The National Golf Foundation (NGF), released its latest member research publication on the $20.5 billion United States’ golf travel industry. Whether it was a buddies’ trip, couples’ getaway, family vacation, business travel or a solo journey to a bucket-list destination, 39% of adult golfers took a trip with an overnight stay during which they played at least one round of golf. A total of 8.2 million golfers played 57.6 million rounds of golf while traveling last year. Northeast golfers account for nearly one third of the industry. It is no secret that golf travel plants the seeds for potential buyers in golf course communities throughout the country. There are more than 4000 golf course communities in the U.S. today with the largest percentage in the sun-belt states of California, Arizona, Florida and the Carolinas. In the Northeast, golf course communities continue to appeal to affluent buyers looking for security and amenity-rich, all-inclusive living choices. In addition, the Northeast has garnered the highest resale values year over year in the industry. The Northeast accounts for 44 of the top 75 highest income regions in the U.S., and in the last 5 years nearly 30% of all golf home, second home and retirement home buyers came from Northeast markets. The first golf course communities date back to the 1920s; they were simple communities with few amenities other than golf. In the 1990s the boom began in golf course development as golf became the leading amenity buyers were seeking. Many developments included large clubhouses with pools and tennis facilities and were located across the Southeast and Southwest. Today, golf course communities are expansive centers for living and recreation. They offer large community centers and unlimited activities and amenities for residents and guest. It’s all about being in play.” With the Boston Bruins Foundation, Sweeney has gone from changing lines to changing lives. He relates, “We recently established made a $1 million, three-year commitment to the Special Olympics. “It’s a perfect partnership especially since the Bruins played Chicago in the Winter Classic and the Special Olympics started in Chicago. We’ve also had several Special Olympians as banner captains for Bruins’ game.” The Foundation has created BFit, a program that teaches students about health, wellness, and exercise, and an education program that provides New England teachers with supplemental curriculum materials through the integration of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Sweeney finished his NHL career with the Sabres, Islanders,
