the very best in content and coverage.

Cabos, Solmar Golf Links, Cabo San Lucas, Cabo Del Sol, Vidanta, and Club Campestre are all open to public play.

It is no secret that once you come to Los Cabos, you will be back! Seven out of ten visitors are repeat guests, and 90% of first-time visitors say they would return. With direct flight access from 26 major cities in the U.S. and Canada, Los Cabos continues to sustain an impressive wave of growth to cement its position as the crown jewel of all destinations in Mexico. What is incredible about Los Cabos, is the commitment they have made to protect this beautiful destination in preserving the environment and natural terrain for future generations. El Arco is the most famous of Cabo’s natural wonders, it is the granite rock formation known as the Arch of Cabo San Lucas. Los Cabos is one of the most incredible marine ecosystems in the world. Where the Pacific joins the Sea of Cortez is the home of numerous whale species and some of the most beautiful coral reefs for diving. Whale tours and swimming with the whale sharks run from October to April and are one of the most incredible experiences you can have. Los Cabos is indeed so much more than just a golf destination. Los Cabos is an eclectic international destination with a vast array of things to do and places to explore.

In August of 2022, Las Cabos Tourism announced a new partnership with Forbes Travel Guide, the global authority on hospitality excellence, to enhance the visitor experience

throughout Los Cabos. The partnership includes comprehensive service training and health security verification to ensure high standards are maintained across all member hotels, restaurants, tour and event providers. “Tourism is the heartbeat of Los Cabos, and the safety and health of our visitors and community have always been our top priority. This partnership with Forbes Travel Guide, made possible through our Los Cabos private trust (FIPROTUR), reinforces our commitment to the highest standards of service and the confidence tourists have about Los Cabos. It also strengthens the hospitality industry by providing additional resources for our partners,” said Rodrigo Esponda, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

There are a host of amazing golf facilities, designed by the best of the best in the game today. Greg Norman’s Solmar Golf Links Golf Course has only been open for a few years but already has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the “Top 3 Golf Courses” in Mexico. Along the southern coast, Quivira, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is ranked among the

“World’s Greatest New Courses” and has magnificent ocean-side practice facilities. Diamante’s El Cardonal, featuring an “Old California” design motif, marked the architectural debut of Tiger Woods when it opened in 2014. Defined by flashed-faced bunkers, this intriguing layout transitions from sand dunes to rolling foothills edged by desert vegetation and winding arroyos. With its wide fairways and open-entry greens, El Cardonal was designed to appeal to golfers at all skill levels.

The Dunes Course, ranked among the world’s top 100 courses by both Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine, is a splendid Davis Love III design carved into vast white sand hills set back from the ocean. This breezy, lay-of-the-land links is known for its large undulating greens skirts, enormous dunes, and blowout bunkers on its journey to and from the sea.

Golf course living is in high demand in Los Cabos, and one the finest communities is Querencia, a private 1,800-acre golf community set in furrowed desert foothills high above

the Sea of Cortez. Querencia (loosely translated as “sanctuary”) is one of Mexico’s finest private clubs. Known for its speedy, multi-tiered greens, this well-groomed course takes players on a roller-coaster ride across hills and bluffs. Several holes tiptoe along the edges of deep canyons and twisting arroyos. Designer Tom Fazio’s aesthetic touch is evident at Querencia, with palm trees and lush vegetation artfully blended with the native desert border. Broad contoured fairways and harmonious transitions from green to tee mark this challenging yet playable course. Golf Digest has chosen three Cabo golf facilities in their list of “Top 100 in the World” this year: Diamante, Querencia and Quivira.

The Final Word: Incredible destination, amazing golf & beach weather, spectacular restaurants, warm friendly people, so much to do and see, and some of the best golf courses in the world. Los Cabos – Take me there!

To Rome’s Ryder Cup

AND MORE OF ITALY

DESTINATIONS ITALY
Lake Como

ASK ANYONE what country they wish to visit, and Italy tops many lists for the scenery, architecture, history, romance, food, wine, and golf. Last October, Rome hosted the IGTM (International Golf Travel Market) and this year, they will host the Ryder Cup at the charming Marco Simone Course, 15km from Rome’s city center. Built on a hillside with ample space for cheering fans, the course overlooks an olive grove with rustic and modern architecture. It is not long by PGA standards, but distances must be adjusted due to severe false fronts and side sloping greens. The rough will be increased and fairways narrowed in defense of today’s power players. Telecasts’ wildlife stars will be muskrats and jumping fish in the pond along the sixth tee box. The clubhouse is already stocked with Ryder Cup merch and golf carts marked with USA and Europe are poised for photo ops. Grand Hotel Duca d’Este down the road still has availability during the Ryder Cup or stay in the heart of Rome and step into the cobblestone night life with cafes, shops, and the Trevi fountain, lit like a movie scene to ignite romance. Visit the Spanish Steps and Vatican City. Passing over the apostles’

tombs, taking in the sculptures, murals, and mosaics is an enlightening experience, Catholic or not. Standing at the Forum and Coliseum where gladiators entertained Romans to their death is stunning. Rome has plenty more golf courses to play as well.

