FROM THE EDITOR

A COASTAL LIFE New England is one of the most coastal regions in our country with 6,130 miles of tidal shoreline and thousands of small islands. This is due to the fact that it has a great many inlets, bays, and peninsulas. Much of this ragged coastline was formed by glacial eskers that were left behind by the Laurentide Ice Sheet over 75,000 years ago. All of the jagged New England coast was influenced by this period. The Maine shoreline is actually longer than California at nearly 3500 miles. New England more than any other region in the country is coastal. Living in New England affords us all some very special benefits and unlimited access to the sea. Our region is rich in history with some of the most interesting and unique communities for living a coastal life and truly wonderful places to visit. We are blessed by the rich bounty of fresh local food sources that our fishing and farming industries provide to us. Our coastlines offer unlimited living choices, remarkable beauty and expansive waterfront access for recreation and enjoyment. Summer is a great time to celebrate the season and the bounty of the sea. A large number of the region’s fishing communities host seafood festivals and fishing-related festivals such as blessings of the fleet in the warmer months, including the communities of Point Judith, Newport, and North Kingstown in Rhode Island - New Bedford, Gloucester, Marblehead, Sandwich, Provincetown, and Scituate in Massachusetts - New London, Connecticut – Hampton, Seabrook and Portsmouth in New Hampshire - Winter Harbor, Bar Harbor, Portland, and Rockland in Maine.

Enjoy the season and celebrate our Coastal Life.

Unrivaled coastal setting and sweeping ocean views: the ultimate East Coast family retreat has hit the open market. Presenting Newport’s crown jewel . . . T

ucked away on the Southeastern point of Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island, lies ‘Land’s End’, a storied family home sited on 5.6 oceanfront acres. Once owned by Pulitzer Prize winning author Edith Wharton, the property is comprised of an 8+ bedroom main house and 3 bedroom carriage house overlooking Newport’s famed Cliff Walk and Atlantic Ocean, providing 1,200 feet of ocean frontage. As Wharton famously touted in her writings, ‘Land’s End’ offers dynamic ocean views from virtually every room, rivaling the most coveted vistas on the East Coast. An incredible yearround gathering place for family and friends, the property has been introduced to the market for sale, offered at $11,700,000.

[10]

Designed by architect John Sturgis during Newport’s Gilded Age, and later adorned with Ogden Codman motifs, the sun-drenched home is a classic example of understated elegance, retrofitted with modern upgrades including a chef’s kitchen, full house generator, billiards room and saltwater pool. Unlike many classic Newport estates, reminiscent of the days of yesteryear, ‘Land’s End’ welcomes a contemporary approach to living. The rooms, though generously scaled, evoke a sense of intimacy and informality. From the moment you step inside, it is evident that the home is intended to be lived in, loved, and enjoyed as a family retreat.

“From the moment you step inside, it is evident that the home is intended to be lived in, loved, and enjoyed.”

Home to many a Sunday family dinner, the dining room enjoys a breathtaking seascape and casual seating area for post-meal conversation.

Walking through the house, one is quickly enveloped with a sense of comfort and tranquility. Suited for leisure and laughter, one may cozy up to any of the home’s 8 working fireplaces, lounge in the back den or beloved living room, bask in the extraordinary coastal setting, or perhaps mix up a postswim cocktail in the wet bar pass through, leading from the pool terrace into the main foyer. Indoor and outdoor living become one in the same as floor to ceiling windows open onto wrap around verandas, lining the lush lawns that roll down to the sea. The lawns, though beautifully manicured, have often doubled as a seaside wiffle ball field or soccer arena for the current owner’s children and grandchildren, a memory fondly recalled by all. The property exudes a quite confidence about it, as it undoubtedly carries the title as Newport’s crown jewel of real estate. As one of Newport’s only current oceanfront offerings, ‘Land’s End’ presents an extraordinary opportunity to acquire an East Coast legacy property. Ready to be enjoyed by its next family of owners, the home is the perfect balance of history, modernity, location and design. A must-see in New England.

Great Custom Wood Furniture Makers

Lorimer Tables

Timeless Desgins for Living F

or centuries, hand crafted wooden furniture makers

have provided high quality, timeless furniture for home and business.

