BY TIMOTHY BRANCO Once again, the seasons have changed from the long warm days of summer to the cooler shortened days of fall. Of all the golf seasons, fall is simply the most spectacular here in New England with its cooler weather and tapestries of colorful foliage. Each year fall marks the end of the New England Golf season for many of us. For others, it is the beginning of another golf season, the golf travel season. This is the time of year to plan your fall, winter, and spring golf vacations.

Nothing makes a New England golf winter shorter than a few golf getaways to warmer and greener destinations.

This year’s Annual Golf Travel Planner is simply one of the most comprehensive guides to golf travel that we have ever compiled. As such, they tend to be very proactive when it comes to sustainability and, in fact, clubs are much more environmentally-friendly than the typical homeowner. A recent survey of private clubs found that 74% pursue sustainable practices, and the typical club spends nearly $50,000 each year to promote sustainability. Like many environmentally-friendly businesses, private clubs use a variety of traditionally sustainable practices, including reducing the amount of water they use, particularly on golf properties; using environmentally safe products; and using recycled materials in their operations. Most clubs also have staff training programs in place to teach sustainable practices and most also participate in advanced

BY JACK ROSS WHEN THE VAST MAJORITY OF RECREATIONAL GOLFERS TEE UP THE BALL EACH WEEKEND, WE PLAY THE SAME RULES THAT GOVERN MOST TOURNAMENT GOLF: “STROKE PLAY.” WE TRY TO POST OUR BEST CUMULATIVE SCORE OVER 18 HOLES, KNOWING THAT THE DREADED SNOWMAN (OR WORSE) LURKS BEHIND EVERY WATER HAZARD. But every two years the golf world is focused on the Ryder Cup matches, which are played under a unique team format governed by “match play”rules. During the first two days, the teams play four “fourball” matches and four “foursomes” matches. The final day

brings twelve singles matches. In fourball matches, each player plays his own ball, and the lowest score of the two players counts. In foursomes, the players alternate shots through the hole.

All Ryder Cup matches are governed by general match play rules – the players

compete to win individual holes, and the total score for a round is irrelevant. If you win more holes than your opponent, you win the match and one point for your team. Ties can occur in Ryder Cup matches, which generate a half point for each team. A match ends

when one “side” is ahead by more holes than are left to play. You don’t really want to lose 10-8 in match play (ten holes up with eight to play.)

Match play rules sometimes depart from stroke play rules. Probably the biggest difference is that players commonly concede short putts to their opponent. A hole itself may be conceded. It is important to play in turn in match play (farthest from hole first). Your opponent may require you to replay a shot played out of turn. Many infractions that would yield a 2-stroke penalty in stroke play result in a loss of hole in match play, such as playing a wrong ball or playing from a wrong place following a drop.

Match play can require different strategies than stroke play, when you are simply playing against the course. It is important to monitor your opponent’s situation. If he has hit into a water hazard, you might play a more conservative shot to the green. If you need to make a putt to “halve” (tie) a hole, be sure to hit it firmly since you ar-

In fourball competition, partners may change the order of play between them. On the putting green, the closer ball may be played first to provide a partner a line on the putt.