EXPLORING BEYOND ROME: Tuscany

Just north of Rome, is a promontory with an exceptional retreat, the Argentario Golf and Wellness Resort. Ultra-modern ebony and ivory decor of the main resort accentuates the circular open architecture. Beautiful bedrooms open to balconies looking out to the mountain and sea scenery shared by the PGA National Golf Course of Italy which hosted the Senior Italian Open. Choose from sea tours or wellness options and indulge in culinary magic.

Terme di Saturnia’s course plays below Tuscan rolling hills painted with olive groves, vineyards, and castles bordered with cypress spires. Golf is a bonus as the main draw is the thermal pools, originating at the resort alongside the restaurant and bar where most guests don their robes. The turquoise water is warm and soothing with bioplankton, an alga with healing

properties. Grab a noodle and float aimlessly, lounge, sauna and repeat. The extensive resort pool complex flows to the famous public cascades. Day trip to wineries or Florence, the photogenic art mecca or to Pisa, for more than a leaning tower.

Lake Como

Take the train to Como or a dare devil drive to Bellagio, an hour north of Milan. Ancient buildings border the steep, narrow road with a surprise view around every sharp blind curve. Hugging the wall is more than a metaphor. While several golf courses avail, the lake itself is the main draw. A day ticket to board several different vessels is a bargain for 14 euros. Hop on, hop off, between villages to stroll, dine and people watch. The architecture of hotels and homes as you sail across the shimmering clear water with snowcapped mountains above is astounding.

Venice

The Canal City has Marco Polo Airport for flight options. Vaporetto barges cruise the entire grand canal for a few euros while pricier romantic gondola rides glide through side canals. The maze of alleys and canals

lead to St. Mark’s Square, lit at night with overwhelming grandeur as little orchestras strike emotional chords. To play at Veneto Golf Course you are glamorously chauffeured on a polished wood, water taxi. The course was built in the 1930s when Henry Ford wanted to play on holidays in Venice, but Mussolini came into power before completion and secretly met Hitler on the course. The original links style is now parkland and while Ford never played there, many Americans enjoy it today.

Asiago

Situated on a high plateau at the base of the dolomites, 95 minutes from Venice, the highway ascent is very daring with ten “tornantes” or steep u turn curves on a narrow road with fast traffic. The valley miniaturizes below as paragliders soar above. Edoardo Molinari is an ambassador for Asiago Golf. The course is a gorgeous, hilly workout pushing the trolley through an Italian forest opening to a pasture where Asiago cheese making cows, chew grass with bells jingling on their necks. Meltar Boutique Hotel adjoins the club with lavish suites and Julieta balconies. Looming in the background downtown is a huge, antiquated arch that is the World War I memorial with 40k +soldiers interred.

Tips for Italy Trips

Accommodations — Book resort reservations in advance but don’t fear gaps in the itinerary. For easy to secure options, even on the fly check Airbnb and booking.com.

Packing — Go light with repeat, mix and match apparel. Ladies’ shoes are the most challenging but forfeit options for ease of travel

Puglia

Stretching along the southeast from the Adriatic to the Mediterranean Sea, Puglia is much less touristic. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Beale were married at Borgo Egnazia, beside the San Domenico Golf course – a challenging track along the Adriatic Sea. The DoubleTree by Hilton Acaya Golf Resort is more understated but elegant under the nightlights with spacious accommodations. The course designed by Dana Fry has hosted European Challenge Tour events. The clubhouse serves local flavors including ricotta cheese produced by

since most rooms, trains and autos have less than customary space.

Navigation — Diversify your transportation portfolio with a Eurocar rental, flights between cities or trains for a relaxing alternative. Take taxis in cities and best of all, boats on canals in Venice or Cinque Terra and the Amalfi Coast.

Gas stations — Pay inside with euros or make sure your credit

Italy has much more to offer such as Cinque Terra, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Capri, and medieval cities in between. One visit is never enough.

card waives international fees. Belly up to the bar which serves alcohol (not advised) or coffee. Gulp an expresso like a local, two sips there and go. Takeaways will be in tiny cups even when you request “Americano.”

Insurance — We never add car insurance in the states but were glad to have it in Italy and opted for medical insurance through Geo for peace of mind though fortunately unnecessary.

Restaurants — Many are closed between 2:30 and 7 so plan your meals accordingly. Breakfast is normally included with accommodations, but Warning: cream filled croissants may be habit forming.

Language — English is often understood but it’s nice to greet with buongiorno, request with per favore, and say grazie for thank you, departing with Arrivederci, Roma.

