Though pecans may not land on most people’s radar unless they’re served in pies, this valuable nut packs quite a nutritional punch. According to the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation, a 1-ounce serving of pecans also notes that pecans are a great source of healthy fats, as 60 percent of the 20 grams of total fat found in a 1-ounce serving is from monounsaturated fat while 30 percent is from polyunsaturated fat.

Got 10 minutes?
Take in the 10 x 10 Festival at Barrington Stage
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
Barrington Stage artistic director Alan Paul describes working on the upcoming 10 x 10 New Play Festival as a “fun pressure cooker.” Paul, and his co-director, Matthew Penn, are preparing 10 short plays that range from hilarious to deadly serious.
The 10 X 10 New Play Festival will be presented at the St. Germain Stage at the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center with performances February 13 through March 9. Shows are Thursday through Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The Festival is one of the cornerstones of the Pittsfield-wide 10 x 10 Upstreet Arts Festival during February.
Paul admits that the first time he heard about the concept of an evening of 10 minute plays, he didn’t think it could work. When he got into the selections, however, he warmed to the opportunity to create a sense of surprise — a whole world, really, in the space of ten minutes.
Another advantage to the tiny theater pieces is, in Paul’s words, “If you love it, it’s good, and if not, it’s over quickly.”
Paul believes the festival creates a special bond with the local audience. He thinks those who live in the Berkshires in the winter, especially those here in February have a “hardiness” about them that is freely shared during an evening of theater, creating a camaraderie that is unique to the season and the location, one that Paul relishes.
Unlike full length plays, as a director, Paul does not have the luxury of trying different approaches to particular scenes, or working for long sessions with the actors to try ways of getting at the meaning in the playwright’s words. With 10 minute plays, he says, he must go with his first impulse and “don’t overthink it.” Similarly, actors paint characters with broad strokes, and must create distinct and different characters as they move from play to play throughout the evening of ensemble action.
Paul strives to bring the audience quickly through the typical arc of a play — with the short time in which to work, he says the challenge is to identify the most direct path to the most profound change that occurs in the characters.
The form is unique, with different demands of the playwright than a full length play that typically runs for 80 minutes or more. With the small gems, Paul says “you need a great first line and a great button at the end” to make them memorable. There is only one short play that he is aware of that went on to be expanded into a full length play. In putting together the evening, Paul and co-director Penn spend focused time on the order in which the plays will be presented. Once, he admits, he changed the order after the preview night to make it flow better. He says that over the 3 years he has been involved with the 10 x 10 Festival, each evening of theater has taken on its own unique character. “You don’t know what it will be until you get there,” he says.