In this increasingly technological age, it can be

difficult to step back into the past or bring back old-fashioned values and styles. Handmade wood furniture embraces the oldfashioned in all of us and brings this directly into your home. At the same time, it also unites modern elements and can suit any contemporary dwelling. Wood furniture is timeless and beautiful, but handmade wooden furniture is definitely a step above and creates family heirloom pieces that are handed down from generation to generation. It is the enduring quality and craftsmanship that makes these works of art stand the test of time and relevance. Wooden furniture gives off a regal and classic appearance that withstands changes in styles and cultural fads. Sturdy wooden furniture surpasses industrial metal or manufactured plastic styles. Solid wood will establish an elegant theme which resonates with many of us today. “First and foremost, remember that a piece of handcrafted furniture has a life of its own; it imparts a special feeling, character, and personality through its design and appearance. Design is the heart, humanity, and spirit of the piece, says furniture craftsman Bruce Beeken of Beeken & Parsons Fine Furniture of Shelburne, Vermont.

The CRAFTSMAN and the CRAFT “You’ll want to know who made the piece, where they lived, and when they worked. Different people will have a different amount of interest in this aspect, but quite often it strikes to the heart of why people buy handcrafted furniture. People often buy native, handcrafted pieces because they love a place, are invested in that place, remember a treasured visit, or cherish a specific moment in their lives. To that end, you will want to know who the craftsman is, where the wood comes from, and which traditions inform his or her craft.” says Beeken. Customized furniture generally costs more than mass produced pieces. It has a higher cost because of the unique design and the meticulous building process that goes into fulfilling client specifications. A good team will give you exactly that, high quality custom furniture at a reasonable price that will provide years of enjoyment in your home. Here are just a few of the top custom wood furniture companies in New England. Remember great custom furniture takes time to make and the process of choosing should be a very important part of the process.

Subsequently, Bruce was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Craftsman’s Fellowship and Jeff worked in New York City, New Hampshire and Vermont in production woodworking shops. Their partnership has resulted in an approach to furniture making that integrates their interest in design, process and material. #CoastalHomeLife

Since then, Sakonnet Woodworking has been designing and making furniture for a variety of residential and commercial properties in New England (and beyond). At Sakonnet Furniture Makers we are dedicated to excellence in the art of classical woodworking and take great pride in creating furniture for our clients who value the art of traditional craftsmanship. At Sakonnet Woodworking we are passionate about preserving the legacy of traditional craftsmanship and our standard of work strives to provide a better understanding for the value of heirloom quality furniture that will not only last a lifetime, but will be used, enjoyed, and shared throughout generations.

Saltwoods, Boston, MA Saltwoods was started in January 2014, after Dan Crossman decided to leave his 12-year corporate career in Germany and pursue his passion for woodworking and design. The name Saltwoods was born after working on a salvaged piece of white oak from the Boston Navy Shipyard dating back to the 18th century. With a keen understanding of custom manufacturing, Crossman was often disappointed and frustrated to see the poor quality, selection, and lack of customization the big furniture stores were offering. By blending fabrication techniques, Saltwoods can offer more options, cut down on the lead time, and ensure higher quality. It’s time to shake up the sleepy furniture industry with

Natural Stone:

The Original Building Material THE MOST POPULAR NEW BUILDING MATERIAL MAKES THE MOST SENSE

Building material suppliers and manufacturers of the last 100 years have introduced countless innovations in wood, concrete, block, plastic, metal, aggregate and many other building products and materials for use in indoor and outdoor building solutions. It seems almost yearly there is some new amazing material that outlasts and outperforms and is the newest craze. Most of these products are expensive, contribute greatly to our environmental footprint and in the long run require replacement or repair over time. There is only one building material that outperforms, outlasts and is the most permanent solution in building and construction and that quite simply is the oldest, Stone!

Natural Stone Stone is immensely popular, partly because it has countless applications.

Improve Your Life with a Steam Shower By T.R. Branco

STEAM, SAUNA, SHOWER-OASIS! Turn you ordinary shower into a relaxing steam room with a Steam Shower. Steam showers are luxury appliances that consists of a water tank that heats the water until it causes steam which is then dispersed around a person’s body. A steam shower is essentially a steam room that offers the typical features of a bathroom shower. Steam showers can be used just as you would a regular shower. With a showerhead that looks much like every other model on the market, these units are much more functional. Steam showers come with a variety of settings for the times you seek more luxury. These include more jets, massage settings, waterfall or even rainfall heads. The steam shower is a whole new level in home spa technology. Not only does the steam shower offer a greater level showering experience over a standard shower, you will also enjoy all the comforts and feelings of a luxury spa in your own home. If you are looking to make your bath a perfect oasis, then steam showering is for you.

The Luxurious Features of Steam Showers It’s well known what a good feeling a steam shower can provide you; it helps you relax your body and mind. These showers offer more luxurious features created to give the user the best sense of joy and relaxation. Steam showers have digital control panels to access all their features so you can choose whichever feature you want to use, and some units even come with a remote control so you can pick the features you want before entering the shower. Lighting and music can enhance your relaxation. Some showers include lighting that can change colors, and some feature audio systems that allow users to try out music using USB, CD, or any device they wish; they can also come with a radio and speaker system.