THE NEXT 50 YEARS

Though not a golfer, Walt Disney was the creator of the world’s leading family entertainment destination. He was a true visionary, and it didn’t take him long to realize that the sky was the limit for golf in Central Florida.

While developing the overall concept for what would become the Walt Disney World Resort, and shortly after acquiring the Florida property, Disney sketched a preliminary outlook for the future of the site — including his vision for EPCOT, an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. On the drawing -- just to the west of the property’s then-proposed central hub, and below spaces devoted to the eventual Magic Kingdom Park, resort hotels, convention facilities, and man-made lakes – Disney identified and labeled a large area designated for “golf”.

In 1971, Disney’s Magic Kingdom® first opened its gates, and ever since then, golf has played an integral role in creating the diverse atmosphere that comprises the Walt Disney World Resort guest experience.

A half century later, four unique courses, now operated by Arnold Palmer Golf Management (APGM), provide a golfer’s paradise. The layouts are challenging enough for the PGA TOUR’s greatest players, but also friendly enough to accommodate all skill levels at what has come to be known as “The Happiest Place on TURF!”

As Walt Disney World Golf ushers in the next 50 years, there’s tremendous excitement in store with the grand re-opening of Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course in 2023 while next December will mark the 50th anniversary of

the Jack Nicklaus legacy here - his third consecutive victory in what was then known as the Walt Disney World Golf Classic.

Walt Disney World Resort, meanwhile, will conclude its ongoing 50th anniversary festivities in March of 2023 when “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” draws to a close while, at the same time, the Walt Disney Company will begin to commemorate its centennial, so there is an abundance of reasons to celebrate Disney’s past, present, and future over the next 12 months and beyond!

While each of the championship-caliber courses receives accolades for design and playability, it is the year-round accessibility to all of the world-class amenities, service, and convenience that helps differentiate the Walt Disney World Resort from any other golfing destination.

The Family Experience

After more than four decades of hosting annual tournaments televised by ABC, ESPN, NBC and the Golf Channel, Walt Disney World’s focus has shifted to expanding golf’s reach and is now offering a superlative experience in stunningly beautiful surroundings for family vacations, industry gatherings and business seminars.

Given the diversity of the golf challenges and exceptional Walt Disney World Resort dining and entertainment options, it’s no wonder Golf Digest has ranked Walt Disney World Golf among its top five destinations for a family golf trip.

As part of Disney’s overarching mission to create the most magical experience possible, Walt Disney World Golf has overseen

an extensive redesign of Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course, which will be fully re-opened to the public in 2023. These changes involve a significant reimagination of all 18 greens and much of Magnolia’s closing stretch - holes 14 through 17.

While work continues on Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course, visitors at the Walt Disney World Resort have multiple world-class options to consider if they wish to play golf. Disney’s Palm and Lake Buena Vista Golf Courses are open for play, along with Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course, a nine-hole walking layout. Additionally, driving ranges are open to the public and there is the added attraction of FootGolf, a hybrid sport between soccer and golf, which has grown in popularity in recent years.

Disney goes out of its way to make vacations as convenient as possible with complimentary transportation to courses from select Walt Disney World Resort hotels and free parking for golfers on their way to courses. The resort experience is literally tailor-made for travelers. Golfers on the go can rent TaylorMade golf equipment (available for men and women in left- and right-handed sets) and Adidas golf shoes. Junior rental equipment is also available.

between 5,213 yards (red tees) and 6,870 yards (blue tees). The par-4 18th hole – which features a well-protected, elevated green – was always one of the most difficult on the PGA TOUR.

• Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course

Designed as a classic Tour style layout by Joe Lee, Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course is the longest of the Walt Disney World Resort courses, playing at 7,560 yards from the Classic tees during tournaments, 7,141 yards from green tees and 6,684 from the white tees for daily play. The course, which features magnolia trees along the fairways and elevated tees, is undergoing its most extensive redesign ever prior to reopening to the public. Holes 14 through 17 are being reconfigured and all 18 greens are being substantially enhanced.

• Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course

Designed in 1972 by Joe Lee, this course near Disney Springs winds through several of the resort properties, including Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa and Disney’s Old Key West Resort. The course, which plays between 5,177 and 6,745 yards, includes a par-3 seventh hole with an island green and a Mickey Mouse-inspired bunker that was added to the rear of the ninth green in 2018.

• Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course

A nine-hole walking course, Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course is well-suited for families and casual golfers. This course, originally only six holes and known as “The Wee Course”, was expanded in the 1990s by Ron Garl who designed the fifth, sixth and seventh holes to feature water hazards around a canal and pond. The par36 layout can be played from junior tees (1,713 yards) or close to 3,000 yards (including a 517-yard par-5) from the white tees.

