Making your cultural plans?
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
ven as we’re hunkering down for the next 13 weeks of winter, the arts and cultural community in the Berkshires is beginning to share plans for the 2025 season. This is a great time to make your selections of season tickets, event reservations and ideas for the perfect Berkshire weekend of culture. Here are the first words from the culture community.
Shakespeare & Company in Lenox is opening its season on June 20th with a world premiere. The play will be “The Victim” by Lawrence Goodman, and will feature theater veteran Annette Miller. The play tells the stories of three women with very different backgrounds.
Some of the best magic from this company comes in their outdoor productions. “Romeo and Juliet” is on the schedule from July 12 through August 11. That month, August Wilson’s American Century Cycle also begins. This season, “The Piano Lesson,” which won both a Pulitzer and a Tony Award comes to the stage beginning July 25.
Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” directed by Allyn Burrows and Founding Artistic Director Tina Packer runs from August 14 through August 24.
At Mass MoCA in North Adams, a varied menu of exhibitions, music presentations and family programs are planned for 2025. Beginning Feb. 1, the exhibition, “Dirty & Disorderly: Contemporary Artists on Disgust” opens. I’m sure they will have plenty to talk about. Anna Ting Möller, New Red Order, and Nguyen Duy Manh use the aesthetics of disgust to understand the social construction of putrid and squalid things. Won’t that be fun?
Later in the month, “Allison Pebworth: Cultural Apothecary” opens. For over 10 years, the artist has been thinking about a 19th-century neurological disorder she calls Americanitis. With vague symptoms ranging from abnormal fatigue to premature baldness, a diagnosis of Americanitis essentially pathologized the anxiety and ennui that plagued many Americans in the wake of industrialization and urbanization.
In May, “Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream…” opens. It is the first major museum survey of the artist’s work, looking at American politics, warts and all, including boxing, lynching of Mexican Americans, border walls, politics, greed, the Ku Klux Klan and the failings and triumphs of society. There will be talks, guided walks, and other programs related the the exhibitions.
In the music arena, Mass MoCA will present slowdive on Jan. 31. They’re the group that released “Pygmalion”
29 years ago, a self-titled record in 2017 and a reunion set at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival. They’ve been selling out shows and releasing new music ever since.
Dave Guy, trumpet player and all around hip hop/jazz guy takes the stage February 28. You’ve heard him on records and on stage with Amy Winehouse, The Roots, Sharon Jones and Al Green. He’ll front his own band for this gig.
Vocalist Angélica Garcia is up on March 22 with her brand of poppish sounds. Her 2020 hit, “Jicama” was on Barack Obama’s personal best of the year playlist then.
Feminist icon, Grammy winner, Broadway star, etcetera, Ani Di Franco will appear on April 25. She was one of the first artists to create her own label in 1990. Her music has embraced punk, funk, hip hop, jazz, soul, electronica, and more. Here 23rd album was released in May.
Prepare for a take-no-prisoners evening with Fran Lebowitz on March 15. From Fran Lebowitz, expect no apologies, opinion and social commentary that will have you laughing and thinking. She’s shared her pet peeves (baggage claim areas, adults who roller skate and children who speak French), and will no-doubt have a thing or two to say about current events.
“DaddyAF: Waiting for Peter Pan” is up May 8. Come prepared to witness a meditation on life’s purpose, created and performed by a queer African American acutely aware of the finite time he has left on the planet. This co-presentation with Jacob’s Pillow connects 600 years of genealogy, HIV, the shattering loss of a husband, dance over 35 years and the current reality of a 63-year old body.
At the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, the vocal ensemble, Chanticleer, will present a concert on April 11. Celebrated as “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker, they are one of the most prolific recording and touring ensembles in the world.
“Pilobolus — re:CREATION Tour” touches down on May 3. This endlessly creative group focuses its attention on the act of creativity itself.
Madeleine Peyroux & Bettye LaVette have Great Barrington as a stop on their “Let’s Walk” tour for May 16. Madeleine Peyroux is an American jazz singer and songwriter who began her career as a teenager on the streets of Paris. Bettye LaVette is hailed by The New York Times as “one of the great soul interpreters of her generation,” while country music legend George Jones characterized her as “truly a singer’s singer.”
Barrington Stage in Pittsfield has announced a new production of “Camelot” for 2025. It will be directed by the theater’s artistic director, Alan Paul beginning in June. It’s a response to the country’s political environment, with the show’s exploration of democracy and a search for common ideals.
At Jacob’s Pillow, there is excitement about the opening of the newly reconstructed Doris Duke Theater on their campus in Becket. The artists who are scheduled to perform this summer include Andrew Schneider, who will bring a Pillow commission to life that blends dance and audio.
In “HERE,” commissioned by Jacob’s Pillow, Schneider tells the story of a single space over eons, blending dance with spatialized audio.
The Elle Sofe Company will make its US debut, Korean artist Eun-Me Ahn returns after a 25-year hiatus with a US premiere, and Faye Driscoll will present a multi-sensory living sculpture of 10 people, dancing and surviving in a time of climate change.
Huang Yi, a Taiwanese choreographer will show an interesting work about calligraphy by turning dancers’ bodies into brushes and Shamel Pitts’ work, “Tribe” is a dance duet for Black men. Norman Rockwell Museum will be featuring the work of illustrator Walter Wick, famous for his “I Spy” book series this summer. Entitled, “I Spy: Walter Wick’s Hidden Wonders,” the exhibition will be on view starting June 7. Outside, the museum will be showing sculpture on the grounds with the theme of “Hidden Worlds and Wonders.”
There will be more from the cultural community so check back at BerkshiresWeek.com for the latest.
