If sitting in the dark for four days is your idea of a good time, you’ll be joining us to welcome the 18th year of the Berkshire International Film Festival. It’s a who’s who of actors, writers, directors, documentarians and beautiful people who gather for events, discussions and screenings.

The extravaganza kicks off on Thursday, May 30 and runs through Sunday, June 2, with non-stop events and screenings in Great Barrington and Lenox. Highlights include an opening night party under a tent behind the Town Hall in Great Barrington followed by a screening of “Thelma,” a flick about a grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer.

On Saturday, June 1, there is a tribute event honoring the great director, James Ivory. A cocktail party with dainty bites precedes a screening of a

documentary about the work of Ivory and his collaborator, Ismail Merchant and a discussion with Ivory. There are more than 20 films screening each day before the closing brunch, announcement of the juried prize winner, a screening and closing party. Our suggestion is to go to the BIFF website and pick your favorites.

Our headliner of the week is James Ivory, who will be the honoree at the Berkshire International Film Festival on June 1. A documentary about the work of this innovative director will be screened along with a reception and a live conversation with Ivory in Great Barrington about his work. Ivory became the oldest Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film, “Call Me By Your Name”. He was 89 when he accepted the award.