The Walt Disney World Resort and Arnold Palmer Golf Management, which launched a 20-year strategic alliance more than a decade ago, are not resting on their laurels. Golf Inc. Magazine recognized the redesign of Disney’s Palm Golf Course in its 2015 “Renovation of the Year” awards and millions of dollars in course upgrades have already been made by APGM – with more to come – and these extend well beyond the fairways and greens.

A new fleet of premium Yamaha golf carts was recently introduced at Disney’s Palm, Magnolia and Lake Buena Vista Golf Courses. Each cart is equipped with a cutting-edge touchscreen Yamatrack GPS system to provide overviews of every hole, along with yardage from the cart to the flagstick. These carts boast plush, cushioned seats and a suspension system to provide a comfortable ride, USB ports to power mobile devices and Bluetooth speakers for the musically inclined to enjoy. Families can play and ride together as they interact with Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Pluto in Disney character-themed four-seater golf carts.

More state-of-the-art technology is available in the form of Robo-Caddies – a small, robotic golf cart that employs GPS and Bluetooth technology to transport your clubs and all of your additional gear safely around Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course. Golfers clip the cart’s small transmitter to their belt, load their golf bag, and focus on their next shot as the autonomous cart follows a few paces behind at a walking speed.

Walt Disney World Golf also features a fleet of SoloRider individual adaptive carts to help facilitate pace of play and keep mobility-impaired golfers in the game.

The Amazing French Lick Resort

NESTLED IN

THE

HOOSIER

NATIONAL

FOREST of southern Indiana, French Lick Resort has a long history and promising future. Once a French trading post, the valley attracted visitors for the mineral springs which left a residue of salt, licked by the deer and buffalo, hence the name French Lick. In 1845, French Lick Springs Hotel was first built as a modest two-story inn, inviting guests to “take the miracle waters.” Fast forward through the decades with several owners, and today French Lick Resort presents three hotels with 747 rooms and suites, fine and casual dining options, and room service. Guests can enjoy two fullservice spas, 24/7 gaming at French Lick Casino, six lanes of bowling at Pluto’s Alley,

horseback riding, shooting ranges and more activities, especially golf on two championship courses and one nine-hole layout.

French Lick Springs Hotel is stately with rocking chairs on the outer veranda, a spa with stained glass windows, pools, bowling alley and restaurants. 1875: The Steakhouse commemorates the first Kentucky Derby for an exquisite culinary experience.

West Baden Springs Hotel opened in 1902 and was hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” for its enormous atrium dome. From 5-9pm, musical acts by the atrium bar set the mood for a promenade around the perimeter to the spa, shops, and eateries. Bedroom balconies evoke a sense of

royalty overlooking the circular expanse below and the intricacies above.

Valley Tower is the newest hotel with modern décor complementing the first two, and access to all the French Lick Springs Hotel amenities. A rail trolley chugs passengers between the hotels while shuttles transport guests to golf courses and other attractions like French Lick Winery and 33 Brick Street restaurant, where hometown hero Larry Bird’s memorabilia is displayed. Scenic venues and high capacity make French Lick ideal for conferences, concerts, and events.

be one of the late Hall of Famer’s most diabolical designs and one of his most spectacular settings. It is visually stunning atop one of the highest points in Indiana with panoramic views extending 40 miles. On a bright sunny day, the geographical dimensions are extraordinary. Narrow fairways follow strips of ridgelines often leading to zero-edge greens, like infinity pools. The patio of the magnificent clubhouse serves libations and a striking view to review the memorable round.

The Donald Ross Course at French Lick was built in 1917 and has been restored to its original glory where the 1924 PGA Championship was held. Golf purists will enjoy the quality layout that is synonymous

with Donald Ross. No gimmicks, no frills, just pure golf at its finest. It plays fairer than the Pete Dye Course but with Ross’ signature false front greens.

French Lick’s Pete Dye and Donald Ross Courses have been placed #1 & #2 in Indiana for 12 straight years in Golfweek’s “Best You Can Play,” and top 100 nationally for 10 straight years in Golfweek’s “Best Resort Courses.” Check out the website to view course flyovers.

Valley Links Course is a short, walkable nine converted from the original 18 with Scottish fescue and the addition of church pew bunkering. It is a nice warmup for the more challenging 18s and the French Lick Golf Academy is comprehensive for honing skills.

Southern New England Resorts & Regions

MANY GOLFERS IN THE NORTHEAST

have never discovered the golfing treasures in their own back yard, but those who have are well aware of the great golf facilities in our region. The Southern New England states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut are blessed with some of the best golf courses in the world. Some say the true home of the game of golf in America is right here in the Northeast, where the first courses were built in the late 1800s. These three relatively small states have over 600 golf facilities of which 75% are open to public play. The region is blessed with some of the most prestigious private country clubs, resort courses and public courses

designed by the very best golf course architects in the game’s history including Donald Ross, Geoffrey Cornish, Jack Nicklaus, A.W. Tillinghast and a host of others. From seaside to parkland designs there is an endless list of golf facilities that are each unique in a relatively small geographical region.

