BerkshiresWeek
5 top picks to bundle up and take a hike
A winter walk in the Berkshires is one of the most beguiling experiences in nature. As you enter the resting woods, pay close attention. You’ll hear the soft crunch of snow under foot and the cheerful greeting of a chickadee. Evergreens with puffy white coats lean into the path before you. The tracks of a bounding cottontail and a straight line of fox prints disappear under their dark, quiet canopy. Crisp air smells of snow melting in the sun, and it refreshes the mind and body as you walk along. There are so many places to hike in the Berkshire hills, so we’ve narrowed the selection to five of the best spots to visit in the winter. Remember to monitor weather forecasts before you set out, wear proper footwear, and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
bullard woods and gould meadows
Stockbridge
This time of year, it’s best to stay at lower elevations to avoid unpleasant weather conditions. This flat, 95 acre property owned by the Town of Stockbridge is situated in a valley with frontage on the Stockbridge Bowl.
From the parking area on Interlaken Road, the trail begins by crossing a meadow. On the way across, you have the option to walk a loop through the meadow, or continue straight, entering into the woods. In a short while, you will reach the shore of the lake, where there are some benches and a view.
There are several loops to extend the walk. If you stay on the trail that follows the shore, it eventually becomes a connector that leads into Bullard Woods.
The adjacent property is owned by the Stockbridge Bowl association. It has acres of wood with large, old growth trees to admire. After exploring here, you could take the trail out to West Hawthorne Road and continue to the grounds of Tanglewood, or loop back to the Interlaken Road parking area. Conversely, you could take the connector trail back the way you came.
clark art institute trails
Williamstown
If you’re feeling too antsy to view artwork inside The Clark, there’s plenty of natural beauty free for you to explore outside its walls.
The museum sits on 140 acres, with peaceful meadows, pastures and quiet forests.
The landscape slopes gently upwards towards Stone Hill.
You can park down below, by the museum building and Manton Research Center, or skip some of the elevation gain by parking at the Lunder Center above.
All of the area makes for great winter hiking. The pasture trail from the lower lot provides open views through a field and gentle terrain.
You can continue onto the Stone Bench Trail, or keep left and head to the Lunder Center at Stone Hill.
From there, there are tons of options. Try the Buxton School Trail, Stone Hill Road Trail and Hopkins Gale Trail, which are wide and gentle paths that make for excellent winter walking.
mountain meadow preserve Williamstown
The vistas are amazing at this Trustees preserve that straddles the Massachusetts-Vermont border. In winter, the views open up even more and you can see the rolling hills for miles on end. From the parking area on Mason Street, it won’t take long for the landscape to open up before you, on the meadow trail. It slowly ascends the slope at an angle, then curves back around and meets the Niles Trail near an overlook. Make sure to bring the camera for some frames of this spot.
If you continue on the Niles, be prepared for steeper climbing to the summit of Mason Hill. The summit trail branches off to your left, and this one is recommended for the most adventurous souls. You can continue up and over the hill to the Vermont line and hike in the Green Mountain state for a while. As you head back into Massachusetts, there are some ruins of an old camp on the Kalorama trail. All that is left to see now are some stone chimneys.
Nearby wetlands make this a diverse area that is home to a variety of critters.
basin pond reserve Becket
This is a property that will give you a sense of being deep in the wilderness without actually having to go far off a beaten path.
It’s 296 acres of hemlocks, oaks and hobblebush that borders the massive 16,500 acre October Mountain State Forest.
The BNRC property’s wetlands attract moose and beaver from the nearby lands.
There are 2.5 miles of trails that traverse some relatively easy terrain, and there are some great features to marvel at along the way.
You’ll cross a cascading stream shortly after leaving the trailhead, and the sculpture-like ice forms can be beautiful this time of year.
The trail then splits and can be made into a loop trip, or an out and back. If you go right, the trail is steeper and slightly longer. Either way, you’ll end up at a short spur trail that leads to a dam overlooking a beaver pond. You can continue your loop or head back the way you came to the trailhead.
thomas and palmer brook reserve
Great Barrington
The great thing about this property is that you can spend a few minutes here, or a couple hours, depending on your pace and what trails you try out. There are three options on the 267 acre reserve, and each trail has unique features with something for every nature lover.
The accessible meadow loop is .5 miles long. It follows the edge of the woods, crosses through a section of forest and rises onto a knoll that was once an apple orchard. Take a rest on one of the benches along the way and look out for wildlife stirring in the wetlands. Follow the loop back through more meadow and to the trailhead.
Another option is the woodland trail, which branches off from the meadow loop and heads into a forest. Be ready for some elevation gain. You’ll ascend for .6 miles until you reach the third trail option that you can continue onto — Whale Rock.
This add onto your walk brings you another .3 miles to a unique rock feature that is home to sensitive and unique habitats, so make sure to stay on the trail to protect this diverse area.
