BY TIMOTHY BRANCO The golf travel industry offers thousands of destinations, resorts and courses throughout the country and across the globe. Golf travel is a growing industry offering large corporate and convention events, private and public club trips and the largest sector in the industry, individual and small group golf vacations. One of the newest and most popular sectors in the industry is “Stay Play & Watch,” PGA Tour, LPGA Tour & Champions Tour events. Hawaii Golf Tourism is focusing on “Tour Week” golf vacation packages in January to April this upcoming year.

Another growing golf travel sector “Stay Play & Train” allows players at all levels time to learn, practice, and play with professional guidance to ingrain good habits and to better enjoy the game.

The National Golf Foundation reports that 8.2 million golfers played golf while traveling in 2017. These numbers are expected to increase, especially with so many golfers traveling as retirees and those with grown families who typically have more free time for golf. Golf travel is truly a part of the game and every golfer has their own personal bucket list of great destinations. With every journey there is that first step and with golf travel, it is in the planning. Allinclusive golf vacations make the process very easy and golf travel agencies are well versed on the facilities and regions and all they have to offer. I

n 2001, Arnold Palmer appeared at The Greater Hartford Open to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of this prestigious PGA Tournament. The tournament was created by members of the Jaycees in Hartford, Connecticut and held at the esteemed Wethersfield Country Club in 1952. The Greater Hartford (then called The Insurance City Open) was home to Arnold Palmer’s first PGA Tour win in 1956. From 1955 – 2011, he would go on to win

92 times on the PGA Tour, the Champions Tour and International competitions including seven majors.

He was by all measures the King, though he never acted that way. He cherished life and the game of golf, his presence in the game was legendary. In the history of all sports no one individual has ever single handedly transformed a game like Arnold Palmer did with golf.

He gave golf as a gift to us all, to embellish, to love and to share with others we love.

In 1997, The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund honored Arnold Palmer with the first Francis Ouimet Award for his Lifelong Achievement to Golf at Copley Place in Boston. Mr. Palmer was involved in the Ouimet Fund for over 20 years thanks to the efforts of Richard “Dick” Connolly, Jr. who served as his financial advisor and was a close personal friend. It was at a Francis Ouimet banquet that I met Mr. Palmer for the first time and was awestruck by his innate ability to make every introduction something special. There were 1,500 people at the event, the largest golf banquet in the world. Arnold, with his warm handshake, strong eye contact and genuine sincerity, may have met them all. He spoke of life, of golf, of friendships and family. He brought the room to tears as he said he would leave Boston in the morning for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. for prostate cancer surgery.

PALMER WAS INVOLVED IN THE OUIMET FUND FOR OVER 20 YEARS THANKS TO THE EFFORTS OF RICHARD “DICK” CONNOLLY, JR. WHO SERVED AS HIS FINANCIAL ADVISOR AND WAS A CLOSE PERSONAL FRIEND.

In the years following, I had numerous opportunities

to meet and chat with him at various tournaments, press events and even served as a marshal alongside him at The Bank of America Championship, held at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord, Mass. from 19992005. I was always amazed by his memory and his ability to recollect names and small details about so many people he met even casually in life. My most cherished memory of Mr. Palmer was during one of my stays at Bay Hill on my birthday in 2015 when we had some time to chat about life and golf. Mr. Palmer said to me, “do something every day that you're proud of, and it will be a good day”. They are words I try to live by.

LATROBE COUNTRY CLUB

D

eacon Palmer, Arnie’s dad, served as superintendent and golf professional at Latrobe Country Club until his death in 1976.

But it was his son, Arnold, who made the biggest impact on the game of golf, and later purchased his beloved club in 1971. In the early 1960s, Deacon and Arnold formulated the plans to expand the original 9-hole course to 18-holes. When Arnold bought the club, further modernization commenced but the course and the unpretentious clubhouse have never lost their original charm.

Arnold Palmer returned to Latrobe every summer throughout his adult life to the home perched on a hill overlooking the entrance to the club where he loved nothing better than to play golf with his close circle of friends, have lunch in what is now the Palmer Grille, and tinker with clubs in his workshop.

In his essay on Latrobe in the book

, Palmer

observed that he always returned to Latrobe because “it is my home, and by that, I mean it isn’t just where I came from and where I grew up, but it’s the home that’s in my heart.” His house was 100 steps from his office and two minutes from the first tee.

He noted, “Home is where I can go play eighteen holes of golf, and the only attention I’ll receive for most of that round is a wave from a friend or an acquaintance.”

At Latrobe Country Club Arnold Palmer is still with us. His locker was locked with all its contents still inside. Members no longer see him at his table in the grill, hitting balls on the range, jogging or riding his bicycle on the cart paths, or treating the staff to hot dogs at the snack bar at the turn on Mondays when the course was closed. But make no mistake, Latrobe retains Palmer’s spirit of kindness to all he encountered and his passion for the game of golf.

Today, you don’t have to be a member of the club to play Arnie’s home course. If you stay at one of the guest houses at the club, you can be a member for a day at Latrobe. The course affords fine views of the mountains; the signature hole is the par-3 12th, where the ride up the hill to the tee box provides a panoramic vista. A journey to Latrobe is a trip through golf history. You won’t see Arnie, but you will feel his presence. And of course, you can enjoy an “Arnold Palmer” in the clubhouse after your round. 1945 PGA Championship, finishing second to Byron Nelson.

The 5-10, 175 pound Byrd was not physically imposing on the field or the course, but his focus and fervor allowed him to excel at the highest level in two of the most difficult sports to play.

Byrd’s love of golf extended past his playing career. He would eventually own a par-3 course in Alabama where he would hire future famed golf instructor Jimmy Ballard. Byrd was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1974 and passed away in 1981 at age 73.

In the annals of multi-sport stars, his name is erroneously ignored.

While it is true that Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz and probable future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander have solid links skills, Sam Byrd sits alone in rarified air - the only man to play in baseball’s glorified Fall Classic and on golf’s hallowed ground at Augusta.

Everyone knows that your putter is used for the most strokes in every round of golf you play. Some golfers have that trusty flat stick they just can’t give up and others, like me, are constantly tinkering with a new wand in hopes of finding that magic stroke that saves pars and drains more birds!
