This beautiful 2-year-old tortoiseshell, domestic shorthair is Hazel. Hazel arrived at Berkshire Humane Society because her owner could no longer care for her. She can be a bit shy to start, but once she gets to know you, she loves attention! Hazel enjoys chin scratches and will gladly take kitty treats and return the love with a "head boop." She has lived indoors only and is OK with children as well as dogs, but no other cats please as she prefers to be the resident diva. Hazel is described by the staff at Berkshire Humane Society as sweet, quiet and the "queen bee." If you're looking for a lovely addition to your household, be sure to inquire about Hazel today at (413)-447-7878 ext. 124

Update identification. Be sure that pets are wearing collars with current identification information.
Be careful with alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets, says the ASPCA. Animals can become very intoxicated, severely depressed or go into comas if they drink alcohol.
Check with the vet. Many pets are prone to anxiety from loud noises, such as thunderstorms and fireworks, and lots of commotion. Some veterinarians recommend a small course of anti-anxiety medication or a sedative to help pets cope.

Create a quiet space. If necessary, create a space in an interior room. Cover the pet crate with a blanket and offer favorite toys or bedding to create a soothing environment.
Place notes on doors and gates. Alert guests with notes posted on doors and fence gates to check to make sure pets are not trying to escape behind them. Pick up debris. Firework debris can rain down on properties even if you were not shooting off the fireworks. Curious pets may pick it up or eat it. Check your yard before letting pets out to play.
Keep an eye on the grill. Pets can be opportunists, and those burgers and chicken drumsticks smell delicious to pets. Pets that get too close to the grill can become injured. And if pets eat leftovers, they may end up with digestive distress or even be poisoned by foods that are toxic to cats and dogs.
Pets need to be protected during summertime parties like Independence Day celebrations. TF237141

Reflecting on an opportunity to play with the pros
Kids 4 Harmony is an afterschool youth development program of 18 Degrees, an organization supporting young people and their families in Berkshire County. Kids 4 Harmony provides free intensive music education in Pittsfield and North Adams. This summer, the young musicians in the program will be performing at Tanglewood on June 25. One of the musicians in the program, Ginamarie Bocchino, is an eleventh grade student at Miss Hall’s School, in Pittsfield, and recently completed an internship with The Eagle. A cellist in the program for ten years, she has served as a national youth ambassador for the program’s larger organization, El Sistema, and has performed here and across the country. Below, she shares these reflections on her time with the program.

BY GINAMARIE BOCCHINOOn stage with Grammy Award-winning pianist Emmanuel Ax, I felt like a professional musician. I was 12, and the others in my orchestra were close to my age, but Kids 4 Harmony challenged us to think of ourselves as capable musicians. Following years of practice, this was our moment. As our orchestra performed Mozart with Emmanuel Ax, we communicated a message through music: “We belong here.”
Kids 4 Harmony is a special music program targeting economically-depressed areas of Berkshire County. This afterschool music program in Pittsfield and North Adams provides music education at no cost, along with an instrument to borrow: either violin, viola, or cello. Teachers come from as far as Boston to demand excellence from students, to refine their audition videos, rehearse for concerts, and encourage student-original compositions. Here, students build confidence and community through a commitment to music.
My first encounter with the program was in an elementary school hallway. I was picking up a cello for the first time. At first, playing cello felt awkward. The instrument was downsized four times, to fit the hands of a seven-year-old. My fingers were still adjusting to a pencil, now learning to hold a bow. Every day for two hours after school, I would learn this new language, called music.
The Kids 4 Harmony program traces its roots to the El
Sistema movement, which began in Venezuela in the 1970’s to create social change through music education. Gustavo Dudamel, conductor of the LA Philharmonic became a high-profile example of El Sistema’s power. Dudamel participated in an El Sistema program in Venezuela, and then became one of their biggest advocates.

is now a junior at Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield and completed an internship with The Berkshire Eagle.
Now, hundreds of El Sistema-inspired programs, like Kids 4 Harmony, now exists in more than 50 countries worldwide, including my hometown. The idea of performing at Tanglewood, despite its proximity, felt so far away from home. For those of us from foster care, immigration, and single-parent families, music — from buying an expensive instrument to taking lessons — was out of the question. Kids 4 Harmony allowed us to excel in the world of classical music, which historically has been the purview of high socio-economic levels and lacking in diversity. Now Tanglewood is closer than ever for me and my orchestra mates as Kids 4 Harmony prepares to perform in Ozawa Hall in the summer of 2024.
Mentoring elementary students picking up cello for the first time at Kids 4 Harmony, I remember myself ten years ago. I was moving into a new school and home, away from the foster care system, uncertain of my future. Imagine telling my sixyear-old self how much opportunity and joy cello will bring you, from performing in Kansas City, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Tanglewood and serving as a youth ambassador for El Sistema nationally in Indianapolis.
When I return to Kids 4 Harmony, rehearsing after school with a family of musicians, I feel at home. Music will continue to be a part of who I am, and I hope to continue to pursue it and bring this vehicle for social change into my life and community fully, sharing it with others.
