TIME FOR THE SHEFFIELD DO-OVER PROTECT YOUR VOTE AND YOUR COMMUNITY ON APRIL 4TH It’s time for Sheffield voters to fix the mistake they didn’t make. Because of a posting error for a public hearing in 2021, a re-vote is required on the marijuana bylaw overwhelmingly approved at Sheffield’s Special Town Meeting last June. The bylaw permits five marijuana outdoor cultivation sites in Sheffield. There is currently no limit. Sheffield pro-actively limited marijuana retail sites to three despite the fact they earn substantial tax income for the town while cultivating marijuana does not. Did you know that Sheffield already has more marijuana cultivation sites than any town in the Berkshires and any town in Massachusetts? Know before you vote - marijuana money for Sheffield comes from retail sales. Not growing marijuana. You can read the facts on Page 10 of this issue of the Shoppers Guide. It’s time to respect voters’ wishes and finish what was approved last year by putting the cultivation bylaw on the books where they resoundingly said it belongs. Air conditioners need regular tune-ups to run properly. Without regular maintenance an air conditioner looses about 5% of its original eﬃciency for each year of operation. The good news is that you can recover most of that lost eﬃciency through regular maintenance. The cost of an annual tune-up is recovered very quickly in savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced repair costs. A system that is only 10% low on — coolant will cost about 20% more to operate. There are some things in addition to yearly tune-ups that you can do to help ensure a high level of comfort and proper system operation. Replace lters regularly; keep bushes and other materials away from the outside unit, avoid closing supply air outlets in your house. In almost all cases, closing supply outlets is harmful to the operation of the overall system.

SHEFFIELD'S MARIJUANA MONEY IS IN RETAIL DID YOU KNOW... Substantial marijuana taxes only come from retail sales. Growing marijuana does not generate taxes benefiting the town. Excise and sales taxes totaling 20% are collected on every marijuana retail product sold. NO excise or sales tax revenues are collected for growing marijuana so the town doesn't benefit. Towns are currently allowed to charge marijuana cultivators Community Impact Fees of no more than 3% of gross sales - but no other revenues. The fees are restricted to reimburse a community for expenses directly related to an actual grow operation - like conducting public safety or traffic studies or road improvements connected with a grow operation. Community Impact Fees cannot be used to lower property taxes. Community Impact Fees are under active scrutiny and attack: > Massachusetts’ legislature is considering multiple bills that could significantly reduce Community Impact Fees by imposing even more requirements on towns, including outside audits, to prove impacts result from grow operations. > Legal challenges are underway against towns that haven’t been able to show their Community Impact Fees are related to actual costs of grow operations. These lawsuits could see fees returned to marijuana establishments and the practice eliminated. Northampton, MA dropped Community Impact Fees. Nobody suggests banning marijuana cultivation in Sheffield. Simply to be sensible about their quantity and location. The town pro-actively limited the number of sales tax-contributing retail sites to three. Allowing five cultivation sites is sufficient since there is no benefit to Sheffield like selling marijuana products to consumers provides. Don’t be fooled. Marijuana cultivation offers no upside of additional revenue for Sheffield but all of the downsides seen for residents and neighborhoods (odor, safety and security, traffic, noise, light pollution). Let’s not sell our special community short.

Tiki and China are 13-year-old spayed domestic shorthair female cats who came to Berkshire Humane Society because their owner passed away. They are both brown tigers, with China having a lot of white on her chest and underside. These two seniors were littermates and have literally known each other their whole lives, so will be adopted out together. They qualify for senior and buddy discounts and a portion of their adoption fee is being underwritten by Haddad Subaru this week. Because they have never lived with children, an adult home would be best. The pair will not scratch up furniture as they have been declawed in the front. They will not be placed in a home with dogs.