How Steam Showers Improve Our Health The primary purpose of steam showers is to provide the person a wonderful environment to relax and cleanse himself. As an added bonus, people have found that it is also advantageous to enjoy steam sessions because of the health benefits it gives. Toxins are extremely harmful to your body. The steam shower helps a person detoxify by making him sweat. When one sweats, the pores open up allowing water and toxins to leave your body. A steam shower also increases your blood flow resulting in better circulation; steam opens your sinuses to provide relief from congestion; and, it releases endorphins in your brain to help you relax mentally and emotionally.

Boston, MA | Constitution Marina, Boston Harbor Boston and Constitution Marina on Boston Harbor is located right on the Freedom Trail in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston, just a 5-minute walk from North Station and the Boston Garden, convenient to water transportation, all major waterfront attraction and all the great things Boston has to offer. Each summer it is the destination of choice for boaters from around New England and beyond. One of the most historic marine locations in the country, which is the home of U.S. Constitution. If you are thinking 4th of July book early and plan on a two- night minimum. That week there are numerous waterfront events in Boston. Plymouth MA | Plymouth Town Wharf Located just North of Cape Cod, Plymouth is a tourist destination best known for Plymouth Rock and the Pilgrims who landed there centuries ago. Plymouth is rife with history and small-town appeal, and offers plenty to do. Visit the Pilgrim Hall Museum, take a tour of the Mayflower brewing company, or stroll the shops and restaurants located in the downtown harbor district, within walking distance from the Brewer Plymouth Marine. The harbor facilities are wonderful are offer boaters extensive services, there are plenty of hotels and B&B’s
for a night off the water in town. The restaurants offer some of the best seafood delights in new England. Onset, MA | Point Independence Yacht Club Point Independence Yacht Club is located in Onset Bay, directly off Buzzards Bay, close to the west opening of the Cape Cod Canal. This well-protected bay is surrounded by the quaint, Victorian Village of Onset. The calm, warm waters of Onset Bay are great for overnight mooring and dockage. Take the short walk to Onset Village to shop or dine at a variety of restaurants. The village founded in 1877 was originally part of Cape Cod before the Canal. Onset has been called “the people’s resort,” “summer home of the common people,” and “the Coney Island of the South Shore.” Onset is a great starting point to trips visiting the Elizabeth Islands along Buzzards Bay. Cuttyhunk, MA | Cuttyhunk Marina Cuttyhunk is a favorite destination on the NE Coast, being beautiful, isolated, peaceful, quiet, and unpretentious. Cuttyhunk is located in the south western most part of the Elizabeth Islands. The harbor in Cuttyhunk Pond is protected by sandbars that make for amazing beaches. In the summer, the Harbor Raw Bar Boat will deliver oysters, clams, shrimp, chowder, and other delicacies right to your boat in the harbor. This destination dates back to the 17th century as a big game fishing mecca, but it’s now equally attractive for sailors and weekend cruisers. Although the harbor can, at times, be crowded, the island is really known as a quite beautiful, and isolated spot to do some serious relaxation.

New Bedford, MA | Fairhaven Shipyard & Marina The historic whaling town of New Bedford has much to offer the cruising yachtsman. It is home to one of the world’s best fishing ports. New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, created in 1996, spans 34 acres and includes a visitor center, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the Seamen’s Bethel, the schooner Ernestina, and the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum. New Bedford sits behind a hurricane barrier, the largest stone structure on the East Coast. The harbor is one of the safest havens on the eastern seaboard and features a hurricane barrier with a 150-foot opening that is closed during storms. Padanaram South Dartmouth, MA | New Bedford Yacht Club Known as the jewel on Buzzard’s Bay, if you can find it. You certainly won’t want to miss this quaint and charming port of call. With views of The Elizabeth Island’s and majestic seaside home, Padanaram is one of the Southcoast regions top places to live. There’s one thing that sets Padanaram apart from many other destinations, you won’t find it listed on any chart. The charts say Apponagansett Bay is in the town of South Dartmouth, but everyone knows it’s really the historic village of Padanaram. There are great facilities at the New Bedford Yacht Club and wonderful small shops and restaurants a short walk away. Westport, MA | Westport Yacht Club Westport Point Westport Point is located at the mouth of the Westport River with beautiful harbor facilities adjacent to Horseneck Beach State Reservation, one of the region’s top beach communities. The historic Westport Point dates back to 1770. There are excellent restaurants along the waterfront and wonderful beach facilities, camping facilities and hiking trails on Gooseberry Island. Westport is just a short way by water from South Dartmouth, so a two day or weekend trip is perfect. Daily fees for boaters are very reasonable.