Southern New England Golf has an amazing variety of golf courses in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Over 20,000 years ago the Laurentide Glacier reseeded carving the shorelines here creating dramatic landscapes that make the region a perfect pallet for amazing golf course designs. The sea-level shorelines are perfect

for links-style courses and moving from the coast, the changes in elevations with glacial outcroppings create completely different design elements. Even at the prestigious Country Club in Brookline Massachusetts where the 2022 U. S. Open was held, there are outcroppings throughout the golf course that designer Willie Campbell had to work around in 1895. Golf in the Northeast offers some of the most dramatic course designs found anywhere in the world.

Golfers in the Northeast are passionate and understand the roots of the game and its beginnings and traditions. The historical debate about whether the Scottish or the Dutch invented golf may go on forever, but

one simple truth about the game’s history is that golf in this country started right here. And in New England, golf seems to be as popular as it is in the British Isles and the “Home of Golf.”

Our Southern New England feature encompasses three relatively small states only about 13,000 square miles in size with over 600 golf courses. Florida, which is almost 55,000 square miles, 4-5 times larger, has just over 1000 courses. You cannot drive anywhere in Southern New England without running into a golf course. This leads us to our first region in Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS RESORTS

On Cape Cod alone, a tiny hook-shaped peninsula of 15 towns spanning 64 miles is home to 42 golf courses. There are more golf courses per square mile on the Cape than just about anywhere. On Martha’s Vineyard, there are five courses: Mink Meadows, Farm Neck, The Vineyard Club, Edgartown Golf Club and Chappaquiddick Links built in 1887, which is a short ferry ride from the Vineyard to Chappaquiddick Island. And on Nantucket Island, there are three: Sankaty Neck, Miacomet, and Sconset, built in1899. The 50 golf facilities in the Cape & Islands are on a total land mass of less than 500 square miles, which is totally amazing.

IT’S A GIMME ACE INDOOR GOLF

Right now, the hottest trend in golf may be golf simulators, particularly those used at home. Everyone is talking about getting one or how much fun golf is inside when the weather outside is too cold, too wet, or both.

The indoor simulator market is growing by leaps and bounds, as

was shown in a recent study by Straits Research.

“The golf simulator business is booming,” says Joe Neumeyer, founder and managing partner of Toledo, Ohio-based Ace Indoor Golf. “It was valued at $1.3 billion worldwide this past year and is expected to reach $3.3 billion by 2030. Both commercial

Custom Ace Simulator installation with retractable curtains & home theater seating

and residential installations saw significant growth in 2022.”

Ensuring you install the simulator that fits your needs and budget can be a daunting. Items like the enclosure, projectors, nets, matting, and screen have to be considered and installed correctly for everything to work properly.

There are two choices for establishing your indoor golf paradise: doing it yourself or having professionals design and install the whole package to your specifications. The integration of the disparate parts into one smoothly functioning whole is the key to success. We talked with Ace Indoor Golf, a leading golf simulator manufacturer and retailer, about the factors to consider when deciding between the two. The company sells, designs, installs, and provides maintenance of golf simulators to businesses, golf clubs, individuals, golf teams, sim manufacturers, and the most prominent golf retailers. The company offers turnkey custom-designed solutions and “Do-It-Yourself” (DIY), off-the-shelf packages that fit golfers’ needs at every price point.

The first factor to consider is knowing your room and layout. One component of the layout is the projector’s aspect ratio or the projected image’s ratio, height to width, and this is critical to giving the best resolution or image quality.

According to Neumeyer, “Aspect ratio is something that if you don’t know what you’re doing, you end up putting up a screen and buying a projector only to discover you have big black bars on the top and bottom and it just doesn’t look realistic. A lot of thought goes into whether your space is better for 4:3 or 16:10. Getting the right projector at the right throw distance to fill the screen can be challenging. Is your projector bright enough if you want to have your lights on while you’re playing or have some ambient light? There are numerous questions, and there’s no way you’re going to prepare for all of them, but a professional installer knows what to expect.”

Safety is the second consideration. Protecting you, your friends, and your house from errant shots, ricochets or balls that pass through or around the enclosure is critical. Enclosures need the proper screen, framing, curtains, side netting, pads, and baffles to eliminate potential injury for everyone around it.

Dr. Harry Brandt, an Ace Indoor Golf customer and the founder of the largest golf simulator Facebook group, commented, “Safety is a concern of mine. I see a lot of do-it-yourselfers’ sims and think, ‘Somebody’s going to get killed in that thing.’ They’re either going to take a rebound or some kid is going to get hit with a golf club. So there are some safety issues that

NORTHEAST.GOLF | FEBRUARY / MARCH 2023 41

people might not think of that are really important. But you get a guy like Joe and his team from Ace involved and they’ve done hundreds, if not thousands, of simulators and they know what mistakes to avoid, and they’ve figured out how to do it.”

