AN OPEN LETTER

to the Voters of the Towns of Great Barrington, Stockbridge and West Stockbridge As many of you are aware there is an ongoing debate as to whether we should change the name of the Monument Valley Regional Middle School to the W.E.B. DuBois Middle School. Each town will have an article on their town warrant at the annual town meeting, addressing this issue. As representatives of the veteran populations of the regional school district, we are asking you to vote NO on this incentive. Our decision to oppose this proposal is not taken lightly and has only been confirmed after many hours of research and discussion about the life, achievements and political views of W.E.B. DuBois. It is without doubt that Dr. DuBois has had a positive impact on race relations in this country; from his co-founding of the NAACP to his many treatises on slavery and race inequality. These actions, however, are overshadowed by his political views. He was an early student of socialist ideals. He endeared himself to these ideals while studying in Germany, where he was a backer of the German Social Democratic Party. In the 1940’s the NAACP distanced itself from communists. Ignoring the NAACP’s desires DuBois continued to fraternize with communists including Shirley Graham (his future second wife). He wrote “I believe Karl Marx, put his finger specifically upon our difficulties.” He felt that capitalism in the USA was responsible for poverty and racism and felt that socialism was the only answer. He concluded that the Soviet Union (USSR) was “The most Hopeful country on earth.” In 1961 Dubois joined the Communist Party, USA, stating: “Capitalism cannot reform itself; it is doomed to self-destruction. No universal selfishness can bring social good to all. Communism, the effort to give all men what they need and to ask of each the best they can contribute — this is the only way of human life.” He was a fierce supporter of Marx, Stalin

and Mao. Going as far as writing a glowing eulogy of Stalin. In the 60’s DuBois, taking a stand against the US Government’s demand that he and all members of the Communist Party register as such, he moved to Ghana where he lived out the rest of his life, denouncing his ties to the United States of America and its core values. It is due to these ideals that we are against paying tribute to DuBois. As Veterans who fought against the ideals DuBois so openly supported, we feel this proposal must be defeated. This is not a question of race. We are not judging this man on the color of his skin, but on the character of his political views. We would take this stand against anyone, no matter what race, gender or national origin. It is our responsibility as living veterans and protectorates of those who paid the ultimate price, many of whom were individuals of color, to uphold the ideals we sacrificed and died to protect. To allow this proposal to pass would fly in the face of everything we stand for. Please join us in voting NO on the afore mentioned proposal. We implore you to attend your local town meeting and vote against changing the name of the school. Please, do not let apathy rule the day! Sincerely, Commander Michael Casey

I’m very sweet, but sensitive. I came to the shelter because I was not compatible with children. I am house trained. Sometimes strangers are scary to me, so I may need a little time to feel able to open up. Once I’m comfortable I get very playful, and I love tennis balls more than anything! A big fenced yard to chase and retrieve balls would be a bonus! I also enjoy going for walks and hikes. I will require a more experienced adult owner who can read my body language and help guide me when I get stressed. Could I be the dog for you?

Forestry Mower The Forestry Mower will cut & mulch up brush, vines, small trees up to 6â€? diameter and will grind the stumps down. This is the fastest & most eďŹƒcient way to clear land. (No chipping, chainsaws, or laborers.)

Being on rubber tracks this machine has a very low ground pressure resulting in minimal ground disturbance especially in sensitive work areas. All cut material is mulched up & returned to the soil which feeds the soil & reduces erosion.
