GIVE THANKS Each year as we transition into the holidays, we should take a moment and reflect on the true meaning of the season. It is a time for family and friends to gather and celebrate. We may celebrate different things in different ways, but the one main thing everyone is celebrating is love and family. It is a time to show how much you truly appreciate everyone in your life. It is also a time give thanks for all that we have and how fortunate we are as Americans. Across the country and around the globe there are many that have never tasted freedom, prosperity or opportunity. Give thanks to our military, our veterans and our first responders, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. For all of us, it is important to give in any way we can to others. For some, it may be money to help those in need, for others it’s volunteering their time for an important cause. Giving is the spirit and the essence of the holiday season. Kindness and sharing will always be the pathway to balance and happiness for us all. Mark Twain once said,” Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see”. For this holiday season, give yourself the gift that keeps on giving, “Pass it On” and “Pay it Forward. Floor Coverings Besides beautifying your home, new floor covering offers a host of other advantages heading into the fall and winter. Carpeting with new padding can provide better insulation to floors and tile in the bath and kitchen makes for easier cleaning and maintenance for homeowners. It’s a time of year when the elements outside find their way in, so plan entranceways that can be easily cleaned and matting that will remove salt and sand upon entering.

Window & Doors This largest source of heating loss in your home is windows and doors. Improperly insulated and poorly sealed windows and doors can increase heating cost by as much as 50% monthly. Have a professional evaluation at least every 5 years on all the doors and windows in your home. Often, the cost of replacing windows and doors on a payment plan will pay for itself over 4-5 winters and the savings is immediate, not to mention the comfort value of having no more drafts and cool spots in your home.

Heating & Ventilation In colder months a warm and cozy home is a happy home. Full inspection of all heating and ventilation systems is critical to efficient operation and safety. It begins with your chimney which provides the single outlet in your home for dangerous gases and fumes. It should be cleaned each year if you are using alternative fuels such as wood and pellet stoves. In addition, heating systems require yearly maintenance and service. The Exterior The outside of your home provides the first defense in protecting your family and belongings from the elements. Gutters, siding and garage doors should be sound and provide proper sealing from wind, snow, and rain. Make sure gutters are clean and functional, and your roof is sound and resistant to ice damming that can cause serious interior damage. Make sure outdoor faucets are off and drained and sliding doors are in good working order so snow and rain do not find their way into your home. Put away, tie down, and cover outdoor furniture and gas grills. Be sure also to provide border markings for snow plowing to minimize damage to your property.

Trees & Plantings Often forgotten until it’s too late are trees and plantings. Make sure that tree limbs are cut away from your home to prevent damage and mold from growing. Sensitive landscaping shrubs and plants often require covering to protect them from the elements as well. Make sure these coverings are properly secured. Trim overgrown branches back from the house and electrical wires to prevent iced-over or windswept branches from causing property damage and power outages. Check your vents for blockages from insects’ nest or dryer lint. Make sure pathways and driveways are well lit for safe entry and exit.

Smoke Alarms In three out of five home, deaths from fire happen in properties without working smoke alarms. Check batteries, function, and placement of all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors once a year; the day you set the clocks back is a good time to do it. Check the manufacturing date and replace any detectors that are more than 10 years old. If you burn alternative fuels, especially wood and pellets, keep two fire extinguishers on hand, one by your bed and another away from the heat source preferably along an exit route.