Little Compton, RI | Sakonnet Point Marina Located at the very end of Historic Sakonnet Point across the bay from Newport RI is the Sakonnet Point Marina in a quiet protected cove. Little Compton is an unpretentious and private community and one of the best kept secrets in Rhode Island. The famous golf architect Donald Ross summered here and built Sakonnet Golf Club. This is a great overnight stop on route to the bustling Newport Harbor. The Village Square is worth a trip into town with some great local food at reasonable prices. This is a relaxed laid-back community with many oceanfront and ocean view summer homes.

Newport, RI | Newport Yachting Center / Gurney’s Resort Marina The “City by the Sea” is the place to be for boaters in the summer. Newport is everything you could want and then some. Boaters have unlimited choices, the first of which is a mooring just off the waterfront with shuttle service by Old Port Marine. The next is dockage at the center of it all, The Newport Yachting Center. The dockage at Gurney’s Resort Marina on Goat Island offers full facilities and direct access to the resort. All three are great choices and Newport is one of the top boating destinations on the East Coast. Plan for at least two-night in Newport, there is so much to see and do. East Greenwich, RI | East Greenwich Marina East Greenwich Marina is located right in the heart of Greenwich Cove and is an ideal location to dock your boat during the summer. The Harborside Restaurant serves us some of the best in seafood dishes in New England, including a great baked stuffed lobster. Situated at the mouth of Warwick Cove, it features state-of-the-art, double-finger piers on 225 high-quality slips ranging from 20’ to 50’. They offer season passes, transients, short-term vacationers and a combination of recreational offerings second to none. You can even spend the day or drop in for a round of golf, a swim, cocktails, a meal or to simply share a relaxing evening by the fire pits enjoying the stunning views and sunsets over Narragansett Bay.

Specialty Grocers Find the food to keep your family going! BY PAUL MIGNOSA For the first 18 years of my life, I spent almost every day at my family’s grocery store, Mignosa’s Fruit Basket. Established in 1903 in South Boston by my great-grandfather, it has been owned and operated by the Mignosa family since the beginning. We had two locations-South Boston & Quincy, and each store was as vastly different as its customers and the area it served. Mignosa’s was the only store in Southie where you could buy fresh produce in the early 1900s. In the mid-1960s, Mignosa’s expanded to Quincy, and over the years, Mignosa’s has become a staple of the local community as a destination for workers to visit on their lunch breaks. From firefighters and police to plumbers and construction workers, to teachers, lawyers and dentists, Mignosa Fruit Basket is proud to serve those who have built upon their community’s rich foundation with years of hard work. The Fruit Basket was Whole Foods before Whole Foods even existed. In the East Bay of Rhode Island, there are many gourmet grocery stores similar to Mignosa’s that are staples of their communities that provide fresh ingredients, locally sourced with a family and community feel. These stores are what continue to make our towns thrive. A study from the Institute For Local Self-Reliance stated that several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, and farms — further strengthening the economic base of the whole community. Here are some great specialty shops in your area that are worth the visit.

They also have a Community Partners’ Program where non-profits get monthly donations by submitting Clements’ receipts. Visit their locations in Portsmouth and Plymouth.

DAVE’S MARKETPLACE Dave’s Fresh Marketplace has established an outstanding reputation for quality products and superior customer service. In 1969, Dave Cesario opened a small roadside fruit and vegetable stand; now, almost 50 years later, Dave’s has grown into the largest independent grocery chain in Rhode Island. Dave’s is known for its fresh, delicious foods and prepared meals. Dave’s has 10 locations across Rhode Island.

McQuade’s Marketplace in-store bakeshop is a full-service department for all your bakery needs. From Wedding Cakes to party platters they do it all. Visit their locations- Jamestown and Westerly, RI and Mystic, CT.

BELMONT MARKET Jack Siravo has taken Belmont Fruit, his family’s wholesale and produce seasonal fruit stand and turned it into Belmont Market, a premier supermarket shopping experience. Because Belmont runs its own wholesale produce operation and sources locally whenever possible, their products are often days fresher than that of its chain store counterparts. Check them out off Kingstown Road in Wakefield.

THE GREEN GROCER Veteran owned and operated, owners John and Aly Wood are passionate about the community they live in, their family, and natural and organic foods. John, a Gulf War veteran started eliminating a lot of environmental toxins from his daily life and with his wife Aly, built a store that provides all organic, healthy foods for you to live the best life you can live. From groceries, to produce and everything in between, the Green Grocer is the perfect place to shop to start your path of living a healthier lifestyle. Located on East Main Rd., Portsmouth.
