The Southcoast is situated along the pristine coastline of Buzzards Bay between Cape Cod and Rhode Island. The region is often referred to as a “Diamond in the Rough’ because of its proximity to Boston, Providence, RI and Cape Cod & The Islands. Few places anywhere in New England have the coastal access, wide open spaces, historic charm and character as this region. The Southcoast is also referred to as the “Farm Coast” in Massachusetts with its large number of family owned farms, vineyards, cranberry bogs and fishing ports that are vital food sources in New England and beyond. The term “Southcoast” was first used by Todd Gross at WHDH- TV in Boston in weather forecast to describe the region in the l980’s. Soon after, The New Bedford Standard Times Newspaper picked up on the term and became the Southcoast Media Group. The name has now been accepted and is widely used by all. Today the Southcoast has become the place to be for corporations looking for great incentives for development and has seen a new influx of younger residents who want a better quality of life for themselves and their families and more affordable options for living. The Best of the Southcoast is about the communities, living in the region and what makes this place so very special. These coastal communities date well back in time and have played a major role in the history of our country. Our challenge in the years ahead as metropolitan Boston and Providence continue to grow is to preserve and protect the resources and quality of life for generations ahead.

Nothing brightens up a backyard entertaining space quite like a fire pit. Fire pits can be a focal point and add drama and beauty to your outdoor living space. They can even extend the use of your outdoor space during cold winter months. At other times of the year, they make a nice gathering place for roasting weenies and marshmallows and enjoying time with friends.

First off, before you make any decisions, check regulations regarding the type of fire feature, with your local authorities regarding fire features in construction materials, dimensions and location, as your area. There may be operational requirements, well as restrictions on what can be burnt. #HOMEOWNERLIFESTYLE

With the addition of a fire pit, you can turn any night into a stargazer’s paradise and extend the usefulness of your outdoor space on even the coldest days. Where will the fire pit be located? Always ensure there is plenty of space between your pit and other structures such as walls, fences and your home. In addition, the fire pit should be securely placed on a hard, nonflammable surface such as the ground or stone surface. Fire pits should never be placed on a wooden deck, under an overhang or anything that could quickly catch fire. While it may seem obvious, fire pits should never be used indoors. There are many different materials used to create outdoor fire pits, this includes ceramic, stone, wrought iron, and copper. You will often find that high-quality metals such as copper and iron last longer and retain their heat far better than other materials such as stone. Some pits come with added features such as grills and windows, which allow you to easily cook or BBQ, perfect for family get-togethers during the summer. Open or closed fire pits are also style choices. Open pits give you that natural campfire feel, yet they won’t retain heat as well as closed pits such as bowls.

What fuel source should the fire pit use? This is important because your space restricts your options. A dilemma for many first-time fire pit buyers is deciding whether to obtain a pit that utilizes gas such as propane, or a wood burning fire pit that utilizes firewood as the fuel source. If you love the sound of a crackling fire and an aroma of burning wood, then wood might be the choice for you. Wood fire pits need plenty of space to ventilate properly, and will require more maintenance since it produces ash that you will need to clean regularly. You can also burn charcoal, however, like wood, charcoal will require clean up after use. A gas fire pit is a popular choice thanks to its ease of use and low maintenance. Propane or natural gas pits can be used on open porches with overhead roofs, and are generally neater, with no pile of wood, ashes, smoke or other debris to contend with. Which type of fire pit is for you? Portable fire pits offer the most flexibility and versatility and come in a variety of [15]

shapes, sizes, materials and can meet almost any budget requirement. They can range from small to full size outdoor dining fire tables. They can be fueled by burning wood, natural gas, propane or gel. You can even take them with you if you move. With permanent fire pits, you have the advantage of being able to design them to blend in with your existing patio or yard, even matching the materials already in place. Styles of fire pits include basic metal fire bowls to elaborate, multi-level and multifunctional units. Other possibilities include square models that resemble low tables. The term fire bowl covers a wide range of designs and can be made from many different fire resistant materials. Some are designed on a stand or have legs to raise them off the ground. Many models combine the qualities of two of the most social hubs of the home - fireside warmth and grilling table. Most fire pits are easy on the budget, with a nice, safe model available for under $300 or so. Fire tables and pits that use more expensive materials can climb upwards in cost.
