A Time for Planning BY TIMOTHY BRANCO Once again, the seasons have changed from the long warm days of summer to the cooler shortened days of fall. Of all the golf seasons, fall is simply the most spectacular here in New England with its cooler weather and tapestries of colorful foliage. Each year fall marks the end of the New England Golf season for many of us. For others, it is the beginning of another golf season, the golf travel season. This is the time of year to plan your fall, winter, and spring golf vacations. Nothing makes a New England golf winter shorter than a few golf getaways to warmer and greener destinations. This year’s Annual Golf Travel Planner is simply one of the most comprehensive guides to golf travel that we have ever compiled. It is packed with great destinations from coast to coast and includes a full array of international travel options as well. A recent survey of private clubs found that 74% pursue sustainable practices, and the typical club spends nearly $50,000 each year to promote sustainability. Like many environmentally-friendly businesses, private clubs use a variety of traditionally sustainable practices, including reducing the amount of water they use, particularly on golf properties; using environmentally safe products; and using recycled materials in their operations. Most clubs also have staff training programs in place to teach sustainable practices and most also participate in advanced

Today’s private club is more reflective than ever of the values and interests of most active Americans. It’s more inclusive, family-oriented, and devoted to health and wellness. They are oriented more towards full family participation through a wide range of offerings, including pool-based activities, game nights, and other family events. In short, many private clubs have expanded their offerings to better reflect Americans’ contemporary lifestyles. Private clubs offer a greater range of lifestyle and recreational benefits, and to a wider cross-section of

Elmcrest Country Club’s Jack Kearney had to earn every shot down the stretch