The third and final consideration is ensuring you have an installation that works right out of the gate. Assess your abilities to put all the right simulator pieces together and to create a properly built enclosure. Ace Indoor Golf provides top-of-the-line components and experienced technicians that ensure the perfect formula for success. They know what works best in any given environment, what components complement one another, and how to adjust your space so everything works smoothly and safely.

Once you consider these things, you can decide what path works best for you. If a home simulator is on the agenda for this year, Ace Indoor Golf offers e-commerce purchases for DIYers with a free 30-minute consultation and a white glove custom design and installation service for those who want to hire a professional. Whether you’re in the market for a custom simulator package and enclosure or planning to do it yourself, a call to Ace is the first step in having an installation you will be pleased with for years to come.

Golf’s Past Remains Alive at Classic New England Courses

Golf in New England is thriving with numerous public and private courses, professional and amateur tournaments, and youth, high school, and collegiate golf programs, but the foundation for today’s success was laid decades ago.

So, while we await the inevitable return of spring, let’s nestle under the white blanket of winter to reflect on some of the oldest and most historic golf courses in the region - one from each of the six New England states.

Vermont Vintage

In 1886, a group of golfers in Dorset, VT created a 9-hole golf course. The Dorset Field Club would eventually become the oldest continuously operating golf club in America. Through five alterations, including expansion to an 18-hole course in 1999, the club continues to sponsor many events throughout the golf season covering all aspects of the game.

The Dorset Field Club is showcased at the USGA Museum in Far Hills, New Jersey and its clubhouse is believed to be the second oldest of its kind trailing only Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

According to the Dorset Field Club and the PGA, Dorset

came to life when Arvin Harrington, the club’s first president, established a 9-hole course. Over the decades, changes to the course have added length and additional holes.

Ironically, Dorset Field Club is now at the forefront of embracing tradition and technology with its AboutGolf Simulator and TrackMan 4 Launch Monitor.

Massachusetts Monument

No discussion about classic New England golf courses can be had without mentioning The Country Club in Brookline, MA. One of five charter members of the United States Golf Association (USGA), it has played host to 17 USGA national championships.

The Country Club is best known for the 1913 U.S. Open won by amateur and Brookline-native Francis Ouimet, but lest we forget the epic 1999 U.S. Ryder Cup victory and the 1902 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the club’s first national championship, won by Genevieve Hecker. While synonymous with golf, the property was originally a horse racetrack. Over time, hooves were replaced by hacks. Early alterations to the course were made in 1899,

1908, and 1927. More changes were made for the 1988 U.S. Open and a retro restoration was completed in 2019.

The Country Club has hosted four US Open Championships (1913, 1963, 1988, 2022) and remains a bucket list see for all duffers.

Rhode Island Royalty

Newport Country Club on Newport, RI was established in 1893 and would eventually be recognized as one of the top golf courses in the United States. Initial Chairman Theodore A. Havemeyer spearheaded a move to adopt the Rules of the St. Andrew’s Club in Scotland.

In 1894, Havemeyer was named the first-ever president of the newly formed USGA. Not coincidentally, one year later, Newport Country Club hosted the first USGA-sanctioned national championships.

According to course history, the start of the championships was delayed until the conclusion of the America’s Cup yacht race. The title was won by Charles Blair Macdonald by 12 and 11 strokes, still the most lopsided win in the Amateur.

In 2017, renowned golf architect Gil Hanse was hired to make some updates to the course. He eventually redesigned the five fairway bunkers, three on the 2nd hole and two on the 6th hole, and also restored the greens to their original size. Newport’s golf impact continues as it is slated to host the U.S. Senior Open in 2024.

New Hampshire Nobility

Hanover Country Club in Hanover, NH was closed in 2020 due to financial deficits, but its lasting memory lingers in Granite State golf lore. Orrin Smith designed the original 18-hole course in 1922. One of the defining characteristics of Hanover was its surrounding beauty.

Located in the heart of Dartmouth College, the course was created from the rolling hills of the Upper Connecticut River valley. Between the holes ran a local trail system, and back-toback par threes on 4 and 5 brought golfers to a bridge that crossed a ravine.

Hanover was fraught with numerous hills and valleys leading to a gorgeous classic clubhouse at 18. The singular

artistry of this historic course was characterized by long walks between holes, long shots to reach the fairways, and long lines of trees making for some challenging shots for aggressive golfers. The course is now used for cross-country running but the legacy of its golf past runs even deeper.

Maine Majesty

The eighth oldest golf club in the country finds its home in Bar Harbor, Maine. Kebo Valley Golf Club was established in 1888. Its challenging design has delighted and dejected many luminaries of golf and other avenues.

President William Howard Taft, U.S. Open Champion Scott Simpson, and PGA legend Billy Casper all played Kebo Valley. In 1911, President Taft carded a 27 on what was then the Elbow hole, the 17th, now aptly referred to as the Taft hole.

In 1922, Sir Walter Hagen, he of the 11 professional major championships, played two rounds at Kebo Valley, one of which was a then-course record 67. Located on Mount Desert Island and bordering Acadia National Park, Kebo is known for its challenging fairways and unpredictable wind currents and sun impact.

Environmentalists will thrill to the fact that the course helps to preserve hundreds of acres of land in their natural states. The venerable 18-hole course remains in play today.

Connecticut Classic

The beginnings of Fenwick Golf Course in Old Saybrook, CT date back to 1896. In 1900, the course was 2,550 yards long with 85 members paying annual dues of $10.00. The first

Fenwick Open was held that same year with heralded 1898 U.S. Amateur champion Findlay Douglas playing in the tournament.

While Fenwick would never host such a grandiose event again, players still flocked to the course to enjoy the large, square-cornered greens with longer grass. Hazards included actual sandy country roads and, believe it or not, cacti. Today, Fenwick Golf Course is defined by berms on the 2nd, 4th and 6th holes, small greens, wide hole corridors, and firm fairways. Course redesigns over the years reflect Maine’s British ancestry in playability, natural greens, and undulations.

Fenwick - and all of these classic New England courses - bring out the true legacy of golf, one that links players from different generations to a game that remains eternally beloved.

ROSS’S RULES

When Your Popularity Matters More Than Your Golf Game

The PGA Tour devised the Player Impact Program (PIP) to reward players who “generate the most positive interest in the PGA Tour.” In an age where media recognition translates into sports dollars, the PIP program is the gift that can keep giving, even if a player experiences a competitive slump. Or barely tees it up. Just ask Tiger Woods.

Recently, the Tour announced the results of the second year of the PIP. To no one’s surprise, Woods took home the top prize of $15 million, although he played (and did not contend) in only three events. In contrast, Scottie Scheffler, who won four times (including the Masters) and is the hands down favorite for Player of the Year honors, finished 7th on the PIP list and pocketed a mere $5.5 million. (To be eligible, the player must be a member of the Tour in good standing and have played at least five events in one of the past five seasons.)

But who would dispute that Woods continues to have a transformative impact on the game of golf, even as injuries have limited his ability to compete in recent years? When Woods does show up, ticket sales and television ratings surge. Like Arnold Palmer in the late 1950s, Woods’ advent on the Tour in the late 1990s propelled golf to new heights of popularity and vastly increased payouts for everyone. Max Homa probably echoed the sentiments of many players:

“Tiger won [the PIP] again, so as long as he’s winning, it’s not broken.”

The Tour doubled the total PIP payout to $100 million in 2022 for the top 20 finishers. Rory McIlroy received $12 million for second place. Rounding out the Top 10: Jordan Spieth ($9 million); Justin Thomas ($7.5 million); Jon Rahm ($6 million); Scottie Scheffler ($5.5 million); Xander Schauffele ($5 million); Matt Fitzpatrick ($5 million); Will Zalatoris ($5 million); and Tony Finau ($5 million). The lowest payment was $2 million.

How are the PIP standings determined? Not by an informal vote of Commissioner Jay Monahan and his trusted lieutenants over beers after a round of golf at Sawgrass. For

2022, money was awarded according to a five-factor formula based on objective, third-party data:

• Internet searches (how often a player’s name is searched on Google)

• Earned media (how many unique news articles contain a player’s name)

• Television exposure (cumulative TV exposure on Saturdays and Sundays)

• General awareness of players among the U.S. population (the “Q-Score”)

56 FEBRUARY / MARCH 2023 | NORTHEAST.GOLF
Mickelson and Woods

• Social media impact (score based on a player’s “reach, conversation and engagement”)

Although the PIP program might well have been in the works prior to 2021, it’s hard to imagine that the implementation of the program in 2021 -- and the vastly increased payout in 2022 -- was not influenced by the advent of LIV Golf and the Saudi bankrolling of mega guaranteed payments to lure players with significant media clout (e.g., Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson) away from the Tour.

While the Tour publicly takes the position that the depth of

competition in its established events is sufficient to prevent mass defections, surely funneling an additional $100 million to its top celebrities buys a little loyalty.

Philosophically, the PIP program runs counter to the Tour’s policy against paying appearance fees for participation in tournaments. (Bubba Watson recently suggested that the rule prohibiting appearance fees is not ironclad, but that’s another story.) While common in other parts of the golf world, appearance fees are officially taboo on the Tour, which has always viewed itself as a merit-based enterprise. The best players win the top dollars. In contrast, Homa described the PIP as “a popularity contest mixed with a little bit of golf.” Patrick Cantlay was more critical: “I think the money should be doled out according to play.”

The Tour has attempted to tie the PIP to participation in its newly designated premium events; 13 events this season will feature substantially elevated purses of $15-25 million. To be eligible for a PIP payout, a player may skip no more than one of these events. But Monahan recently conceded that Woods will not lose any PIP money regardless of how much he plays, so the rules here seem fluid.

The Tour has tweaked the PIP formula for 2023. The social media factor has been diluted. Perhaps this will lead to less colorful player Twitter traffic. Some players are confused by the formula. “I’m not smart enough to figure it out,” commented Rahm. “If you play good golf, it usually takes care of itself.” Unless you’re Tiger Woods, when NOT playing golf takes care of itself.

villages and towns and to the top-rated Northeast ski resorts with endless outdoor activities, making it one of the top tourist destinations in the East. The Owl’s Nest expansion and extensive ongoing development and growth have now made the facility the largest destination four-season resort in the Northeast.

Place to be in Every Season”

The extensive building and redevelopment projects continue each month, to add additional accommodations with new rental homes, hotel properties, and a host of new amenities and dining facilities. Owl’s Nest Resort recently celebrated the grand opening of its extensive racquet sports complex which includes eight red clay tennis courts, 13 pickleball courts, and four paddle tennis courts. The four paddle courts are heated for year-round use. The complex is just one of many additions to the resort since LCJ Management purchased the 18-hole course and over 600 acres of surrounding real estate in 2014.

The resort redevelopment which began two years ago includes a recently completed Lake Harold, the largest man-made recreational lake in NH. The newly completed Lakehouse can host events for up to 500 and is equipped with a full-size catering kitchen, bar, and two-story event space with a large deck reaching over and wrapping around the waterfront of Lake Harold. Mention the boathouse here instead? The new Lafayette Lodge is underway, it will feature 24 double queen and 9 king rooms.

The new pavilion will host concerts, and there are plans to build a 500-person amphitheater in the future. The existing banquet facilities were expanded and the on-site restaurant, Panorama Six82, turned into a premier, year-round dining establishment

with new chef Morgana Vesey from Hell’s Kitchen Season 20 with host Gordon Ramsay. Another new restaurant, Slice Wood Fired Pizzeria, will have 2 indoor golf simulators. The resort’s extensive lodging facilities include 18, 4-bedroom, 4 1/2 bath gambrel units, 13 brand new 2-bedroom units, 26 new expansive guest rooms, and 12, 1-bedroom, 1 bath Nano cottages, all with spacious living rooms, private decks, fireplaces, and most with a full kitchen and laundry facilities. All units are available to rent by groups or the general public.

Phase 2 is already underway and includes the addition of The Boathouse which will contain a seafood restaurant and bar, additional event space for up to 150 people, an outdoor year-round swimming pool, 30-person hot tub, radiant heated decks, boat rentals, indoor and outdoor showers, locker room facilities and beach access. Groundbreaking for a 33-room hotel called the Lafayette Lodge has begun with planned completion in May of 2023. By next summer the resort will be adding Butches Brooklyn Deli, with charging stations for 8 Tesla and 6 EV Electrify America Superchargers which will provide all types of electric vehicles with full charges in less than an hour.

Phase 3 will include an additional 80-100 room hotel, complete with spa, large fitness facility, indoor pool, bowling alleys and restaurant, as well as another 9-hole, walkable golf course surrounding Lake Harold, ideal for all skill levels. In all, another 60 million dollars will be invested in the resort in addition to the 40 million invested since 2014 to complete the resort plan. General Manager Brad McCoil said, “Our goal is to make the Owl’s Nest Resort one of the premier resorts in New England, not just because of our many on-site offerings but also our location to all

that the White Mountains Region has to offer. We’ve been quite busy creating something special and invite everyone to come experience it for themselves, you will not be disappointed,”

Owls Nest Golf Courses

The Owl’s Nest 18-hole championship is the only Nicklaus-designed course in New Hampshire. A Jack Nicklaus experience typically comes with a high premium, and a green fee under $100 is rare. Recently Jack’s course at the Owl’s Nest received accolades as one of the “Top Ten Best Value Nicklaus Golf Courses” in the world coming in at number 6 by NBC’s Sports Golf Pass. It is a magnificent layout with lots of elevation changes and fantastic hole designs. The real challenge here for golfers is focusing on their game with spectacular views abound in every direction.

The newly acquired White Mountain Country Club in nearby Ashland, NH will expand the Owl’s Nest capabilities for their resort golf, golf tournaments and events as the facility will undergo a

full course and facilities renovation that is already underway by William McNeil at Northeast Golf Company. The property also houses an 18-acre abandoned airstrip which will be converted into a vineyard and event venue with the old plane hangar serving as the centerpiece along the banks of the Pemigewasset Riv-

er. Northeast Golf Company will design a new 9-hole Vineyard Course at the resort as well. When complete, the Owl’s Nest will have 45 holes of golf for guests, outings and events.
